Chapter 276All chaptersChapter 278

Verse 1 (skanda.7.277.1)

tatraiva saṁsthitaṁ paśyedbhūdharaṁnāma nāmataḥ| uddhṛtya pṛthivīṁ yasmāddaṁṣṭrāgreṇa dadhāra saḥ

There, at that very place, one should behold the deity named Bhudhara ('Earth-bearer'), so called because he lifted up the earth and bore it upon the tip of his tusk.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.277.2)

bhūdharastena cākhyāto devikātaṭasaṁsthitaḥ| vedapādo yūpadaṁṣṭraḥ kratudantaḥ srucīmukhaḥ

For that reason he, established on the bank of the Devika, is called Bhudhara — the Veda his feet, the sacrificial post his tusks, the sacred rites his teeth, the ladle his mouth,

Verse 3 (skanda.7.277.3)

agnijihvo darbharomā brahmaśīrṣo mahātapāḥ| ahorātrekṣaṇaparo vedāṁgaśrutibhūṣaṇaḥ

fire his tongue, kusha grass his hair, Brahma his head — he is of great austerity, day and night are his eyes, and the Vedangas and Shrutis are his ornaments.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.277.4)

ādyanāsaḥ sruvatuṁḍaḥ sāmaghoṣasvano mahān| prāgvaṁśakāyo dyutimā nnānādīkṣāvirājitaḥ

The primal oblation is his nostril, the sacrificial ladle his snout, the resonance of the Sama-veda his great voice, the sacrificial hall his body — he is radiant and adorned with manifold initiations.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.277.5)

dakṣiṇāhṛdayo yogī mahāsatraśayo mahān| upākarmoṣṭharucakaḥ pravargyāvartabhūṣaṇaḥ

The sacrificial fee is his heart; he is a great yogin, reclining upon the great sacrificial session. The preparatory rite is his radiant lip, and the round of the pravargya rite is his ornament.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.277.6)

nānācchandogatipatho brahmoktakramavikramaḥ| bhūtvā yajñavarāho'sau tatra sthāne sthito'bhavat

The many Vedic metres are his paths of movement, and the order proclaimed by Brahma is his very stride — thus becoming the Yajna-Varaha (sacrificial Boar), he came to abide in that place.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.277.7)

puṣyamāse hyamāvāsyāmekādaśyāmathāpi vā| prāpte prāvṛṣi kāle ca jñātvā kanyāgataṁ ravim

On the new-moon day of the month of Pushya, or on the eleventh day, or when the rainy season arrives, and knowing the sun to have entered Kanya (Virgo) —

Verse 8 (skanda.7.277.8)

pāyasaṁ guḍasaṁyuktaṁ haviṣyaṁ ca guḍaplutam| namo vaḥ pitaro rasāya annādyamabhimaṁtrayet

one should offer rice-pudding mixed with jaggery and a sacred oblation steeped in jaggery, and consecrate that food with the words 'namo vaḥ pitaro rasāya' ('salutation to you, O ancestors, for your essence').

Verse 9 (skanda.7.277.9)

tejo'siśukramityājyaṁ dadhikrāvṇena vai dadhi| kṣīramājyāya mantreṇa vyañjanāni ca yāni tu

With the mantra 'tejo'si śukram' one should offer ghee, with the 'Dadhikravna' mantra curd, with the mantra for ghee, milk, and likewise whatever other dishes there are,

Verse 10 (skanda.7.277.10)

bhakṣyabhojyāni sarvāṇi mahānindreṇa dāpayet| saṁvatsa roniyo maṁtraṁ japtvā tenodakaṁ dvijaḥ

all those eatables and other food should be given with the great reverence due to Mahendra himself; and having duly recited the mantra of the Samvatsara (the year), the brahmin should then offer water together with it.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.277.11)

evaṁ saṁbhojya vai viprānpiṇḍadānaṁ tu dāpayet| ityanena vidhānena yastatra śrāddhakṛdbhavet

Having thus fed the brahmins well, one should then also offer the pinda (rice-ball) offering. Whoever performs shraddha there according to this rule —

Verse 12 (skanda.7.277.12)

tasya tṛptāstu pitaro yāvadiṁdrāścaturddaśa| gayāśrāddhaṁ vināpīha gayāśrāddhaphalaṁ labhet

— his ancestors remain satisfied for the span of fourteen Indras; and here, even without performing the shraddha at Gaya, one obtains the very fruit of the Gaya-shraddha.
