The Glory of Nyankumati

Verse 1 (skanda.7.261.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि यत्र न्यंकुमती नदी। मर्यादार्थं समानीता क्षेत्रशांत्यै च शंभुना॥

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchet mahādevi yatra nyaṁkumatī nadī| maryādārthaṁ samānītā kṣetraśāṁtyai ca śambhunā||

Ishvara said: Thereafter, O Mahadevi, one should go to where the river Nyankumati flows, which Shambhu brought there to mark the boundary and bring peace to the sacred field.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.261.2)

तस्यैव दक्षिणे भागे सर्वपापप्रणाशिनी। तस्यां स्नात्वा च वै सम्यग्यः श्राद्धं कुरुते नरः। स पितॄंस्तारयेत्सर्वान्नरकान्नात्र संशयः॥

tasyaiva dakṣiṇe bhāge sarvapāpapraṇāśinī| tasyāṁ snātvā ca vai samyagyaḥ śrāddhaṁ kurute naraḥ| sa pitṝṁstārayetsarvānnarakānnātra saṁśayaḥ||

To its southern part flows this river, destroyer of all sins. The man who bathes there properly and performs the shraddha rite delivers all his ancestors from hell — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.261.3)

वैशाखे शुक्लपक्षे तु तृतीयायां च भामिनि। स्नात्वा तु तर्पयेद्भक्त्या तिलदर्भजलैः प्रिये। श्राद्धं कृतं भवेत्तेन गंगायां नात्र संशयः॥

vaiśākhe śuklapakṣe tu tṛtīyāyāṁ ca bhāmini| snātvā tu tarpayedbhaktyā tiladarbhajalaiḥ priye| śrāddhaṁ kṛtaṁ bhavettena gaṁgāyāṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ||

O fair one, O beloved, whoever bathes there on the third day of the bright half of Vaishakha and devotedly offers libations with sesame, kusha grass, and water — the shraddha thus performed becomes equal in merit to shraddha performed at the Ganga, without doubt.
