Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 344
The Glory of Jaradgaveshvara (in the Glory of the Anshumati)
Verse 1 (skanda.7.344.1)
īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi liṅgaṁ pāpapraṇāśanam| kapileśvarasyaiśānyām uttareṇa vyavasthitam
Ishvara said: O Great Goddess, one should then go to the sin-destroying linga situated to the north, in the northeast quarter of Kapileshvara.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.344.2)
jaradgaveśvaraṁ nāma jaradgavapratiṣṭhitam| brahmahatyādi pāpānāṁ nāśanaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ
Named Jaradgaveshvara, established by Jaradgava — it destroys sins beginning with the killing of a Brahmin; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.344.3)
tatraiva saṁsthitā devi devī aṁśumatī nadī| tatra snātvā vidhānena piṇḍadānaṁ tu dāpayet
There too, O Goddess, stands the divine river Anshumati. Having bathed there according to rule, one should perform the offering of the pinda (rice-ball to the ancestors).
Verse 4 (skanda.7.344.4)
varṣakoṭiśataṁ sāgraṁ pitṝṇāṁ tṛptim āvahet| vṛṣabhastatra dātavyo brāhmaṇe vedapārage
This brings satisfaction to the ancestors for more than a hundred crore years. A bull should be given there to a Brahmin well-versed in the Vedas.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.344.5)
tatastu pūjayeddevaṁ gandhapuṣpairjaradgavam| pañcāmṛtarasenaiva tathā gugguludhūpanaiḥ
Then one should worship the God Jaradgava with scent and flowers, with the essence of the five nectars (panchamrita), and with the incense of guggulu resin.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.344.6)
stutidaṇḍanamaskāraiḥ pradakṣiṇairaharniśam| brāhmaṇānbhojayettatra bhakṣyabhojyaiḥ pṛthagvidhaiḥ| ekena bhojitenaiva koṭirbhavati bhojitā
— with hymns of praise, prostrations, and circumambulations, day and night. One should feed Brahmins there with various kinds of food and delicacies. By feeding just one Brahmin there, a crore are deemed fed.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.344.7)
kṛte siddhodakaṁ nāma tattīrthaṁ parikīrtitam| jaradgaveśvaraṁ tīrthaṁ kalau tu parikīrtyate
In the Krita (Satya) age, that tirtha was celebrated by the name Siddhodaka; in the Kali age, it is renowned as the tirtha of Jaradgaveshvara.
