The Glory of the Vigil at Chakra-tirtha on the Bank of the Gomati

Chapter 484All chaptersChapter 486

Verse 1 (skanda.7.485.1)

śrīprahlāda uvāca | dvārakāyāśca māhātmyaṁ śṛṇu pautra mayoditam | śṛṇvato gadataścāpi muktiḥ kṛṣṇādbhaveddhruvam || 1 ||

Shri Prahlada said: O grandson, hear the glory of Dvaraka as spoken by me. Both the hearer and the speaker certainly attain liberation from Krishna.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.485.2)

putreṇa lokāñjayati pautreṇānantyamaśnute | atha putrasya pautreṇa nākamevādhirohati || 2 ||

Through a son, a man conquers the worlds; through a grandson, he attains endlessness; and through his son's grandson, he ascends to heaven itself.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.485.3)

yasya putraḥ śucirdakṣaḥ pūrve vayasi dhārmikaḥ | viṣṇubhaktiṁ ca kurute taṁ putraṁ kavayo viduḥ || 3 ||

He whose son is pure, capable, righteous from early age, and devoted to Vishnu — that son the wise know as a true son.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.485.4)

hemaśṛṅgaṁ raupyakhuraṁ savatsaṁ kāṁsyadoham | savastraṁ kapilānāṁ tu sahasraṁ ca dinedine || 4 ||

With horns of gold, hooves of silver, together with a calf, a bronze milking-vessel, and cloth-covering — a thousand tawny cows, given daily,

Verse 5 (skanda.7.485.5)

dattvā yatphalamāpnoti brāhmaṇe vedapārage | tatphalaṁ snānamātreṇa gomatyāṁ madhubhiddine || 5 ||

The fruit obtained by giving these to a brahmin versed in the Vedas is obtained by mere bathing in the Gomati on the day of Madhusudana's Dvadashi.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.485.6)

yastvekaṁ bhojayedvipraṁ dvārakāyāṁ ca saṁsthitam | subhikṣe bho dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ phalaṁ lakṣaguṇaṁ bhavet || 6 ||

O best of brahmins, whoever feeds even a single brahmin while residing in Dvaraka, in times of abundance, obtains a hundred-thousandfold fruit.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.485.7)

phalaṁ lakṣaguṇaṁ proktaṁ durbhikṣe kṛṣṇasannidhau | evaṁ dharmānusāreṇa dayādbhikṣāṁ tu bhikṣuke || 7 ||

In times of famine, in the presence of Krishna, its fruit is declared to be a hundred-thousandfold. Thus, according to dharma, alms should be given with compassion to a beggar.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.485.8)

api naḥ sa kule kaścidbhaviṣyati narottamaḥ | yo yatīnāṁ kalau prāpte pitṝnuddiśya dāsyati || 8 ||

Will there ever be, in our lineage, some excellent man who, when the Kali age arrives, will give gifts to ascetics for the sake of his ancestors?

Verse 9 (skanda.7.485.9)

dvārakāyāṁ viśeṣeṇa satkṛtya kṛṣṇasannidhau | annadānaṁ yatīnāṁ tu kaupīnācchādanāni ca || 9 ||

Especially in Dvaraka, in the presence of Krishna, with honor, giving food and loincloth-garments to ascetics?

Verse 10 (skanda.7.485.10)

nātmanaḥ kratubhiḥ sviṣṭairnāsti tīrthaiḥ prayojanam | yatra vā tatra vā kāryaṁ yatīnāṁ prīṇanaṁ sadā || 10 ||

There is no special need for sacrifices well-performed by oneself, nor for sacred fords. Wherever one may be, the gratification of ascetics is ever to be practiced.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.485.11)

śvapacādayo'pi te dhanyā ye gatā dvārakāṁ purīm | prāpya bhāgavatānye vai pitṝnuddiśya putrakāḥ || 11 ||

Even outcastes are blessed if they have gone to the city of Dvaraka, and sons, having reached there, dedicating their offering to their ancestors, honor the Bhagavatas,

Verse 12 (skanda.7.485.12)

bhaktyā saṁpūjayiṣyaṁti vastrairdānaiśca bhūribhiḥ || 12 ||

with devotion, worshipping them with garments and abundant gifts.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.485.13)

gayāpiṇḍena nāsmākaṁ tṛptirbhavati tādṛśī | yādṛśī viṣṇubhaktānāṁ satkāreṇopajāyate || 13 ||

We do not obtain such satisfaction from the offering of rice-balls at Gaya as arises from the honoring of Vishnu's devotees.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.485.14)

vaiśākhe ye kariṣyaṁti dvādaśīṁ kṛṣṇasannidhau | kṛṣṇaṁ saṁpūjayaṁtaśca rātrau kurvaṁti jāgaram || 14 ||

Those who, in the month of Vaishakha, observe the Dvadashi in the presence of Krishna, worshipping Krishna and keeping vigil through the night,

Verse 15 (skanda.7.485.15)

māhātmyaṁ paṭhanīyaṁ tu dvārakāsaṁbhavaṁ śubham | kṛṣṇasya bālacaritaṁ bālakṛṣṇādidarśanam || 15 ||

They should recite the auspicious glory born of Dvaraka, the childhood exploits of Krishna, the vision of the child Krishna and the like,

Verse 16 (skanda.7.485.16)

krīḍanaṁ gokulasyaiva krīḍā gopījanasya ca | kṛṣṇāvatārakarmāṇi śrotavyāni punaḥpunaḥ || 16 ||

The sports of Gokula, the sports of the cowherd maidens, and the deeds of Krishna's incarnation should be heard again and again.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.485.17)

rukmaśṛṅgīṁ raupyakhurīṁ muktālāṁgūlabhūṣitām | savatsāṁ brāhmaṇe dattvā homārthaṁ cāhitāgnaye || 17 ||

Giving a cow with golden horns, silver hooves, a tail adorned with pearls, together with her calf, for the fire-sacrifice, to a brahmin who maintains the sacred fire,

Verse 18 (skanda.7.485.18)

nimiṣasparśanāṁśena phalaṁ kṛṣṇasya jāgare | yatkiṁcitkurute pāpaṁ koṭijanmasu mānavaḥ | kṛṣṇasya jāgare rātrau dahate nātra saṁśayaḥ || 18 ||

In Krishna's vigil, even the fruit of a momentary touch is obtained. Whatever sin a man commits over a crore of births is, without doubt, burnt away during the night of Krishna's vigil.

Verse 19 (skanda.7.485.19)

paṭhedbhāgavataṁ rātrau purāṇaṁ dayitaṁ hareḥ | yāvatsūryakṛtāloko yāvaccandrakṛtā niśā || 19 ||

One should recite the Bhagavata Purana at night, the scripture dear to Hari. As long as the sun creates daylight and the moon creates the night,

Verse 20 (skanda.7.485.20)

yāvatsasāgarā pṛthvī yāvacca kulaparvatāḥ | tāvatkālaṁ vasetsvarge nānyathā mama bhāṣitam || 20 ||

As long as the earth exists with its oceans, and as long as the principal mountains exist, for that long he dwells in heaven — this word of mine is not otherwise.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.485.21)

āsphoṭayaṁti pitaraḥ praharṣaṁti pitāmahāḥ | evaṁ taṁ svasutaṁ dṛṣṭvā śṛṇvānaṁ kṛṣṇasaṁbhavam || 21 ||

The ancestors leap for joy, the forefathers rejoice — seeing their own son thus listening to the narrative born of Krishna.

Verse 22 (skanda.7.485.22)

dvārakāyāśca māhātmyaṁ yatra no jāgare paṭhet | tanmlecchasadṛśaṁ sthānamapavitraṁ parityajet || 22 ||

The place where the glory of Dvaraka is not recited during the vigil — that place, being like that of a barbarian, impure, should be abandoned.

Verse 23 (skanda.7.485.23)

śāligrāmaśilā naiva yatra bhāgavatā na hi | tyajettīrthaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ puṇyamāyatanaṁ tyajet || 23 ||

Where there is no Shaligrama stone, and where there are no devotees of Bhagavata — even that greatly sacred ford should be forsaken, that sacred abode should be forsaken.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.485.24)

tyajedguhyaṁ tathā'raṇyaṁ yatra na dvādaśīvratam || 24 ||

One should also forsake that cave or forest where the Dvadashi vow is not observed.

Verse 25 (skanda.7.485.25)

sudeśo'pi bhavennindyo yatra no vaiṣṇavā vratam | kudeśo'pi bhavetpuṇyo yatra bhāgavatāḥ kalau || 25 ||

Even a good land becomes contemptible if the Vaishnava vow is absent there. Even a bad land becomes sacred, in the Kali age, if devotees of Bhagavata are there.

Verse 26 (skanda.7.485.26)

saṁkīrṇayonayaḥ pūtā ye bhaktā madhusūdane | mlecchatulyāḥ kulīnāste ye na bhaktā janārdane || 26 ||

Those born of mixed origin are pure if they are devotees of Madhusudana. The highborn are equal to barbarians if they are not devoted to Janardana.

Verse 27 (skanda.7.485.27)

rathārūḍhaṁ prakurvaṁti ye kṛṣṇaṁ madhumādhave | muktiṁ prayāṁti te sarve kulakoṭisamanvitāḥ || 27 ||

Those who, in the month of Madhu-Madhava (Chaitra), place Krishna upon a chariot — all of them attain liberation, together with a crore of their lineage.

Verse 28 (skanda.7.485.28)

devakīnandanasyārthe rathaṁ kārāpayaṁti ye | kalpāṁtaṁ viṣṇuloke te vasaṁti pitṛbhiḥ saha || 28 ||

Those who commission a chariot for the son of Devaki dwell in the world of Vishnu, together with their ancestors, until the end of the age.

Verse 29 (skanda.7.485.29)

dvārakāyāstu māhātmyaṁ śrāvayedyaḥ kalau nṛṇām | bhāvamutpādayedyo vai labhetkratuśataṁ phalam || 29 ||

Whoever, in the Kali age, causes men to hear the glory of Dvaraka, whoever awakens devotion in them, obtains the fruit of a hundred sacrifices.

Verse 30 (skanda.7.485.30)

yo nārcayati pāpiṣṭho devamanyatra gacchati | koṭijanmārjitaṁ puṇyaṁ harate rukmiṇīpatiḥ || 30 ||

The most sinful man who does not worship, and goes elsewhere in search of a deity, has the merit accumulated over a crore of births taken away by the Lord of Rukmini.

Verse 31 (skanda.7.485.31)

śaṅkhoddhārasamudbhūtāṁ nityaṁ dehe bibhartti hi | mṛttikāṁ daityarājendra śṛṇu vakṣyāmi yatphalam || 31 ||

O king of the demons, hear the fruit — I shall tell it — of one who constantly bears upon his body the clay sprung from Shankhoddhara.

Verse 32 (skanda.7.485.32)

yo dadāti yatīnāṁ ca vaiṣṇavānāṁ prayacchati | svarṇabhāraśataṁ puṇḍraṁ nityaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ || 32 ||

One who gives this to ascetics and offers it to Vaishnavas, that man daily obtains the fruit of the sectarian mark equal to the gift of a hundred loads of gold.

Verse 33 (skanda.7.485.33)

gṛhe yasya sadā tiṣṭheccchaṁkhoddhārasya mṛttikā | nityakriyākṛtaṁ puṇyaṁ labhetkoṭiguṇaṁ bale || 33 ||

In whose house the clay of Shankhoddhara constantly remains, he obtains the merit of his daily rites a crorefold, O Bali.

Verse 34 (skanda.7.485.34)

yasya puṇḍraṁ lalāṭe tu gopīcaṁdanasaṁjñakam | na jahāti gṛhaṁ tasya lakṣmīḥ kṛṣṇapriyā dvijāḥ || 34 ||

O brahmins, from the house of him whose forehead bears the mark called Gopichandana, Lakshmi, beloved of Krishna, never departs.

Verse 35 (skanda.7.485.35)

na graho bādhate tasya norago na ca rākṣasaḥ | piśācā na ca kūṣmāṁḍā na ca pretā na jaṁbhakāḥ || 35 ||

No planet afflicts him, nor serpent, nor demon; nor goblins, nor kushmandas, nor ghosts, nor jambhakas.

Verse 36 (skanda.7.485.36)

nāgnicaurabhayaṁ tasya darīṇāṁ caiva baṁdhanam | vidyudulkābhayaṁ caiva na cotpātasamudbhavam || 36 ||

He has no fear of fire or thieves, nor imprisonment, nor fear of lightning and meteors, nor any fear born of calamity.

Verse 37 (skanda.7.485.37)

nāriṣṭaṁ nāpaśakunaṁ durnimittādikaṁ ca yat | satkṛte viṣṇubhakte ca śāligrāmaśilārcane || 37 ||

No calamitous sign, no ill omen, no adverse portent occurs — for one who honors a devotee of Vishnu, and worships the Shaligrama stone,

Verse 38 (skanda.7.485.38)

pīte pādodake viprā naivedyasyāpi bhakṣaṇe | tulasīsannidhau viṣṇorvilayāvasare kṛte || 38 ||

O brahmins, in drinking his foot-water, in partaking of his food-offering, and even at the time of dissolution when it occurs near Vishnu's Tulasi — no misfortune occurs.

Verse 39 (skanda.7.485.39)

purā devena kathitaṁ śṛṇu pātraṁ vadāmyaham | priyā bhāgavatā yeṣāṁ teṣāṁ dāso'smyahaṁ sadā || 39 ||

Hear what was spoken of old by the Lord; I shall tell it — "Of those to whom the devotees are dear, I am ever the servant."

Verse 40 (skanda.7.485.40)

vihāya mathurāṁ kāśīmavantīṁ sarvapāpahām | māyāṁ kāṁcīmayodhyāṁ ca saṁprāpte ca kalau yuge || 40 ||

Leaving Mathura, Kashi, the sin-destroying Avanti, Maya, Kanchi and Ayodhya, when the Kali age has arrived,

Verse 41 (skanda.7.485.41)

vasāmyahaṁ dvārakāyāṁ sarvasenāsamāvṛtaḥ | tīrthavrataiiryajñadānai rudrādyairmunicāraṇaiḥ || 41 ||

I dwell in Dvaraka, surrounded by all my hosts, together with sacred fords, vows, sacrifices, gifts, Rudra and the other gods, and sages and celestial bards.

Verse 42 (skanda.7.485.42)

śraddhātyāgena bhaktyā vā yastoṣayitumicchati | gatvā dvāravatīṁ ramyāṁ draṣṭavyo'haṁ kalau yuge || 42 ||

Whoever wishes to please me through faith, renunciation, or devotion should, in the Kali age, go to the delightful Dvaravati and behold me there.

Verse 43 (skanda.7.485.43)

trailokye yāni tīrthāni mayā śuddhāni bhūriśaḥ | vinyastāni ca gomatyāṁ cakratīrthe'tipāvane || 43 ||

Whatever sacred fords exist in the three worlds, all of them, thoroughly purified by me, have been deposited in the Gomati, at the most sacred Chakra-tirtha.

Verse 44 (skanda.7.485.44)

dinenaikena gomatyāṁ cakratīrthe kalau yuge | trailokyasaṁbhavaistīrthaiḥ snāto bhavati mānavaḥ || 44 ||

In the Kali age, a man who bathes but a single day in the Gomati at Chakra-tirtha becomes as one who has bathed in all the sacred fords born throughout the three worlds.

Verse 45 (skanda.7.485.45)

koṭipāpavinirmukto matsamaṁ vasate naraḥ | mama loke na saṁdehaḥ kulakoṭisamanvitaḥ || 45 ||

Freed from crores of sins, that man dwells, equal to myself, together with a crore of his lineage, in my world — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 46 (skanda.7.485.46)

nāparādhakṛtaiḥ pāpairliptaḥ syādutkaṭaiḥ kṛtaiḥ | śatajanmāyutānīha lakṣmīrna cyavate gṛhāt || 46 ||

He is not tainted even by sins arising from offenses committed in violent excess. Here, for hundreds and thousands of births, Lakshmi does not depart from his house.
