The Glory of Suparnela

Verse 1 (skanda.7.351.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि सुपर्णेलां च भैरवीम्। दुर्गकूटाद्दक्षिणतो धनुःपंचशतांतरे

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi suparṇelāṁ ca bhairavīm| durgakūṭāddakṣiṇato dhanuḥpañcaśatāntare

Ishvara said: O Great Goddess, one should then go to Suparnela, also known as Bhairavi, situated to the south of Durgakuta at a distance of five hundred bow-lengths.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.351.2)

सुपर्णेन पुरा देवि पातालादमृतं हृतम्। गृहीत्वा तत्र मुक्तं तु नागानां पश्यतां किल

suparṇena purā devi pātālādamṛtaṁ hṛtam| gṛhītvā tatra muktaṁ tu nāgānāṁ paśyatāṁ kila

O Goddess, in former times Suparna (Garuda) stole the nectar of immortality from the netherworld; having taken it, he released it there, right before the eyes of the serpents.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.351.3)

ततो देव्या तदा दृष्ट्वा रक्षितं नागपार्श्वतः। ततः सुपर्णेलेत्येवं ख्याता सा वसुधातले

tato devyā tadā dṛṣṭvā rakṣitaṁ nāgapārśvataḥ| tataḥ suparṇeletyevaṁ khyātā sā vasudhātale

Then the goddess, seeing it thus guarded beside the serpents, thereafter became known upon the earth by the name Suparnela.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.351.4)

इला तु कथ्यते भूमिः सुपर्णेन प्रतिष्ठिता। ततः सुपर्णेलेत्येव नाम्ना पातकनाशिनी

ilā tu kathyate bhūmiḥ suparṇena pratiṣṭhitā| tataḥ suparṇeletyeva nāmnā pātakanāśinī

'Ila' means 'the earth'; established by Suparna, she is thus known by the very name Suparnela — the destroyer of sin.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.351.5)

सुपर्णकुण्डे तत्रैव स्नात्वा तां पूजयेन्नरः। विप्रेभ्यो भोजनं दद्यान्नापद्भिर्म्रियते नरः। जीववत्सा भवेन्नारी आत्मजैश्चाप्यलंकृता

suparṇakuṇḍe tatraiva snātvā tāṁ pūjayennaraḥ| viprebhyo bhojanaṁ dadyānnāpadbhirmriyate naraḥ| jīvavatsā bhavennārī ātmajaiścāpyalaṁkṛtā

Having bathed there at the Suparna-kunda, a man should worship her and give food to Brahmins; he then does not die through calamities, and a woman who worships her becomes one whose children survive, adorned with offspring.
