Durvasas' Meeting with Krishna and Balarama, and His Bathing Rite at Chakra Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.7.466.1)

प्रह्लाद उवाच। तच्छ्रुत्वा देवदेवेशश्चिंतयित्वा पुनःपुनः। उवाच वचनं तत्र दुर्वाससमकल्मषम्

prahlāda uvāca| tacchrutvā devadeveśaściṁtayitvā punaḥpunaḥ| uvāca vacanaṁ tatra durvāsasamakalmaṣam

Prahlada said: Hearing this, the god of gods pondered again and again, and then spoke these words there to the sinless Durvasas.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.466.2)

श्रीभगवानुवाच। पराधीनोऽस्मि विप्रेन्द्र भक्त्या क्रीतोऽस्मि नान्यथा। बलेरादेशकारी च दैत्येन्द्रवशगो ह्यहम्

śrībhagavānuvāca| parādhīno'smi viprendra bhaktyā krīto'smi nānyathā| baler ādeśakārī ca daityendravaśago hyaham

Shri Bhagavan said: O chief of brahmins, I am not my own master — I have been bought solely by devotion. I carry out Bali's commands and am subject to the lord of demons.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.466.3)

तस्मात्प्रार्थय विप्रेन्द्र दैत्यं वैरोचनिं बलिम्। अस्यादेशात्करिष्यामि यदभीष्टं तवाधुना

tasmātprārthaya viprendra daityaṁ vairocaniṁ balim| asyādeśātkariṣyāmi yadabhīṣṭaṁ tavādhunā

Therefore, O chief of brahmins, entreat the demon Bali, son of Virochana; only at his command shall I now grant your desire.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.466.4)

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं विप्रो बलिं प्रोवाच सत्वरम्। यज्वनां त्वं वरिष्ठश्च दातॄणां त्वं मतोऽधिकः

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ vipro baliṁ provāca satvaram| yajvanāṁ tvaṁ variṣṭhaśca dātṝṇāṁ tvaṁ mato'dhikaḥ

Hearing these words, the brahmin quickly said to Bali: 'You are the foremost of sacrificers, and reckoned greatest among the givers of gifts.'

Verse 5 (skanda.7.466.5)

पारावारः कृपायाश्च दयां कुरु ममोपरि। प्रेषयस्व महाभाग देवं दैत्यविनिग्रहे

pārāvāraḥ kṛpāyāśca dayāṁ kuru mamopari| preṣayasva mahābhāga devaṁ daityavinigrahe

You are an ocean of compassion — show mercy upon me. O illustrious one, send the Lord to subdue the demons.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.466.6)

संपूर्णनियमः स्नातस्त्वत्प्रसादाद्भवाम्यहम्। तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं दैत्यो नातिहृष्टमनास्तदा। दुर्वाससमुवाचेदं नैतदेवं भविष्यति

saṁpūrṇaniyamaḥ snātastvatprasādādbhavāmyaham| tacchrutvā vacanaṁ daityo nātihṛṣṭamanāstadā| durvāsasamuvācedaṁ naitadevaṁ bhaviṣyati

By your grace alone shall I bathe and have my observance fulfilled.' Hearing these words, the demon was not greatly pleased, and said to Durvasas: 'This shall not be so.'

Verse 7 (skanda.7.466.7)

अन्यत्प्रार्थय विप्रेन्द्र यत्ते मनसि वर्त्तते। तद्दास्यामि न सन्देहो यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुर्लभम्

anyatprārthaya viprendra yatte manasi varttate| taddāsyāmi na saṁdeho yadyapi syātsudurlabham

O chief of brahmins, ask for something else, whatever else is in your mind; that I shall give, without doubt, however difficult to obtain it may be.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.466.8)

आत्मानमपि दास्यामि नाहं त्यक्ष्ये हरिं द्विज। बहुभिः सुकृतैः प्राप्तं कथं त्यक्ष्यामि केशवम्

ātmānamapi dāsyāmi nāhaṁ tyakṣye hariṁ dvija| bahubhiḥ sukṛtaiḥ prāptaṁ kathaṁ tyakṣyāmi keśavam

I would even give my own self, O brahmin, but I shall not give up Hari. How could I abandon Keshava, obtained through so many meritorious deeds?

Verse 9 (skanda.7.466.9)

दुर्वासा उवाच। नातिलुब्धं हि मां विद्धि किमन्यत्प्रार्थयाम्यहम्। रक्ष मे जीवितं दैत्य प्रेषयस्व जनार्द्दनम्

durvāsā uvāca| nātilubdhaṁ hi māṁ viddhi kimanyatprārthayāmyaham| rakṣa me jīvitaṁ daitya preṣayasva janārddanam

Durvasas said: Do not think me overly greedy — what else should I ask for? O demon, save my life, and send forth Janardana.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.466.10)

बलिरुवाच। जानासि त्वं यथा विप्र हिरण्याक्षं निपातितम्। भूत्वा यज्ञवराहस्तु दधारोर्वीं बलाद्दिवि

balir uvāca| jānāsi tvaṁ yathā vipra hiraṇyākṣaṁ nipātitam| bhūtvā yajñavārāhastu dadhārorvīṁ balāddivi

Bali said: O brahmin, you know how, having become the sacrificial Boar, he struck down Hiranyaksha and forcibly bore up the earth into the heavens.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.466.11)

यथा च दैत्यप्रवरमवध्यं दैत्यदानवैः। हतवान्हिरण्यकशिपुं नृसिंहः सर्वगः प्रभुः

yathā ca daityapravaramavadhyaṁ daityadānavaiḥ| hatavānhiraṇyakaśipuṁ nṛsiṁhaḥ sarvagaḥ prabhuḥ

And how the all-pervading Lord Narasimha slew that foremost demon Hiranyakashipu, unslayable by demons and danavas alike.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.466.12)

तथैव वृत्रं नमुचिं रक्षो लंकेश संज्ञकम्। जघान मायया विष्णुः सुरार्थं सुरसत्तमः

tathaiva vṛtraṁ namuciṁ rakṣo laṁkeśa saṁjñakam| jaghāna māyayā viṣṇuḥ surārthaṁ surasattamaḥ

In the same way, Vishnu, foremost of gods, by his own maya, slew Vritra, Namuchi, and the rakshasa known as the Lord of Lanka, for the sake of the gods.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.466.13)

प्रथमं वामनो भूत्वा ह्ययाचत पदत्रयम्। पुनस्त्रिविक्रमो भूत्वा भुवनानि जहार मे

prathamaṁ vāmano bhūtvā hyayācata padatrayam| punastrivikramo bhūtvā bhuvanāni jahāra me

First, becoming Vamana, he asked for three paces of land; then, becoming Trivikrama, he took away all my worlds.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.466.14)

मया पुण्यवशाद्विष्णुर्यदि प्राप्तः कथञ्चन। नाहं त्यक्ष्ये जगन्नाथं मायावामनकं प्रभुम्

mayā puṇyavaśādviṣṇuryadi prāptaḥ kathañcana| nāhaṁ tyakṣye jagannāthaṁ māyāvāmanakaṁ prabhum

If, by the power of merit, I have somehow attained Vishnu, I shall not give up the Lord of the universe, who assumed the illusory form of a dwarf.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.466.15)

दुर्वासा उवाच। नाहं भोक्ष्ये विना स्नानं गोमत्युदधिसंगमे। यदि न प्रेष्यसि हरिं ततस्त्यक्ष्ये कलेवरम्

durvāsā uvāca| nāhaṁ bhokṣye vinā snānaṁ gomatyudadhisaṁgame| yadi na preṣyasi hariṁ tatastyakṣye kalevaram

Durvasas said: I shall not eat without bathing at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean. If you do not send Hari, I shall abandon this body.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.466.16)

बलिरुवाच। यद्भाव्यं तद्भवतु ते यज्जानासि तथा कुरु। ब्रह्मरुद्रेन्द्रनमितं नाहं त्यक्ष्ये पदद्वयम्

balir uvāca| yadbhāvyaṁ tadbhavatu te yajjānāsi tathā kuru| brahmarudrendranamitaṁ nāhaṁ tyakṣye padadvayam

Bali said: Whatever is to happen, let it happen to you; do as you think fit. But those two feet, bowed to even by Brahma, Rudra, and Indra, I shall never give up.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.466.17)

तदा विवदमानौ तौ दृष्ट्वा स जगदीश्वरः। ब्रह्मण्यदेवः कृपया ब्राह्मणं तमुवाच ह

tadā vivadamānau tau dṛṣṭvā sa jagadīśvaraḥ| brahmaṇyadevaḥ kṛpayā brāhmaṇaṁ tamuvāca ha

Then, seeing the two of them thus disputing, the Lord of the universe, that god ever gracious to brahmins, spoke with compassion to that brahmin:

Verse 18 (skanda.7.466.18)

स्वस्थो भव द्विजश्रेष्ठ स्नापयिष्ये न संशयः। हत्वा दैत्यगणान्सर्वान्गोमत्युदधिसंगमे

svastho bhava dvijaśreṣṭha snāpayiṣye na saṁśayaḥ| hatvā daityagaṇānsarvāngomatyudadhisaṁgame

'Be at ease, O best of brahmins; I shall surely have you bathed, having slain all the demons at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.'

Verse 19 (skanda.7.466.19)

प्रह्लाद उवाच। श्रुत्वा भगवतो वाक्यं ब्राह्मणं प्रति दैत्यराट्। दृढं जग्राह चरणौ पतित्वा पादयोस्तदा

prahlāda uvāca| śrutvā bhagavato vākyaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ prati daityarāṭ| dṛḍhaṁ jagrāha caraṇau patitvā pādayostadā

Prahlada said: Hearing the Lord's words spoken to the brahmin, the demon-king fell at his feet and gripped them firmly.

Verse 20 (skanda.7.466.20)

ततः समृद्धिमगमत्पादौ दत्त्वा बलेः प्रभुः। शंखचक्रगदापाणिर्विष्णुर्दुर्वाससाऽन्वितः

tataḥ samṛddhimagamatpādau dattvā baleḥ prabhuḥ| śaṅkhacakragadāpāṇirviṣṇurdurvāsasā'nvitaḥ

Then, having granted his feet to Bali, the Lord attained his full glory; Vishnu, bearing conch, discus, and mace in hand, set out together with Durvasas.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.466.21)

प्रस्थितौ तौ तदा दृष्ट्वा दुर्वाससजनार्द्दनौ। अनन्तः पुरुषो ऽगच्छन्मुशली च हलायुधः

prasthitau tau tadā dṛṣṭvā durvāsasajanārddanau| anantaḥ puruṣo'gacchanmuśalī ca halāyudhaḥ

Seeing Durvasas and Janardana thus setting forth, the eternal Being himself, and Balarama, wielder of club and plough, also went along.

Verse 22 (skanda.7.466.22)

मुशली चाग्रतोऽगच्छत्ततो विष्णुस्त्रिविक्रमः। तयोरन्वगमद्विप्रा दुर्वासा भूतलाद्बहिः

muśalī cāgrato'gacchattato viṣṇustrivikramaḥ| tayoranvagamadviprā durvāsā bhūtalādbahiḥ

Mushali went in front, and then Vishnu Trivikrama; O brahmins, Durvasas followed behind the two of them, out from beneath the earth.

Verse 23 (skanda.7.466.23)

भित्त्वा रसातलं सर्वे समुत्तस्थुस्त्वरान्विताः। आविर्बभूवुस्तत्रैव गोमत्युदधिसंगमे

bhittvā rasātalaṁ sarve samuttasthustvarānvitāḥ| āvirbabhūvustatraiva gomatyudadhisaṁgame

Piercing through the netherworld, they all rose up swiftly and appeared right there at the confluence of the Gomati and the ocean.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.466.24)

सन्नद्धौ दृढधन्वानौ संकर्षणजनार्दनौ। ऊचतुस्तौ तदा विप्रं कुरु स्नानं यदृच्छया

sannaddhau dṛḍhadhanvānau saṁkarṣaṇajanārdanau| ūcatustau tadā vipraṁ kuru snānaṁ yadṛcchayā

Sankarshana and Janardana, armed and holding their sturdy bows, then said to the brahmin: 'Now bathe, freely and without fear.'

Verse 25 (skanda.7.466.25)

तयोस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा स्नानं चक्रे त्वरान्वितः। स्नात्वा चावश्यकं कर्म कर्तुमारभत द्विजः

tayostu vacanaṁ śrutvā snānaṁ cakre tvarānvitaḥ| snātvā cāvaśyakaṁ karma kartumārabhata dvijaḥ

Hearing their words, he bathed at once. Having bathed, the brahmin began to perform his obligatory rites.
