Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 75
The Glory of Kalakaleshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.7.75.1)
īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi liṅgaṁ śākalakaleśvaram| śākalyeśvaranairṛtye dhanuṣāṁ ṣaṣṭibhiḥ sthitam
Ishvara said: Thereafter, O great Goddess, one should go to the Linga called Shakalakaleshvara, situated sixty bow-lengths to the south-west of Shakalyeshvara.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.75.2)
taccaturyuganāmāḍhyaṁ smṛtaṁ pātakanāśanam| pūrvaṁ kāmeśvaraṁ nāma tretāyāṁ pulaheśvaram
It is remembered as endowed with names across the four ages, and as a destroyer of sin; formerly (in the Krita age) it was called Kameshvara, and in the Treta age, Pulaheshvara.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.75.3)
dvāpare siddhināthaṁ tu nāradeśaṁ kalau smṛtam| tathā kalakaleśaṁ ca nāma tasyaiva kīrttitam
In the Dvapara age it was known as Siddhinatha, and in the Kali age as Naradesha; likewise its name is also proclaimed as Kalakalesha.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.75.4)
samudre ca mahāpuṇye yasminkāle sarasvatī| āgatā sā mahābhāgā hṛṣṭā tuṣṭā saridvarā| tasya toyasya śabdena sāgarasya mahātmanaḥ
At the time when that most fortunate and excellent of rivers, Sarasvati, arrived joyfully and contentedly at the most sacred ocean, then, from the sound of the waters of that great ocean —
Verse 5 (skanda.7.75.5)
tato devāḥ sagandharvā ṛṣayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ| neduḥ kalakalaṁ tatra tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam
then the gods together with the Gandharvas, the sages, the Siddhas and the Charanas raised there a tumultuous, hair-raising clamour (kalakala).
Verse 6 (skanda.7.75.6)
tena śabdena mahatā mama mūrttiḥ samutthitā| kalkaleśvaranāmeti tato liṅgaṁ prakīrtitam
By that great sound, my own form arose there; from then this Linga has been proclaimed by the name Kalkaleshvara.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.75.7)
iti te pūrvavṛttāṁtaṁ kathitaṁ nāmakāraṇam| sāṁprataṁ tu yathā jātaṁ punaḥ kalakaleśvaram| tatte'haṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi śṛṇuṣvaikamanāḥ priye
Thus I have related to you the earlier account of how the name arose. Now I shall tell you how it once again came to be called Kalakaleshvara — listen, O beloved, with a focused mind.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.75.8)
purā dvāparasaṁdhau ca praviṣṭe tu kalau yuge| nāradastu samāgatya kṣetraṁ prābhāsikaṁ śubham| saṁcakāra tapaścograṁ tatra liṅgasamīpataḥ
Formerly, at the junction of the Dvapara age, as the Kali age was entering, Narada came to the auspicious Prabhasa field and performed a fierce austerity near that Linga.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.75.9)
tato varṣaśate pūrṇe samārādhya vṛṣadhvajam| gāṁdharvaṁ prāpya deveśi bhūṣitaṁ saptabhiḥ svaraiḥ
Then, when a hundred years had passed, having worshipped the Bull-bannered Lord, O Queen of gods, he obtained the art of Gandharva music, adorned with the seven musical notes.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.75.10)
Then, becoming glad at heart, he performed near that Linga a great sacrifice known as the Paundarika (yajna).
Verse 11 (skanda.7.75.11)
devadevasya tuṣṭyarthaṁ sa sadā bhāvitātmavān| samāhūya ṛṣīṁstatra brahmalokātsahasraśaḥ
For the satisfaction of the god of gods, he, ever of purified mind, summoned thousands of sages there from the world of Brahma.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.75.12)
tataḥ saṁbhṛtasaṁbhāro yajñopakaraṇānvitaḥ| kṛtvā kuṇḍādikaṁ sarvaṁ samārebhe tataḥ kratum
Then, having gathered all the requisites and being furnished with the implements of sacrifice, having prepared the fire-pits and everything else, he then commenced the rite.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.75.13)
tataḥ saṁpūrṇatāṁ prāpte tasminkratau varānane
O fair-faced one, then, when that sacrifice had reached its completion —
Verse 14 (skanda.7.75.14)
athāgamaṁstato viprāstatra kṣetranivāsinaḥ| dakṣiṇārthaṁ mahadevi śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ
then the Brahmins dwelling in that sacred field came there for the sake of the sacrificial fee, O great Goddess, in their hundreds and thousands.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.75.15)
tataḥ sa kautukāviṣṭasteṣāṁ yuddhārthameva hi| prākṣipattatra ratnāni suvarṇaṁ ca mahītale
Then, filled with mischievous curiosity, purely to make them fight among themselves, he scattered jewels and gold there upon the ground.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.75.16)
tataste brāhmaṇāḥ sarve yudhyamānāḥ parasparam| kolāhalaṁ paraṁ cakrurbahudravyaparīpsayā
Then all those Brahmins, fighting with one another, out of a desire to seize as much wealth as possible, raised an enormous uproar.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.75.17)
eke digaṁbarā devi tyaktayajñopavītinaḥ| vikacāḥ ke'pi dṛśyaṁte tvanye rudhiraviplavāḥ
O Devi, some became naked, their sacred threads torn away; some were seen with their hair in disarray; while others were drenched in blood.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.75.18)
anye parasparaṁ jaghnurmuṣṭibhiścaraṇaistathā| evaṁ tatra tadā kṣiptaṁ yaddravyaṁ nāradena tu
Others struck one another with fists and feet. Thus, the wealth which Narada had scattered there —
Verse 19 (skanda.7.75.19)
athābhāve tu vittasya ye ca viprā hyakiṁcanāḥ| vidyāvinayasaṁpannā brāhmaṇairjarjarīkṛtāḥ
And those Brahmins who, though endowed with learning and humility, had no share of that wealth, were roughly battered by the other Brahmins.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.75.20)
te tamūcurbhṛśaṁ śāṁtāḥ smayamānaṁ muhurmuhuḥ| kalahārthaṁ yato dānaṁ tvayā dattamidaṁ mune
Those tranquil (learned) Brahmins repeatedly said, smiling, to Narada, who was himself smiling again and again: 'O sage, this gift you have given was meant only to cause strife,
Verse 21 (skanda.7.75.21)
vidyāyuktānparityajya vidhiṁ tyaktvā tu yājñikam| tasmādasya mune nāma khyātaṁ kalakaleśvaram
for you passed over the learned ones and abandoned the proper sacrificial procedure.' Therefore, O sage, its name became renowned as Kalakaleshvara.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.75.22)
tena nāmnā dvijaśreṣṭha liṅgametadbhaviṣyati| etasmātkāraṇāddevi jātaṁ kalakaleśvaram
O foremost of the twice-born, by this name this Linga shall be known henceforth; O Devi, for this very reason the name Kalakaleshvara arose.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.75.23)
yastaṁ snāpya naro bhaktyā kurute triḥ pradakṣiṇam| sa gacchedrudralokaṁ tu tvatprasādādasaṁśayam
The man who, with devotion, bathes it and circumambulates it three times, goes without doubt to the world of Rudra, by your grace.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.75.24)
yastaṁ pūjayate bhaktyā gaṁdhapuṣpānulepanaiḥ| hemaṁ dattvā dvijātibhyaḥ sa gacchetparamaṁ padam
He who worships it with devotion using fragrance, flowers, and unguents, and gives gold to the twice-born, attains the supreme state.
