The Glory of the Linga of Guru (Jupiter)

Verse 1 (skanda.7.47.1)

॥ ईश्वर उवाच ॥ ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि देवं गुरुनिषेवितम्॥ उमायाः पूर्वदिग्भागे सिद्धेशाग्नेयगोचरे

|| īśvara uvāca || tato gacchenmahādevi devaṁ guruniṣevitam|| umāyāḥ pūrvadigbhāge siddheśāgneyagocare

Ishvara said: "Then one should go, O great goddess, to the god worshipped by Guru (Jupiter), in the eastern direction from Uma, within the south-eastern range of Siddhesha."

Verse 2 (skanda.7.47.2)

संस्थितं तु महल्लिंगं देवाचार्य प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥ आराध्य परया भक्त्या लिंगं वर्षसहस्रकम्

saṁsthitaṁ tu mahalliṁgaṁ devācārya pratiṣṭhitam || ārādhya parayā bhaktyā liṁgaṁ varṣasahasrakam

The great linga situated there was established by the preceptor of the gods (Brihaspati); worshipping the linga with supreme devotion for a thousand years—

Verse 3 (skanda.7.47.3)

तोषयामास देवेशं भवं शर्वमुमापतिम् ॥ प्राप्तवानखिलान्कामानप्राप्यानकृतात्मभिः

toṣayāmāsa deveśaṁ bhavaṁ śarvamumāpatim || prāptavānakhilānkāmānaprāpyānakṛtātmabhiḥ

—he pleased the lord of gods, Bhava, Sharva, the husband of Uma. He obtained all desires, unattainable by those of uncultivated souls.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.47.4)

देवानां चैव पूज्यत्वं प्राप्य ज्ञानमथैश्वरम्॥ ग्रहत्वं च तथा प्राप्य मोदते दिवि सांप्रतम्

devānāṁ caiva pūjyatvaṁ prāpya jñānamathaiśvaram|| grahatvaṁ ca tathā prāpya modate divi sāṁpratam

Having attained the status of one worshipped even by the gods, and divine knowledge, and having also attained the status of a planet, he now rejoices in heaven.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.47.5)

तं दृष्ट्वा मानवो भक्त्या न दुर्गति मवाप्नुयात्॥ बृहस्पतिकृतं लिंगं ये पश्यंति नरोत्तमाः

taṁ dṛṣṭvā mānavo bhaktyā na durgati mavāpnuyāt|| bṛhaspatikṛtaṁ liṁgaṁ ye paśyaṁti narottamāḥ

A man who beholds him with devotion does not obtain a bad state hereafter. Those best of men who behold the linga made by Brihaspati—

Verse 6 (skanda.7.47.6)

बृहस्पतिकृता पीडा नैव तेषां हि जायते ॥ तत्र शुक्लचतुर्दश्यां गुरुवारे तथा प्रिये ॥

bṛhaspatikṛtā pīḍā naiva teṣāṁ hi jāyate || tatra śuklacaturdaśyāṁ guruvāre tathā priye ||

—for them the affliction caused by Brihaspati (Jupiter) never occurs. There, on the fourteenth of the bright fortnight and likewise on Thursday, O beloved—

Verse 7 (skanda.7.47.7)

संपूज्य विधिवल्लिंगं सम्यग्राजोपचारतः ॥ अथवा भक्तिभावेन प्राप्नुयात्परमं पदम्

saṁpūjya vidhivalliṁgaṁ samyagrājopacārataḥ || athavā bhaktibhāvena prāpnuyātparamaṁ padam

—having worshipped the linga according to rule, fully with royal offerings, or with devout feeling, one attains the supreme state.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.47.8)

स्नानं पलसहस्रेण पंचामृतरसेन यः ॥ करोति भक्त्या मर्त्यो वै मुच्यते स ऋणत्रयात्

snānaṁ palasahasreṇa paṁcāmṛtarasena yaḥ || karoti bhaktyā martyo vai mucyate sa ṛṇatrayāt

Whatever mortal, with devotion, performs the bathing of the linga with a thousand palas of the five-nectar mixture, is freed indeed from the three debts.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.47.9)

मातृकात्पैतृकाद्देवि तथा गुरुसमुद्भवात् ॥ सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा निर्द्वंद्वो मुक्तिमाप्नुयात्

mātṛkātpaitṛkāddevi tathā gurusamudbhavāt || sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā nirdvaṁdvo muktimāpnuyāt

—from the debt arising from the mother, the father, and likewise the teacher, O goddess. His soul purified of all sin, free from dualities, he attains liberation.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.47.10)

एवं संक्षेपतः प्रोक्तं माहात्म्यं गुरुदैवतम् ॥ शृणुयाद्यस्तु भावेन तस्य प्रीतो गुरुर्भवेत्

evaṁ saṁkṣepataḥ proktaṁ māhātmyaṁ gurudaivatam || śṛṇuyādyastu bhāvena tasya prīto gururbhavet

Thus has the greatness relating to the deity Guru (Jupiter) been told in brief; whoever hears it with devout feeling, Guru becomes pleased with him.
