Verse 1 (skanda.7.465.1)
śrīprahlāda uvāca| pūjayedgaṇanāthaṁ taṁ rukmiṇaṁ rukmabhūṣitam| durvāsasaṁ ca kṛṣṇaṁ ca balabhadraṁ ca bhaktitaḥ
Shri Prahlada said: One should worship that lord of the ganas, Rukmi, adorned with gold, and with devotion worship Durvasas, Krishna, and Balabhadra as well.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.465.2)
yajatyeko mahāyajñaiḥ saṁpūrṇavaradakṣiṇaiḥ| ekaḥ paśyati deveśaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ tulyaphalau hi tau
One man performs great sacrifices with full and excellent gifts of dakshina; another merely beholds the Lord Krishna — the fruit of both is indeed equal.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.465.3)
vāpīkūpataḍāgāni karotyekaḥ samāhitaḥ| ekaḥ paśyati deveśaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ tulyaphalau hi tau
One man, with focused mind, has step-wells, wells, and ponds constructed; another merely beholds the Lord Krishna — the fruit of both is indeed equal.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.465.4)
gobhūtilahiraṇyādi dadātyeko dinedine| ekaḥ paśyati deveśaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ tulyaphalau hi tau
One man gives daily gifts of cows, land, sesame, gold, and the like; another merely beholds the Lord Krishna — the fruit of both is indeed equal.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.465.5)
prāṇāyāmādisaṁyukto japadhyānaparāyaṇaḥ| ekaḥ paśyati deveśaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ tulyaphalau hi tau
One man, engaged in breath-control and the like, is devoted to recitation and meditation; another merely beholds the Lord Krishna — the fruit of both is indeed equal.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.465.6)
jāhnavyādiṣu tīrtheṣu susnātvaikaḥ samāhitaḥ| ekaḥ paśyati deveśaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ tulyaphalau hi tau
One man, with focused mind, bathes well at the Ganga and other tirthas; another merely beholds the Lord Krishna — the fruit of both is indeed equal.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.465.7)
tribhirvikramaṇairyena vikrāṁtaṁ bhuvanatrayam| trivikramaṁ ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā mucyate pātakatrayāt
He who traversed the three worlds in three strides — seeing that Trivikrama, a man is freed from the three kinds of sin.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.465.8)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ| kathaṁ traivikramī mūrtirāgateyaṁ dharātale| kalānyāsācca kṛṣṇatvaṁ kadeyaṁ prāptavatyatha
The sages said: How did this form of Trivikrama come to this earth? And through the investiture of divine portions, when did it attain the state of Krishna?
Verse 9 (skanda.7.465.9)
daitya saṁśayamasmākaṁ chettumarhasyaśeṣataḥ| durvāsasaśca kṛṣṇasya saṁbhavaḥ kathyatāmiti
O demon, you are able to resolve our doubt in full — tell us of the connection between Durvasas and Krishna.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.465.10)
prahlāda uvāca| tacchrūyatāṁ dvijaśreṣṭhā yathā mūrtistrivikramī| durvāsasā samāyuktā saṁbhūtā dharaṇītale
Prahlada said: O best of brahmins, hear now how that form of Trivikrama, joined with Durvasas, came to be manifest upon this earth.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.465.11)
pūrvaṁ kṛtayugasyāṁte balinā ca puraṁdaraḥ| nirjitya bhraṁśitaḥ sthānāttadarthaṁ madhusūdanaḥ
Long ago, at the end of the Krita age, Bali conquered Purandara (Indra) and cast him down from his position; for that reason Madhusudana took incarnation.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.465.12)
kaśyapādvāmano jajñe tato'bhūcca trivikramaḥ| tribhiḥ kramairmitāṁllokānākramya madhuhā hariḥ
From Kashyapa was Vamana born, and thereafter he became Trivikrama; Hari, the slayer of Madhu, overran the worlds measured out by his three strides.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.465.13)
baliṁ cakāra bhagavānpātālatalavāsinam| bhaktyā tvananyayā kṛṣṇo daityena paritoṣitaḥ
The Lord made Bali a dweller of the netherworld. Krishna was fully satisfied by the demon's unwavering devotion.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.465.14)
svayaṁ caivā'vasattatra bhaktyā krīto haristadā| anugrahāya bhagavāndvārapālo babhūva ha
Hari, bought over by that devotion, himself dwelt there too; out of grace, the Lord became his very gatekeeper.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.465.15)
durvāsāścāpi bhagavānātreyo munisattamaḥ| aṭaṁstīrthāni mokṣārthaṁ muktikṣetramaciṁtayat
The blessed Durvasas too, best of sages and son of Atri, while wandering among the tirthas seeking liberation, pondered upon a field of liberation.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.465.16)
evaṁ citayamānaḥ sa jñānadṛṣṭyā mahāmuniḥ| gomatyā saṁgamo yatra cakratīrthena bho dvijāḥ
As he thus reflected, that great sage beheld with the eye of knowledge — O brahmins — the place where the Gomati meets the Chakra Tirtha,
Verse 17 (skanda.7.465.17)
tanmuktikṣetramājñāya gamanāya matiṁ dadhe| sotītya nagaragrāmānudyānāni vanāni ca
and, recognising that as the field of liberation, resolved to go there. Passing through cities, villages, gardens, and forests,
Verse 18 (skanda.7.465.18)
ānarttaviṣayaṁ prāpya daityabhūmiṁ viveśa ha| niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkārāṁ vedadhvanivivarjjitām
he reached the land of Anarta and entered the territory of the demons, a land devoid of Vedic study and ritual exclamations, bereft of the sound of Vedic recitation,
Verse 19 (skanda.7.465.19)
kuśena daityarājena sevitāṁ pālitāṁ tathā| bahumleccha samākīrṇāmadharmopārjakairjanaiḥ
served and ruled by the demon-king Kusha, and thronged with many mlecchas and folk who earned their living by unrighteous means.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.465.20)
pratyāsannāmiti jñātvā cakratīrthamagāddvijaḥ| snātvā ca saṁgame puṇye mokṣye'haṁ ca kṛtāhnikaḥ
Knowing it to be near, the brahmin went towards Chakra Tirtha, thinking: 'Bathing at that sacred confluence and performing my daily rites, I shall attain liberation.'
Verse 21 (skanda.7.465.21)
iti kṛtvā sa niyamaṁ yayau śīghraṁ munistadā| snātvā śīghraṁ prayāsyāmi daityabhūmiṁ vihāya ca
Having made this resolve, the sage swiftly went on his way, thinking: 'Having bathed quickly, I shall leave this land of the demons.'
Verse 22 (skanda.7.465.22)
ityevaṁ ciṁtayanmārge śīghrameva jagāma saḥ| dṛṣṭvā ca saṁgamaṁ puṇyaṁ gomatyā sāgarasya ca
Thinking thus, he hurried along the road, and beheld the sacred confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.465.23)
nidhāya vāsasī tatra mṛdamālabhya gomayam| śikhāṁ ca baddhvā karayoḥ kṛtvā ca niyataḥ kuśān
Setting aside his garments there, touching clay and cow-dung, binding up his topknot, and duly taking kusha grass in his hands,
Verse 24 (skanda.7.465.24)
Even as that brahmin began to bathe, he was spotted by the evil-natured demons, who cried out, 'Who is this? Kill him, kill him!'
Verse 25 (skanda.7.465.25)
asmābhiḥ pālite deśe kaḥ snāti manujādhamaḥ| bruvaṁta iti jaghnuste jānubhirmuṣṭibhistathā
'What lowly man dares bathe in this land protected by us?' — saying this, they beat him with their knees and fists.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.465.26)
brāhmaṇo'haṁ na haṁtavyaḥ śrutvā cā'tīva pīḍitaḥ| taṁ dṛṣṭvā hanyamānaṁ tu brāhmaṇaṁ tairdurātmabhiḥ
'I am a brahmin, I should not be slain' — hearing this, they only tormented him further. Seeing that brahmin being beaten by those wicked souls,
Verse 27 (skanda.7.465.27)
nivārayāmāsa ca tānrururnāma mahāsuraḥ| jagṛhustasya vastrāṇi kuśāṁste cikṣipurjale
the great demon named Ruru attempted to restrain them. They seized his garments and flung his kusha grass into the water.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.465.28)
cakarṣuścaraṇau gṛhya śapaṁto duṣṭacetasaḥ| pade gṛhītvā tamṛṣiṁ nītvā sīmni vyasarjayan
Those evil-hearted ones, cursing him, seized his feet and dragged him; gripping the sage by the feet, they hauled him to the boundary and cast him there.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.465.29)
taṁ tadā mūrchitaprāyaṁ dṛṣṭvocuḥ kupitāśca te| atrāgato yadi punarhaniṣyāmo na saṁśayaḥ| ānarttaviṣayāṁstānvai dṛṣṭvā tatra jalāśayam
Seeing him nearly fainted, those enraged demons declared, 'If he comes here again, we shall surely kill him' — and having witnessed those denizens of Anarta and that pool,
Verse 30 (skanda.7.465.30)
prāṇasaṁśayamāpannastataściṁtāparo'bhavat| śapyehaṁ yadi daiteyāṁstapasaḥ kiṁ vyayena me
Realising his life to be in peril, he fell into anxious thought: 'If I curse these demons, it will only be a waste of my austerities.'
Verse 31 (skanda.7.465.31)
athavā niyamabhraṣṭastyakṣye cedaṁ kalevaram| mama pakṣaṁ ca kaḥ kuryyātko me dāsyati jīvitam
Or else, my observance broken, I should simply abandon this body. Who will take my side? Who will grant me life?
Verse 32 (skanda.7.465.32)
cakratīrthe ca kaḥ snānaṁ kārayiṣyati māmiha| ko vā daityagaṇānetāñchakto jetuṁ mahāmṛdhe| taṁ vinā puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ bhaktānāmabhayapradam
Who here can grant me bathing at Chakra Tirtha? Who is capable of conquering these hosts of demons in mighty battle, save that lotus-eyed one who grants fearlessness to his devotees?
Verse 33 (skanda.7.465.33)
brahmādīnāṁ ca netāraṁ śaraṇāgatavatsalam| cakrahastaṁ vinā medya konyaḥ śarmaprado bhavet
Who else, today, other than that wielder of the discus — leader of even Brahma and the gods, tender towards those who take refuge in him — could grant me comfort?
Verse 34 (skanda.7.465.34)
iti dhyātvā ca suciraṁ jñātvā pātālavāsinam| ātreyo viṣṇuśaraṇaṁ jagāma dharaṇītalam
Meditating thus for a long while, and knowing him to dwell in the netherworld, Atreya went to the nether realm, seeking refuge in Vishnu.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.465.35)
upavāsaiḥ kṛśo dīno bhūtalaṁ praviveśa ha| sa daityarājabhavanaṁ gandharvāpsarasāvṛtam
Emaciated and wretched from fasting, he entered that place — the demon-king's palace, thronged with gandharvas and apsaras,
Verse 36 (skanda.7.465.36)
śobhitaṁ suramukhyena viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā| durvāsāḥ praviveśātha prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā
and adorned by the mighty and foremost of gods, Vishnu himself. Durvasas entered there, his inner self filled with joy.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.465.37)
durvāsasamathāyāṁtaṁ dṛṣṭvā daityapatistadā| pratyutthāyārhayāṁcakre svāsane saṁnyaveśayat
Seeing Durvasas approaching, the lord of the demons then rose to honour him and seated him upon his own throne.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.465.38)
madhuparkaṁ ca gāṁ caiva dattvārghyaṁ pārśvataḥ sthitaḥ| provāca praṇato brahmankathamatrāgato bhavān
Offering madhuparka, a cow, and water of hospitality, he stood beside him and said humbly, 'O Brahmin, how have you come here?'
Verse 39 (skanda.7.465.39)
sukhopaviṣṭaḥ sa ṛṣistatrāpaśyattrivikramam| daityendradvāradeśe tu tiṣṭhaṁtamakutobhayam
As the sage sat there comfortably, he saw Trivikrama, standing fearlessly at the doorway of the lord of demons.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.465.40)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā devadeveśaṁ śrīvatsāṁkaṁ caturbhujam| ruroda sa ṛṣiśreṣṭhastrāhitrāhītyuvāca ca
Seeing that god of gods, four-armed and marked with the Shrivatsa, that best of sages wept and cried out, 'Save me, save me!'
Verse 41 (skanda.7.465.41)
saṁsārabhayabhītānāṁ duḥkhitānāṁ janārdana| śatrubhiḥ paribhūtānāṁ śaraṇaṁ bhava keśava
O Janardana, be the refuge of those terrified by the fear of worldly existence, of the sorrowful, and of those humiliated by enemies, O Keshava.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.465.42)
mama duḥkhābhitaptasya śatrubhiḥ karṣitasya ca| parābhūtasya dīnasya kṣudhayā pīḍitasya ca
I am scorched by sorrow, dragged about by enemies, humiliated, wretched, and afflicted by hunger.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.465.43)
apūrṇaniyamasyā'tha kleśitasya ca dānavaiḥ| brahmaṇyadeva viprasya śaraṇaṁ bhava keśava
My vow remains unfulfilled, and I have been tormented by demons; O god who cherishes brahmins, be the refuge of this brahmin, O Keshava.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.465.44)
ityuktvā darśayāmāsa śarīraṁ daityatāḍitam| tadbrāhmaṇāvamānaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā cukrodha vāmanaḥ
Having said this, he showed his body, battered by the demons. Seeing that insult to the brahmin, Vamana grew angry.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.465.45)
kenāpamānito brahmanniyamaḥ kena khaṇḍitaḥ| kathayasva mahābhāga dharmapāle mayi sthite
O Brahmin, who has insulted you, who has broken your vow? Tell me, O blessed one, now that I, the guardian of dharma, am here.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.465.46)
durvāsā uvāca| muktitīrthamahaṁ jñātvā jñānena madhusūdana| cakratīrthaṁ gataḥ snātuṁ yātrāyāṁ harṣasaṁyutaḥ
Durvasas said: O Madhusudana, having recognised through knowledge the tirtha of liberation, I journeyed there joyfully to bathe at Chakra Tirtha.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.465.47)
akṛtasnāna evā'haṁ dṛṣṭo daityairdurāsadaiḥ| gale gṛhītaḥ kṛṣṇāhaṁ muṣṭibhistāḍitastathā
Even before I had bathed, those formidable demons spotted me. O Krishna, I was seized by the throat and beaten with fists.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.465.48)
balādgṛhītvā vāsāṁsi kuśāṁścaivākṣataiḥ saha| jale kṣiptvā caraṇayorgṛhītvā māṁ samākṛṣan
They forcibly seized my garments, kusha grass, and unbroken rice and flung them into the water, and, gripping my feet, dragged me about.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.465.49)
sīmāṁte māṁ tu prakṣipya procuste dānavādhamāḥ| haniṣyāmo yadi punarāgaṁtāsi na saṁśayaḥ
Casting me to the boundary's edge, those vile demons said, 'If you come again, we shall surely kill you.'
Verse 50 (skanda.7.465.50)
snāto'haṁ cakratīrthe tu kariṣye bhojanaṁ vibho| tasmātsnāpaya goviṁda niyamaṁ saphalaṁ kuru
O Lord, having bathed at Chakra Tirtha, I shall take my meal. Therefore, O Govinda, grant me that bathing, and fulfil my vow.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.465.51)
tava prasādātsnātvā'haṁ bhuktvā ca prītamānasaḥ| pratijñāṁ saphalāṁ kṛtvā vicariṣye mahīmimām
By your grace, having bathed and eaten, with a contented mind and my vow fulfilled, I shall wander over this earth.
