Chapter 483All chaptersChapter 485

Verse 1 (skanda.7.484.1)

śrīprahlāda uvāca | kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇeti śvapaco jāgaranniśi | japedapi kalau nityaṁ kṛṣṇarūpī bhaveddhi saḥ || 1 ||

Shri Prahlada said: If even an outcaste, keeping vigil at night, chants "Krishna, Krishna, Krishna" daily in the Kali age, he indeed becomes of the very form of Krishna.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.484.2)

kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇeti kalau vadatyaharniśam | nityaṁ yajñāyutaṁ puṇyaṁ tīrthakoṭisamudbhavam || 2 ||

He who says "Krishna, Krishna, Krishna" day and night in the Kali age obtains daily the merit of ten thousand sacrifices and the merit born of a crore sacred fords.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.484.3)

saṁpūrṇaikādaśī bhūtvā dvādaśyāṁ varddhate yadi | unmīlinīti vikhyātā tithīnāmuttamā tithiḥ || 3 ||

If a full Ekadashi extends further into the Dvadashi, it is renowned as "Unmilini" — declared to be the best among the tithis.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.484.4)

vaṁjulīvāsare ye vai rātrau kurvaṁti jāgaram | yajñāyutāyutaṁ puṇyaṁ muhūrtārddhena jāyate || 4 ||

Those who keep vigil at night on the day of Vanjuli obtain, in but half a muhurta, the merit of ten thousand times ten thousand sacrifices.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.484.5)

saṁpūrṇā dvādaśī bhūtvā varddhate cāpare dine | trayodaśyāṁ muniśreṣṭhā vaṁjulī durllabhā kalau || 5 ||

O foremost of sages, when a full Dvadashi extends further into the following Trayodashi day, that Vanjuli tithi is rare in the Kali age.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.484.6)

unmīlinīmanuprāpya ye prakurvaṁti jāgaram | nimiṣārddhena tatpuṇyaṁ gavāṁ koṭiphalapradam || 6 ||

Those who, obtaining the Unmilini tithi, keep vigil, obtain in but half a moment merit equal in fruit to the gift of a crore cows.

saṁpūrṇaikādaśī bhūtvā pratyahaṁ varddhate yadi | darśaśca paurṇamāsī ca pakṣavṛddhistathocyate || 7 ||

If a full Ekadashi keeps extending day by day, and the new-moon and full-moon days likewise extend, this is termed "pakshavriddhi" (fortnight-extension).

Verse 8 (skanda.7.484.8)

pakṣavṛddhikarīṁ prāpya ye prakurvaṁti jāgaram | nimiṣārddhārddhamātreṇa gavāṁ koṭiphalapradam || 8 ||

Those who, obtaining the fortnight-extending tithi, keep vigil, obtain, in but a quarter of a moment, merit equal in fruit to the gift of a crore cows.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.484.9)

śrīprahlāda uvāca | cakratīrthe naraḥ snātvā mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ | sa yāti paramaṁ sthānaṁ dāhapralayavarjitam || 9 ||

Shri Prahlada said: Bathing in Chakra-tirtha, a man is freed from all sins, and he attains the supreme abode, free from burning and dissolution.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.484.10)

cakraṁ prakṣālitaṁ yatra kṛṣṇena svayameva hi | tena vai cakratīrthaṁ hi puṇyaṁ ca paramaṁ hareḥ | bhavaṁti tatra pāṣāṇāścakrāṁkā muktidāyakāḥ || 10 ||

Where Krishna Himself washed His discus — for that reason that Chakra-tirtha is Hari's supreme sacred place. There the stones, marked with the discus, become granters of liberation.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.484.11)

tatraiva yadi labhyaṁte cakrairdvādaśabhiḥ saha | dvādaśātmā sa vijñeyo mokṣadaḥ parikīrtitaḥ || 11 ||

If there, indeed, a stone is found together with twelve discus-marks, it should be known as "Dvadashatma" (twelve-fold self), declared to bestow liberation.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.484.12)

ekacakreṇa pāṣāṇo dvāravatyāṁ suśobhanaḥ | sudarśanābhidheyo'sau mokṣaikaphaladāyakaḥ || 12 ||

In Dvaravati, a beautiful stone bearing a single discus-mark is known by the name "Sudarshana," bestowing the sole fruit of liberation.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.484.13)

lakṣmīnārāyaṇau dvau tau bhuktimuktiphalapradau | tribhiścaivācyutaṁ devaṁ sadendrapadadāyakam || 13 ||

A stone with two discus-marks is Lakshmi-Narayana, bestowing both enjoyment and liberation. One with three is the god Achyuta, granting the position of Indra along with it.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.484.14)

bhūtido vighnahaṁtā ca catuścakro janārddanaḥ | pañcabhirvāsudevastu janmamṛtyubhayāpahaḥ || 14 ||

One with four discus-marks is Janardana, the bestower of prosperity and the destroyer of obstacles. One with five is Vasudeva, who removes the fear of birth and death.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.484.15)

pradyumnaḥ ṣaḍbhirevāsau lakṣmīṁ kāṁtiṁ dadāti ca | saptabhirbaladevastu gotrakīrtivivarddhanaḥ || 15 ||

One with six discus-marks is Pradyumna, who grants prosperity and beauty. One with seven is Baladeva, who increases the fame of one's lineage.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.484.16)

vāṁchitaṁ cāṣṭabhirbhaktyā dadāti puruṣottamaḥ | sarvaṁ dadyānnavavyūho durllabho yaḥ surottamaiḥ || 16 ||

One with eight discus-marks is Purushottama, who grants the desired wish through devotion. The nine-fold form, rare even for the greatest gods, bestows everything.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.484.17)

rājyaprado daśabhistu daśāvatāra eva ca | ekādaśabhiraiśvaryamaniruddhaḥ prayacchati || 17 ||

One with ten discus-marks is the form of the ten avataras, bestowing sovereignty. One with eleven is Aniruddha, who grants lordship.

Verse 18 (skanda.7.484.18)

nirvāṇaṁ dvādaśātmā tu cakrairdvādaśabhiḥ smṛtam | ata ūrdhvamanaṁto'sau saukhyamokṣapradāyakaḥ || 18 ||

The twelve-marked "Dvadashatma" form is remembered as granting Nirvana. Beyond this, that form is Ananta, the bestower of both happiness and liberation.

Verse 19 (skanda.7.484.19)

ye kecittatra pāṣāṇāḥ kṛṣṇacakreṇa mudritāḥ | teṣāṁ sparśanamātreṇa mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ || 19 ||

Whatever stones there are marked with Krishna's discus — by the mere touch of them a man is freed from all sins.

Verse 20 (skanda.7.484.20)

brahmahatyādikaṁ pāpaṁ manovākkāyakarmajam | tatsarvaṁ vilayaṁ yāti cakrāṁkitaprapūjanāt || 20 ||

Sins such as the killing of a brahmin, and those born of deeds of mind, speech and body — all of these dissolve through the worship of the discus-marked stone.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.484.21)

mlecchadeśe śubhe vā'pi cakrāṁko yatra tiṣṭhati | yojanāni daśa dve ca mama kṣetraṁ ca sundari || 21 ||

Whether in a barbarian land or in an auspicious one, wherever the discus-mark is present, O beauty, my field extends there for twelve yojanas.

Verse 22 (skanda.7.484.22)

mṛtyukāle ca saṁprāpte hṛdaye yastu dhārayet | cakrākaṁ pāpadalanaṁ sa yāti paramāṁ gatim || 22 ||

When the time of death arrives, whoever bears upon his heart the discus-shaped mark that destroys sin attains the supreme goal.

Verse 23 (skanda.7.484.23)

gomatīsaṁgame snātvā bhṛgutīrthe tathaiva ca | na māturvasate kukṣau yadyapi syātsa pātakī || 23 ||

Having bathed at the confluence of the Gomati and likewise at Bhrigu-tirtha, even though he may be a great sinner, he does not again dwell in a mother's womb.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.484.24)

tāmasaṁ rājasaṁ vāpi yatkṛtaṁ viṣṇupūjanam | tatsāttvikatvamabhyeti nimnagāṁbho yathārṇave || 24 ||

Even the worship of Vishnu performed in a mode of ignorance or passion attains a state of purity there, just as the water flowing downward merges into the ocean.
