The Glory of Budheshvara (Mercury)

Verse 1 (skanda.7.46.1)

॥ ईश्वर उवाच ॥ ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि तस्यैवोत्तरतः स्थितम् ॥ लिंगं महाप्रभावं तु बुधेश्वरमिति श्रुतम्

|| īśvara uvāca || tato gacchenmahādevi tasyaivottarataḥ sthitam || liṁgaṁ mahāprabhāvaṁ tu budheśvaramiti śrutam

Ishvara said: "Then one should go, O great goddess, to the linga situated to the north of that very Angareshvara, of great power, known as Budheshvara."

Verse 2 (skanda.7.46.2)

धनुषां द्वितये चैव नातिदूरे व्यवस्थितम् ॥ सर्वपाप हरं लिंगं दर्शनादेव भामिनि

dhanuṣāṁ dvitaye caiva nātidūre vyavasthitam || sarvapāpa haraṁ liṁgaṁ darśanādeva bhāmini

It is situated at a distance of just two bow-lengths, not far; that linga removes all sin, O fair one, merely by its sight.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.46.3)

बुधेन चैव देवेशि तत्र तप्तं महातपः ॥ स्थापितं विमलं लिंगं समाराध्य सदाशिवम्

budhena caiva deveśi tatra taptaṁ mahātapaḥ || sthāpitaṁ vimalaṁ liṁgaṁ samārādhya sadāśivam

There, O queen of gods, Budha (Mercury) performed great austerity, and, having propitiated Sadashiva, established this stainless linga.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.46.4)

वर्षायुतानि चत्वारि संपूज्य तु विधानतः ॥ अनन्यचेताः शांतात्मा प्रत्यक्षीकृतवान्भवम्

varṣāyutāni catvāri saṁpūjya tu vidhānataḥ || ananyacetāḥ śāṁtātmā pratyakṣīkṛtavānbhavam

Having worshipped for forty thousand years according to rule, with undivided mind, tranquil soul, he beheld Bhava (Shiva) directly.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.46.5)

ततस्तुष्टमना देवो ग्रहत्वं तस्य तद्ददौ ॥ तं संपूज्य विधानेन सोमपुत्रप्रतिष्ठितम्॥ सौम्याष्टम्यां विशेषेण राजसूयफलं लभेत्

tatastuṣṭamanā devo grahatvaṁ tasya taddadau || taṁ saṁpūjya vidhānena somaputrapratiṣṭhitam|| saumyāṣṭamyāṁ viśeṣeṇa rājasūyaphalaṁ labhet

Then the god, his mind well pleased, gave him the status of a planet. Whoever worships this linga, established by the Son of Soma (Moon), according to rule, especially on the eighth day of the bright fortnight (Saumya-ashtami), obtains the fruit of the Rajasuya sacrifice.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.46.6)

न दौर्भाग्यं कुले तस्य न चैवेष्टवियोजनम् ॥ शत्रुतो न भयं तस्य भवेत्तस्यप्रसादतः

na daurbhāgyaṁ kule tasya na caiveṣṭaviyojanam || śatruto na bhayaṁ tasya bhavettasyaprasādataḥ

In his family there is no misfortune, nor separation from loved ones; through his grace, there is no fear of enemies for him.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.46.7)

इति संक्षेपतः प्रोक्तं माहात्म्यं बुधदैवतम्॥ श्रुत्वाऽभिनंद्य प्रयतः प्राप्नोति परमं पदम्

iti saṁkṣepataḥ proktaṁ māhātmyaṁ budhadaivatam|| śrutvā'bhinaṁdya prayataḥ prāpnoti paramaṁ padam

Thus has the greatness relating to the deity Budha been told in brief; whoever hears it, rejoices in it, and is self-controlled, attains the supreme state.
