The Glory of Chatvara-devi

Verse 1 (skanda.7.62.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि तृतीयां चत्वरप्रियाम्। ललितापूर्वदिग्भागे दशधन्वंतरे स्थिताम्

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi tṛtīyāṁ catvarapriyām| lalitāpūrvadigbhāge daśadhanvaṁtare sthitām

Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the third messenger-goddess, dear to Chatvara, situated ten bow-lengths away in the eastern direction from Lalita.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.62.2)

क्षेत्रदूतीं महारौद्रीं रुद्रशक्तिं महाप्रभाम्। क्षेत्ररक्षाविधौ तत्र मया मुक्तां तु मध्यतः

kṣetradūtīṁ mahāraudrīṁ rudraśaktiṁ mahāprabhām| kṣetrarakṣāvidhau tatra mayā muktāṁ tu madhyataḥ

She is the great Raudri messenger of the field, the Shakti of Rudra of great splendor, appointed by me in the midst of the field for the task of guarding the sacred territory.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.62.3)

कोटिभूतसमायुक्ता महाकाया महाप्रभा। जीर्णे गृहे तथोद्याने प्रासादाट्टालके पथि

koṭibhūtasamāyuktā mahākāyā mahāprabhā| jīrṇe gṛhe tathodyāne prāsādāṭṭālake pathi

Accompanied by crores of spirit-attendants, of vast form, of great splendor; in a ruined house, in a garden, on the terrace of a mansion, on the road,

Verse 4 (skanda.7.62.4)

चत्वरेषु च सर्वेषु क्षेत्रमध्यस्थिता सती। रात्रौ पर्यटते देवी भूतानां कोटिभिर्वृता

catvareṣu ca sarveṣu kṣetramadhyasthitā satī| rātrau paryaṭate devī bhūtānāṁ koṭibhirvṛtā

and in all the crossroads, established in the midst of the field, that virtuous Goddess wanders about at night, surrounded by crores of spirit-attendants.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.62.5)

महानवम्यां यस्तत्र नारी वाथ नरोपि वा। नानापूजोपचारैश्च पूजयेद्विधिवच्छुभाम्

mahānavamyāṁ yastatra nārī vātha naropi vā| nānāpūjopacāraiśca pūjayedvidhivacchubhām

Whatever woman or man worships that auspicious Goddess there according to rite, with various offerings of worship, on the Mahanavami,

Verse 6 (skanda.7.62.6)

तस्य तुष्टाऽखिलान्कामान्सादेवी संप्रदास्यति। दंपत्योर्भोजनं तत्र देयं यात्राफलेप्सुभिः

tasya tuṣṭā'khilānkāmānsādevī saṁpradāsyati| daṁpatyorbhojanaṁ tatra deyaṁ yātraphalepsubhiḥ

pleased with him, that Goddess shall grant all his desires. Those who desire the fruit of the pilgrimage should feed married couples there.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.62.7)

इति संक्षेपतः प्रोक्तं माहात्म्यं पापनाशनम्। क्षेत्रदूत्यास्तृतीयायाः श्रुतमैश्वर्यकारकम्

iti saṁkṣepataḥ proktaṁ māhātmyaṁ pāpanāśanam| kṣetradūtyāstṛtīyāyāḥ śrutamaiśvaryakārakam

Thus has been briefly told this glory of the third messenger-goddess of the field, destroyer of sin and bestower of prosperity, as it has been heard.
