The Greatness of Shankaranatha

Verse 1 (skanda.7.252.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि लिंगं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। तत्र शंकरनाथेति प्रसिद्धं पापनाशनम्

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi liṅgaṁ trailokyaviśrutam| tatra śaṁkaranātheti prasiddhaṁ pāpanāśanam

Ishvara said: O Mahadevi, next one should go to that linga renowned throughout the three worlds, known there by the name Shankaranatha, the destroyer of sin.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.252.2)

स्थापितं भानुना देवि कृत्वा तत्र महत्तपः। तमर्चयित्वा देवेशं सोपवासो महेश्वरम्

sthāpitaṁ bhānunā devi kṛtvā tatra mahattapaḥ| tamarcayitvā deveśaṁ sopavāso maheśvaram

O Devi, Bhanu, having performed great austerity there, installed it. Having worshipped that Lord of gods, Maheshvara, while observing a fast —

Verse 3 (skanda.7.252.3)

ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्तत्र श्राद्धं कुर्याज्जितेन्द्रियः। शक्त्या हिरण्यं वासांसि विप्रे दद्यात्समाहितः। स याति परमं स्थानं नात्र कार्या विचारणा

brāhmaṇānbhojayettatra śrāddhaṁ kuryājjitendriyaḥ| śaktyā hiraṇyaṁ vāsāṁsi vipre dadyātsamāhitaḥ| sa yāti paramaṁ sthānaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

—one should, with senses restrained, feed brahmins there and perform shraddha, and, with a composed mind, give gold and garments to a brahmin according to one's means. He attains the supreme abode — of this there should be no doubt.
