Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 4
The Description of the Field's Measure
Verse 1 (skanda.7.4.1)
sūta uvāca| evaṁ munīndrāḥ kathite prabhāve śaṁkareṇa tu| punaḥ papraccha sā devī kṛtāṁjaliputā satī
Suta said: O foremost of sages, when Shankara had thus told of this power, the devoted Goddess again asked, her hands folded in reverence.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.4.2)
devyuvāca| devadeva jagannātha kṣetratīrthamaya prabho| prabhāsakṣetramāhātmyaṁ vistarātkathayasva me
The Goddess said: O God of gods, Lord of the world, O Master embodying every field and tirtha, tell me at length the glory of the Prabhasa field.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.4.3)
kathaṁ tuṣyasi martyānāṁ kṣetre tatra vicetasām| japtaṁ dattaṁ hutaṁ yaṣṭaṁ tapastaptaṁ kṛtaṁ ca yat| prabhāse tu mahākṣetre kasmāttatrākṣayaṁ bhavet
How are you pleased with mortals in that field, even those of unfocused mind? Whatever is muttered in prayer, given, offered in oblation, sacrificed, or practiced in austerity there, in the great field of Prabhasa — why does it become imperishable?
Verse 4 (skanda.7.4.4)
jātyaṁtarasahasreṣu yatpāpaṁ pūrvasaṁcitam| tatkathaṁ kṣayamāpnoti tanmamācakṣva śaṁkara
How is the sin accumulated across thousands of previous births destroyed there? Tell me this, O Shankara.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.4.5)
yadi prabhāsaṁ sarveṣāṁ tīrthānāṁ pravaraṁ matam| kimanyairbahubhistatra karttavyaṁ tīrthavistaraiḥ
If Prabhasa is held to be the foremost of all tirthas, what need is there there for the many other extensive tirthas?
Verse 6 (skanda.7.4.6)
ekaṁ yadi bhavettīrthaṁ mano niḥsaṁśayaṁ bhavet| bahutve sati tīrthānāṁ mano vicalate nṛṇām
If there were but one tirtha, the mind would be free of doubt; when tirthas are many, the minds of men waver.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.4.7)
tasmātsarvaṁ parityajya tīrthajālaṁ savistaram| prabhāsasyaiva māhātmyaṁ kathayasva sureśvara
Therefore, setting aside the whole extensive net of other tirthas, O lord of the gods, tell me the glory of Prabhasa alone.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.4.8)
kṣetrapramāṇaṁ sīmāṁ ca kṣetrasāraṁ hi yatprabho| vaktumarhasi tatsarvaṁ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me
O Lord, the measure of the field, its boundary, and its very essence — tell me all of it, for I am filled with great curiosity.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.4.9)
īśvara uvāca| śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi kṣetrāṇāṁ kṣetramuttamam| sarvakṣetreṣu yatkṣetraṁ prabhāsaṁ tu priyaṁ mama
Ishvara said: Listen, O Goddess, I shall tell of the supreme field among fields; of all fields, that which is Prabhasa is dear to me.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.4.10)
prabhāse tu parā siddhiḥ prabhāse tu parā gatiḥ| yatra saṁnihito nityamahaṁ bhadre niraṁtaram
In Prabhasa alone is the supreme accomplishment; in Prabhasa alone is the supreme goal — O blessed one, where I remain eternally and continuously present.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.4.11)
tasya pramāṇaṁ vakṣyāmi sarvasīmāsamanvitam| kṣetraṁ tu trividha proktaṁ tatte vakṣyāmyanukramāt
I shall tell you its measure, together with all its boundaries; the field is declared to be of three kinds, which I shall now describe to you in order.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.4.12)
kṣetraṁ pīṭhaṁ garbhagṛhaṁ prabhāsasya prakīrtyate| yathākramaṁ phalaṁ tasya koṭikoṭiguṇaṁ smṛtam
The field, the pitha, and the inner sanctum of Prabhasa are thus proclaimed; their fruit is remembered as increasing, in due order, a crore times over.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.4.13)
kṣetraṁ tu prathamaṁ proktaṁ tacca dvādaśayojanam| pañcayojanamānena kṣetrapīṭhaṁ prakīrtitam
The field is spoken of first, and it extends twelve yojanas; the field's pitha is proclaimed to measure five yojanas.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.4.14)
garbhagṛhaṁ ca gavyūtiḥ karṇikā sā mama priyā| kṣetrasīmā pravakṣyāmi śṛṇu devi yathākramam
The inner sanctum measures one gavyuti — that pericarp is dear to me; now I shall tell the boundary of the field in order, O Goddess, listen.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.4.15)
āyāmavyāsataścaiva ādimadhyāṁtasaṁsthitam| pūrve taptodaka svāmī paścime mādhavaḥ smṛtaḥ
In length and breadth, established at its beginning, middle, and end — to the east is Taptodaka-svami, and to the west, Madhava is remembered.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.4.16)
dakṣiṇe sāgarastadvadbhadrā nadyuttare matā| evaṁ sīmāsamāyuktaṁ kṣetraṁ dvādaśayojanam
To the south, likewise, is the ocean, and to the north is reckoned the river Bhadra; thus bounded, the field measures twelve yojanas.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.4.17)
etatprābhāsikaṁ kṣetraṁ sarvapātakanāśanam| tanmadhye pīṭhikā proktā pañcayojanavistṛtā
This is the Prabhasika field, destroyer of all sins; within its midst is declared the pitha, extending five yojanas.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.4.18)
nyaṁkumanyapareṇaiva vajriṇyāḥ pūrvatastathā| māheśvaryā dakṣiṇataḥ samudrottaratastathā
Beyond the Nyankumati, and to the east of the Vajrini, to the south of the Maheshvari, and to the north of the ocean — thus this pitha is bounded.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.4.19)
āyāmavyāsataścaiva pañcayojanavistaram| pīṭhametatsamākhyātamatho garbhagṛhaṁ śṛṇu
In length and breadth extending five yojanas, this pitha is thus declared; now listen concerning the inner sanctum.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.4.20)
dakṣiṇottarato yāvatsamudrātkauraveśvarī| pūrvapaścimato yāvadgomukhāccāśvamedhikam| etadgarbhagṛhaṁ proktaṁ kailāsānmama vallabham
From south to north, from the ocean to Kauraveshvari, and from east to west, from Gomukha to Ashvamedhika — this is declared to be the inner sanctum, dearer to me than even Kailasa.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.4.21)
atrāṁtare tu deveśi yāni tīrthāni bhūtale| vāpīkūpataḍāgāni devatāyatanāni ca
O Mistress of the gods, whatever tirthas exist upon the earth within this space — step-wells, wells, tanks, and shrines of the gods,
Verse 22 (skanda.7.4.22)
sarāṁsi saritaścaiva palvalāni hradāstathā| tāni medhyāni sarvāṇi sarvapāpaharāṇi ca
lakes, rivers, ponds, and pools — all of these are sacred and destroy every sin.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.4.23)
yatra tatra naraḥ snātvā svargaloke mahīyate| kṣetrasya prathamo bhāgo medhyo māheśvaraḥ smṛtaḥ
Bathing anywhere within, a man is honored in the heavenly world; the first, sacred portion of the field is remembered as the Maheshvara portion.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.4.24)
dvitīyo vaiṣṇavo bhāgo brahmabhāgastṛtīyakaḥ| tīrthānāṁ koṭirekā tu brāhme bhāge vyavasthitā
The second is the Vaishnava portion, the third the Brahma portion; in the Brahma portion abide one crore tirthas.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.4.25)
vaiṣṇave koṭirekā tu tīrthānāṁ varavarṇini| sārddhakoṭistu saṁproktā rudrabhāge ca madhyataḥ
O fair one, in the Vaishnava portion too are one crore tirthas; and in the middle, in the Rudra portion, one and a half crore are declared.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.4.26)
evaṁ devi samākhyātaṁ tatkṣetraṁ hi tridaivatam| guhyādguhyataraṁ kṣetraṁ mama priyataraṁ śubhe
O Goddess, thus is this field declared to belong to the three deities; O auspicious one, this field is more secret than the secret, and most dear to me.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.4.27)
tisraḥ koṭyo'rddhakoṭiśca kṣetre proktā vibhāgataḥ| yātrā tu trividhā jñeyā tāṁ śṛṇuṣva varānane
Thus, three and a half crore tirthas are declared within the field, by division; and the pilgrimage too should be known as threefold — hear of it, O fair-faced one.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.4.28)
raudrī tu prathamā yātrā vaiṣṇavī ca dvitīyikā| brāhmī tṛtīyā saṁkhyātā sarvapātakanāśinī
The Raudri is the first pilgrimage, the Vaishnavi the second; the Brahmi is counted as the third, destroyer of all sins.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.4.29)
brāhme vibhāge saṁproktā icchāśaktirvarānane| kriyā ca vaiṣṇave bhāge dvitīye tu prakīrtitā
O fair-faced one, in the Brahma portion is declared the Power of Will; and in the second, the Vaishnava portion, is proclaimed the Power of Action.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.4.30)
raudre bhāge tṛtīye tu jñānaśaktirvarānane| yadi pāpo yadi śaṭho yadi naiṣkṛtiko naraḥ
And in the third, the Rudra portion, is the Power of Knowledge, O fair one; whether a man be sinful, deceitful, or guilty of the gravest crimes,
Verse 31 (skanda.7.4.31)
nirmuktaḥ sarvapāpebhyo madhyabhāge vasettu yaḥ| himavaṁtaṁ parityajya parvataṁ gaṁdhamādanam
whoever dwells in the middle portion becomes freed from all sins; setting aside Himavan and Mount Gandhamadana,
Verse 32 (skanda.7.4.32)
kailāsaṁ niṣadhaṁ caiva merupṛṣṭhaṁ mahādyutim| ramyaṁ triśikharaṁ caiva mānasaṁ ca mahāgirim
and Kailasa, Nishadha, the most radiant summit of Meru, the lovely Trishikhara, and the great mountain Manasa,
Verse 33 (skanda.7.4.33)
devodyānāni ramyāṇi naṁdanaṁ vanameva ca| svargasthānāni ramyāṇi tīrthānyāyatanāni ca| tāni sarvāṇi saṁtyajya prabhāse tu ratirmama
and the lovely gardens of the gods, the Nandana grove, the delightful abodes of heaven, the tirthas and shrines — abandoning all of these, my delight rests in Prabhasa alone.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.4.34)
yastatra vasate devi saṁyatātmā samāhitaḥ| trikālamapi bhuṁjāno vāyubhakṣasamo bhavet
O Goddess, whoever dwells there with a disciplined self and a composed mind becomes, even while eating thrice a day, equal to one who subsists on air alone.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.4.35)
Whoever, even when beset by obstacles, does not abandon Prabhasa, is freed from old age, death, and the unending wheel of birth.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.4.36)
janmāṁtaraśatairdevi yogo vā yadi labhyate| mokṣasya ca sahasreṇa janmanāṁ labhyate na ca
O Goddess, if yoga is attained even across hundreds of births, liberation itself is not attained even in a thousand births elsewhere.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.4.37)
prabhāse tu mahādevi ye sthitā kṛtaniścayāḥ| ekena janmanā teṣāṁ mokṣo naivātra saṁśayaḥ
But O great Goddess, for those who abide in Prabhasa with firm resolve, liberation comes in a single birth — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.4.38)
prabhāse tu sthitā ye vai brāhmaṇāḥ saṁśitavratāḥ| mṛtyuṁjayena saṁyuktaṁ japaṁti śatarudriyam
Those brahmins of strict vows who abide in Prabhasa recite the Shatarudriya joined with the Mrityunjaya mantra.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.4.39)
kālāgnirudrasāṁnidhye dakṣiṇāṁ diśamāśritāḥ| jñānaṁ cotpadyate tatra ṣaṇmāsābhyaṁtareṇa tu
Resorting to the southern direction, in the presence of Kalagni-Rudra, knowledge arises there within six months.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.4.40)
śivastu procyate vedo nāmaparyāyavācakaiḥ| tasya cātmasvarūpaṁ tu śatarudraṁ prakīrtitam
Shiva himself is called, by synonymous names, the Veda; and his very own essential form is proclaimed as the Shatarudra.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.4.41)
kalpeṣu vedāśca punaḥpunarāvartakāḥ smṛtāḥ| maṁtrāścaiva tathā devi muktvā tu śatarudriyam
In each kalpa, the Vedas are remembered as recurring again and again, and the mantras too, O Goddess — excepting the Shatarudriya.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.4.42)
īḍyaṁ caiva tu maṁtreṇa māmeva hi yajaṁti ye| prabhāsakṣetramāsādya te muktā nātra saṁśayaḥ
Those who worship me alone with this venerable mantra, having reached the Prabhasa field, become liberated — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.4.43)
samaṁtro'maṁtrako vāpi yastatra vasate naraḥ| so'pi yāṁ gatimāpnoti yajñairdānairna sādhyate
Whether versed in mantras or without them, whatever man dwells there attains a state not achieved even through sacrifices and gifts.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.4.44)
asminkṣetre svayaṁbhūśca sthitaḥ sākṣānmaheśvaraḥ| rudrāṇāṁ koṭayaścaiva prabhāse saṁvyavasthitāḥ
In this field the self-born Maheshvara himself abides in visible form, and crores of Rudras too are established in Prabhasa.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.4.45)
dhyāyamānāstathoṁkāraṁ sthitāḥ someśadakṣiṇe
They, meditating upon the syllable Om, stand to the south of Someshvara.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.4.46)
brahmāṁḍodaramadhye tu yāni tīrthāni suvrate| someśvaraṁ gamiṣyaṁti vaiśākhasya caturdaśī
O one of holy vows, whatever tirthas exist within the belly of the cosmic egg all go to Someshvara on the fourteenth day of Vaishakha.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.4.47)
manobuddhirahaṁkāraḥ kāmakrodhau tathā'pare| ete rakṣaṁti satataṁ someśaṁ pāpanāśanam
Mind, intellect, ego, desire and anger, and others besides — these ever guard sin-destroying Someshvara.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.4.48)
na sā gatiḥ kurukṣetre gaṁgādvāre tripuṣkare| yā gatirvihitā puṁsāṁ prabhāsakṣetravāsinām
Not in Kurukshetra, not at Gangadvara, not at Tripushkara is there the state that is ordained for men who dwell in the Prabhasa field.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.4.49)
tiryagyonigatāḥ sattvā ye prabhāse kṛtālayāḥ| kālena nidhanaṁ prāptāstepi yāṁti parāṁ gatim
Even creatures born into animal wombs who make their home in Prabhasa, and who in time meet death there, attain the supreme goal.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.4.50)
tadguhyaṁ devadevasya tattīrthaṁ tattapovanam| tatra brahmādayo devā nārāyaṇapurogamāḥ
That is the secret abode of the God of gods, that is the tirtha, that is the grove of austerity; there Brahma and the other gods, with Narayana at their head,
Verse 51 (skanda.7.4.51)
yoginaśca tathā sāṁkhyā bhagavaṁtaṁ sanātanam| upāsate prabhāsaṁ tu madbhaktā matparāyaṇāḥ
and yogis, and followers of Sankhya, worship the eternal Lord in Prabhasa, being my devotees, wholly devoted to me.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.4.52)
aṣṭau māsānvihāraḥ syādyatīnāṁ saṁyatātmanām| eke ca caturo māsānaṣṭau vā niyataṁ vaset
For ascetics of disciplined self, wandering continues for eight months; some dwell fixed in one place for four months, or for eight.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.4.53)
prabhāse tu praviṣṭānāṁ vihārastu na vidyate| atra yogaśca mokṣaśca prāpyate durlabho naraiḥ
But for those who have entered Prabhasa, there is no wandering elsewhere; here both yoga and liberation, so hard for men to attain, are gained.
Verse 54 (skanda.7.4.54)
tasmātprabhāsaṁ saṁtyajya nānyadgacchettapovanam| prabhāsaṁ ye na sevaṁte mūḍhāste tamasā vṛtāḥ
Therefore one should not, forsaking Prabhasa, go to any other grove of austerity; those who do not resort to Prabhasa are fools shrouded in darkness.
Verse 55 (skanda.7.4.55)
viṇmūtraretasāṁ madhye saṁbhavaṁti punaḥpunaḥ| kāmaḥ krodhastathā lobho daṁbhaḥ staṁbho'tha matsaraḥ
They are born again and again amid excrement, urine, and semen. Desire and anger, greed, hypocrisy, arrogance, and envy —
Verse 56 (skanda.7.4.56)
nidrā taṁdrā tathā'lasyaṁ paiśunyamiti te daśa| ete rakṣaṁti satataṁ someśaṁ tīrthanāyakam
— sleep, drowsiness, sloth, and slander: these are the ten. These ever stand guard around Someshvara, lord of the tirtha, keeping the unworthy at bay.
Verse 57 (skanda.7.4.57)
na prabhāse mṛtaḥ kaścinnarakaṁ yāti kilbiṣī| yāvajjīvaṁ naro yastu vasate kṛtaniścayaḥ
No sinner who dies in Prabhasa goes to hell — let alone the man who dwells there his whole life through, with firm resolve.
Verse 58 (skanda.7.4.58)
agnihotraiśca saṁnyāsairāśramaiśca supālitaiḥ| tridaṁḍairekadaṁḍaiśca śaivaiḥ pāśupatairapi
Through fire-oblations, renunciations, well-maintained stages of life, the triple-staffed and single-staffed ascetics, the Shaivas and Pashupatas as well,
Verse 59 (skanda.7.4.59)
etairanyaiśca yatibhiḥ prāpyate yatphalaṁ śubham| tatsarvaṁ labhyate devi śrīsomeśvarayātrayā
and by these and other ascetics — whatever auspicious fruit is attained by them, O Goddess, all of it is gained through the pilgrimage to Shri Someshvara.
Verse 60 (skanda.7.4.60)
eko hyarcayate liṁgaṁ tapasyati tathāparaḥ| tayormadhye tu śreṣṭho yaḥ someśaṁ ca prapūjayet
One man worships the linga, another performs austerity; between the two, the one who fully worships Someshvara is the superior.
Verse 61 (skanda.7.4.61)
yattadyoge ca sāṁkhye ca siddhāṁte paṁcarātrike| anyaiśca śāstrairvijñeyaṁ prabhāse saṁvyavasthitam
Whatever is to be known through Yoga, through Sankhya, through the Pancharatra doctrine, and through other scriptures, all of it stands established in Prabhasa.
Verse 62 (skanda.7.4.62)
liṁge caiva sthitaṁ sarvaṁ jagadetaccarācaram| tasmālliṁge sadā devaḥ pūjanīyaḥ prayatnataḥ
This entire universe of moving and unmoving things abides within the linga; therefore the god is ever to be worshipped in the linga, with due diligence.
Verse 63 (skanda.7.4.63)
mamaiva sā parā mūrtiḥ śrīsomeśākhyayā sthitā| tena caiṣā tmanātmānamārādhanaparo hyaham
That is my own supreme form, abiding under the name Shri Someshvara; and through it, by my own self worshipping my own self, I myself remain devoted to that worship.
Verse 64 (skanda.7.4.64)
anekajanmasāhasrairbhramamāṇastu janmabhiḥ| kastāṁ prāpnoti vai muktiṁ vinā someśapūjanāt
Wandering through many thousands of births, who indeed can attain that liberation without the worship of Someshvara?
Verse 65 (skanda.7.4.65)
yatkiñcidaśubhaṁ karma kṛtaṁ mānuṣabuddhinā| tatsarvaṁ vilayaṁ yāti śrīsomeśvarapūjanāt
Whatever inauspicious deed has been done through human understanding, all of it is dissolved through the worship of Shri Someshvara.
Verse 66 (skanda.7.4.66)
anekajanmakoṭībhirjaṁtubhiryatkṛtaṁ hyagham| tatsarvaṁ nāśamāyāti śrīsomeśvarapūjanāt
Whatever sin has been committed by creatures across many crores of births, all of it comes to destruction through the worship of Shri Someshvara.
Verse 67 (skanda.7.4.67)
tīrthāni yāni loke'sminsevyaṁte pāpamokṣibhiḥ| tāni sarvāṇi śuddhyarthaṁ prabhāse saṁviśaṁti hi
Whatever tirthas in this world are resorted to by those seeking release from sin, all of them, for the sake of their own purification, enter into Prabhasa.
Verse 68 (skanda.7.4.68)
yo'sau kālāgnirudrastu procyate vedavādibhiḥ| so'yaṁ bhairavanāmnā tu prabhāse saṁvyavasthitaḥ
He who is spoken of by the exponents of the Veda as Kalagni-Rudra — that very one abides in Prabhasa under the name Bhairava.
Verse 69 (skanda.7.4.69)
janānāṁ duṣkṛtaṁ sarvaṁ kṣetramadhye vyavasthitaḥ| bhairavaṁ rūpamāsthāya nāśayāmi sureśvari
O queen of the gods, established in the middle of the field, having assumed the form of Bhairava, I destroy all the evil deeds of men.
Verse 70 (skanda.7.4.70)
jagatsarvaṁ caritvā tu sthito'haṁ sacarācaram| tena bhairavanāmāhaṁ prabhāse saṁvyavasthitaḥ
Having roamed through the entire universe of moving and unmoving things, I abide within it; and for this reason I am established in Prabhasa under the name Bhairava.
Verse 71 (skanda.7.4.71)
agninā yatra taptaṁ tu divyābdānāṁ caturyugam| meghavāhanakalpe tu tatra liṁgaṁ babhūva ha
Where Agni performed austerity for a Mahayuga of divine years, there, in the Meghavahana kalpa, the linga came into being.
Verse 72 (skanda.7.4.72)
agnimīḍeti vedoktaprabhāvaḥ surasuṁdari| kālāgnirudranāmā ca devaiḥ sarvairudāhṛtam
O lovely one among the gods, he whose power is declared by the Vedic hymn beginning 'Agnim ile', by that very one all the gods have named Kalagni-Rudra.
Verse 73 (skanda.7.4.73)
agnīśāneti deveśi nāmatritayamucyate| kalpekalpe tu nāmāni kathituṁ naiva śakyate| asaṁkhyatvācca kalpānāṁ brahmaṇā ca varānane
O Mistress of the gods, Agni, Ishana — thus a triad of names is spoken; but the names in each and every kalpa cannot possibly be told, O fair one, owing to the countlessness of the kalpas and of the successive Brahmas.
Verse 74 (skanda.7.4.74)
evaṁ caiva rahasyaṁ ca mahāgopyaṁ varānane| snehānmahatyā bhaktyā ca mayā te parikīrtitam
Thus, O fair one, this greatly secret mystery has been declared to you by me, out of affection and out of great devotion.
Verse 75 (skanda.7.4.75)
ekatastu jagatsarvaṁ karma kāṁḍe pratiṣṭhitam| yajñadānatapohomaiḥ svādhyāyaiḥ pitṛtarpaṇaiḥ
On the one hand, the entire world is established in the path of ritual action — through sacrifices, gifts, austerities, fire-oblations, scriptural study, and offerings to the ancestors,
Verse 76 (skanda.7.4.76)
upavāsairvrataiḥ kṛtsnaiścāṁdrāyaṇaśataistathā| ṣaḍrātraiśca trirātraiśca tīrthādigamanaiḥ paraiḥ
through fasts, complete observances, hundreds of Chandrayana vows, six-night and three-night vows, and other supreme pilgrimages to the tirthas,
Verse 77 (skanda.7.4.77)
āśramairvividhākārairyatibhirbrahmacāribhiḥ| vānaprasthairgṛhasthaiśca vedakarmaparāyaṇaiḥ
through the various stages of life, through ascetics and celibate students, through forest-dwellers and householders devoted to Vedic ritual,
Verse 78 (skanda.7.4.78)
anyaiśca vividhākārairlokamārgasthitaiḥ śubhaiḥ| na tatpadaṁ paraṁ devi śakyaṁ vīkṣayituṁ kvacit
and through many other auspicious means established in the customary way of the world — O Goddess, that supreme state can nowhere be glimpsed by any of these,
Verse 79 (skanda.7.4.79)
yāvanna cārcayeddevi someśaṁ liṁganāyakam| līlayā vāpi tairdraṣṭuṁ tatpadaṁ durlabhaṁ param
so long as one has not worshipped Someshvara, lord of the lingas, O Goddess — even by sport, through these means alone, that supreme state remains most difficult to behold.
Verse 80 (skanda.7.4.80)
pūjito yairjagannāthaḥ someśaḥ kila bhairavaḥ| tiryagyonigatā ye tu paśupakṣipipīlikāḥ
Those by whom Someshvara-Bhairava, Lord of the world, has been worshipped — whether they be creatures born into animal wombs, beasts, birds, or ants,
Verse 81 (skanda.7.4.81)
antarjjalagatā ye tu kṛmikīṭapataṁgakāḥ| sthāvarā jaṁgamāścānye manuṣyāḥ paśavaḥ striyaḥ
or worms, insects, and moths dwelling within water, or things fixed or moving, humans, beasts, or women,
Verse 82 (skanda.7.4.82)
bālā vṛddhāstathā ṣaṇḍhāḥ śvānagarddabhavāyasāḥ| caṁḍālāḥ puṣkasāḥ śūdrā mlecchā ye'nye viyonijāḥ
children, the aged, eunuchs, dogs, donkeys, crows, outcastes, degraded folk, shudras, barbarians, or any others born of debased wombs,
Verse 83 (skanda.7.4.83)
mūrkhāstu paṇḍitāścāpi ye cānye kutsitā bhuvi| te sarve muktimāyāṁti prabhāse ye mṛtāḥ śubhe
fools or scholars, or any other despised beings upon the earth — all of them, dying in this auspicious Prabhasa, attain liberation.
Verse 84 (skanda.7.4.84)
kālānalasya rudrasya kālarājena cāgninā| dagdhāste jaṁtavaḥ sarve prabhāse ye mṛtāḥ śubhe
Consumed by the fire of Kalagni, of Rudra the king of time, all those creatures who die in this auspicious Prabhasa are purified.
Verse 85 (skanda.7.4.85)
durllabhaṁ tu mama kṣetraṁ prabhāsaṁ devi pāpinām| na tatra labhate mṛtyuṁ pāpātmā lokavaṁdite
O Goddess, O one venerated by the world, my field of Prabhasa is hard for sinners to attain; a person of sinful soul does not even manage to obtain death there.
Verse 86 (skanda.7.4.86)
mayā dakṣiṇabhāge ca vighneśaḥ saṁpratiṣṭhitaḥ| uttare daṇḍapāṇistu kṣetrametacca rakṣati
By me, in the southern portion, Vighnesha has been established, and in the north Dandapani guards this field.

tathānye gaṇapāḥ sarve madājñāvaśavartinaḥ| kṣetraṁ rakṣaṁti deveśi teṣāṁ nāmāni me śṛṇu
Likewise all the other lords of the ganas, subject to my command, guard the field; O Mistress of the gods, hear their names from me.
Verse 88 (skanda.7.4.88)

arbudaṁ ca gaṇānāṁ ca prabhāsaṁ kṣetramāśritāḥ| dvāridvāri pracaṁḍāste śūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ
and a hundred million ganas have taken shelter in the Prabhasa field, fierce, at every gate, trident and mace in hand,
Verse 93 (skanda.7.4.93)
prabhāsakṣetraṁ rakṣaṁti devadevasya vai gṛham| na kaścidduṣṭabuddhyā tu praviśediti saṁsthitiḥ
they guard the Prabhasa field, the very house of the God of gods; it is so ordained that none with evil intent may enter.
Verse 94 (skanda.7.4.94)

yogakṣemaṁ vahannityaṁ prabhāse bhāvitātmanām| bhīṣaṇākṣastathaiśānyāmāgneyyāṁ chāgavaktrakaḥ
ever bearing the welfare and security of the devout souls in Prabhasa; in the northeast, Bhishanaksha, and in the southeast, Chagavaktraka,

eteṁgarakṣakā madhye śatakoṭigaṇairvṛtāḥ| evaṁ rakṣaṁti bahavo hyasaṁkhyeyā gaṇeśvarāḥ
these, as bodyguards in the middle, are surrounded by a hundred crore ganas; thus many countless lords of the ganas keep guard.
Verse 100 (skanda.7.4.100)
kalikalmaṣasaṁbhūtyā yeṣāṁ copahatā matiḥ| na teṣāṁ tadbhavedgamyaṁ sthānamardhendumauliniḥ

antardhānaṁ gatairnityaṁ prabhāsaṁ tu niṣevyate| saptalokeṣu ye saṁti siddhāḥ pātālavāsinaḥ| pradakṣiṇaṁ te kurvaṁti someśaṁ kālabhairavam
resort to Prabhasa daily, having become invisible; and whatever siddhas exist in the seven worlds, even those dwelling in the netherworld, circumambulate Someshvara-Kalabhairava.
Verse 103 (skanda.7.4.103)

etāni sarvatīrthāni devaṁ someśvaraṁ prabhum| pradakṣiṇaṁ prakurvaṁti tatra liṁgaṁ stuvaṁti ca
All these tirthas circumambulate the Lord God Someshvara, and there they extol his linga in praise.
Verse 107 (skanda.7.4.107)
brahmā janārdanaścānye ye devā jagati sthitāḥ| agniliṁgasamīpasthāḥ saṁdhyākāle stuvaṁti ca
Brahma, Janardana, and whatever other gods abide in the world, present themselves near the fire-linga at twilight and offer praise.
Verse 108 (skanda.7.4.108)
ṣaṣṭikoṭisahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭikoṭiśatāni ca| sarve someśvaraṁ yāṁti māghakṛṣṇacaturddaśīm
Sixty thousand crores and sixty hundred crores of them, all go to Someshvara on the fourteenth day of the dark half of Magha.
Verse 109 (skanda.7.4.109)
tasminkāle ca yo dadyātsomeśe ghṛtakambalam
Whoever offers a ghee-blanket to Someshvara at that time —

ghṛtaṁ rasaṁ tilāndugdhaṁ jalaṁ caṁdrādhivāsitam| ekatra kṛtvā kāśmīramityetadghṛtakaṁbalam
— ghee, juice, sesame, milk, and water infused under the moonlight, all combined together with saffron: this is called the ghee-blanket.
Verse 111 (skanda.7.4.111)
śivarātryāṁ tu karttavyametadgopyaṁ mama priyam| evaṁ kṛte ca yatpuṇyaṁ gadituṁ tanna śakyate
This is to be performed on Shivaratri — it is secret, and dear to me; the merit that comes of doing so cannot be told.
Verse 112 (skanda.7.4.112)
tatra dakṣiṇabhāge tu svayaṁ bhūtavināyakam| prathamaṁ pūjayeddevi yadīcchetsiddhimātmanaḥ
There, in the southern portion, one should first worship the self-born Bhuta-Vinayaka, O Goddess, if one desires one's own accomplishment.
Verse 113 (skanda.7.4.113)
ūṣarāṇāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ prabhāsakṣetramūṣaram| pīṭhānāṁ caiva pīṭhaṁ ca kṣetrāṇāṁ kṣetramuttamam| saṁdehānāṁ ca sarveṣāmayaṁ saṁdeha uttamaḥ
Of all lands the Prabhasa field is the very land supreme; of all pithas it is the pitha; of all fields it is the supreme field; and of all doubts, this very doubt is the finest one to hold.
Verse 114 (skanda.7.4.114)
ye kecidyoginaḥ saṁti śatakoṭipravistarāḥ| teṣāṁ kṣetre prabhāse tu ratirnnānyatra kutracit

Verse 117 (skanda.7.4.117)
dakṣakopācchārīraṁ tu saṁtyajya paramā kalā| himavaṁtagṛhe jātā umānāmnā ca viśrutā
Owing to Daksha's wrath, that supreme portion cast off her body, and was born in the house of Himavan, renowned by the name Uma.
Verse 118 (skanda.7.4.118)
tena devi tvayā sārddhaṁ tatrasthā varadāḥ smṛtāḥ| navakoṭyastu cāmuṁḍāstasminkṣetre sthitāḥ svayam
For this reason, O Goddess, together with you, boon-granting Chamundas, nine crore in number, abide there of themselves in that field.
Verse 119 (skanda.7.4.119)
caitre māsi sitāṣṭamyāṁ tatra tvāṁ yadi pūjayet| eka viṁśatijanmāni dāridryaṁ tasya no bhavet
If one worships you there on the bright eighth of Chaitra, poverty does not befall that person for twenty-one births.
Verse 120 (skanda.7.4.120)
amā somena saṁyuktā kadācidyadi labhyate| tasyāṁ someśvaraṁ dṛṣṭvā koṭiyajñaphalaṁ labhet
If ever a new-moon day falls together with Monday, then, beholding Someshvara on that day, one obtains the fruit of a crore sacrifices.
Verse 121 (skanda.7.4.121)
etatkṣetraṁ mahāguhyaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam| rudrāṇāṁ koṭayo yatra ekādaśa samāsate
This field is greatly secret, the destroyer of all sins, where eleven crore Rudras sit assembled.
Verse 122 (skanda.7.4.122)
dvādaśātra dineśānāṁ vasavo'ṣṭau samāgatāḥ| gaṁdharvayakṣarakṣāṁsi asaṁkhyātā gaṇeśvarāḥ
Here the twelve Suns and the eight Vasus have gathered, and countless gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, and lords of the ganas.
Verse 123 (skanda.7.4.123)
umāpi tatra pārśvasthā sarvadevaistu saṁstutā| naṁdī ca gaṇanātho yo devadevasya śūlinaḥ
Uma too stands there at his side, praised by all the gods; and Nandi, lord of the ganas of the trident-bearing God of gods,
Verse 124 (skanda.7.4.124)
mahākālasya ye cānye gaṇapāḥ saṁti pārśvagāḥ| gaṁgā ca yamunā caiva tathā devī sarasvatī
and whatever other lords of the ganas stand at Mahakala's side, and the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the goddess Sarasvati,
Verse 125 (skanda.7.4.125)
anyāśca saritaḥ puṇyā nadāścaiva hradāstathā| samudrāḥ parvatāḥ kūpā vanaspataya eva ca
other sacred rivers, streams, and lakes, oceans, mountains, wells, and the very lords of the forest,
Verse 126 (skanda.7.4.126)
sthāvaraṁ jaṁgamaṁ caiva prabhāse tu samāgatam| anye caiva gaṇāstatra prabhāse saṁvyavasthitāḥ
everything fixed and moving has gathered in Prabhasa; and many other hosts besides stand established there in Prabhasa.
Verse 127 (skanda.7.4.127)
na mayā kathitāḥ sarva uddeśena kvacitkvacit| bhaktyā paramayā yukto devadevi vināyakam| tṛtīyaṁ pūjayettatra vāṁchetkṣetraphalaṁ yadi
I have not told all of them, only mentioned them here and there in brief; O Goddess, if one desires the fruit of the field, one should, joined with supreme devotion, worship Vinayaka there a third time.
Verse 128 (skanda.7.4.128)
dvādaśaivaṁ tathā cāṣṭau catvāriṁśacca koṭayaḥ| nadīnāmagnitīrthasya dvāre tiṣṭhaṁti bhāmini
O radiant one, thus twelve, and eight, and forty crore rivers stand at the gate of the Agni-tirtha.
Verse 129 (skanda.7.4.129)
nirmālyalaṁghanaṁ kiṁcidajñātādyadi vai kṛtam| tatsarvaṁ vilayaṁ yāti agnitīrthasya darśanāt
If even the offense of stepping over sacred offerings has been unknowingly committed, all of it is dissolved by the mere sight of the Agni-tirtha.
Verse 130 (skanda.7.4.130)
O Goddess, what need is there for many words — this field of great power cannot be fully described even in a hundred crore kalpas.
Verse 131 (skanda.7.4.131)
ye cāṁtarikṣe bhuvi ye ca devāstīrthāni vai yāni digaṁtareṣu| kṣetraṁ prabhāsaṁ pravaraṁ hi teṣāṁ someśvaraṁ devi tathā variṣṭham
Of whatever exists in the sky and on the earth, of the gods, and of the tirthas scattered through the quarters of space — the field of Prabhasa is foremost among them all, and, O Goddess, Someshvara likewise is the very best.
Verse 132 (skanda.7.4.132)
ye cāṁḍajāścodbhijāścaiva jīvāḥ sasvedajāścaiva jarāyujāśca| devi prabhāse tu gatāsavo'tha muktiṁ paraṁ yāṁti na saṁśayo'tra
Whatever beings are born of eggs, or sprout from the earth, or are born of sweat, or born of the womb — O Goddess, breathing their last in Prabhasa, they attain supreme liberation; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 133 (skanda.7.4.133)
iti nigaditametaddevadevasya citraṁ caritamidamaciṁtyaṁ devi te śaṁkarasya| kalikaluṣavidāraṁ sarvaloko'pi yāyādyadi paṭhati śṛṇoti stauti nityaṁ ya itthaṁ
Thus, O Goddess, has this wondrous, inconceivable account of Shankara, the God of gods, been related to you — a tearer-away of the sin of the Kali age; whoever ever reads, hears, or praises it in this way, through him the entire world too may attain that same goal.
