Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 295
The Glory of Chandrodaka Tirtha and Indreshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.7.295.1)
īśvara uvāca| tasmādīśāna digbhāge indrasthānamanuttamam| gavyūtipañcamātreṇa yatra candrasaraḥ priye
Ishvara said: O dear one, to the northeast of that is the unsurpassed abode of Indra, at a distance of just five gavyutis, where is Chandra-saras, the Moon's lake.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.295.2)
tasmāduttaradigbhāge nātidūre vyavasthitam| yatra candrodakaṁ devi jarādāridryanāśanam
To the north of that, not far, situated there, is Chandrodaka, O Goddess, the destroyer of old age and poverty.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.295.3)
candrānuvṛddhyā tadvṛddhiḥ kṣayastatsaṁkṣaye bhavet| tasminpāpayuge'pyevaṁ kadācitsaṁpradṛśyate
By the waxing of the moon it waxes, and by its waning it wanes; thus, even in the sinful age, this is sometimes seen.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.295.4)
tatra snātvā mahādevi yadi pāpasahasrakam| kṛtaṁ so'tra samāyāti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
O great Goddess, bathing there, even if a thousand sins have been committed, they are dissolved there—no doubt need be entertained about this.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.295.5)
tatrāhilyāprasaṁgotthamahāpātakabhīruṇā| gautamodbhavaśāpena vilakṣyīkṛtacetasā
There, fearful of the great sin arising from the affair with Ahalya, his mind humbled by the curse born of Gautama—
Verse 6 (skanda.7.295.6)
indreṇa ca purā devi iṣṭaṁ vipuladakṣiṇaiḥ| tatra varṣasahasrāṇi saṁsthāpya śivamīśvaram| indreśvareti nāmnā vai sarvapātakanāśanam
Indra formerly worshipped with sacrifices of abundant fees; having established Shiva the Lord there for a thousand years, under the name Indreshvara, the destroyer of all sins.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.295.7)
candratīrthe naraḥ snātvā saṁtarpya pitṛdevatāḥ| indreśvaraṁ ca saṁpūjya mucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
A man, having bathed at Chandra-tirtha, having offered libations to the ancestors and gods, and having worshipped Indreshvara, is freed—there is no doubt about this.
