Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 482
The Glory of the Name of Dvaraka
Verse 1 (skanda.7.482.1)
prahlāda uvāca | aho kṣetrasya māhātmyaṁ samaṁtāddaśayojanam | diviṣṭhā yatra paśyaṁti sarvāneva caturbhujān || 1 ||
Prahlada said: Ah, the glory of this field — extending ten yojanas all around, where even the dwellers of heaven behold everyone in a four-armed form.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.482.2)
aho kṣetrasya māhātmyaṁ dṛṣṭvā nityaṁ caturbhujān | dvārakāvāsinaḥ sarvānnamasyaṁti divaukasaḥ || 2 ||
Ah, the glory of this field — the dwellers of heaven, ever beholding all the residents of Dvaraka in their four-armed form, bow down to them.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.482.3)
aho kṣetrasya māhātmyaṁ sarvaśāstreṣu viśrutam | aho kṣetrasya māhātmyaṁ śṛṇvaṁtu ṛṣayo'malāḥ || 3 ||
Ah, the glory of this field is renowned in all the scriptures. Ah, let the pure sages hear the glory of this field.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.482.4)
muktiṁ necchaṁti yatrasthāḥ kṛṣṇasevotsukāḥ sadā | yatratyāścaiva pāṣāṇā yatra kvāpi vimuktidāḥ || 4 ||
Those who dwell here, ever eager for the service of Krishna, do not even desire liberation. Even the stones here, wherever they may be, grant liberation.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.482.5)
api kīṭa pataṁgādyāḥ paśavo'tha sarīsṛpāḥ | vimuktāḥ pāpinaḥ sarve dvārakāyāḥ prasādataḥ | kiṁ punarmānavā nityaṁ dvārakāyāṁ vasaṁti ye || 5 ||
Even insects, moths, beasts, and reptiles — all sinners — are liberated by the grace of Dvaraka. What then need be said of men who dwell perpetually in Dvaraka!
Verse 6 (skanda.7.482.6)
yā gatiḥ sarvajaṁtūnāṁ dvārakāpuravāsinām | sā gatirdurlabhā nūnaṁ munīnāmūrdhvaretasām || 6 ||
The destiny that all creatures dwelling in the city of Dvaraka attain is indeed rare even for sages of perfect continence.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.482.7)
sarveṣu kṣetratīrtheṣu vasatāṁ varṣakoṭibhiḥ | tatphalaṁ nimiṣārddhena dvārakāyāṁ dinedine || 7 ||
The fruit obtained by dwelling in all the fields and sacred fords for crores of years is obtained in Dvaraka every single day in but half a moment.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.482.8)
dvārakāyāṁ sthitāḥ sarve narā nāryaścaturbhujāḥ | dvārakāvāsinaḥ sarvānyaḥ paśyetkaluṣāpahān | satyaṁsatyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ kṛṣṇasyātipriyo bhavet || 8 ||
All the men and women dwelling in Dvaraka are four-armed. Whoever beholds all the residents of Dvaraka, who remove impurity — O best of brahmins, truly, truly, he becomes exceedingly dear to Krishna.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.482.9)
dvārakāvāsino ye vai niṁdaṁti puruṣādhamāḥ | kṛṣṇasnehavihīnāste pataṁti duḥkhasāgare || 9 ||
Those base men who slander the residents of Dvaraka, bereft of Krishna's affection, fall into an ocean of misery.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.482.10)
jayaṁtena bhṛśaṁ trastāḥ śūlāgrāropitāściram | karṣitāstāḍitāste vai mūrcchitāḥ punarutthitāḥ || 10 ||
Greatly terrified by Jayanta, they are impaled for a long time on the point of a spear, dragged, beaten, and, having swooned, rise up again.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.482.11)
trāhitrāhi jayaṁta tvaṁ vadaṁto hi bhayāturāḥ | smaraṁtaḥ pūrvapāpaṁ te jayaṁtena pratāḍitāḥ || 11 ||
Crying out in terror, "Save me, save me, O Jayanta!", they, recalling their former sin, are struck by Jayanta.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.482.12)
jayaṁta uvāca | kiṁ kṛtaṁ maṁdabhāgyairvo yatpāpaṁ ca sudāruṇam | sarvaṁ puṇyaphalaṁ labdhvā dvārakāvāsamuttamam || 12 ||
Jayanta said: What terrible sin have you committed, O ill-fated ones, that, having obtained all the fruit of merit — the excellent dwelling in Dvaraka — you still did this?
Verse 13 (skanda.7.482.13)
dvārakāvāsināṁ niṁdā mahāpāpādhikā dhruvam | na nivarteta tatpāpaṁ sā jñeyā parameśvarī || 13 ||
Slandering the residents of Dvaraka is certainly worse than the gravest sin. That sin does not depart — know this to be the decree of the Supreme Goddess.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.482.14)
ataḥ kṛṣṇājñayā sarvānpāpino daṇḍayāmyaham | vaiṣṇavānāṁ ca niṁdāyāḥ phalaṁ bhuktvā sudāruṇam || 14 ||
Therefore, by Krishna's command, I punish all these sinners, that they may experience the most dreadful fruit of slandering the Vaishnavas.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.482.15)
tatastu dvārakāyāṁ ca puṇyaṁ janma bhaviṣyati | kṛṣṇaṁ pratoṣya saṁsiddhirbhaviṣyati sudurllabhā || 15 ||
Thereafter they shall obtain a meritorious birth in Dvaraka itself, and, having gratified Krishna, they shall attain a most rare accomplishment.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.482.16)
tasmāttadbhujyatāṁ pāpaṁ jātaṁ vaiṣṇavaniṁdanāt | tatratyānāṁ prabhurnaiva yama īṣṭe maheśvaraḥ || 16 ||
Therefore let that sin born of slandering the Vaishnavas be duly experienced. Even great Yama, the lord, has no authority over the dwellers there.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.482.17)
śrīprahlāda uvāca | tasmāddvāravatīṁ gatvā saṁsevyo devanāyakaḥ || 17 ||
Shri Prahlada said: Therefore, going to Dvaravati, the lord of the gods should be devotedly served.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.482.18)
gomatītīramāśritya dvārakāyāṁ prayacchati | yattu kiṁciddhanaṁ viprāḥ śrūyatāṁ tatphalodayam || 18 ||
Whoever, resorting to the bank of the Gomati, gives even a little wealth in Dvaraka — O brahmins, hear the rising of its fruit.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.482.19)
hemabhārasahasraistu ravivāre ravigrahe | kurukṣetre yadāpnoti gajāśvarathadānataḥ || 19 ||
The fruit obtained at Kurukshetra on a Sunday during a solar eclipse from the gift of thousands of loads of gold, elephants, horses and chariots,
Verse 20 (skanda.7.482.20)
sahasraguṇitaṁ tasmātsatyaṁsatyaṁ mayoditam | hemamāṣārddhamānena dvārakādānayogataḥ || 20 ||
Truly, truly, I declare that a thousand times greater fruit is obtained from giving in Dvaraka even half a masha's weight of gold.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.482.21)
patrāṇāṁ caiva puṣpāṇāṁ naivedyasikthasaṁkhyayā | kṛṣṇadevasya pūjāyāmanaṁtaṁ bhavati dvijāḥ || 21 ||
O brahmins, according to the number of leaves, flowers and grains of food-offering, infinite fruit arises in the worship of Lord Krishna.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.482.22)
annadānaṁ tu yaḥ kuryāddvārakāyāṁ tu tatphalam | naiva śaknomyahaṁ vaktuṁ brahmā śeṣamaheśvarau || 22 ||
Whoever performs the gift of food in Dvaraka — its fruit I am unable to describe, nor can Brahma, Shesha, or Maheshvara describe it either.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.482.23)
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdro vā'pyatha vā'ntyajaḥ | nārī vā dvārakāyāṁ vai bhaktyā vāsaṁ karoti vai || 23 ||
A brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya, shudra, or an outcaste, or a woman — whoever dwells in Dvaraka with devotion,
Verse 24 (skanda.7.482.24)
kulakoṭiṁ samuddhṛtya viṣṇuloke mahīyate | satyaṁsatyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭhā nānṛtaṁ mama bhāṣitam || 24 ||
He delivers a crore of his lineage and is honored in the world of Vishnu. O best of brahmins, truly, truly, my words are not false.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.482.25)
dvārakāvāsinaṁ dṛṣṭvā spṛṣṭvā caiva viśeṣataḥ | mahāpāpavinirmuktāḥ svargaloke vasaṁti te || 25 ||
Beholding a resident of Dvaraka, and especially touching him, they, freed from great sin, dwell in the heavenly world.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.482.26)
pāṁsuvo dvārakāyā vai vāyunā samudīritāḥ | pāpināṁ muktidāḥ proktāḥ kiṁ punardvārakā bhuvi || 26 ||
Even the dust of Dvaraka, when carried by the wind, is declared to grant liberation to sinners. What then need be said of the very soil of Dvaraka!
Verse 27 (skanda.7.482.27)
śrīprahlāda uvāca | śrūyatāṁ dvijaśārdūlā mahāmohavināśanam | dvārakāyāśca māhātmyaṁ gomatīkṛṣṇasannidhau || 27 ||
Shri Prahlada said: O tigers among brahmins, hear the glory of Dvaraka, dwelling in the presence of the Gomati and Krishna, which destroys great delusion.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.482.28)
kuśāvarttātsamārabhya yāvadvai sāgarāvadhi | yasyāṁ tithau samāyāti siṁhe devapurohitaḥ || 28 ||
Beginning from Kushavarta up to the ocean — on the day when the preceptor of the gods, Jupiter, enters Leo,
Verse 29 (skanda.7.482.29)
tasyāṁ hi gomatīsnānaṁ dviṣaṅgodāvarīphalam | avagāhitā prayatnena siṁhāṁte gautamī sakṛt || 29 ||
On that day, bathing in the Gomati yields twice the fruit of the Godavari. Immersing oneself once in the Gautami with effort at the end of Leo yields the same fruit.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.482.30)
godāvaryāṁ bhavetpuṇyaṁ vasato varṣasaṁkhyayā | tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti gomatīsevanāddvijāḥ || 30 ||
O brahmins, the merit that comes from dwelling by the Godavari for years, that fruit is obtained from serving the Gomati alone.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.482.31)
gomatyāṁ śraddhayā snānaṁ pūrṇe siṁhasthite gurau | sahasraguṇitaṁ tatsyāddvāravatyāṁ dinedine || 31 ||
When Jupiter is fully situated in Leo, the fruit of bathing in the Gomati with devotion becomes a thousandfold every single day in Dvaravati.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.482.32)
gacchagaccha mahābhāga dvārakāmiti yo vadet | tasyāvalokanādeva mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ || 32 ||
Whoever says "Go, go, O most fortunate one, go to Dvaraka" — by the mere sight of him a man is freed from all sins.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.482.33)
dvāraketi ca yo brūyāddvārakābhimukho naraḥ | kṛpayā kṛṣṇadevasya muktibhāgī bhaveddhruvam || 33 ||
Whoever, facing toward Dvaraka, utters the word "Dvaraka," by the grace of Lord Krishna certainly becomes a sharer of liberation.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.482.34)
dvārakāṁ gomatīṁ puṇyāṁ rukmiṇīṁ kṛṣṇameva ca | smaraṁti ye'nvahaṁ bhaktyā dvārakāphalabhāginaḥ || 34 ||
Those who daily remember with devotion Dvaraka, the sacred Gomati, Rukmini, and Krishna, become sharers of the fruit of Dvaraka.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.482.35)
sahasrayojanasthānāṁ yeṣāṁ syāditi mānasam | dvāravatyāṁ gamiṣyāmo drakṣyāmo dvārakeśvaram || 35 ||
Those who, even while dwelling a thousand yojanas away, resolve in their mind, "We shall go to Dvaravati, we shall behold the Lord of Dvaraka,"
Verse 36 (skanda.7.482.36)
sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyaṁte dhanyāste lokapāvanāḥ | kiṁ vācyaṁ dvārakāyātrāṁ ye prakurvaṁti mānavāḥ | kiṁ punardvārakānāthaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ paśyaṁti ye narāḥ || 36 ||
They are freed from all sins; they are blessed, purifiers of the world. What need be said of those who undertake the pilgrimage to Dvaraka! What then of those who behold Krishna, the Lord of Dvaraka!
Verse 37 (skanda.7.482.37)
mitradhrugbrahmahā goghnaḥ paradārāpahārakaḥ | mātṛhā pitṛhā caiva brahmasvāpaharastathā || 37 ||
One who betrays a friend, a slayer of a brahmin, a killer of a cow, an abductor of another's wife, a slayer of his mother, a slayer of his father, and one who seizes a brahmin's property,
Verse 38 (skanda.7.482.38)
ete cānye ca pāpiṣṭhā mahāpāpayutāśca ye | sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyaṁte kṛṣṇadevasya darśanāt || 38 ||
These and other most sinful persons burdened with grave sins — all of them are freed from every sin by the mere sight of Lord Krishna.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.482.39)
kiṁ vedaiḥ śraddhayā hīnairvyākhyānairapi kṛtsnaśaḥ | hemabhārasahasraiḥ kiṁ kurukṣetre ravigrahe || 39 ||
What is the use of the Vedas and all their commentaries, void of faith? What is the use of thousands of loads of gold given at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse?
Verse 40 (skanda.7.482.40)
gajāśvarathadānaiḥ kiṁ kiṁ maṁdirapratiṣṭhayā | teṣāṁ pūjādinā samyagiṣṭā pūrtādibhiśca kim || 40 ||
What is the use of gifts of elephants, horses, and chariots? What is the use of consecrating temples? What is the use of duly worshipping them, and of charitable works and the like?
Verse 41 (skanda.7.482.41)
rājasūyāśvamedhādyaiḥ sarvayajñaiśca kiṁ bhavet | sevanaiḥ kṣetratīrthānāṁ tapobhirvividhaistu kim || 41 ||
What use are the Rajasuya, Ashvamedha and all the other sacrifices? What use is the service of fields and sacred fords, and the various austerities?
Verse 42 (skanda.7.482.42)
kiṁ mokṣasādhanaiḥ kleśairdhyānayogasamādhibhiḥ | dvārakeśvarakṛṣṇasya darśanaṁ yasya jāyate || 42 ||
What use are the means of liberation, their attendant hardships, meditation, yoga and trance, for one who obtains the sight of Krishna, the Lord of Dvaraka?
Verse 43 (skanda.7.482.43)
māhātmyaṁ dvārakāyāstu athavā yaḥ śṛṇoti ca | viśeṣeṇa tu vaiśākhyāṁ jayaṁtyāścaiva jāgare || 43 ||
Or he who hears the glory of Dvaraka, especially in the month of Vaishakha, during the vigil of Jayanti,
Verse 44 (skanda.7.482.44)
māghyāṁ ca phālgune caitre jyeṣṭhe caiva viśeṣataḥ | adyāpi dvārakā puṇyā kalāvapi viśeṣataḥ || 44 ||
And in Magha, Phalguna, Chaitra, and especially in Jyeshtha — even today, even in the Kali age, Dvaraka remains especially sacred.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.482.45)
yasyāṁ satraṁ prapāṁ kṛtvā prāsādaṁ maṁcameva ca | yatīnāṁ śaraṇaṁ kṛtvā tīre maṁḍapameva ca || 45 ||
In which one who has built a charitable feeding-house, a water-shed, a mansion and a platform, a shelter for ascetics, and a pavilion on the bank,
Verse 46 (skanda.7.482.46)
vāpīkūpataḍāgānāṁ jīrṇoddhāramathāpi vā | mūrtiṁ viṣṇoḥ pratiṣṭhāpya dattvā vā bhogasādhanam || 46 ||
Or who has restored dilapidated step-wells, wells and tanks, or installed an image of Vishnu, or offered the means of divine enjoyment,
Verse 47 (skanda.7.482.47)
śrūyatāṁ tatphalaṁ viprāḥ sarvotkṛṣṭaṁ vadāmyaham | saṁprāpya vāṁchitānkāmānkṛṣṇānugrahabhājanam || 47 ||
O brahmins, hear its fruit, which I declare to be the very best — he obtains all his desired wishes and becomes a vessel of Krishna's grace.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.482.48)
tejomayeṣu lokeṣu bhuktvā bhogānanukramāt | prāpnoti viṣṇulokaṁ vai naro devanamaskṛtam || 48 ||
Having enjoyed pleasures in succession in worlds of light, that man attains the world of Vishnu, honored by the salutations of the gods.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.482.49)
sthāpayeddvārakāyāṁ vai mūrtiṁ dāruśilāmayīm | trailokyaṁ sthāpitaṁ tena viṣṇoḥ sāyujyatāmiyāt || 49 ||
Whoever installs in Dvaraka an image of Vishnu made of wood or stone — by him, as it were, the three worlds themselves are established, and he attains union with Vishnu.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.482.50)
praroho nāsti pāpasya puṇyasya vṛddhiruttamā | dvārakāyāṁ kathaṁ jātaṁ vailakṣaṇyamidaṁ prabho | kṣetrebhyaḥ sarvatīrthebhya āścaryaṁ kathayaṁti te || 50 ||
Here sin does not sprout, and merit increases supremely. O Lord, how has this uniqueness arisen in Dvaraka? They themselves declare this wonder, surpassing all fields and sacred fords.
