Chapter 60All chaptersChapter 62

Verse 1 (skanda.7.61.1)

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevīṁ kṣetradūtīṁ tu vaiṣṇavīm| śrīdaityasūdanāddevi pūrvabhāge vyavasthitām

Ishvara said: Then one should approach the great Goddess, the Vaishnavi messenger of the field, situated, O Goddess, to the east of Shri-Daityasudana.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.61.2)

yogeśvaryāstathaiśānyāṁ dhanuṣāṁ saptake sthitām| mahādaurbhāgyadagdhānāṁ sthitāṁ bheṣajarūpiṇīm

She stands to the northeast of Yogeshvari, seven bow-lengths away; she abides in the form of medicine for those scorched by great misfortune.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.61.3)

cākṣuṣasyāṁtare devi yadā daityā balotkaṭāḥ| hanyamānā viṣṇunā'tha dakṣiṇāṁ diśamāviśan

O Goddess, in the Chakshusha interval, when daityas of excessive strength, being slain by Vishnu, entered the southern direction,

Verse 4 (skanda.7.61.4)

tatra varṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ daityāścakrurmahāhavam| viṣṇunā saha deveśi divyāstraiśca pṛthagvidhaiḥ

there, O Goddess of gods, the daityas waged a great war against Vishnu for more than a hundred years, with various divine weapons.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.61.5)

duḥkhavadhyāṁstato jñātvā viṣṇuḥ kamalalocanaḥ| sasmāra bhairavīṁ śaktiṁ mahāmāyāṁ mahāprabhām

Then the lotus-eyed Vishnu, recognizing them as difficult to slay, invoked the Shakti Bhairavi, the great Maya, of great splendor.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.61.6)

sā smṛtā kṣaṇamātreṇa viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā| tatrāgatā mahādevī ānaṁdasphuritekṣaṇā

Remembered in an instant by the mighty Vishnu, that great Goddess, her eyes sparkling with joy, came there.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.61.7)

viśāle tu kṛte devyā locane viṣṇudarśanāt| viśālākṣī tato jātā tatrasthā daityanāśinī

When the Goddess's eyes widened upon beholding Vishnu, she then became known as Vishalakshi, the destroyer of daityas, abiding there.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.61.8)

asminkalpe samākhyātā lalitomā varānane| umādvayaṁ samākhyātaṁ someśe daityasūdane

O fair-faced one, in this kalpa she is renowned as Lalitoma. Two forms of Uma are proclaimed — at Someśa and at Daityasudana.

Verse 9 (skanda.7.61.9)

pūrvaṁ someśvare paśyetpaścācchrīdaityasūdane| umā dvayaṁ pūjayitvā tīrthayātrāphalaṁ labhet

One should first behold her at Someshvara, then at Shri-Daityasudana; having worshipped both forms of Uma, one obtains the fruit of the tirtha-pilgrimage.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.61.10)

māghe māsi tṛtīyāyāṁ vidhinā yo'rcayettu tām| na saṁtativihīnaḥ syāttasyakoṭyanvaye naraḥ

Whoever worships her according to rite on the tritiya of the month of Magha — in his lineage, for a crore of generations, no man shall be without offspring.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.61.11)

yo nityamīkṣate tatra bhaktyā paramayā yutaḥ| ārogyasukhasaubhāgyasaṁyukto'sau bhavecciram

Whoever regularly beholds her there with supreme devotion shall long remain endowed with health, happiness, and good fortune.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.61.12)

iti saṁkṣepataḥ proktaṁ māhātmyaṁ lalitodbhavam| śrutaṁ yatpāpanāśāya jāyate dharmavṛddhaye

Thus has this glory arising from Lalita been briefly told, which, when heard, destroys sin and increases dharma.
