The Glory of the River Hiranya

Verse 1 (skanda.7.238.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि हिरण्यां पापनाशिनीम्। सर्वकामप्रदां पुण्यां दारिद्र्यस्यांतकारिणीम्

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi hiraṇyāṁ pāpanāśinīm| sarvakāmapradāṁ puṇyāṁ dāridryasyāṁtakāriṇīm

Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the river Hiranya, destroyer of sin, bestower of every desire, meritorious, the ender of poverty.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.238.2)

तत्र स्नात्वा विधानेन कृत्वा पिंडोदक क्रियाम्। प्राप्नुयादक्षयाँल्लोकान्पितॄनुद्धृत्य पापतः

tatra snātvā vidhānena kṛtvā piṁḍodaka kriyām| prāpnuyādakṣayā̃llokānpitṝnuddhṛtya pāpataḥ

Having bathed there duly and performed the rite of pinda and water offerings, one obtains imperishable worlds, having delivered one's ancestors from sin.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.238.3)

एकं यो भोजयेत्तत्र ब्राह्मणं शंसितव्रतम्। तेनायुतसहस्रं हि भोजितं स्याद्द्विजन्मनाम्

ekaṁ yo bhojayettatra brāhmaṇaṁ śaṁsitavratam| tenāyutasahasraṁ hi bhojitaṁ syāddvijanmanām

He who feeds there a single brahmin of praiseworthy vows is, by that act, deemed to have fed ten thousand twice-born.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.238.4)

तत्र हेमरथा देयो ब्राह्मणे वेदपारगे। विधिना शिवमुद्दिश्य यात्रायुतफलं लभेत्

tatra hemarathā deyo brāhmaṇe vedapārage| vidhinā śivamuddiśya yātrāyutaphalaṁ labhet

There, a golden chariot dedicated to Shiva should be duly given to a brahmin learned in the Veda; thereby one obtains the fruit of ten thousand pilgrimages.
