Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 237
The Origin of Yadavasthala and the Glory of Vajreshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.7.237.1)
īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi yādavasthalamuttamam| yādavā yatra naṣṭā vai ṣaṭpaṁcāśacca koṭayaḥ
Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the supreme Yadavasthala, where the Yadavas perished — fifty-six crores of them.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.237.2)
yatra vajreśvaro devo vajreṇārādhitaḥ sadā| yatrābhūddivyadṛṣṭīnāmṛṣīṇāmāśramaṁ kulam
—where the god Vajreshvara, ever worshipped by Vajra, abides; and where there was a settlement of hermitages of sages of divine vision.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.237.3)
devyuvāca| kathaṁ vinaṣṭā bhagavannandhakā vṛṣṇibhiḥ saha| paśyato vāsudevasya bhojāścaiva mahārathāḥ
The Goddess said: 'How, O Lord, were the Andhakas destroyed along with the Vrishnis, and the great-charioted Bhojas too, while Vasudeva looked on?'
Verse 4 (skanda.7.237.4)
kena śaptāstu te vīrā naṣṭā vṛṣṇyandhakādayaḥ| bhojāścaiva mahādeva vistareṇa vadasva me
'By whom were those heroes cursed — the Vrishnis, Andhakas and the rest — who perished, and the Bhojas too, O great god? Tell me in detail.'
Verse 5 (skanda.7.237.5)
īśvara uvāca| ṣaṭtriṁśe ca kalau varṣe saṁprāpte'ndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ| anyonyaṁ muśalaiste hi nijaghnuḥ kālanoditāḥ
Ishvara said: When the thirty-sixth year had arrived, the Andhakas and Vrishnis, driven by fate, slew one another with clubs.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.237.6)
viśvāmitraṁ ca kaṇvaṁ ca nāradaṁ ca yaśasvinam| sāraṇapramukhānbhojāndadṛśurdvārakāṁ gatān
Vishvamitra, and Kanva, and the illustrious Narada, went to Dvaraka; they were seen by the Bhojas headed by Sarana.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.237.7)
te vai sāṁbaṁ samāninyurbhūṣayitvā striyaṁ yathā| abruvannupasaṁgamya devadaṁḍanipīḍitāḥ
They brought Samba forth, adorned like a woman; and, driven by the chastisement of the gods, having approached the sages, they said:
Verse 8 (skanda.7.237.8)
iyaṁ strī putrakāmasya babhroramitatejasaḥ| ṛṣayaḥ sādhu jānīta kimiyaṁ janayiṣyati
'This woman belongs to Babhru, of measureless splendor, who desires a son. O sages, tell truly — what will she bring forth?'
Verse 9 (skanda.7.237.9)
ityuktāste tadā devi vipralaṁbhapradharṣitāḥ| pratyabruvaṁstānmunayastacchṛṇuṣva yathātatham
Thus addressed, O goddess, those sages, provoked by the deceit, replied to them; hear that, just as it was.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.237.10)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya muśalaṁ ghoramāyasam| vāsudevasya dāyādaḥ sāṁbo'yaṁ janayiṣyati
The sages said: 'For the destruction of the Vrishnis and Andhakas, this Samba, offspring of Vasudeva, shall bring forth a terrible iron club.'
Verse 11 (skanda.7.237.11)
yena yūyaṁ sudurvṛttā nṛśaṁsā jātamanyavaḥ| ucchettāraḥ kulaṁ sarvamṛte rāmājjanārddanāt
'By which you, of thoroughly evil conduct, cruel, and filled with wrath, shall become destroyers of your entire clan — save for Rama and Janardana.'
Verse 12 (skanda.7.237.12)
tyaktvā yāsyati vaḥ śrīmāṁtyaktvā bhūmiṁ halāyudhaḥ| jarā kṛṣṇaṁ mahābhāgaṁ śayānaṁ tu nivetsyati
'The glorious Krishna shall depart, forsaking you; Halayudha shall forsake the earth; and, as illustrious Krishna lies resting, one named Jara shall pierce him.'
Verse 13 (skanda.7.237.13)
ityabruvaṁstato devi pralabdhāste durātmabhiḥ| munayaḥ krodharaktākṣāḥ samīkṣyātha parasparam
Having thus spoken, O goddess, those sages, deceived by the evil-minded ones, their eyes red with anger, looked at one another,
Verse 14 (skanda.7.237.14)
tathoktā munayaste tu tataḥ keśavamabhyayuḥ| athāvadattadā vṛṣṇīñchrutvaivaṁ madhusūdanaḥ
—and, having spoken thus, those sages then went to Keshava. Then Madhusudana, having heard this, said to the Vrishnis:
Verse 15 (skanda.7.237.15)
abhijño matimāṁstasya bhavitavyaṁ tatheti tat| evamuktvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ praviveśa punargṛhān
—being wise and knowing what was destined, 'that which is fated shall be so.' Having said this, Hrishikesha again entered his house.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.237.16)
kṛtāṁtamanyathākarttuṁ naicchatsa jagataḥ prabhuḥ| śvobhūte satataḥ sāṁbo musalaṁ tadasūta vai
That lord of the universe did not wish to alter what was fated. When the next day dawned, Samba then indeed brought forth that club,
Verse 17 (skanda.7.237.17)
yena vṛṇṣyandhakakule puruṣā bhasmasātkṛtāḥ| vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya kiṁkarapratimaṁ mahat
—by which the men of the Vrishni-Andhaka clan were reduced to ashes; a great thing, resembling Yama's servant, wrought for the destruction of the Vrishnis and Andhakas.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.237.18)
asūta śāpajaṁ ghoraṁ tacca rājñe nyavedayat| viṣaṇṇo'tha tato rājā sūkṣmaṁ cūrṇamakārayat
He brought forth this terrible thing born of the curse, and it was reported to the king. Then the king, distressed, had it ground into fine powder.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.237.19)
prākṣipatsāgare tatra puruṣo rājaśāsitaḥ| athovāca svanagare vacanādāhukasya hi
A man, commanded by the king, cast it into the ocean there. Then, by the word of Ahuka, it was proclaimed in their own city:
Verse 20 (skanda.7.237.20)
janārddanasya rāmasya babhroścaiva mahātmanaḥ| adyaprabhṛti sarveṣāṁ vṛṣṇandhakagṛheṣviha
'—that from this day forward, in the houses here of Janardana, of Rama, of the great-souled Babhru, and of all the Vrishnis and Andhakas,'
Verse 21 (skanda.7.237.21)
surāsavo na karttavyaḥ sarvairviṣayavāsibhiḥ| yaśca vo viditaṁ kuryādevaṁ kaścitkvacinnaraḥ
'—no inhabitant of the realm shall make liquor or spirits. And should any man among you, anywhere, disregard and defy this,'
Verse 22 (skanda.7.237.22)
'—he, together with his kinsmen, shall himself, while yet living, be impaled upon the stake.' Then, out of fear of the king, all observed that rule there,
Verse 23 (skanda.7.237.23)
narāḥ śāsanamājñāya rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ| evaṁ prayatamānānāṁ vṛṣṇīnāmandhakaiḥ saha
—the men, heeding the command of Rama of unwearied deeds. Thus, even while the Vrishnis, together with the Andhakas, strove to observe this discipline,
Verse 24 (skanda.7.237.24)
kālo gṛhāṇi sarvāṇi paricakrāma nityaśaḥ| karālo vikaṭo muṁḍaḥ puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇapiṁgalaḥ
Time daily roamed about all their houses — a terrible, monstrous, shaven-headed figure of dark-tawny hue,
Verse 25 (skanda.7.237.25)
sammārjanī mahāketurjapāpuṣpāvataṁsakaḥ| kṛkalāsavāhanaśca rattikākarṇabhūṣaṇaḥ
—bearing a broom as his great banner, wearing a hibiscus flower as an ear-ornament, mounted on a chameleon, adorned with gunja-berries at his ears.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.237.26)
gṛhāṇyavekṣya vṛṣṇīnāṁ nādṛśyata punaḥ kvacit| tasya cāsanmaheṣvāsāḥ śaraiḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
Having surveyed the houses of the Vrishnis, he was never seen again anywhere. Great archers shot at him with hundreds of thousands of arrows,
Verse 27 (skanda.7.237.27)
—but he, the ever-present destroyer of all beings, could never be pierced. Great and dreadful winds arose day after day.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.237.28)
vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya bahavo lomaharṣaṇāḥ| vivṛddhya mūṣikā rathyāvitunnamaṇikāstathā
For the destruction of the Vrishnis and Andhakas, many hair-raising omens occurred; mice multiplied greatly and gnawed holes in the water-jars along the roadways.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.237.29)
keśāndadaṁśuḥ suptānāṁ nṛṇāṁ yuvatayo niśi| cīcīkūcītyavāśaṁta sārikā vṛṣṇiveśmasu
At night, young female mice bit off the hair of sleeping men; mynah birds screeched 'chichi-kuchi' in the houses of the Vrishnis.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.237.30)
nopaśāmyati śabdaśca sa divārātrameva vā| anvakurvannulūkāśca vāyasānvṛṣṇiveśmasu
That sound never ceased, whether by day or night; and owls, in the houses of the Vrishnis, took to imitating the cry of crows.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.237.31)
ajāḥ śivānāṁ ca rutamanvakurvata bhāmini| pāṁḍurāraktapādāśca vihagāḥ kālapreritāḥ
Goats, O lovely one, began to imitate the cries of jackals; and birds with pale, reddened feet, driven by fate,
Verse 32 (skanda.7.237.32)
vṛṣṇyandhakagṛheṣvevaṁ kapotā vyacaraṁstadā| vyajāyaṁta kharā goṣu karabhāścāśvatarīṣu ca
—doves thus wandered about, thronging the houses of the Vrishnis and Andhakas. Donkeys were born of cows, and camel-colts of she-mules,
Verse 33 (skanda.7.237.33)
śunīṣvapi biḍālāśca mūṣakā nakulīṣu ca| tāpatrayāṁta pāpāni kurvaṁto vṛṣṇayastathā
—and cats were born of bitches, and mice of mongooses. Yet, caught in the threefold torment, the Vrishnis, committing sins,
Verse 34 (skanda.7.237.34)
adviṣanbrāhmaṇāṁścāpi pitṝndevāṁstathaiva ca| gurūṁścāpyavamanyaṁte na tu rāmajanārdanau
—came to hate brahmins, and likewise the ancestors and the gods; and they disrespected their elders too — but not Rama and Janardana.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.237.35)
bhāryāḥ patīnvyuccaraṁti patnīśca puruṣāstathā| vibhāvasuḥ prajvalito vāmaṁ viparivarttate
Wives turned against their husbands, and husbands likewise against their wives; the blazing fire began to curl to the left.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.237.36)
nīlalohitamāṁjiṣṭhā visṛjaṁścārciṣaḥ pṛthak| udayāstamane nityaṁ paryastaḥ syāddivākaraḥ
—casting forth separate flames of blue, red, and madder hue. Daily, at both its rising and setting, the sun seemed to appear as if encircled.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.237.37)
vyadṛśyata sakṛtpuṁbhiḥ kabandhaiḥ parivāritaḥ| mahānaseṣu siddhāṁte saṁskṛte'nne tu bhāmini
Once he was seen surrounded by headless trunks. And, O lovely one, in the kitchens, when the food had been cooked and was ready,
Verse 38 (skanda.7.237.38)
uttāryamāṇe kṛmayo dṛśyaṁte ca varānane| puṇyāhe vācyamāne ca paṭhatsu ca mahātmasu
—when it was taken off the fire, O fair-faced one, worms were seen in it. And while the blessing 'punyaham' was being pronounced, and while great souls recited the Veda,
Verse 39 (skanda.7.237.39)
abhidhāvaṁti śrūyaṁte na cādṛśyata kaścana| parasparasya nakṣatraṁ hanyamānaṁ punaḥpunaḥ
—the sound of running feet was heard, yet no one was seen. Again and again one nakshatra seemed to assail another,
Verse 40 (skanda.7.237.40)
grahairapaśyansarvaiste nātmanastu kathañcana| na hutaṁ pācayatyagnirvṛṣṇyaṁdhakapuraskṛtam
—they saw ill portents among all the planets, yet took none of it as a sign for themselves. Fire would not properly consume the oblation offered by the Vrishnis and Andhakas,
Verse 41 (skanda.7.237.41)
samaṁtātpratyavāśaṁta rāsabhā dāruṇasvanāḥ| evaṁ paśyanhṛṣīkeśaḥ saṁprāptānkālaparyayān
—and on every side donkeys brayed with dreadful sounds. Thus Hrishikesha, beholding these transformations wrought by fate that had come upon them,
Verse 42 (skanda.7.237.42)
trayodaśīṁ hyamāvāsyāṁ tāṁ dṛṣṭvā prābravīdidam| trayodaśī paṁcadaśī kṛteyaṁ rāhuṇā punaḥ
—having beheld that thirteenth day fall as a new moon, spoke this: 'This fifteenth day has again been made a thirteenth by Rahu.'
Verse 43 (skanda.7.237.43)
tadā ca bhārate yuddhe prāptā cādya kṣayāya naḥ| dhigdhigityevakālaṁ taṁ pariciṁtya janārdanaḥ
'That very conjunction occurred at the time of the Bharata war too, and now it has come again, for our destruction. Shame, shame!' Thus, reflecting upon that time, Janardana
Verse 44 (skanda.7.237.44)
mene prāptaṁ sa ṣaṭtriṁśaṁ varṣaṁ keśiniṣūdanaḥ| putraśokābhisaṁtaptā gāṁdhārī yaduvāca ha
—the slayer of Keshi understood that the thirty-sixth year, foretold, had arrived — as Gandhari, once tormented by grief for her sons, had declared it would.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.237.45)
evaṁ paśyanhṛṣīkeśastadidaṁ samupasthitam| idaṁ ca samanuprāptamabravīdyadyudhiṣṭhiraḥ
Thus Hrishikesha, seeing that the curse had now come to pass, recalled what Yudhishthira had once said, which had now been fulfilled:
Verse 46 (skanda.7.237.46)
purā vyūḍheṣvanīkeṣu dṛṣṭvotpātānsudāruṇān| puṇyagranthasya śravaṇācchāṁtihomādviśodhanāt
—formerly, when the armies had been arrayed, having seen the extremely dire portents, he had said: 'By hearing sacred texts, by peace-offerings, by purification,'
Verse 47 (skanda.7.237.47)
pūtatīrthābhiṣekāṁcca nānyacchreyo bhavediti| ityuktvā vāsudevastaccikīrṣansatyameva ca
'—and by bathing in sacred tirthas — there is no other means of well-being.' Having said this, Vasudeva, truly desiring to act accordingly,
Verse 48 (skanda.7.237.48)
ājñāpayāmāsa tadā tīrthayātrāmariṁdamaḥ| aghoṣayaṁta puruṣāstatra keśavaśāsanāt
—the subduer of foes then ordained a pilgrimage to the tirthas. By Keshava's command, men there made proclamation:
Verse 49 (skanda.7.237.49)
tīrthayātrā prabhāse vai kāryeti varavarṇini| athāriṣṭāni vakṣyāmi purīṁ dvāravatīṁ prati
'—that a pilgrimage to Prabhasa must be undertaken.' Now, O fair-complexioned one, I shall tell of the ill omens that befell the city of Dvaravati:
Verse 50 (skanda.7.237.50)
kālī strī pāṁḍurairdaṁtaiḥ praviśya nagarīṁ niśi| striyaḥ svapneṣu muṣṇantī dvārakāṁ prati dhāvati
A dark woman with white teeth, entering the city at night, was seen in dreams stealing women away, running outward from Dvaraka.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.237.51)
agnihotraniketaṁ ca sumedhyeṣu ca veśmasu| vṛṣṇyaṁdhakāṁśca khādaṁtī svapne dṛṣṭā bhayānakā
That terrifying woman was seen in dreams devouring the abodes of the agnihotra fire, the most sacred houses, and the Vrishnis and Andhakas themselves,
Verse 52 (skanda.7.237.52)
kurvaṁtī bhīṣaṇaṁ nādaṁ kurkuṭaśvānasaṁyutā| tathā sahasraśo raudrāścaturbāhava eva ca
—making a terrifying sound, accompanied by cocks and dogs; and likewise, by the thousands, dreadful four-armed beings,
Verse 53 (skanda.7.237.53)
strīṇāṁ garbheṣvajāyaṁta rākṣasā guhyakāstathā| alaṁkārāśca cchatrāṇi dhvajāśca kavacāni ca
—rakshasas and guhyakas were born in the wombs of women. Ornaments, umbrellas, banners, and armor
Verse 54 (skanda.7.237.54)
hriyamāṇāni dṛśyaṁte rakṣobhistu bhayānakaiḥ| yaccāgnidattaṁ kṛṣṇasya vajranābhamayasmayam
—were seen being carried off by dreadful rakshasas. And that iron discus, named Vajranabha, given by Agni to Krishna,
Verse 55 (skanda.7.237.55)
divamācakrame cakraṁ vṛṣṇīnāṁ paśyatāṁ tadā| yuktaṁ rathaṁ divyamādityavarṇaṁ bhayāvahaṁ paśyato dārukasya
—that discus ascended into the sky while the Vrishnis looked on. And the divine chariot, yoked, the color of the sun, appeared terrifying to Daruka the charioteer as he watched —
Verse 56 (skanda.7.237.56)
te sāgarasyopariṣṭādvartamānānmanojavāṁścaturo vājimukhyān| tālaḥ suparṇaśca mahādhvajau tau supūjitau rāmajanārdanābhyām
—those four foremost horses, swift as thought, were seen moving over the very surface of the sea. And the two great banners, the Palm and the Garuda, well honored by Rama and Janardana —

Verse 97 (skanda.7.237.97)

gavyūtimātraṁ taddevi yādavānāṁ citāḥ smṛtāḥ| teṣāṁ kilāsthinicayaiḥ sthalarūpaṁ babhūva tat

—by Narada's instruction, at Prabhasa, the destroyer of sin; and that king, foremost of the Yadavas, attained supreme perfection.
Verse 104 (skanda.7.237.104)
tatraiva yo naraḥ samyaksnātvā jāṁbavatī jale| vajreśvaraṁ tu saṁpūjya brāhmaṇāṁstatra bhojayet
Whatever man, having duly bathed there in the waters of the Jambavati, and having worshipped Vajreshvara, feeds brahmins there,
Verse 105 (skanda.7.237.105)
yādavasthalasāmīpye gosahasraphalaṁ labhet| ṣaṭkoṇaṁ tatra dātavyamaṁgulyā yādavasthale
—near Yadavasthala, obtains the fruit of a gift of a thousand cows. A finger's-breadth hexagon of ground should there be given at Yadavasthala,
Verse 106 (skanda.7.237.106)
