Chapter 485All chaptersChapter 487

Verse 1 (skanda.7.486.1)

śrīprahlāda uvāca | jayā ca vijayā caiva jayaṁtī pāpanāśinī | unmīlinī vaṁjulī ca trispṛśā pakṣavarddhinī || 1 ||

Shri Prahlada said: Jaya, and Vijaya, and the sin-destroying Jayanti, Unmilini, Vanjuli, the triple-touching one, and the fortnight-extending one —

Verse 2 (skanda.7.486.2)

puṇyaṁ sarvapurāṇānāṁ te labhaṁte dinedine | pakvānnaṁ ye prakurvaṁti havirddhānyasamudbhavam || 2 ||

Those who, on these tithis, prepare cooked food born of oblation-grains obtain daily the merit of all the Puranas.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.486.3)

jāgare padmanābhasya ghṛtenaiva supācitam | vartidvayasamāyuktaṁ dīpaṁ ghṛtasamanvitam || 3 ||

In the vigil of Padmanabha, food well-cooked in ghee alone, and a ghee-filled lamp fitted with two wicks should be offered.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.486.4)

yaḥ kuryājjāgare viṣṇoḥ śāligrāmaśilāgrataḥ | śālagrāmaśilāgre tu ye prakurvaṁti jāgaram || 4 ||

He who performs Vishnu's vigil before the Shaligrama stone — those who keep vigil before the Shaligrama stone,

Verse 5 (skanda.7.486.5)

kurvaṁti nṛtyavādye ca lokānāṁ raṁjanāya ca | saṁchādayaṁti kusumaiḥ śāligrāmaśilāṁ ca ye || 5 ||

Who perform dance and music for the delight of the people, and who cover the Shaligrama stone with flowers,

Verse 6 (skanda.7.486.6)

cakrāṁkitāṁ viśeṣeṇa pratimāṁ vaiṣṇavīṁ dvijāḥ | caṁdanaṁ ca sakarpūraṁ kṛṣṇāgurusamanvitam || 6 ||

O brahmins, especially the discus-marked Vaishnavi image — with sandal-paste mixed with camphor and black aloewood,

Verse 7 (skanda.7.486.7)

yuktaṁ mṛgamadenāpi yaḥ karoti vilepanam | dvādaśyāṁ devadevasya rātrau jāgaraṇe sadā || 7 ||

And with musk added, whoever always applies this unguent during the night-vigil of the God of gods on the Dvadashi,

Verse 8 (skanda.7.486.8)

tasya puṇyaṁ pravakṣyāmi saṁkṣepeṇa ca vo'grataḥ | tatphalaṁ koṭitīrthe tu ujjayinyāṁ mahālaye || 8 ||

I shall tell you his merit briefly — that fruit is like the fruit obtained at Koti-tirtha, at the great temple of Ujjayini,

Verse 9 (skanda.7.486.9)

vārāṇasyāṁ kurukṣetre mathurāyāṁ tripuṣkare | ayodhyāyāṁ prayāge ca tīrthe sāgarasaṁgame || 9 ||

At Varanasi, Kurukshetra, Mathura, Tripushkara, Ayodhya, Prayaga, and the ford at the ocean's confluence,

Verse 10 (skanda.7.486.10)

sarvapuṇyeṣu tīrtheṣu devatāyataneṣu ca | kṛtairyajñāyutaistatra vratadānaiśca puṣkalaiḥ || 10 ||

In all the sacred fords and in the abodes of the deities, through ten thousand sacrifices performed there and abundant vows and gifts,

Verse 11 (skanda.7.486.11)

vedairadhītairyatpuṇyaṁ purāṇaiścāvagāhitaiḥ | tapobhiścaritaiḥ puṇyaṁ samyagāśramapālanaiḥ || 11 ||

Whatever merit comes from studying the Vedas, from immersing oneself in the Puranas, from practicing austerities, and from properly observing the duties of one's stage of life,

Verse 12 (skanda.7.486.12)

yatphalaṁ munibhiḥ proktaṁ vedavyāsena putraka | tatphalaṁ jāgare viṣṇoḥ pakṣayoḥ śuklakṛṣṇayoḥ || 12 ||

O son, whatever fruit has been declared by the sages and by Vedavyasa — that same fruit is obtained from Vishnu's vigil in both the bright and dark fortnights.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.486.13)

haimavatyai purā proktaṁ kailāse śūlapāṇinā | nāradāya purā proktaṁ brahmaṇā matsamīpataḥ || 13 ||

This was declared of old by the trident-bearer on Kailasa to Haimavati (Parvati), and declared of old by Brahma, near me, to Narada.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.486.14)

aruṇena vajrahastāya kathitaṁ pṛcchate purā | dvādaśījāgarasyoktaṁ phalaṁ viprā mayā ca vaḥ | tatkurudhvaṁ dvijā yūyaṁ jāgaraṁ viṣṇuvāsare || 14 ||

Of old, this was told by Aruna to Vajrahasta (Indra) when he questioned him. O brahmins, I too have told you all the fruit of the Dvadashi vigil. Therefore, O brahmins, all of you keep vigil on Vishnu's day.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.486.15)

sūta uvāca | ityuktvā brāhmaṇānprāha baliṁ pautraṁ svakaṁ tataḥ | tvamapi śraddhayā pautra kuru jāgaraṇaṁ hareḥ || 15 ||

Suta said: Having said this to the brahmins, he then said to his own grandson Bali: O grandson, you too, with faith, keep the vigil of Hari.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.486.16)

dvārakā manasā dhyātā pāpaṁ varṣaśatānvitam | kīrtanācchatajanmotthaṁ dahate nātra saṁśayaḥ || 16 ||

By meditating on Dvaraka in the mind, sin of a hundred years is destroyed; by chanting of it, sin arising from a hundred births is burnt away, without doubt.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.486.17)

pāpaṁ janmasahasrotthaṁ padamātreṇa gacchatām | dvārakā harate nūnaṁ muktiḥ kṛṣṇasya darśanāt || 17 ||

For those who set out on the way, Dvaraka certainly removes sin arising from a thousand births by a mere step, and liberation comes from the sight of Krishna.

Verse 18 (skanda.7.486.18)

na śaknoti yadā gaṁtuṁ dvārakāṁ caiva mānavaḥ | māhātmyaṁ paṭhanīyaṁ tu dvārakāsaṁbhavaṁ gṛhe || 18 ||

When a man is unable to go to Dvaraka, he should recite at home the glory born of Dvaraka.

Verse 19 (skanda.7.486.19)

dātavyaṁ vaiṣṇavānāṁ tu śrotavyaṁ bhaktibhāvataḥ | dvādaśyāṁ ca viśeṣeṇa paṭhanīyaṁ tu jāgare || 19 ||

It should be given to Vaishnavas, heard with devotion, and especially recited during the vigil on the Dvadashi.

Verse 20 (skanda.7.486.20)

dvārakāsaṁbhavaṁ puṇyaṁ sa saṁprāpnoti mānavaḥ | prasādādvāsudevasya satyaṁsatyaṁ ca bhāṣitam || 20 ||

That man obtains, by the grace of Vasudeva, the merit born of Dvaraka — truly, truly, this is spoken.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.486.21)

gṛhe saṁtiṣṭhate nityaṁ mathurā dvārakā tathā | avaṁtī ca tathā māyā prayāgaṁ kurujāṁgalam || 21 ||

In his house dwell perpetually both Mathura and Dvaraka, and likewise Avanti, Maya, Prayaga and Kurujangala,

Verse 22 (skanda.7.486.22)

tripuṣkaraṁ naimiṣaṁ ca gaṁgādvāraṁ ca saukaram | caṁdreśaṁ caiva kedāraṁ tathā rudramahālayam || 22 ||

Tripushkara, Naimisha, Gangadvara, Saukara, Chandresha, Kedara, and Rudramahalaya as well,

Verse 23 (skanda.7.486.23)

vastrāpathaṁ mahādevaṁ mahākālaṁ tathaiva ca | bhūteśvaraṁ bhasmagātraṁ somanāthamumāpatim || 23 ||

Vastrapatha, Mahadeva, Mahakala, Bhuteshvara, Bhasmagatra, Somanatha, and Umapati as well,

Verse 24 (skanda.7.486.24)

koṭiliṁgaṁ trinetraṁ ca devaṁ bhṛguvanecaram | dīpeśvaraṁ mahānādaṁ devaṁ caivācaleśvaram || 24 ||

Kotilinga, Trinetra, the god who dwells in Bhrigu's forest, Dipeshvara, Mahanada, and the god Achaleshvara as well — all these dwell forever in his house.

Verse 25 (skanda.7.486.25)

brahmādayaḥ suragaṇā gṛhe tiṣṭhaṁti sarvadā | pitaro nāgagaṁdharvā munayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ || 25 ||

Brahma and the other hosts of gods, the ancestors, the nagas, the gandharvas, the sages, and the siddhas and charanas dwell forever in his house.

Verse 26 (skanda.7.486.26)

tīrthāni yāni kāni syurasvamedhādayo makhāḥ | kṛṣṇajanmāṣṭamīṁ pautra yaḥ karoti viśeṣataḥ || 26 ||

Whatever sacred fords there are, whatever sacrifices such as the Ashvamedha — O grandson, he who especially observes Krishna's Janmashtami obtains the fruit of them all.

Verse 27 (skanda.7.486.27)

yathā bhāgavataṁ śāstraṁ tathā bhāgavato naraḥ | ubhayoraṁtaraṁ nāsti harahar yostathaiva ca || 27 ||

As the Bhagavata scripture is, so is the devotee. There is no difference between the two, just as there is none between Hara and Hari.

Verse 28 (skanda.7.486.28)

nīlīkṣetraṁ tu yo yāti mūlakaṁ bhakṣayettu yaḥ | naivāsti narakoddhāraṁ kalpakoṭiśatairapi || 28 ||

Whoever goes into a field of indigo, or eats radish — for him there is no deliverance from hell even in a hundred crore ages.

Verse 29 (skanda.7.486.29)

nīlīkarma tu yaḥ kuryādbrāhmaṇo lobhamohitaḥ | nāpnoti sukṛtaṁ kiṁcitkuryādvā rasavikrayam || 29 ||

A brahmin who, deluded by greed, cultivates indigo, or engages in the trade of liquids, obtains no merit whatsoever.

Verse 30 (skanda.7.486.30)

prasīdati na viśvātmā vaiṣṇave cāpamānite | aśvatthaṁ chedayedyo vai ekaikasmiṁśca parvaṇi || 30 ||

The Soul of the Universe is not pleased if a Vaishnava is insulted. Whoever cuts down a peepal tree on each and every sacred occasion,

Verse 31 (skanda.7.486.31)

manvaṁtarāṇi tāvaṁti raurave vasatirbhavet | ariṣṭakāṣṭhairdaityendra kāryaṁ yaḥ kurute kvacit | na pūjāmarghadānaṁ ca tasya gṛhṇāti bhāskaraḥ || 31 ||

For as many Manvantaras must he dwell in the hell of Raurava. O lord of demons, whoever anywhere performs any rite using the wood of the arishta tree — the sun does not accept his worship or water-offering.

Verse 32 (skanda.7.486.32)

chedāpakasya cārke tu cchedakasya ca daityaja | śataṁ janmāni dāridyaṁ jāyate ca sarogatā || 32 ||

O son of the demons, for one who causes it to be cut and for the one who cuts it, poverty and disease connected with the sun arise for a hundred births.

Verse 33 (skanda.7.486.33)

ropayetpālayedyo vai sūryavṛkṣaṁ narottamaḥ | saptakalpaṁ vasetso'tra samīpe bhāskarasya hi || 33 ||

The excellent man who plants and tends the tree of the sun, the peepal, dwells for seven kalpas in the very presence of the sun.

Verse 34 (skanda.7.486.34)

ropitairdevavṛkṣaistu yatphalaṁ lakṣakoṭibhiḥ | nyagrodhavṛkṣeṇaikena ropitena phalaṁ hi tat || 34 ||

The fruit obtained from planting millions and crores of divine trees is obtained from planting even a single banyan tree.

Verse 35 (skanda.7.486.35)

dhātrīdrume'pyevameva phalaṁ bhavati ropite | tulasīropaṇe caiva adhikaṁ cāpi suvrata | amaratvaṁ ca te yāṁti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā || 35 ||

The same fruit accrues from planting the amla tree. O virtuous one, planting Tulasi yields even greater fruit, and such persons attain immortality — there should be no doubt about this.

Verse 36 (skanda.7.486.36)

In the Kali age, whoever rises in the morning and chants of Dvaraka is freed from all sins and goes to heaven, without doubt.

Verse 37 (skanda.7.486.37)

rohiṇīsahitā ye na dvādaśī samupoṣitā | mahāpātakasaṁyuktaḥ kalpāṁte nākamāpnuyāt || 37 ||

Those who do not fast on the Dvadashi coinciding with Rohini, burdened with great sin, do not attain heaven even at the end of the age.

Verse 38 (skanda.7.486.38)

vāsaraḥ ko vinā sūryaṁ vinā somena kā niśā | vinā vṛkṣeṇa ko grāmo dvādaśī kiṁ vrataṁ vinā || 38 ||

What is a day without the sun? What is a night without the moon? What is a village without a tree? What is a vow without the Dvadashi vow?

Verse 39 (skanda.7.486.39)

gṛhaṁ ca narakaṁ tasya yamadaṇḍaṁ dvitīyakam | na yatra paṭhate nityaṁ viṣṇornāmasahasrakam || 39 ||

The house in which the thousand names of Vishnu are not recited daily is itself a hell — it is as if a second scepter of Yama.

Verse 40 (skanda.7.486.40)

narakaṁ ca bhavettasya dvitīyaṁ yamaśāsanam | naiva bhāgavataṁ yatra purāṇaṁ gīyate kalau | andhakūpeṣu kṣipyaṁte jvaliteṣu hutāśane || 40 ||

The house in which the Bhagavata Purana is not sung in the Kali age is likewise a hell, a second decree of Yama. Such people are cast into blind wells and into blazing fire.

Verse 41 (skanda.7.486.41)

Those who hate the devotees, and who do not observe Hari's day, are led away by Yama's messengers, and they suffer likewise upon this earth.

Verse 42 (skanda.7.486.42)

vācyamānaṁ na śṛṇvaṁti hareścaritamuttamam | karapatraiśca pīḍyaṁte sutīvrairyamaśāsanāt || 42 ||

Those who do not listen when the sublime deeds of Hari are being recited are tormented, by Yama's decree, with most sharp saws.

Verse 43 (skanda.7.486.43)

niṁdāṁ kurvaṁti ye pāpā vaiṣṇavānāṁ mahātmanām | teṣāṁ nirayapātastu yāvadābhūtasaṁplavam || 43 ||

Those sinners who slander the great-souled Vaishnavas fall into hell and remain there until the dissolution of creation.

Verse 44 (skanda.7.486.44)

gokoṭitīrthādadhikaṁ snānaṁ tatrādhikaṁ bhavet | ye paśyaṁti mahāpuṇyā gopīcaṁdanamṛttikām | gaṁgāsnānaphalaṁ teṣāṁ jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ || 44 ||

Bathing there is more meritorious even than the gift of a crore cows. Those who behold the greatly sacred Gopichandana clay obtain the fruit of bathing in the Ganga, without doubt.

Verse 45 (skanda.7.486.45)

vaiṣṇavānāṁ prayacchaṁti gopīcaṁdanamṛttikām | yeṣāṁ lalāṭe tilakaḥ gopīcaṁdanasaṁbhavam || 45 ||

Those who offer Gopichandana clay to the Vaishnavas, whose foreheads bear the mark made of Gopichandana,

Verse 46 (skanda.7.486.46)

gopīcaṁdanapuṁḍreṇa dvādaśyāṁ jāgare kṛte | viṣṇornāmasahasrasya pāṭhena muktimāpnuyāt || 46 ||

With the Gopichandana mark, keeping the Dvadashi vigil, through recitation of Vishnu's thousand names, one attains liberation.

Verse 47 (skanda.7.486.47)

ye nityaṁ prātarutthāya vaiṣṇavānāṁ tu kīrtanam | gomatīsmaraṇaṁ kuryuḥ kṛṣṇatulyā na saṁśayaḥ || 47 ||

Those who, rising daily at dawn, chant of the Vaishnavas and remember the Gomati are equal to Krishna, without doubt.

Verse 48 (skanda.7.486.48)

ye nityaṁ prātarutthāya dvāraketi vadaṁti ca | tīrthakoṭibhavaṁ puṇyaṁ labhaṁte ca dinedine || 48 ||

Those who, rising daily at dawn, utter the word "Dvaraka," obtain every single day the merit born of a crore sacred fords.
