The Glory of Gautameshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.7.80.1)
ईश्वर उवाच। तस्यैव पूर्वदिग्भागे लिंगं पातकनाशनम्। गौतमेश्वरनामाढ्यं दैत्यसूदनपश्चिमे
īśvara uvāca| tasyaiva pūrvadigbhāge liṅgaṁ pātakanāśanam| gautameśvaranāmāḍhyaṁ daityasūdanapaścime
Ishvara said: To the east of that place, west of Daityasudana, stands a sin-destroying Linga endowed with the name Gautameshvara.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.80.2)
धनुषां पंचके देवि संस्थितं सर्वकामदम्। शल्येनाराधितं यद्वै मद्रराजेन भामिनि
dhanuṣāṁ paṁcake devi saṁsthitaṁ sarvakāmadam| śalyenārādhitaṁ yadvai madrarājena bhāminī
O Devi, it is situated five bow-lengths away and grants all desires; O gracious lady, it was worshipped by Shalya, the king of the Madras.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.80.3)
ततः कृतं तपश्चोग्रं समाराध्य महेश्वरम्। अन्योऽप्येवं नरो यस्तु तं समाराधयिष्यति
tataḥ kṛtaṁ tapaścograṁ samārādhya maheśvaram| anyo'pyevaṁ naro yastu taṁ samārādhayiṣyati
He performed fierce austerity there and worshipped Maheshvara. Likewise, any other man who shall worship him in this way —
Verse 4 (skanda.7.80.4)
स प्राप्स्यति परां सिद्धिं यथा शल्यो महामनाः। चैत्र शुक्लचतुर्द्दश्यां स्नापयेत्पयसा तु यः
sa prāpsyati parāṁ siddhiṁ yathā śalyo mahāmanāḥ| caitra śuklacaturddaśyāṁ snāpayetpayasā tu yaḥ
will attain the same supreme accomplishment that the great-souled Shalya attained. He who bathes it with milk on the bright fourteenth day of the month of Chaitra,
Verse 5 (skanda.7.80.5)
गंधोदकेन च ततः पूजयेत्कुसुमोत्तमैः। तथैव विधिवद्भक्त्या सोऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
gaṁdhodakena ca tataḥ pūjayetkusumottamaiḥ| tathaiva vidhivadbhaktyā so'śvamedhaphalaṁ labhet
and then worships it with fragrant water and the finest flowers, thus duly and with devotion, obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha (horse) sacrifice.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.80.6)
वाचा कृतं च यत्पापं मनसा कर्मणाऽथ वा। तत्सर्वं नश्यते देवि तस्य लिंगस्य दर्शनात्
vācā kṛtaṁ ca yatpāpaṁ manasā karmaṇā'tha vā| tatsarvaṁ naśyate devi tasya liṅgasya darśanāt
Whatever sin is committed by speech, by mind, or by action, O Devi, all of it is destroyed by the mere sight of that Linga.
