The Glory of Angareshvara (Mars)

Verse 1 (skanda.7.45.1)

॥ ईश्वर उवाच ॥ ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि अंगारेश्वरमुत्तमम् ॥ स्थापितं भूमिपुत्रेण सोमेशादीश गोचरे

|| īśvara uvāca || tato gacchenmahādevi aṁgāreśvaramuttamam || sthāpitaṁ bhūmiputreṇa someśādīśa gocare

Ishvara said: "Then one should go, O great goddess, to the excellent Angareshvara, established by the Son of the Earth, within the range of Ishana from Somesha."

Verse 2 (skanda.7.45.2)

त्रिपुरं दग्धुकामस्य पुरा मम वरानने ॥ क्रोधादश्रु विनिष्क्रांतं लोचनत्रितयेन तु

tripuraṁ dagdhukāmasya purā mama varānane || krodhādaśru viniṣkrāṁtaṁ locanatritayena tu

"O fair-faced one, formerly, when I desired to burn Tripura, out of anger a tear issued forth from my three eyes."

Verse 3 (skanda.7.45.3)

तच्च भूमौ निपतितं ततो भूभिसुतोऽभवत् ॥ स प्रभासं ततो गत्वा बाल्यात्प्रभृति शंकरम्

tacca bhūmau nipatitaṁ tato bhūbhisuto'bhavat || sa prabhāsaṁ tato gatvā bālyātprabhṛti śaṁkaram

That fell upon the earth, and from it was born the Son of the Earth (Bhauma, Mars). He then went to Prabhasa and, from childhood, worshipped Shankara—

Verse 4 (skanda.7.45.4)

तपसाऽऽराधयामास बहून्वर्षगणान्प्रिये ॥ तस्य तुष्टो महादेवः सुप्रीतात्मा वरं ददौ

tapasā''rādhayāmāsa bahūnvarṣagaṇānpriye || tasya tuṣṭo mahādevaḥ suprītātmā varaṁ dadau

"—with austerity for many years, O beloved." Pleased with him, Mahadeva, his soul well satisfied, gave him a boon.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.45.5)

सोऽब्रवीद्यदि मे देव तुष्टोसि वृषभध्वज ॥ ग्रहत्वं देहि सर्वेश न चान्यं वरमुत्सहे

so'bravīdyadi me deva tuṣṭosi vṛṣabhadhvaja || grahatvaṁ dehi sarveśa na cānyaṁ varamutsahe

He said: "If you are pleased with me, O god, O bull-bannered one, grant me the status of a planet, O lord of all; I desire no other boon."

Verse 6 (skanda.7.45.6)

स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय पुनस्तं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥ इहागत्य नरो यो मां पूजयिष्यति भक्तितः

sa tatheti pratijñāya punastaṁ vākyamabravīt || ihāgatya naro yo māṁ pūjayiṣyati bhaktitaḥ

He, saying "So be it," promised, and again spoke this word to him: "Whatever man comes here and worships me with devotion—"

Verse 7 (skanda.7.45.7)

न भविष्यति वै पीडा तावकी तस्य कुत्रचित् ॥ पुष्पाणि रक्तवर्णानि मध्वाज्याक्तानि भूरिशः

na bhaviṣyati vai pīḍā tāvakī tasya kutracit || puṣpāṇi raktavarṇāni madhvājyāktāni bhūriśaḥ

"—your affliction shall never come upon him anywhere. Whoever offers red-colored flowers, in abundance, soaked in honey and ghee—"

Verse 8 (skanda.7.45.8)

होमयिष्यति यो भक्त्या लक्षमेकं तदग्रतः ॥ पंचोपचारविधिना त्वां तु संपूज्य यत्नतः

homayiṣyati yo bhaktyā lakṣamekaṁ tadagrataḥ || paṁcopacāravidhinā tvāṁ tu saṁpūjya yatnataḥ

"—offers as oblation in fire before him, one lakh with devotion, and with effort worships you with the five-fold rite—"

Verse 9 (skanda.7.45.9)

तस्य जन्मावधिर्नैव तव पीडा भविष्यति ॥। तथा विद्रुमदानेन लप्स्यते फलमीप्सितम्

tasya janmāvadhirnaiva tava pīḍā bhaviṣyati ||| tathā vidrumadānena lapsyate phalamīpsitam

"—for him, until the end of his life, your affliction shall never occur; and likewise, by the gift of coral, he shall obtain his desired fruit."

Verse 10 (skanda.7.45.10)

एवमुक्त्वा स भगवानत्रैवांतरधीयन ॥ भौमोऽपि ग्रहमध्यस्थो विमानेन विराजते

evamuktvā sa bhagavānatraivāṁtaradhīyana || bhaumo'pi grahamadhyastho vimānena virājate

Having said this, that Lord vanished right there; and Bhauma too, established among the planets, shines forth in his celestial chariot.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.45.11)

एवं संक्षेपतः प्रोक्तं भौममाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्॥ श्रुतं हरति पापानि तथारोग्यं प्रयच्छति

evaṁ saṁkṣepataḥ proktaṁ bhaumamāhātmyamuttamam|| śrutaṁ harati pāpāni tathārogyaṁ prayacchati

Thus has the excellent greatness of Bhauma (Mars) been told in brief; when heard, it removes sins and likewise grants good health.
