Amsa 1 · Chapter 10
The Lineages of the Sages
Verse 1 (vishnu.1.10.1)
śrīmaitreya uvāca kathitaṁ me tvayā sarvaṁ yat pṛṣṭo 'si mahāmune bhṛgusargāt prabhṛty eṣa sargo me kathyatāṁ punaḥ
Maitreya said: You have told me, O great sage, all that I had asked of you; now tell me again this creation, continuing on from the creation of Bhrigu's line.
Verse 2 (vishnu.1.10.2)
śrīparāśara uvāca bhṛgoḥ khyātyāṁ samutpannā lakṣmīr viṣṇuparigrahaḥ tathā dhātṛvidhātārau khyātyāṁ jātau sutau bhṛgoḥ
Parashara said: Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, was born in Khyati, wife of Bhrigu; and in that same Khyati were born two sons, Dhatri and Vidhatri.
Verse 3 (vishnu.1.10.3)
āyatir niyatiś caiva meroḥ kanye mahātmanaḥ dhātṛvidhātros te bhārye tayor jātau sutāv ubhau
Ayati and Niyati, the two daughters of the great-souled Meru, became the wives of Dhatri and Vidhatri; from the two of them were born two sons.
Verse 4 (vishnu.1.10.4)
prāṇaś caiva mṛkaṇḍuś ca mārkaṇḍeyo mṛkaṇḍutaḥ tato vedaśirā jajñe prāṇasyāpi sutaṁ śṛṇu
Prana and Mrikandu; from Mrikandu was born Markandeya. Hear now too of Prana's son, from whom Vedashiras was born.
Verse 5 (vishnu.1.10.5)
prāṇasya dyutimān putro rājavāṁś ca tato 'bhavat tato vaṁśo mahābhāga vistāraṁ bhārgavo gataḥ
Prana's son was Dyutiman, and from him was born Rajavan; thus, O greatly fortunate one, the lineage of Bhrigu spread far and wide.
Verse 6 (vishnu.1.10.6)
patnī marīceḥ saṁbhūtiḥ paurṇamāsam asūyata virajāḥ parvataś caiva tasya putrau mahātmanaḥ
Marichi's wife, Sambhuti, gave birth to Paurnamasa; and Virajas and Parvata were his two great-souled sons.
Verse 7 (vishnu.1.10.7)
vaṁśasaṁkīrtane putrān vadiṣye 'haṁ tato dvija smṛtiś cāṅgirasaḥ patnī prasūtā kanyakās tathā sinīvālī kuhūś caiva rākā cānumatī tathā
In the course of this genealogy I shall now tell of the sons, O twice-born; Smriti, wife of Angiras, likewise bore daughters — Sinivali, Kuhu, Raka, and Anumati.
Verse 8 (vishnu.1.10.8)
anasūyā tathaivātrer jajñe putrān akalmaṣān somaṁ durvāsasaṁ caiva dattātreyaṁ ca yoginam
Likewise Anasuya, wife of Atri, gave birth to sinless sons — Soma, Durvasas, and the yogi Dattatreya.
Verse 9 (vishnu.1.10.9)
prītyāṁ pulastyabhāryāyāṁ dattolis tatsuto 'bhavat pūrvajanmani so 'gastyaḥ smṛtaḥ svāyaṁbhuve 'ntare
To Priti, wife of Pulastya, was born a son, Dattoli; in a former birth, in the Svayambhuva epoch, he was known as Agastya.
Verse 10 (vishnu.1.10.10)
kardamaś cārvarīvāṁś ca sahiṣṇuś ca sutatrayam kṣamā tu suṣuve bhāryā pulahasya prajāpateḥ
Kardama, Charvarivan, and Sahishnu — these three sons were borne by Kshama, wife of Pulaha, lord of creatures.
Verse 11 (vishnu.1.10.11)
kratoś ca sannatir bhāryā vālakhilyān asūyata ṣaṣṭis tāni sahasrāṇi ṛṣīṇām ūrdhvaretasām aṅguṣṭhaparvamātrāṇāṁ jvaladbhāskaratejasām
To Kratu, his wife Sannati bore the Valakhilyas — sixty thousand sages of upward-tending seed, each the size of a thumb-joint, blazing with radiance like the sun.
Verse 12 (vishnu.1.10.12)
ūrjāyāṁ ca vasiṣṭhasya saptājāyanta vai sutāḥ
To Vasishtha, from his wife Urja, seven sons were born.
Verse 13 (vishnu.1.10.13)
rajo gotrordhvabāhuś ca savanaś cānaghas tathā sutapāḥ śukra ity ete sarve saptarṣayo 'malāḥ
Rajas, Gotra, Urdhvabahu, Savana, Anagha, Sutapas, and Shukra — these are all the seven pure sages, the Saptarshis.
Verse 14 (vishnu.1.10.14)
yo 'sāv agnir abhimānī brahmaṇas tanayo 'grajaḥ tasmāt svāhā sutāṁl lebhe trīn udāraujaso dvija
That fire called Abhimani, the eldest son of Brahma — from him his wife Svaha obtained three sons of great splendor, O twice-born:
Verse 15 (vishnu.1.10.15)
pāvakaṁ pavamānaṁ ca śuciṁ cāpi jalāśinam
Pavaka, Pavamana, and Shuchi, who drinks up the waters.
Verse 16 (vishnu.1.10.16)
teṣāṁ tu saṁtatāv anye catvāriṁśac ca pañca ca kathyante vahnayaś caite pitā putratrayaṁ ca yat
In their line came forty-five other fires besides; these, together with the father and his three sons, are all reckoned as the fires.
Verse 17 (vishnu.1.10.17)
evam ekonapañcāśad vahnayaḥ parikīrtitāḥ
Thus forty-nine fires in all are celebrated.
Verse 18 (vishnu.1.10.18)
pitaro brahmaṇā sṛṣṭā vyākhyātā ye mayā tava agniṣvāttā barhiṣado 'nagnayaḥ sāgnayaś ca ye
The Pitris, created by Brahma, whom I have explained to you — the Agnishvattas, the Barhishads, those without fire and those with fire.
Verse 19 (vishnu.1.10.19)
tebhyaḥ svadhā sute jajñe menāṁ vai dhāriṇīṁ tathā te ubhe brahmavādinyau yoginyau cāpy ubhe dvija
From them, to Svadha, was born a daughter, Mena, also called Dharini; both of these, O twice-born, are speakers of Brahman and also yoginis,
Verse 20 (vishnu.1.10.20)
uttamajñānasaṁpanne sarvaiḥ samuditair guṇaiḥ
endowed with the highest knowledge, and united with the fullness of every virtue.
Verse 21 (vishnu.1.10.21)
ity eṣā dakṣakanyānāṁ kathitāpatyasaṁtatiḥ śraddhāvān saṁsmarann etām anapatyo na jāyate
Thus has this lineage of the progeny of Daksha's daughters been told; whoever, full of faith, calls it to mind is not born without offspring.
