Chapter 235All chaptersChapter 237

Verse 1 (skanda.7.236.1)

tato gacchenmahādevi durvāsādityamuttamam| yatra durvāsasā taptaṁ tapo varṣasahasrakam

Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the supreme Durvasaditya, where Durvasa performed austerity for a thousand years.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.236.2)

nirāhāro jitāhāraḥ sūryārādhanatatparaḥ| evaṁ kālena mahatā divyatejā janādhipaḥ

Fasting, having conquered the need for food, intent upon the worship of Surya—thus, after a great length of time, the divinely radiant lord of men [Surya],

Verse 3 (skanda.7.236.3)

pratyakṣaṁ darśanaṁ gatvā prāha sūryo mahāmunim

—having appeared before him in visible form, Surya spoke to the great sage.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.236.4)

sūrya uvāca| mā brahmansāhasaṁ kārṣīrvaraṁ varaya suvrata| aprāpyamapi dāsyāmi yatte manasi vartate

Surya said: 'Do not persist in this rash austerity, O brahmin; choose a boon, O one of good vows. Even what is unattainable I shall give you—whatever is in your mind.'

Verse 5 (skanda.7.236.5)

durvāsā uvāca| prasanno yadi me deva varārho yadi cā'pyaham| atra sthāne tvayā stheyaṁ yāvattiṣṭhati medinī

Durvasa said: 'If you are pleased with me, O god, and if I am indeed worthy of a boon, then you should abide in this very place for as long as the earth endures.'

Verse 6 (skanda.7.236.6)

durvāsādityanā mā'tra loke khyātiṁ ca gacchatu| mayā pratiṣṭhitā yā tu pratimā tava sundarī

'May you attain renown here in the world under the name Durvasaditya; and the beautiful image of you that I have established—'

Verse 7 (skanda.7.236.7)

tasyāṁ sāṁnidhyamevāstu tava deva jagatpate| sāṁnidhyaṁ kuruta cātra yamunā duhitā tava

'—in it, O god, lord of the world, may your abiding presence remain; and let your daughter Yamuna also take up her presence here.'

Verse 8 (skanda.7.236.8)

tvatsutastu mahātejā dharmarājo mahābalaḥ

'And let your greatly radiant, mighty son Dharmaraja also dwell here.'

Verse 9 (skanda.7.236.9)

sūrya uvāca| etatsarvaṁ muniśreṣṭha tvayoktaṁ saṁbhaviṣyati| tīrthānāṁ koṭiranyā ca gaṁgādīnāṁ mahāmune

Surya said: 'O best of sages, all that you have spoken shall come to pass. And a crore of other tirthas, of the Ganga and the rest, O great sage—'

Verse 10 (skanda.7.236.10)

āgamiṣyati te sthānaṁ niścitaṁ vacanānmama| atra sthāne mayā brahmansthātavyaṁ saha daivataiḥ

'—shall by my word assuredly come to this place. In this place, O brahmin, I too shall abide, together with the gods.'

Verse 11 (skanda.7.236.11)

ādityānāṁ prabhāvaistu brahmāṁḍodaravāsinām| teṣāṁ māhātmyasaṁyuktaḥ sthāsye cātra mahāmune

'By the powers of the Adityas who dwell within the universe's womb, joined with their glory, I shall abide here too, O great sage.'

Verse 12 (skanda.7.236.12)

savitṝṇāṁ sahasreṇa dṛṣṭenaiva tu yatphalam| tatphalaṁ koṭiguṇitaṁ durvāsādityadarśanāt

'Whatever fruit is obtained merely by beholding a thousand suns, that same fruit, multiplied a crore-fold, is obtained from the sight of Durvasaditya.'

Verse 13 (skanda.7.236.13)

lapsyaṁte prāṇinaḥ sarve yajñakoṭiphalaṁ tathā| evamuktvā tadā sūryaḥ sasmāra tanayāṁ nijām

'All beings shall likewise obtain the fruit of a crore of sacrifices.' Having said this, Surya then called to mind his own daughter,

Verse 14 (skanda.7.236.14)

tathā ca dharmerājānaṁ sarvaprāṇiniyāmakam| smṛtamātrā tatra bhittvā pātālatalamudyayau

and likewise Dharmaraja, the controller of all beings. The instant she was called to mind, Yamuna, splitting open the surface of Patala there, rose up.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.236.15)

sā nadīrūpiṇī devī tīrthakoṭisamanvitā| yamaśca tatra bhagavānkāladaṁḍadharastadā

That goddess appeared in the form of a river, accompanied by a crore of tirthas; and there too the blessed Yama, bearer of the rod of time, then arrived.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.236.16)

ūcatuḥ praṇayopetau sūryaṁ bhuvanasākṣiṇam

Filled with affection, the two of them spoke to Surya, witness of the worlds.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.236.17)

yama uvāca| ājñāpayatu māṁ devo yamunāṁ ca jagatprabhuḥ| kāryaṁ yadbhāvino'rthasya tatkariṣye na saṁśayaḥ

Yama said: 'O god, lord of the universe, command me and Yamuna; whatever task serves this future purpose, that I shall do without doubt.'

Verse 18 (skanda.7.236.18)

sūta uvāca| atra kṣetre svarūpeṇa sthātavyaṁ vacanānmama| pāpināṁ prāṇināṁ cātra rakṣā kāryā prayatnataḥ

Suta said: 'By my word, you must abide in this field in your own true form; here the protection of sinful beings must be undertaken with diligence.'

Verse 19 (skanda.7.236.19)

sūryabhaktāḥ sadā rakṣyā brāhmaṇā gṛhamedhinaḥ| tvaṁ cāpi yamune cātra koṭitīrthena saṁyutā

'Devotees of Surya, and householder brahmins, must always be protected. And you too, O Yamuna, joined here with a crore of tirthas,'

Verse 20 (skanda.7.236.20)

vasa tvaṁ bhava suprītā sthāne durvāsasodbhave| ityevamuktvā deveśastatra durvāsasoṁ'tike

'—dwell in this place, well-pleased, which arose through Durvasa's austerity.' Having thus spoken, the lord of gods, there near Durvasa,

Verse 21 (skanda.7.236.21)

paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāmaṁtarddhānamagātprabhuḥ| durvāsāstu tadā hṛṣṭo yāvatpaśyati svāśramam

vanished from sight while all the gods watched. Then Durvasa, joyful, just as he looked toward his own hermitage,

Verse 22 (skanda.7.236.22)

tāvatpātālamārgeṇa yamunā prādurābhavat| yamaśca bhagavāṁstatra dṛṣṭaḥ kṣetraparūpadhṛk

—at that very moment Yamuna appeared by way of the path from Patala; and there the blessed Yama too was seen, bearing the form of the field-guardian.

Verse 23 (skanda.7.236.23)

īśvara uvāca| itthaṁ samabhavattatra yamunodbhedamuttamam| kuṇḍamādityato yāmye duṁdubhistatra pūrvataḥ

Ishvara said: Thus there occurred that excellent emergence of Yamuna—the pool lies to the south of Aditya, and there, to the east, is Dundubhi.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.236.24)

kṣetrapālo mahādevi yato duṁdubhiniḥsvanaḥ| tatra snātvā mahākuṇḍe yaḥ saṁtarpayate pitṝn

O great Goddess, because a sound like a war-drum arises from him, he is called the field-guardian. He who bathes there in the great pool and offers water to the ancestors,

Verse 25 (skanda.7.236.25)

daśa varṣāṇi pañcaiva tṛptiṁ yāṁti pitāmahaḥ| piṁḍadānena dattena pitṝṇāṁ tuṣṭimāvahet

—his ancestors remain satisfied for fifteen years. By the giving of pinda-offerings, satisfaction is brought to the ancestors,

Verse 26 (skanda.7.236.26)

narake tu sthitānāṁ ca muktirbhūyānna saṁśayaḥ| māghe māsi site pakṣe saptamyāṁ saṁyatātmavān

—and, without doubt, liberation is granted even to those fallen into hell. On the seventh day of the bright fortnight of Magha, one who is self-restrained,

Verse 27 (skanda.7.236.27)

durvāsārkaṁ ca saṁpūjya mucyate brahmahatyayā| snātvā tu yamunā kuṇḍe mādhave māsi mānavaḥ

—having duly worshipped Durvasarka, is freed from the sin of brahminicide. And a man who, having bathed in the Yamuna-kunda in the month of Madhava,

Verse 28 (skanda.7.236.28)

pūjayedbhaktibhāvena raviṁ gaganabhūṣaṇam| paṭhetsahasraṁ nāmnā tu durvāsādityasaṁnidhau

—worships with devotion the Sun, ornament of the sky, and recites the thousand names in the presence of Durvasaditya,

Verse 29 (skanda.7.236.29)

ṣaṇmāsānmucyate jaṁturyadyapi brahmahā naraḥ| sarvamaṁgalamāṁgalyaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam

—that being is freed within six months, even though he be a slayer of a brahmin. It is the most auspicious of all auspicious things, the destroyer of all sin—

Verse 30 (skanda.7.236.30)

—who indeed would not worship the Sun under the name Durvasaditya? There is no fear whatsoever that is not stilled by this.

Verse 31 (skanda.7.236.31)

darśanenāpi sūryasya tatra durvāsasaḥ priye| saṁpadyaṁte tathā kāmāḥ sarva eva yathepsitāḥ

Even by the mere sight of Surya there, in his connection with Durvasa, O beloved, all desires are fulfilled just as wished.

Verse 32 (skanda.7.236.32)

baṁdhyānāṁ putraphaladaṁ bhītānāṁ bhayanāśanam| bhūtipradaṁ daridrāṇāṁ kuṣṭhināṁ paramauṣadham

It bestows the fruit of a son upon barren women, destroys the fear of the frightened, grants prosperity to the poor, and is the supreme medicine for lepers.

Verse 33 (skanda.7.236.33)

bālānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ graharakṣonivāraṇam| mahāpāpopaśamanaṁ durvāsādityadarśanam

For all children it wards off affliction by planets and by evil spirits; the sight of Durvasaditya pacifies great sin.

Verse 34 (skanda.7.236.34)

hemāśvastatra dātavyaḥ sūryamuddiśya bhāmini| brāhmaṇe vedasaṁyukte tena dattā mahī bhavet

There, O lovely one, a golden horse dedicated to Surya should be given to a brahmin versed in the Veda; by that gift the whole earth is, as it were, given.

Verse 35 (skanda.7.236.35)

yastatra pūjayeddevaṁ kṣetrapālaṁ ca dundubhim| sa putrapaśumāndhīmāñchrīmānbhavati mānavaḥ

He who worships there that god, and Dundubhi the field-guardian, becomes a man blessed with sons and cattle, wise, and prosperous.

Verse 36 (skanda.7.236.36)

na bhayaṁ jāyate tasya trividhaṁ varavarṇini| ardhagavyūtimātraṁ tu tatra kṣetraṁ raveḥ smṛtam

No threefold fear arises for him, O fair-complexioned one. That field of the Sun there is remembered as measuring half a gavyuti.

Verse 37 (skanda.7.236.37)

na tatra praviśejjantuḥ sūryabhaktivivarjitaḥ| ityetatkathitaṁ devi māhātmyaṁ sūryadaivatam

No creature devoid of devotion to Surya should enter there. Thus, O goddess, has this glory belonging to the deity Surya been declared.
