The Glory of the River Rishitoya

Verse 1 (skanda.7.296.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। तस्मादाग्नेयदिग्भागे गव्यूतिसप्तकेन च। स्थानं देवकुलंनाम देवानां यत्र संगमः

īśvara uvāca| tasmādāgneyadigbhāge gavyūtisaptakena ca| sthānaṁ devakulaṁnāma devānāṁ yatra saṁgamaḥ

Ishvara said: In the southeast direction from that, at a distance of seven gavyutis, is a place named Devakula, where the gods gather together.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.296.2)

ऋषीणां यत्र सिद्धानां पुरा लिंगे निपातिते। यस्माज्जातो महादेवि तस्माद्देवकुलं स्मृतम्

ṛṣīṇāṁ yatra siddhānāṁ purā liṁge nipātite| yasmājjāto mahādevi tasmāddevakulaṁ smṛtam

Where, before the accomplished sages, formerly a linga once fell; since this place arose from that, O great Goddess, it is remembered as Devakula.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.296.3)

तस्य पश्चिमदिग्भाग ऋषितोया महानदी। ऋषीणां वल्लभा देवि सर्वपातकनाशिनी

tasya paścimadigbhāga ṛṣitoyā mahānadī| ṛṣīṇāṁ vallabhā devi sarvapātakanāśinī

To its west is the great river Rishitoya, O Goddess, dear to the sages, the destroyer of all sins.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.296.4)

तत्र स्नात्वा नरः सम्यक्पितॄणां निर्वपेन्नरः। सप्तवर्षायुतान्येव पितॄणां तृप्तिमावहेत्

tatra snātvā naraḥ samyakpitṝṇāṁ nirvapennaraḥ| saptavarṣāyutānyeva pitṝṇāṁ tṛptimāvahet

Bathing there properly and making offerings to the ancestors, a man brings the ancestors satisfaction lasting seventy thousand years.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.296.5)

सुवर्णं तत्र देयं तु अजिनं कंबलं तथा। आषाढे त्वमावास्यायां यत्किञ्चिद्दीयते ध्रुवम्

suvarṇaṁ tatra deyaṁ tu ajinaṁ kaṁbalaṁ tathā| āṣāḍhe tvamāvāsyāyāṁ yatkiñciddīyate dhruvam

Gold should be given there, and also a deer-skin and a blanket; on the new-moon day of Ashadha, whatever, however little, is given there certainly bears lasting fruit.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.296.6)

वर्द्धते षोडशगुणं यावदायाति पूर्णिमा

varddhate ṣoḍaśaguṇaṁ yāvadāyāti pūrṇimā

It increases sixteenfold, until the full moon arrives.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.296.7)

सुवर्णं तत्र देयं तु अजिनं कंबलं तथा। मुच्यते पातकैः सर्वैः सप्तजन्मकृतैरपि

suvarṇaṁ tatra deyaṁ tu ajinaṁ kaṁbalaṁ tathā| mucyate pātakaiḥ sarvaiḥ saptajanmakṛtairapi

Gold should be given there, and also a deer-skin and a blanket; by this one is freed from all sins, even those committed over seven births.
