Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 481
The Story of Dilipa: Destruction of the Adamantine Sin-Stain by the Mere Sight of a Dvaraka Pilgrim
Verse 1 (skanda.7.481.1)
śrīprahlāda uvāca | evamadbhutamāhātmyaṁ dvārakāyāṁ munīśvarāḥ | sarveṣāṁ kṣetratīrthānāṁ mahāpāpavidārakam || 1 ||
Shri Prahlada said: O lords of sages, thus this wondrous glory of Dvaraka is the destroyer of the great sins pertaining to all fields and sacred fords.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.481.2)
varṇānāmāśramāṇāṁ ca patitānāṁ viśeṣataḥ | mahāpāpaharaṁ proktaṁ mahāpuṇyavivardhanam || 2 ||
It is declared to remove the great sins of the varnas, the ashramas, and especially of the fallen, and to increase great merit.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.481.3)
atyugrapāparāśīnāṁ dāhasthānaṁ yathā smṛtam | dvārakāgamanaṁ viprāḥ kiṁ punardvārakāsthitiḥ || 3 ||
It is remembered as the place where the most terrible heaps of sin are consumed. O brahmins, this is merely from going to Dvaraka — what then of dwelling there!
Verse 4 (skanda.7.481.4)
viśeṣeṇa tu viprendrāḥ kanyārāśisthite gurau | brahmādayo'pi dṛśyaṁte yatra tīrthaiśca saṁyutāḥ || 4 ||
O foremost of brahmins, especially when Jupiter is in Virgo, even Brahma and the others are seen there, together with the sacred fords.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.481.5)
prativarṣaṁ prakurvaṁti dvārakāgamanaṁ narāḥ | teṣāṁ pādarajaḥ spṛṣṭvā divaṁ yāṁti ca pāpinaḥ || 5 ||
Men who journey to Dvaraka every year — even sinners, by touching the dust of their feet, go to heaven.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.481.6)
gomatī nīrapūtānāṁ kṛṣṇavaktrāvalokinām | darśanātpātakaṁ teṣāṁ yāti janmaśatārjitam || 6 ||
Of those purified by the waters of the Gomati and beholding the face of Krishna — by the mere sight of them, sin accumulated over a hundred births departs.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.481.7)
itihāsena pūrvoktaṁ śrūyatāṁ munipuṁgavāḥ | dilīpavasiṣṭha saṁvāde paramāścaryavardhanam || 7 ||
O foremost of sages, hear the ancient legend spoken of old, in the dialogue between Dilipa and Vasishtha, which increases the greatest wonder.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.481.8)
kāśyāṁ tu vajralepo hi kṣetra ekatra naśyati | yāturdarśanataḥ śrutvā dilīpo vākyamabravīt || 8 ||
The adamantine sin-stain incurred at Kashi is destroyed by the sight of a single field — hearing this account from the traveler, Dilipa spoke these words.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.481.9)
dilīpa uvāca | vajralepaśca kāśyāṁ tu ghoro yatra vinaśyati | kṛtsnaśo'tha mahāpuṇyaṁ prāpyaṁ yatra tadasti kim || 9 ||
Dilipa said: What is that place where the terrible adamantine sin-stain incurred at Kashi is utterly destroyed, and where great merit is to be obtained?
Verse 10 (skanda.7.481.10)
na prarohaṁti pāpāni yasminkṣetre dvijottama | tatkṣetraṁ kathyatāṁ puṇyaṁ yatra pāpaṁ praṇaśyati || 10 ||
O best of brahmins, tell me of that sacred field where sins do not sprout, where sin is utterly destroyed.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.481.11)
vasiṣṭha uvāca | āsītkāśyāṁ purā kaścittridaṇḍī mokṣadharmavit | japandaśāśvamedhe tu gāyatrīṁ ca samāhitaḥ || 11 ||
Vasishtha said: Once in Kashi there lived a triple-staffed ascetic, versed in the dharma of liberation, who, deeply absorbed, recited the Gayatri at Dashashvamedha ghat.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.481.12)
tatra kācitsamāyātā yuvatī gajagāminī | tīre saṁsthāpya vāsāṁsi gaṁgāyāḥ śramaśāṁtaye | praviṣṭā ca jale nagnā jalakrīḍāṁ cakāra ha || 12 ||
There came a certain young woman of elephantine gait, who, to relieve her weariness, left her garments on the bank of the Ganga, entered the water naked, and began to sport in it.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.481.13)
nagnāṁ tāṁ krīḍatīṁ vīkṣya yatirmadanapūritaḥ | daivāgnibhraṁśito mārgātsahasā ca vimohitaḥ || 13 ||
Beholding her sporting naked, the ascetic was filled with passion; by an unlucky turn of fate he fell from his path and was suddenly bewildered.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.481.14)
manasā kāmayāmāsa sā'pi taṁ taruṇaṁ yatim | tayośca saṁgatistatra saṁjātā pāpakarmaṇoḥ || 14 ||
She too, in her mind, desired that young ascetic. And there arose a union between the two, both guilty of sinful deeds.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.481.15)
tayā vimohitaḥ sadyastāmevānusasāra saḥ | tatprītyai cārjayāmāsa dhanamanyāyatastadā || 15 ||
Bewitched by her, he at once followed after her, and to please her he began to earn wealth by unjust means.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.481.16)
vārāṇasyāṁ hi na tyaktaścaṁḍālasya pratigrahaḥ | snānahīnaḥ sadā pāpī rātrau cauryeṇa varttate || 16 ||
In Varanasi he did not refuse even gifts from an outcaste. Neglecting his ablutions, ever sinful, he began to live by theft at night.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.481.17)
kasmiṁścitsamaye pāpī māṁsārthī tu vanaṁ gataḥ | dadarśa pramadāṁ tatra mātaṁgīṁ madirekṣaṇām || 17 ||
At one time that sinner went into the forest desiring meat, and there saw a woman of the outcaste tribe with intoxicating eyes.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.481.18)
tasyāḥ prathamataruṇyaṁ dṛṣṭvā garveṇa pāpmanā | vane'tha nirjane tatra mātaṁgīsaṁgameyivān || 18 ||
Beholding her first bloom of youth, with pride and sinfulness he, there in that lonely forest, united himself with the outcaste woman.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.481.19)
tayā sahānnapānādi kṛtavānpāpamohitaḥ | aśnāti surayā paṁkaṁ gomāṁsaṁ pāpalaṁpaṭaḥ || 19 ||
Deluded by sin, he took food and drink together with her. Addicted to sin, he began to eat forbidden filth and beef along with liquor.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.481.20)
tadgṛhe nidhanaṁ prāptaḥ pāpātmā sarvabhakṣakaḥ | vārāṇasīprabhāvena na prāpto narakaṁ tadā || 20 ||
That sinful soul, an eater of everything, met his death in her house. Yet by the power of Varanasi, he did not then attain hell.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.481.21)
kiṁ tu tatra kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ vajralepaṁ sudāruṇam | śūdrīsaṁparka pāpena jāto'sau krūrayoniṣu || 21 ||
But the sin he committed there became a most terrible adamantine stain. Through the sin of union with a low-born woman, he was born among cruel species.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.481.22)
vṛko vyāghrorgaḥ śvānaḥ śṛgālaḥ sūkaro'bhavat | duraṁtāṁ yātanāṁ prāptaḥ śamaleśaṁ na vindati || 22 ||
He became a wolf, a tiger, a serpent, a dog, a jackal, and a boar. Though he suffered endless torment, not the slightest trace of his defilement diminished.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.481.23)
evaṁ janmasahasraistu na tasya pāpakarmaṇaḥ | mātaṁgyā saṁgajaṁ pāpaṁ vyanaśyata yugāyutaiḥ || 23 ||
Thus, through a thousand births of that sinful doer, the sin born of union with the outcaste woman did not perish even over ten thousand ages.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.481.24)
tato'sau saptame jātaḥ śaśakaścaiva janmani | tato'sau rākṣaso jātaḥ pāpātmā sarvabhakṣakaḥ || 24 ||
Then, in his seventh birth, he became a hare. Thereafter, that sinful soul was born as an all-devouring demon.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.481.25)
prāṇino bhakṣayansarvānsaṁprāpto viṁdhyaparvate | asmādanaṁtaraṁ bhāvyaṁ kṛkalāsatvamadbhutam || 25 ||
Devouring all living creatures, he reached the Vindhya mountain. After this, a wondrous lizard-birth awaited him.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.481.26)
śūdrīsaṁgajapāpena bhāvyaṁ ca kṛmiyoninā | mātaṁgīsaṁgame proktaṁ phalaṁ hyatijugupsitam || 26 ||
Through the sin born of union with the low-born woman, a worm-birth too awaited him — such is declared to be the utterly detestable fruit of union with an outcaste woman.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.481.27)
yugāyutaṁ sahasraistu bhokṣyamāṇaṁ sudāruṇam | atyāścaryamabhūttatra dilīpa śrūyatāṁ mahat || 27 ||
For ten thousand ages, through a thousand births, he was to endure this most terrible fruit. O Dilipa, then a great wonder occurred there — listen.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.481.28)
ālokitaṁ ca viṁdhyādrau sarveṣāṁ vismayāspadam | dṛṣṭvā dvārāvatīṁ kaścitkṛṣṇavaktraṁ suśobhanam || 28 ||
On the Vindhya mountain there appeared a thing to astonish all — a certain man had beheld the glorious Dvaravati and the beautiful face of Krishna.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.481.29)
gomatīnīrapūtastu viṁdhyaṁ prāptaḥ sa pāṁthikaḥ | mātrāṁ kṛṣṇaprasādasya skandhe kṛtvā praharṣitaḥ || 29 ||
That traveler, purified by the waters of the Gomati, arrived at the Vindhya mountain, greatly delighted, carrying upon his shoulder a portion of Krishna's grace-offering.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.481.30)
prayāsyansvagṛhaṁ tatra dadarśa pathi rākṣasam | drutaṁ ca krūrakarmāṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhakṣitumāgatam || 30 ||
As he was journeying toward his home, he saw on the path a demon, of cruel deeds, who was seen rushing swiftly to devour him.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.481.31)
tasya darśanamātreṇa vajralepaḥ sudāruṇaḥ | vārāṇasīsamudbhūto bhasmasādabhavatkṣaṇāt || 31 ||
By the mere sight of him, that most terrible adamantine stain incurred at Varanasi was reduced to ashes in an instant.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.481.32)
janmakoṭiśatenāpi yo na śakyo vyapohitum | tatpāpaparvatānmuktaḥ kṛṣṇapāṁthikadarśanāt || 32 ||
That which could not be removed even in a hundred crore births — from that mountain of sin he was freed by the mere sight of Krishna's traveler.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.481.33)
dagdhe'tha krūrabhāve tu ghanamukto yathā śaśī | reje puṇyaprakāśena kṛṣṇapāṁthikadarśanāt || 33 ||
When his cruel nature was consumed, like the moon freed from clouds, he too shone forth with the sacred radiance born of the sight of Krishna's traveler.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.481.34)
tato'bhimukhamabhyetya dvārakāpathikaṁ mudā | nanāma śraddhayā bhūmau taddarśanamahotsavaḥ || 34 ||
Then he approached the traveler of Dvaraka with joy and bowed to the ground with reverence — it was a great festival of beholding him.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.481.35)
natvā'tha vismitaḥ prāha aho'dya tava darśanāt | gato ghoratamo bhāvaḥ prāptā saṁsiddhiruttamā || 35 ||
Having bowed, astonished, he said: "Ah, today by your sight my most dreadful state has departed, and I have attained supreme accomplishment.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.481.36)
kasmāttvamāgato bhadra prabhāvaḥ kīdṛśastava | vajralepastu kāśyāṁ vai dagdhaste darśanādanu || 36 ||
From where have you come, O gracious one? What is your power? For the adamantine stain incurred at Kashi was consumed right after your sight."
Verse 37 (skanda.7.481.37)
vasiṣṭha uvāca | ityevaṁ rākṣasenoktaṁ śrutvā kṛṣṇasya pāṁthikaḥ | vismayaṁ paramāpannaḥ prāha taṁ harṣamānasaḥ || 37 ||
Vasishtha said: Hearing this spoken by the demon, Krishna's traveler was struck with supreme wonder and, with a joyful heart, spoke to him.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.481.38)
pāṁthika uvāca | śrīmaddvāravatīṁ dṛṣṭvā hyāgato'smyatra rākṣasa | vajralepaharo'smākaṁ prabhāvaḥ kṛṣṇadarśanāt || 38 ||
The traveler said: O demon, I have come here after beholding the glorious Dvaravati. This power of ours to destroy the adamantine stain comes only from the sight of Krishna.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.481.39)
gomatyāṁ yaḥ sakṛtsnātvā paśyetkṛṣṇamukhāṁbujam | sarvānuddharate pāpādapi trailokyadāhakāt || 39 ||
Whoever, having bathed even once in the Gomati, beholds the lotus face of Krishna, is delivered entirely even from sin capable of scorching the three worlds.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.481.40)
vasiṣṭha uvāca | ityukto rākṣaso hṛṣṭaḥ śuddhātmā bhaktisaṁyutaḥ | natvā pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā saṁprāpto dvārakāṁ tadā || 40 ||
Vasishtha said: Thus addressed, the demon, delighted, with a purified soul and filled with devotion, having bowed and circumambulated, then reached Dvaraka.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.481.41)
gomatyāṁ sa tanuṁ tyaktvā prāpto'sau vaiṣṇavaṁ padam | stūyamānaḥ sureśānairgaṁdharvaiḥ puṣpavṛṣṭibhiḥ || 41 ||
Casting off his body in the Gomati, he attained the abode of Vishnu, being praised by the lords of the gods and the gandharvas, and honored with a shower of flowers.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.481.42)
itthaṁ mahāprabhāvo hi dvārakāyāḥ prakīrttitaḥ | na prarohaṁti pāpāni yasyāḥ pāṁthikadarśanāt | dvārakāyāṁ tu kiṁ vācyaṁ na prarohaṁti pātakam || 42 ||
Thus is proclaimed the great power of Dvaraka — by the mere sight of whose traveler sins do not sprout; what then need be said of Dvaraka itself, where sins do not sprout at all!
Verse 43 (skanda.7.481.43)
ityetatkathitaṁ rājanyatpṛṣṭo'haṁ tvayā'nagha | sarvakṣetrottamaṁ kṣetraṁ vajralepavināśanam || 43 ||
O sinless king, thus has been told all that you asked of me — that field, supreme among all fields, which destroys the adamantine stain, is Dvaraka.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.481.44)
śrīprahlāda uvāca | vasiṣṭhenoditaṁ śrutvā dilīpo hṛṣṭamānasaḥ | dvārakāṁ kṣetrarājaṁ taṁ jñātvā ca vismayaṁ yayau || 44 ||
Shri Prahlada said: Hearing this account spoken by Vasishtha, Dilipa, his heart delighted, and knowing Dvaraka to be that king of fields, was filled with wonder.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.481.45)
yayau dvāravatīṁ hṛṣṭo devadevasya sādaram | kṛṣṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā parāṁ siddhiṁ saṁprāpto devamaṁdire || 45 ||
Rejoicing, he went with reverence to Dvaravati, the city of the God of gods, and, beholding Krishna, attained supreme accomplishment in that divine temple.
