The Glory of Chandishvara

Verse 1 (skanda.7.42.1)

॥ ईश्वर उवाच ॥ ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि चण्डीशं देवमुत्तमम् ॥ सोमेशादीशदिग्भागे धनुषां सप्तके स्थितम्

|| īśvara uvāca || tato gacchenmahādevi caṇḍīśaṁ devamuttamam || someśādīśadigbhāge dhanuṣāṁ saptake sthitam

Ishvara said: "Then one should go, O great goddess, to the excellent god Chandisha, situated seven bow-lengths from Somesha, in the direction of Ishana (north-east)."

Verse 2 (skanda.7.42.2)

दण्डपाणेस्तु भवनाद्दक्षिणे नातिदूरगम् ॥ चंड्या प्रतिष्ठितं पूर्वं चण्डेनाराधितं ततः

daṇḍapāṇestu bhavanāddakṣiṇe nātidūragam || caṁḍyā pratiṣṭhitaṁ pūrvaṁ caṇḍenārādhitaṁ tataḥ

Not far to the south of the abode of Dandapani, established formerly by Chandi, and then worshipped by Chanda, the attendant—

Verse 3 (skanda.7.42.3)

गणेन मम देवेशि तत्कृत्वा दुष्करं तपः ॥ तेन चण्डेश्वरं लिंगं प्रख्यातं धरणीतले

gaṇena mama deveśi tatkṛtvā duṣkaraṁ tapaḥ || tena caṇḍeśvaraṁ liṁgaṁ prakhyātaṁ dharaṇītale

—by that attendant of mine, O queen of gods, who performed most difficult austerity, by him the linga Chandeshvara became renowned upon the earth.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.42.4)

स्नापयेत्पयसा पूर्वं दध्ना घृतयुतेन च ॥ मधुनेक्षुरसेनैव कुंकुमेन विलेपयेत्

snāpayetpayasā pūrvaṁ dadhnā ghṛtayutena ca || madhunekṣurasenaiva kuṁkumena vilepayet

One should first bathe it with milk, then with curds mixed with ghee, and with honey and sugarcane juice; one should anoint it with saffron.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.42.5)

कर्पूरोशीरमिश्रेण मृगनाभिरसेन च ॥ चन्दनेन सुगन्धेन पुष्पैः संपूजयेत्ततः

karpūrośīramiśreṇa mṛganābhirasena ca || candanena sugandhena puṣpaiḥ saṁpūjayettataḥ

With camphor mixed with fragrant root, and with musk, and with fragrant sandal-paste and flowers, one should then worship it.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.42.6)

दग्ध्वा धूपं पुरो देवि ततो देवस्य चागुरुम् ॥ वस्त्रैः संपूजयेत्पश्चादात्मवित्तानुसारतः

dagdhvā dhūpaṁ puro devi tato devasya cāgurum || vastraiḥ saṁpūjayetpaścādātmavittānusārataḥ

Having burned incense before the god, O goddess, and then aloe-wood, one should worship him afterward with garments, according to one's means.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.42.7)

नैवेद्यं परमान्नं च दत्त्वा दीपसम न्वितम् ॥ ततो दद्याद्द्विजातिभ्यो यथाशक्त्या तु दक्षिणाम्

naivedyaṁ paramānnaṁ ca dattvā dīpasama nvitam || tato dadyāddvijātibhyo yathāśaktyā tu dakṣiṇām

Having offered rich food-offerings and sweet rice, along with lamps, one should then give a fee to the twice-born, according to one's ability.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.42.8)

दक्षिणां दिशमास्थाय यत्किंचित्तत्र दीयते॥ चण्डीशस्य वरारोहे तत्सर्वं चाक्षयं भवेत्

dakṣiṇāṁ diśamāsthāya yatkiṁcittatra dīyate|| caṇḍīśasya varārohe tatsarvaṁ cākṣayaṁ bhavet

Facing the southern direction, whatever is given there to Chandisha, O lovely one, all of it becomes imperishable.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.42.9)

यः श्राद्धं कुरुते तत्र चण्डीशस्य तु दक्षिणे ॥ आकल्पं तृप्तिमायांति पितरस्तस्य भामिनि

yaḥ śrāddhaṁ kurute tatra caṇḍīśasya tu dakṣiṇe || ākalpaṁ tṛptimāyāṁti pitarastasya bhāmini

Whoever performs shraddha there, to the south of Chandisha, O fair lady, his ancestors attain satisfaction until the end of the kalpa.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.42.10)

अयने चोत्तरे प्राप्ते यः कुर्याद्घृत कम्बलम् ॥ न स भूयोऽत्र संसारे जन्म प्राप्नोति दारुणम्

ayane cottare prāpte yaḥ kuryādghṛta kambalam || na sa bhūyo'tra saṁsāre janma prāpnoti dāruṇam

Whoever, when the northern solstice arrives, makes an offering of ghee and a blanket, does not obtain again a dreadful birth in this world.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.42.11)

एवं कृत्वा नरो भक्त्या यात्रां देवस्य शूलिनः ॥ निर्माल्यातिक्रमोद्भूतैरज्ञानाद्भक्षणोद्भवैः ॥ पापैः प्रमुच्यते जंतुस्तथाऽन्यैः कर्मसंभवैः

evaṁ kṛtvā naro bhaktyā yātrāṁ devasya śūlinaḥ || nirmālyātikramodbhūtairajñānādbhakṣaṇodbhavaiḥ || pāpaiḥ pramucyate jaṁtustathā'nyaiḥ karmasaṁbhavaiḥ

A man who thus performs the pilgrimage of the trident-bearing god with devotion is freed from sins arising from transgression against the discarded offerings (nirmalya) and from those arising from eating them out of ignorance, as well as other sins arising from former deeds.
