The Glory of Shri Daityasudana

Chapter 80All chaptersChapter 82

Verse 1 (skanda.7.81.1)

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi deveśaṁ daityasūdanam| pāpaghnaṁ sarvajaṁtūnāṁ prabhāsakṣetravāsinām

Ishvara said: Thereafter, O great Goddess, one should go to the Lord of gods, Daityasudana, who destroys the sins of all creatures dwelling in the Prabhasa field.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.81.2)

anādiyugasaṁsthānaṁ sarva kāmapradaṁ śubham| saṁsārasāgare ghore sthitaṁ naurivа tāraṇe

Existing across the ages since beginningless time, auspicious and granting every desire, it stands in the terrible ocean of worldly existence like a boat that ferries one across.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.81.3)

anye sarve'pi naśyaṁti kalpāṁte brahmaṇo dine| etāni muktvā deveśi nyagrodhaṁ sapta kalpagam

O Queen of gods, at the end of Brahma's day, when the aeon dissolves, all other things perish; but excepting these — the banyan tree that endures for seven aeons —

Verse 4 (skanda.7.81.4)

kalpavṛkṣaṁ tathā'gāraṁ vaiḍūryaṁ parvatottamam| śrīdaityasūdanaṁ devaṁ mārkaṁḍeyaṁ mahāmunim

the wish-fulfilling tree, the cat's-eye gem shrine, the finest mountain, the god Shri Daityasudana, and the great sage Markandeya —

Verse 5 (skanda.7.81.5)

akṣayāścāvyayāścaite saptakalpāni sundari| devi kiṁ bahunoktena varṇitena punaḥpunaḥ

O beautiful one, these remain imperishable and undiminished for seven aeons. O Devi, what use is there in describing this further, again and again?

Verse 6 (skanda.7.81.6)

śrīdaityasūdanāddevi nānyāsti bhuvi devatā| yavākāraṁ tu tasyaiva kṣetrapātakanāśanam

O Devi, there is no other deity on earth greater than Shri Daityasudana; his own sacred field, shaped like a barley-grain, destroys sin.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.81.7)

sevitaṁ carṣibhiḥ siddhairyakṣavidyādharoragaiḥ| tasya sīmāṁ pravakṣyāmi viṣṇukṣetrasya bhāmini

It is frequented by sages, Siddhas, Yakshas, Vidyadharas and serpents. O gracious lady, I shall now describe the boundary of that field of Vishnu.

Verse 8 (skanda.7.81.8)

pūrve yameśvaraṁ yāvacchrīsomeśaṁ tu paścime| uttare tu viśālākṣī dakṣiṇe saritāṁ patiḥ

To the east as far as Yameshvara, to the west as far as Shri Someshvara, to the north as far as Vishalakshi, and to the south as far as the lord of the rivers (the ocean) —

Verse 9 (skanda.7.81.9)

etatkṣetraṁ yavākāraṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ pāpanāśanam

this field, shaped like a barley-grain, sacred to Vishnu, destroys sin.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.81.10)

atra kṣetre mṛtā ye tu pāpino'pi narā dhruvam| svargaṁ gacchaṁti te sarve saṁtaḥ sukṛtino yathā

Men who die in this sacred field, even if they are sinners, all certainly go to heaven, just as the righteous and virtuous do.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.81.11)

atra dattaṁ hutaṁ japtaṁ tapastaptaṁ kṛtaṁ hi yat| tatsarvaṁ cākṣayaṁ proktaṁ saptakalpāvadhi priye

Whatever is given, offered in fire, muttered in prayer, or performed as austerity here, all of that, O beloved, is declared to be imperishable for the span of seven aeons.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.81.12)

tatraikamapi yo devi brāhmaṇaṁ bhojayiṣyati| vidhinā viṣṇumuddiśya koṭirbhavati bhojitā

O Devi, whoever feeds even a single Brahmin there duly, with Vishnu as the intended recipient, it becomes as though he has fed a crore of Brahmins.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.81.13)

tatropavāsaṁ yaḥ kuryānnaro bhaktisamanvitaḥ| ekenaivopavāsena upavāsāyutaṁ phalam| cakratīrthe naraḥ snātvā sopavāso jiteṁdriyaḥ

The man who, filled with devotion, observes a fast there obtains, from a single fast, the fruit of ten thousand fasts; the self-controlled man bathes in Chakratirtha and observes the fast.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.81.14)

dvādaśyāṁ kārttike māsi dadyādviprebhyaḥ kāṁcanam| viṣṇuṁ saṁpūjya vidhivanmucyate sarvapātakaiḥ

On the twelfth day of the month of Karttika, giving gold to Brahmins and duly worshipping Vishnu, one becomes freed from all sins.

Verse 15 (skanda.7.81.15)

devyuvāca| daityasūdananāmeti kathaṁ tasya prakīrtitam| kasminkāle tu deveśa tanme vistarato vada

The Devi said: O Lord of gods, how, and at what time, did his name Daityasudana become renowned? Tell me this in detail.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.81.16)

īśvara uvāca| śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi māhātmyaṁ pāpanāśanam| daityasūdanadevasya purā vṛttaṁ mahodayam

Ishvara said: Listen, O Devi, I shall relate the sin-destroying glory of the god Daityasudana — this great event that occurred long ago.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.81.17)

devi tasyaiva nāmāni kalpekalpe bhavaṁti vai| anādinidhanānyeva saṁbhavaṁti punaḥpunaḥ

O Devi, his names differ from aeon to aeon; these beginningless and endless names arise again and again.

Verse 18 (skanda.7.81.18)

pūrvakalpe śriyā vṛtto vāmanastu dvitīyake| vajrāṁgastu tṛtīye vai turīye kamalāpriyaḥ

In the previous aeon he was known as endowed with Shri (glory); in the second aeon, as Vamana; in the third, as Vajranga; and in the fourth, as Kamalapriya (beloved of Lakshmi).

Verse 19 (skanda.7.81.19)

paṁcame duḥkhaharttā ca ṣaṣṭhe tu puruṣottamaḥ| śrīdaityasūdano devaḥ kalpe vai saptame smṛtaḥ

In the fifth aeon he was Dukhaharta (remover of sorrow); in the sixth, Purushottama; and in the seventh aeon he is remembered as the god Shri Daityasudana.

Verse 20 (skanda.7.81.20)

tasyaiva nāma cotpattiṁ kathayāmi yathārthataḥ

Now I shall relate truly the origin of that very name.

Verse 21 (skanda.7.81.21)

purā devāsure yuddhe dānavairdevakaṁṭakaiḥ| nirjitā devatāḥ sarve jagmuste śaraṇaṁ harim| kṣīrodavāsinaṁ devamastuvanpraṇatāḥ sthitāḥ

Formerly, in the war between gods and demons, all the gods, defeated by the demons who were thorns to the gods, went for refuge to Hari, the god who dwells in the ocean of milk, and stood bowing, praising him.

Verse 22 (skanda.7.81.22)

devā ūcuḥ| jaya deva jagannātha daityāsuravimarddana| vārāharūpamāsthāya uddhṛtā vasudhā tvayā

The gods said: Victory to you, O Lord of the universe, destroyer of demons and Asuras! Assuming the form of a boar, you raised up the earth.

Verse 23 (skanda.7.81.23)

uddhṛtā matsyarūpeṇa vedā udadhimadhyataḥ| kūrmarūpī tathā bhūtvā kṣīrodārṇavamaṁthanam

In the form of a fish, you rescued the Vedas from the midst of the ocean; and becoming a tortoise, you churned the ocean of milk.

Verse 24 (skanda.7.81.24)

kṛtvā tvayā jagannātha uddhṛtā śrīrnamo'stu te| śrīpatiḥ śrīdharo deva ārttānāmartināśanaḥ

Having done this, O Lord of the universe, you raised up Shri (Lakshmi) — salutations to you. O Lord of Shri, Shridhara, you are the destroyer of the affliction of the afflicted.

Verse 25 (skanda.7.81.25)

balirvāmanarūpeṇa tvayā baddho'surāriṇā| hiraṇyākṣo mahādaityo hiraṇyakaśipurhataḥ

O enemy of the demons, in the form of Vamana you bound Bali; you slew the great demon Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu.

Verse 26 (skanda.7.81.26)

nārasiṁhena rūpeṇa antarikṣe dhṛtastvayā| devamūla mahādeva uddhṛtaṁ bhuvanaṁ tvayā

In the man-lion form, you held him in mid-air; O great god, the root of the gods, you have redeemed this whole world.

Verse 27 (skanda.7.81.27)

tvayā vinā jagannātha bhuvanaṁ niṣprabhī kṛtam| sūryeṇeva tu vikrāntaṁ tamobhiriva dānavaiḥ

Without you, O Lord of the universe, the world has become bereft of splendor, as though overrun by darkness-like demons in the absence of the sun.

Verse 28 (skanda.7.81.28)

śrutvā stotramidaṁ devi viṣṇuḥ kamalalocanaḥ| uvāca devānbrahmādyānkṣīrodārṇava bodhitaḥ

O Devi, having heard this hymn, the lotus-eyed Vishnu, awakened in the ocean of milk, spoke to Brahma and the other gods —

Verse 29 (skanda.7.81.29)

bhayaṁ tyajadhvaṁ vai devā dānavānprati sarvathā| acireṇaiva kālena ghātayiṣyāmi dānavān

'O gods, abandon all fear of the demons; in a very short time I shall destroy the demons.'

Verse 30 (skanda.7.81.30)

evamuktvātha taiḥ sārddhamā jagāma janārddanaḥ| dānavānghātayāmāsa sa cakreṇa pṛthakpṛthak

Having said this, Janardana came there together with them, and slew the demons one by one with his discus.

Verse 31 (skanda.7.81.31)

bhayārttā dānavāḥ sarve palāyanaparāyaṇāḥ| prabhāsaṁ kṣetramāsādya samudrābhimukhā bhavan

All the demons, tormented with fear, took to flight, and reaching the Prabhasa field, stood facing the ocean.

Verse 32 (skanda.7.81.32)

naśyamānāstato dṛṣṭvā daityāndaityavināśanam| saṁjaghne tānsa cakreṇa niḥśeṣānsarvadānavān

Seeing those demons fleeing, the destroyer of demons slew with his discus all those demons, without exception.

Verse 33 (skanda.7.81.33)

hateṣu sarvadaityeṣu devabrāhmaṇatāpasaiḥ| kalyāṇamabhavattatra jagatsvasthamanākulam

With all the demons slain, welfare came to the gods, Brahmins, and ascetics there, and the world became tranquil and undisturbed.

Verse 34 (skanda.7.81.34)

tatprabhṛtyeva devasya daityasūdananāma tat| etanmāhātmyamatulaṁ kathitaṁ tava sundari| daityasūdanadevasya mahābhāgyaṁ mahodayam

From that time onward, that god's name became Daityasudana. O beautiful one, I have thus related to you this incomparable, great, and most fortunate glory of the god Daityasudana.

Verse 35 (skanda.7.81.35)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā na jaḍo nāṁdho na daridro na duḥkhitaḥ| jāyate sapta janmāni satyaṁsatyaṁ varānane

O fair-faced one, having beheld him, one is not born dull-witted, blind, poor, or miserable for seven births — this is true, truly true.

Verse 36 (skanda.7.81.36)

śravaṇadvādaśīṁ puṇyāṁ rohiṇyāṁ cāṣṭamīṁ śubhām| śayanotthāpanīṁ caiva naraḥ kṛtvā prayatnataḥ

The man who diligently observes the meritorious Dvadashi under Shravana, the auspicious Ashtami under Rohini, and the Shayani and Utthapani (Ekadashi) observances,

Verse 37 (skanda.7.81.37)

ekaikenopavāsena upavāsāyutaṁ phalam| labhate nātra saṁdeho daityasūdanasannidhau

obtains, from each single fast, the fruit of ten thousand fasts, in the presence of Daityasudana — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 38 (skanda.7.81.38)

caṇḍālaḥ śvapaco vāpi tiryagyonigato'pi vā| prāṇatyāge kṛte tasminnācyutaṁ lokamāpnuyāt

Whether he be an outcaste, a dog-cooking Shvapaca, or even one born in an animal womb, if he gives up his life there, he attains the imperishable world (of Achyuta/Vishnu).

Verse 39 (skanda.7.81.39)

kārtikyāṁ caiva vaiśākhyāṁ māsamekamupoṣayet| daityasūdanamadhyasthaḥ samyakśraddhāsamanvitaḥ

In the month of Karttika or Vaishakha, one should fast for one whole month, dwelling near Daityasudana, endowed with complete faith.

Verse 40 (skanda.7.81.40)

ekaikenopavāsena koṭikoṭi pṛthakpṛthak| labhate tatphalaṁ sarvaṁ viṣṇukṣetraprabhāvataḥ

From each single fast one obtains, separately, a fruit multiplied a crore-fold — all this by the power of the field of Vishnu.

Verse 41 (skanda.7.81.41)

dīpaṁ dadāti yastatra māsaṁ vā pakṣameva vā| ekaika dīpadānena koṭidīpaphalaṁ labhet

Whoever offers a lamp there for a month or for a fortnight obtains, from each single lamp-offering, the fruit of a crore of lamps.

Verse 42 (skanda.7.81.42)

paṁcāmṛtena saṁsnāpya devadevaṁ caturbhujam| ekādaśyāṁ nirāhāraḥ pūjayitvā'cyuto bhavet

Bathing the four-armed god of gods with the five nectars, and worshipping him while fasting completely on Ekadashi, one becomes like Achyuta (Vishnu himself).

Verse 43 (skanda.7.81.43)

cāturmāsyaṁ vidhānena daityasūdanasannidhau| niyamena kṣipedyastu tasya tuṣyati keśavaḥ

Whoever spends the four months of the rainy season (Chaturmasya) duly and with proper discipline in the presence of Daityasudana, with him Keshava becomes pleased.

Verse 44 (skanda.7.81.44)

anyakṣetreṣu yatkṛtvā cāturmāsyāni koṭiśaḥ| tatphalaṁ labhate sarvaṁ daityasūdanadarśanāt

Whatever fruit is obtained by performing crores of Chaturmasya observances in other sacred fields, all of that fruit is obtained merely by the sight of Daityasudana.

Verse 45 (skanda.7.81.45)

brahmāṇḍaṁ sakalaṁ dattvā yatpuṇyaphalamāpnuyāt| tatpuṇyaṁ labhate sarvaṁ daityasūdanadarśanāt

Whatever meritorious fruit is obtained by giving away the entire universe as a gift, all of that merit is obtained merely by the sight of Daityasudana.

Verse 46 (skanda.7.81.46)

ekādaśyāṁ tu yastatra kurute jāgaraṁ naraḥ| gītanṛtyaistathā vādyaiḥ prekṣaṇīyaistathāvidhaiḥ| sa yāti vaiṣṇavaṁ lokaṁ yaṁ gatvā na nivarttate

The man who keeps a night-vigil there on Ekadashi with song, dance, music, and such pleasing entertainments, goes to the world of Vishnu, from which, having gone, one does not return.

Verse 47 (skanda.7.81.47)

hatyā'yutānīha susaṁcitāni steyāni rukmasya na saṁti saṁkhyā| nihaṁti kenāpi purā kṛtāni sarvāṇi bhadrā niśi jāgareṇa

Thousands of accumulated killings here, and thefts of gold beyond count — all such deeds committed at any earlier time by anyone are destroyed through the night-vigil on the auspicious (Ekadashi) night.

Verse 48 (skanda.7.81.48)

Those men for whom the auspicious (Ekadashi) night has passed in vigil do not even in dream behold the roads to the city of the dead, the messengers of Yama, or that forest with sword-edged leaves (a hell-realm).

Verse 49 (skanda.7.81.49)

kanyāsahasraṁ vidhivaddadāti ratnairalaṁkṛtya svadharmabuddhyā| gavāṁ sahasraṁ kurujāṁgale tu teṣāṁ paraṁ jāgaraṇena viṣṇoḥ

Whatever merit is obtained by duly giving a thousand maidens adorned with jewels, out of a sense of one's own righteous duty, or by the gift of a thousand cows in the Kurujangala land — greater than all that is the merit gained by keeping a night-vigil for Vishnu.

Verse 50 (skanda.7.81.50)

kṛtvā caivopavāsaṁ ca yo'śnāti dvādaśīdine| naivedyaṁ tulasīmiśraṁ hatyākoṭivināśanam

He who, having fasted, partakes on the twelfth day of the sacred food mixed with Tulasi leaves — this destroys the sin of a crore of killings.

Verse 51 (skanda.7.81.51)

iti te kathitaṁ devi māhātmyaṁ pāpanāśanam| daityasūdanadevasya kimanyatparipṛcchasi

Thus, O Devi, I have related to you this sin-destroying glory of the god Daityasudana; what more do you wish to ask?

Verse 52 (skanda.7.81.52)

pītavastrāṇi devasya gāṁ hiraṇyaṁ ca dāpayet| snātvā cakravare tīrthe mucyate sarvapātakāt

One should offer the god yellow garments, a cow, and gold; bathing in the sacred ford of Chakravara, one is freed from all sins.
