Amsa 1 · Chapter 9
The Curse of Durvasas and the Churning of the Ocean
Verse 1 (vishnu.1.9.1)
śrīparāśara uvāca idaṁ ca śṛṇu maitreya yat pṛṣṭo 'ham iha tvayā śrīsaṁbaddhaṁ mayāpy etac śrutam āsīn marīcitaḥ
Shri Parashara said: Hear this too, Maitreya, of what you have asked me here; this account, connected with Shri, I heard long ago from Marichi.
Verse 2 (vishnu.1.9.2)
durvāsāḥ śaṁkarasyāṁśaś cacāra pṛthivīm imām sa dadarśa srajaṁ divyām ṛṣir vidyādharīkare
Durvasas, a portion of Shankara, was wandering over this earth; that sage saw in the hand of a Vidyadhari a divine garland.
Verse 3 (vishnu.1.9.3)
saṁtānakānām akhilaṁ yasyā gandhena vāsitam atisevyam abhūd brahman tad vanaṁ vanacāriṇām
That forest, wholly scented with the fragrance of celestial Santanaka flowers of which the garland was woven, had become a favored haunt of forest-dwellers, O brahmin.
Verse 4 (vishnu.1.9.4)
unmattavratadhṛg vipraḥ sa dṛṣṭvā śobhanāṁ srajam tāṁ yayāce varārohāṁ vidyādharavadhūṁ tataḥ
That brahmin, observing the vow of a madman, on seeing that lovely garland, begged it of the graceful Vidyadhara maiden.
Verse 5 (vishnu.1.9.5)
yācitā tena tanvaṅgī mālāṁ vidyādharāṅganā dadau tasmai viśālākṣī sādaraṁ praṇipatya tam
Thus entreated, that slender, wide-eyed Vidyadhara maiden bowed respectfully and gave it to him.
Verse 6 (vishnu.1.9.6)
tām ādāyātmano mūrdhni srajam unmattarūpadhṛk kṛtvā sa vipro maitreya paribabhrāma medinīm
Taking that garland and, still in his madman's form, placing it on his own head, that brahmin, O Maitreya, wandered over the earth.
Verse 7 (vishnu.1.9.7)
sa dadarśa samāyāntam unmattairāvatasthitam trailokyādhipatiṁ devaṁ saha devaiḥ śacīpatim
He saw the lord of the three worlds approaching, mounted upon the maddened Airavata, that god together with the other gods — Shachi's husband, Indra.
Verse 8 (vishnu.1.9.8)
tām ātmanaḥ sa śirasaḥ srajam unmattaṣaṭpadām ādāyāmararājāya cikṣeponmattavan muniḥ
Taking from his own head that garland, swarming with intoxicated bees, the sage, still behaving like a madman, flung it toward the king of the immortals.
Verse 9 (vishnu.1.9.9)
gṛhītvāmararājena srag airāvatamūrdhani nyastā rarāja kailāsaśikhare jāhnavī yathā
Taken up by the king of the immortals and placed upon Airavata's head, it shone there as the Ganga shines upon the peak of Kailasa.
Verse 10 (vishnu.1.9.10)
madāndhakāritākṣo 'sau gandhākṛṣṭena vāraṇaḥ kareṇāghrāya cikṣepa tāṁ srajaṁ dharaṇītale
That elephant, its eyes blinded by rut and drawn by the fragrance, seized the garland with its trunk and cast it down upon the ground.
Verse 11 (vishnu.1.9.11)
tataś cukrodha bhagavān durvāsā munisattamaḥ maitreya devarājānaṁ kruddhaś caitad uvāca ha
Then the illustrious Durvasas, foremost among sages, grew furious, O Maitreya, and in his anger spoke thus to the king of the gods.
Verse 12 (vishnu.1.9.12)
śrīdurvāsā uvāca aiśvaryamadaduṣṭātmann atistabdho 'si vāsava śriyo dhāma srajaṁ yas tvaṁ maddattāṁ nābhinandasi
Durvasas said: Maddened by your power, O Vasava, you have grown utterly arrogant, that you do not honor this garland — the very abode of Shri — which I gave you.
Verse 13 (vishnu.1.9.13)
You did not bow before me and say 'be gracious,' nor did you hold it upon your head with cheeks flushed in joy.
Verse 14 (vishnu.1.9.14)
mayā dattām imāṁ mālāṁ yasmān na bahu manyase trailokyaśrīr ato mūḍha vināśam upayāsyati
Because you have shown no great regard for this garland I gave you, therefore, O fool, the fortune of the three worlds shall meet its ruin.
Verse 15 (vishnu.1.9.15)
māṁ manyate 'nyaiḥ sadṛśaṁ nūnaṁ śakra bhavān dvijaiḥ ato 'vamānam asmāsu māninā bhavatā kṛtam
You think me, O Shakra, no different from other brahmins — surely this insult to me has been done by you out of pride.
Verse 16 (vishnu.1.9.16)
maddattā bhavatā yasmāt kṣiptā mālā mahītale tasmāt praṇaṣṭalakṣmīkaṁ trailokyaṁ te bhaviṣyati
Because the garland I gave has been thrown down by you upon the earth, therefore the three worlds shall become destitute of their fortune.
Verse 17 (vishnu.1.9.17)
yasya saṁjātakopasya bhayam eti carācaram taṁ tvaṁ mām atigarveṇa devarājāvamanyase
He whose wrath, once kindled, is feared by all moving and unmoving beings — that very me, O king of the gods, you disregard in your excessive pride.
Verse 18 (vishnu.1.9.18)
śrīparāśara uvāca mahendro vāraṇaskandhād avatīrya tvarānvitaḥ prasādayām āsa muniṁ durvāsasam akalmaṣam
Parashara said: Mahendra, quickly descending from the shoulder of his elephant, sought to appease the sage Durvasas, sinless though he was.
Verse 19 (vishnu.1.9.19)
prasādyamānaḥ sa tadā praṇipātapuraḥsaram pratyuvāca sahasrākṣaṁ durvāsā munisattamaḥ
Thus entreated with bows before him, the great sage Durvasas answered the thousand-eyed one, Indra.
Verse 20 (vishnu.1.9.20)
śrīdurvāsā uvāca nāhaṁ kṛpāluhṛdayo na ca māṁ bhajate kṣamā anye te munayaḥ śakra durvāsasam avehi mām
Durvasas said: My heart is not tender, nor does forgiveness abide in me; know me, O Shakra, to be unlike other sages — know me as Durvasas indeed.
Verse 21 (vishnu.1.9.21)
gautamādibhir anyais tvaṁ garvam āpādito mudhā akṣāntisārasarvasvaṁ durvāsasam avehi mām
By Gautama and other sages you have been made vainly proud; know me as Durvasas, whose whole substance is unforgiving wrath itself.
Verse 22 (vishnu.1.9.22)
vasiṣṭhādyair dayāsāraiḥ stotraṁ kurvadbhir uccakaiḥ garvaṁ gato 'si yenaivaṁ mām apy adyāvamanyase
Praised aloud by the merciful hymns of Vasishtha and others, you have grown so proud that you now disregard even me in this manner.
Verse 23 (vishnu.1.9.23)
jvalajjaṭākalāpasya bhṛkuṭīkuṭilaṁ mukham nirīkṣya kas tribhuvane mama yo na gato bhayam
Beholding my face, fierce with knitted brows amid blazing matted hair, who in the three worlds has not been struck with fear?
Verse 24 (vishnu.1.9.24)
nāhaṁ kṣamiṣye bahunā kim uktena śatakrato viḍambanām imāṁ bhūyaḥ karoṣy anunayātmikām
I shall not forgive — what more is there to say, O Shatakratu? You shall again go through this same humbling, full of entreaty.
Verse 25 (vishnu.1.9.25)
śrīparāśara uvāca ity uktvā prayayau vipro devarājo 'pi taṁ punaḥ āruhyairāvataṁ brahman prayayāv amarāvatīm
Parashara said: Having spoken thus, the sage departed; and the king of the gods too, mounting Airavata, O brahmin, set out again for Amaravati.
Verse 26 (vishnu.1.9.26)
tataḥprabhṛti niḥśrīkaṁ saśakraṁ bhuvanatrayam maitreyāsīd apadhvastaṁ saṁkṣīṇauṣadhivīrudham
From that time on, the three worlds together with Shakra, O Maitreya, became bereft of Shri, fell into ruin, and their herbs and plants withered away.
Verse 27 (vishnu.1.9.27)
na yajñāḥ saṁpravartante na tapasyanti tāpasāḥ na ca dānādidharmeṣu manaś cakre tadā janaḥ
Sacrifices ceased to be performed, ascetics no longer practiced austerity, and people set their minds no longer on charity and the other virtues.
Verse 28 (vishnu.1.9.28)
niḥsattvāḥ sakalā lokā lobhādyupahatendriyāḥ svalpe 'pi hi babhūvus te sābhilāṣā dvijottama
All the worlds, drained of their vitality, their senses overpowered by greed, grew covetous even of trifling things, O best of brahmins.
Verse 29 (vishnu.1.9.29)
yataḥ sattvaṁ tato lakṣmīḥ sattvaṁ bhūtyanusāri ca niḥśrīkāṇāṁ kutaḥ sattvaṁ vinā tena guṇāḥ kutaḥ
Where there is vigor, there is Lakshmi; vigor follows prosperity — for those without fortune, where is vigor to be found? And without it, where are virtues?
Verse 30 (vishnu.1.9.30)
balaśauryādyabhāvaś ca puruṣāṇāṁ guṇair vinā laṅghanīyaḥ samastasya balaśauryavivarjitaḥ bhavaty apadhvastamatir laṅghitaḥ prathitaḥ pumān
And without virtue, strength and valor and the like fail in men; one devoid of strength and valor becomes fit to be scorned by all. His understanding grows shattered, and, held in contempt, he becomes notorious.
Verse 31 (vishnu.1.9.31)
evam atyantaniḥśrīke trailokye sattvavarjite devān prati balodyogaṁ cakrur daiteyadānavāḥ
Thus, when the three worlds, utterly stripped of Shri, were left without vigor, the Daityas and Danavas launched a mighty assault of force against the gods.
Verse 32 (vishnu.1.9.32)
lobhābhibhūtā niḥśrīkā daityāḥ sattvavivarjitāḥ śriyā vihīnair niḥsattvair devaiś cakrus tato raṇam
Overpowered by greed, stripped of fortune, devoid of vigor, the Daityas made war then upon the gods, who, themselves deprived of Shri, lacked strength.
Verse 33 (vishnu.1.9.33)
vijitās tridaśā daityair indrādyāḥ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ pitāmahaṁ mahābhāgaṁ hutāśanapurogamāḥ
Vanquished by the Daityas, the gods, led by Indra, with Agni foremost, went for refuge to the great and blessed Grandsire, Brahma.
Verse 34 (vishnu.1.9.34)
yathāvat kathito devair brahmā prāha tataḥ surān parāvareśaṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajadhvam asurārdanam
When the gods had duly related everything, Brahma then said to them: Go for refuge to the lord of the higher and the lower, the tormentor of Asuras—
Verse 35 (vishnu.1.9.35)
utpattisthitināśānām ahetuṁ hetum īśvaram prajāpatipatiṁ viṣṇum anantam aparājitam
to the causeless cause of origination, preservation, and destruction, the sovereign over the lords of creatures, Vishnu, infinite and unconquered,
Verse 36 (vishnu.1.9.36)
pradhānapuṁsor ajayoḥ kāraṇaṁ kāryabhūtayoḥ praṇatārtiharaṁ viṣṇuṁ sa vaḥ śreyo vidhāsyati
the cause of Pradhana and Purusha, both effect and cause together, Vishnu, who removes the affliction of those who bow before him — he alone shall grant you your good.
Verse 37 (vishnu.1.9.37)
śrīparāśara uvāca evam uktvā surān sarvān brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ kṣīrodasyottaraṁ tīraṁ tair eva sahito yayau
Parashara said: Having spoken thus to all the gods, Brahma, grandsire of the worlds, went together with them to the northern shore of the Ocean of Milk.
Verse 38 (vishnu.1.9.38)
sa gatvā tridaśaiḥ sarvaiḥ samavetaḥ pitāmahaḥ tuṣṭāva vāgbhir iṣṭābhiḥ parāvarapatiṁ harim
Having gone there, the Grandsire, together with all the assembled gods, praised Hari, lord of the higher and lower, with cherished words of praise.
Verse 39 (vishnu.1.9.39)
śrībrahmovāca namāmi sarvaṁ sarveśam anantam ajam avyayam lokadhāmadharādhāram aprakāśam abhedinam
Shri Brahma said: I bow to him who is the all, lord of all, endless, unborn, undying — the dwelling-place and support of the worlds, unmanifest and indivisible;
Verse 40 (vishnu.1.9.40)
nārāyaṇam aṇīyāṁsam aśeṣāṇām aṇīyasām samastānāṁ gariṣṭhaṁ ca bhūrādīnāṁ garīyasām
to Narayana, subtler than the subtlest of the subtle, and greater than the greatest of all things, of earth and the rest.
Verse 41 (vishnu.1.9.41)
yatra sarvaṁ yataḥ sarvam utpannaṁ matpuraḥsaram sarvabhūtaś ca yo devaḥ parāṇām api yaḥ paraḥ
In whom all things abide, from whom all has sprung with even me at its head — who is the very self of all beings, and who stands beyond even the highest.
Verse 42 (vishnu.1.9.42)
paraḥ parasmāt puruṣāt paramātmasvarūpadhṛk yogibhiś cintyate yo 'sau muktihetor mumukṣubhiḥ
Beyond the highest Purusha, bearing the very form of the Supreme Self, whom yogis seeking liberation contemplate as the cause of release.
Verse 43 (vishnu.1.9.43)
In whom, the Lord, sattva and the other gunas born of Prakriti have no place — may that being, pure beyond all the pure, the primal one, be gracious to us.
Verse 44 (vishnu.1.9.44)
kalākāṣṭhānimeṣādi kālasūtrasya gocare yasya śaktir na śuddhasya prasīdatu sa no hariḥ
Whose power, itself pure, does not fall within the grasp of Time's thread — kala, kashtha, nimesha and the rest — may that Hari be gracious to us.
Verse 45 (vishnu.1.9.45)
procyate parameśo hi yaḥ śuddho 'py upacārataḥ prasīdatu sa no viṣṇur ātmā yaḥ sarvadehinām
He who, though pure, is called the Supreme Lord only in a figurative sense — may that Vishnu, the self of all embodied beings, be gracious to us.
Verse 46 (vishnu.1.9.46)
yaḥ kāraṇaṁ ca kāryaṁ ca kāraṇasyāpi kāraṇam kāryasyāpi ca yaḥ kāryaṁ prasīdatu sa no hariḥ
He who is cause and effect both, the cause of the cause itself, and the effect of the effect itself — may that Hari be gracious to us.
Verse 47 (vishnu.1.9.47)
kāryakāryasya yat kāryaṁ tatkāryasyāpi yaḥ svayam tatkāryakāryabhūto yas tataś ca praṇato 'smi tam
Who is the effect of the effect's effect, and who himself becomes that further effect of that effect — to him, in that form which is the effect of the effect of the effect, I bow.
Verse 48 (vishnu.1.9.48)
kāraṇaṁ kāraṇasyāpi tasya kāraṇakāraṇam tatkāraṇānāṁ hetuṁ taṁ praṇato 'smi sureśvaram
To the cause of the cause, the cause of that cause's cause, the source of all such causes — to that lord of the gods I bow.
Verse 49 (vishnu.1.9.49)
bhoktāraṁ bhojyabhūtaṁ ca sraṣṭāraṁ sṛjyam eva ca kāryakartṛsvarūpaṁ taṁ praṇato 'smi paraṁ padam
To him who is both enjoyer and the very thing enjoyed, both creator and created, whose form is action and agent alike — to that supreme state I bow.
Verse 50 (vishnu.1.9.50)
viśuddhabodhavan nityam ajam akṣayam avyayam avyaktam avikāraṁ yat tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam
That which is ever of the nature of pure consciousness — unborn, imperishable, undying, unmanifest, unchanging — that is Vishnu's supreme state.
Verse 51 (vishnu.1.9.51)
na sthūlaṁ na ca sūkṣmaṁ yan na viśeṣaṇagocaram tat padaṁ paramaṁ viṣṇoḥ praṇamāmi sadāmalam
That which is neither gross nor subtle, which lies beyond the reach of any defining attribute — to that supreme, ever-stainless state of Vishnu I bow.
Verse 52 (vishnu.1.9.52)
yasyāyutāyutāṁśāṁśe viśvaśaktir iyaṁ sthitā parabrahmasvarūpasya praṇamāmi tam avyayam
In the merest fraction of whose infinitesimal fraction this whole power of the universe resides — to that undying one, of the very nature of the Supreme Brahman, I bow.
Verse 53 (vishnu.1.9.53)
yan na devā na munayo na cāhaṁ na ca śaṁkaraḥ jānanti parameśasya tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam
That which neither the gods know, nor the sages, nor I myself, nor even Shankara — that is the supreme state of the Supreme Lord, Vishnu.
Verse 54 (vishnu.1.9.54)
yad yoginaḥ sadodyuktāḥ puṇyapāpakṣaye 'kṣayam paśyanti praṇave cintyaṁ tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam
That which yogis, ever diligent, behold as imperishable once merit and sin are exhausted, to be contemplated in the syllable Om — that is Vishnu's supreme state.
Verse 55 (vishnu.1.9.55)
śaktayo yasya devasya brahmaviṣṇuśivātmikāḥ bhavanty abhūtapūrvasya tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam
Of that god whose powers, unprecedented as they are, take on the forms of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — that is Vishnu's supreme state.
Verse 56 (vishnu.1.9.56)
sarveśa sarvabhūtātman sarva sarvāśrayācyuta prasīda viṣṇo bhaktānāṁ vraja no dṛṣṭigocaram
O lord of all, self of all beings, refuge of all, O undying one — be gracious, O Vishnu; come within the sight of your devotees.
Verse 57 (vishnu.1.9.57)
śrīparāśara uvāca ity udīritam ākarṇya brahmaṇas tridaśās tataḥ praṇamyocuḥ prasīdeti vraja no dṛṣṭigocaram
Parashara said: Hearing this spoken by Brahma, the gods then bowed and said, 'Be gracious! Come within the sight of us.'
Verse 58 (vishnu.1.9.58)
yan nāyaṁ bhagavān brahmā jānāti paramaṁ padam taṁ natāḥ smo jagaddhāma tava sarvagatācyuta
To him whose supreme state even this lord Brahma does not know, we bow — O dwelling of the universe, all-pervading, undying one.
Verse 59 (vishnu.1.9.59)
ity ante vacasas teṣāṁ devānāṁ brahmaṇas tathā ūcur devarṣayaḥ sarve bṛhaspatipurogamāḥ
At the close of this speech of the gods and of Brahma, all the celestial sages, led by Brihaspati, then spoke.
Verse 60 (vishnu.1.9.60)

ādyo yajñaḥ pumān īḍyo yaḥ pūrveṣāṁ ca pūrvajaḥ taṁ natāḥ smo jagatsraṣṭuḥ sraṣṭāram aviśeṣaṇam
To him, the primal sacrifice, the worshipful one, who is before even the first of the ancients, the maker of the maker of the world, undivided in nature, we bow.
Verse 61 (vishnu.1.9.61)
bhagavan bhūtabhavyeśa yajñamūrtidharāvyaya prasīda praṇatānāṁ tvaṁ sarveṣāṁ dehi darśanam
O blessed lord, ruler of past and future, bearer of the form of sacrifice, undying one — be gracious to those who bow, and grant your sight to all.

Here is Brahma, and here too, with the Rudras, is the three-eyed one (Shiva); here is Pushan with all the Adityas, here Agni together with all the fires;
Verse 63 (vishnu.1.9.63)
aśvinau vasavaś ceme sarve caite marudgaṇāḥ sādhyā viśve tathā devā devendraś cāyam īśvaraḥ
the two Ashvins, these Vasus, and all these hosts of the Maruts; the Sadhyas, the Vishvedevas, and this lord Devendra too.
Verse 64 (vishnu.1.9.64)
praṇāmapravaṇā nātha daityasainyaparājitāḥ śaraṇaṁ tvām anuprāptāḥ samastā devatāgaṇāḥ
Bowed low before you in reverence, O lord, all these hosts of gods, defeated by the Daitya armies, have come to you for refuge.
Verse 65 (vishnu.1.9.65)
śrīparāśara uvāca evaṁ saṁstūyamānas tu bhagavāñ chaṅkhacakradhṛk jagāma darśanaṁ teṣāṁ maitreya parameśvaraḥ
Parashara said: Thus praised, the blessed one, bearing conch, discus, and mace, O Maitreya, the Supreme Lord, appeared before them to grant his sight.
Verse 66 (vishnu.1.9.66)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā te tadā devāḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharam apūrvarūpasaṁsthānaṁ tejasāṁ rāśim ūrjitam
Beholding him then, bearing conch, discus, and mace, of unprecedented form, a mighty mass of radiance, the gods,
Verse 67 (vishnu.1.9.67)
praṇamya praṇatāḥ pūrvaṁ saṁkṣobhastimitekṣaṇāḥ tuṣṭuvuḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ pitāmahapurogamāḥ
bowing first in homage, their eyes stilled in wonder, praised the lotus-eyed one, with the Grandsire foremost among them.
Verse 68 (vishnu.1.9.68)
devā ūcuḥ namo namas te viśveśa tvaṁ brahmā tvaṁ pinākadhṛk indras tvam agniḥ pavano varuṇaḥ savitā yamaḥ vasavo marutaḥ sādhyā viśvedevagaṇā bhavān
The gods said: Salutation upon salutation to you, O lord of the universe! You are Brahma, you the wielder of the Pinaka; you are Indra, Agni, the wind-god, Varuna, Savitri, Yama; you are the Vasus, the Maruts, the Sadhyas — you are all the host of Vishvedevas.
Verse 69 (vishnu.1.9.69)
yo 'yaṁ tavāgato deva samīpaṁ devatāgaṇaḥ sa tvam eva jagatsraṣṭā yataḥ sarvagato bhavān
This host of gods now come into your presence, O god — you yourself are the creator of the world, since you, O lord, pervade all things.
Verse 70 (vishnu.1.9.70)
tvaṁ yajñas tvaṁ vaṣaṭkāras tvam oṅkāraḥ prajāpatiḥ vettā vedyaṁ ca sarvātmaṁs tvanmayaṁ cākhilaṁ jagat
You are the sacrifice, you the exclamation Vashat, you the syllable Om, the lord of creatures; knower and known both, O self of all — this whole world is made of you.
Verse 71 (vishnu.1.9.71)
tvām ārtāḥ śaraṇaṁ viṣṇo prayātā daityanirjitāḥ vayaṁ prasīda sarvātmaṁs tejasāpyāyayasva naḥ
In distress, defeated by the Daityas, we have come to you, O Vishnu, for refuge; be gracious, O self of all; fill us again with your radiance.
Verse 72 (vishnu.1.9.72)
tāvad ārtis tathā vāñchā tāvan mohas tathāsukham yāvan nāyāti śaraṇaṁ tvām aśeṣāghanāśanam
So long does distress last, so long desire, so long delusion and its false happiness, as one does not take refuge in you, the destroyer of every sin.
Verse 73 (vishnu.1.9.73)
tvaṁ prasādaṁ prasannātman prapannānāṁ kuruṣva naḥ tejasāṁ nātha sarveṣāṁ svaśaktyāpyāyanaṁ kuru
O gracious-souled one, grant your grace to us who have taken refuge; O lord, replenish all our radiance again with your own power.
Verse 74 (vishnu.1.9.74)
śrīparāśara uvāca evaṁ saṁstūyamānas tu praṇatair amarair hariḥ prasannadṛṣṭir bhagavān idam āha sa viśvakṛt
Parashara said: Thus praised by the bowing immortals, Hari, maker of the universe, his gaze full of grace, the blessed lord spoke as follows.
Verse 75 (vishnu.1.9.75)
śrībhagavān uvāca tejaso bhavatāṁ devāḥ kariṣyāmy upabṛṁhaṇam vadāmy ahaṁ yat kriyatāṁ bhavadbhis tad idaṁ surāḥ
Shri Bhagavan said: O gods, I shall bring about the augmentation of your radiance; hear what I say, and let this very thing be done by you, O gods:
Verse 76 (vishnu.1.9.76)
ānīya sahitā daityaiḥ kṣīrābdhau sakalauṣadhīḥ manthānaṁ mandaraṁ kṛtvā netraṁ kṛtvā tu vāsukim mathyatām amṛtaṁ devāḥ sahāye mayy avasthite
Bring together with the Daityas all the herbs into the Ocean of Milk; making Mount Mandara the churning-stick and Vasuki the cord, churn out the nectar, O gods, while I stand there as your helper.
Verse 77 (vishnu.1.9.77)
sāmapūrvaṁ ca daiteyās tatra sāhāyyakarmaṇi sāmānyaphalabhoktāro yūyaṁ vācyā bhaviṣyatha
In that task of assistance, speaking first to the sons of Diti with conciliating words, you must tell them that they too shall share equally in the fruit.
Verse 78 (vishnu.1.9.78)
mathyamāne ca tatrābdhau yat samutpadyate 'mṛtam tatpānād balino yūyam amarāś ca bhaviṣyatha
And when the nectar arises there from the churning of that ocean, by drinking it you shall become strong and immortal.
Verse 79 (vishnu.1.9.79)
And I shall so arrange it that your enemies, the foes of the gods, shall not obtain the nectar, but shall gain only weariness as their share.
Verse 80 (vishnu.1.9.80)
śrīparāśara uvāca ity uktā devadevena sarva eva tataḥ surāḥ saṁdhānam asuraiḥ kṛtvā yatnavanto 'mṛte 'bhavan
Parashara said: Thus told by the god of gods, all the gods then made peace with the Asuras and applied themselves diligently to the work of the nectar.
Verse 81 (vishnu.1.9.81)
nānauṣadhīḥ samānīya devadaiteyadānavāḥ kṣiptvā kṣīrābdhipayasi śaradabhrāmalatviṣi
Gods, Daityas, and Danavas together gathered every kind of herb and cast them into the waters of the Ocean of Milk, bright as the clouds of autumn.
Verse 82 (vishnu.1.9.82)
manthānaṁ mandaraṁ kṛtvā netraṁ kṛtvā ca vāsukim tato mathitum ārabdhā maitreya tarasāmṛtam
Making Mount Mandara the churning-rod and Vasuki the cord, they then began, O Maitreya, swiftly to churn out the nectar.
Verse 83 (vishnu.1.9.83)
vibudhāḥ sahitāḥ sarve yataḥ pucchaṁ tataḥ kṛtāḥ kṛṣṇena vāsuker daityāḥ pūrvakāye niveśitāḥ
All the gods together took hold at the tail; the Daityas, by Krishna's arrangement, were placed at the forepart of Vasuki's body.
Verse 84 (vishnu.1.9.84)
te tasya phaṇaniḥśvāsavahnināpahatatviṣaḥ nistejaso 'surāḥ sarve babhūvur amitadyute
Scorched by the fiery breath from the hoods of the serpent, their luster stripped away, all the Asuras, though of boundless splendor, became devoid of vigor.
Verse 85 (vishnu.1.9.85)
tenaiva mukhaniḥśvāsavāyunāstabalāhakaiḥ pucchapradeśe varṣadbhis tadā cāpyāyitāḥ surāḥ
But by that very breath from his mouth, like rain-bearing clouds, the gods stationed at the tail-end were refreshed and revived.
Verse 86 (vishnu.1.9.86)
kṣīrodamadhye bhagavān kūrmarūpī svayaṁ hariḥ mandarādrer adhiṣṭhānaṁ bhramato 'bhūn mahāmune
In the midst of the Ocean of Milk, the blessed Hari himself, taking the form of a tortoise, became the support beneath Mount Mandara as it revolved, O great sage.
Verse 87 (vishnu.1.9.87)
rūpeṇānyena devānāṁ madhye cakragadādharaḥ cakarṣa nāgarājānaṁ daityamadhye 'pareṇa ca
In another form, amid the gods, bearing discus and mace, he pulled the king of serpents; and in yet another form, amid the Daityas, he did likewise.
Verse 88 (vishnu.1.9.88)
upary ākrāntavāñ chailaṁ bṛhadrūpeṇa keśavaḥ tathāpareṇa maitreya yan na dṛṣṭaṁ surāsuraiḥ
Keshava, in an immense form, climbed atop the mountain and bore down upon it; and yet in another form too, O Maitreya, one seen neither by gods nor by Asuras.
Verse 89 (vishnu.1.9.89)
tejasā nāgarājānaṁ tathāpyāyitavān hariḥ anyena tejasā devān upabṛṁhitavān vibhuḥ
By his own radiance he refreshed the king of serpents, and by another radiance the Lord invigorated the gods.
Verse 90 (vishnu.1.9.90)
mathyamāne tatas tasmin kṣīrābdhau devadānavaiḥ havirdhāmābhavat pūrvaṁ surabhiḥ surapūjitā
Then, as that Ocean of Milk was churned by gods and Danavas, there first arose the vessel of sacrificial offering, Surabhi, worshipped by the gods.
Verse 91 (vishnu.1.9.91)
jagmur mudaṁ tato devā dānavāś ca mahāmune vyākṣiptacetasaś caiva babhūvuḥ stimitekṣaṇāḥ
The gods and Danavas, O great sage, were filled then with joy; but their minds grew distracted, and their gaze became fixed and still.
Verse 92 (vishnu.1.9.92)
kim etad iti siddhānāṁ divi cintayatāṁ tataḥ babhūva vāruṇī devī madāghūrṇitalocanā
As those perfected beings wondered, 'What is this?', there then arose in heaven the goddess Varuni, her eyes rolling in intoxication.
Verse 93 (vishnu.1.9.93)
kṛtāvartāt tatas tasmāt kṣīrodād vāsayañ jagat gandhena pārijāto 'bhūd devastrīnandanas taruḥ
Then, from that churned Ocean of Milk, scenting the world, there arose from that whirlpool the Parijata tree, delight of the celestial women.
Verse 94 (vishnu.1.9.94)
rūpaudāryaguṇopetas tataś cāpsarasāṁ gaṇaḥ kṣīrodadheḥ samutpanno maitreya paramādbhutaḥ
Then too, endowed with beauty and nobility of every quality, the host of Apsarases, O Maitreya, arose from the Ocean of Milk — a most wondrous thing.
Verse 95 (vishnu.1.9.95)
tataḥ śītāṁśur abhavaj jagṛhe taṁ maheśvaraḥ jagṛhuś ca viṣaṁ nāgāḥ kṣīrodābdhisamutthitam
Then arose the cool-rayed moon, whom Maheshvara took up; and the serpents took up the poison that rose from the Ocean of Milk.
Verse 96 (vishnu.1.9.96)
tato dhanvantarir devaḥ śvetāmbaradharaḥ svayam bibhratkamaṇḍaluṁ pūrṇam amṛtasya samutthitaḥ
Then the god Dhanvantari himself arose, clad in white garments, bearing a vessel filled with nectar in his hands.
Verse 97 (vishnu.1.9.97)
tataḥ svasthamanaskās te sarve daiteyadānavāḥ babhūvur muditāḥ sadyo maitreya munibhiḥ saha
Then, their minds set at ease, all those Daityas and Danavas, O Maitreya, became joyful at once, together with the sages.
Verse 98 (vishnu.1.9.98)
tataḥ sphuratkāntimatī vikāsikamale sthitā śrīr devī payasas tasmād utthitā dhṛtapaṅkajā
Then, radiant with beauty, standing upon a blooming lotus, herself holding a lotus, the goddess Shri arose from those waters.
Verse 99 (vishnu.1.9.99)
tāṁ tuṣṭuvur mudā yuktāḥ śrīsūktena maharṣayaḥ
The great sages, filled with joy, praised her with the Shri Sukta hymn.

The Gandharvas, led by Vishvavasu, sang before her; and the Apsaras, led by Ghritachi, danced, O brahmin.
Verse 101 (vishnu.1.9.101)
gaṅgādyāḥ saritas toyaiḥ snānārtham upatasthire diggajā hemapātrastham ādāya vimalaṁ jalam snāpayāṁ cakrire devīṁ sarvalokamaheśvarīm
The Ganga and the other sacred rivers came near with their waters for her bathing; the elephants of the quarters, taking pure water in vessels of gold, bathed the goddess, sovereign mistress of all the worlds.
Verse 102 (vishnu.1.9.102)
kṣīrodo rūpadhṛk tasyai mālām amlānapaṅkajām dadau vibhūṣaṇāny aṅge viśvakarmā cakāra ha
The Ocean of Milk, assuming bodily form, gave her a garland of unfading lotuses; and Vishvakarma fashioned ornaments for her limbs.
Verse 103 (vishnu.1.9.103)
divyamālyāmbaradharā snātā bhūṣaṇabhūṣitā paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāṁ yayau vakṣaḥsthalaṁ hareḥ
Wearing divine garlands and garments, bathed and adorned with ornaments, she went, before the eyes of all the gods, to the breast of Hari.
Verse 104 (vishnu.1.9.104)
tato 'valokitā devā harivakṣaḥsthalasthayā lakṣmyā maitreya sahasā parāṁ nirvṛtim āgatāḥ
Then the gods, seeing her seated upon Hari's breast, O Maitreya, attained at once to a supreme joy.
Verse 105 (vishnu.1.9.105)
udvegaṁ paramaṁ jagmur daityā viṣṇuparāṅmukhāḥ tyaktā lakṣmyā mahābhāga vipracittipurogamāḥ
But the Daityas, turned away from Vishnu, fell into deep distress, forsaken by Lakshmi, O greatly fortunate one, with Vipracitti at their head.
Verse 106 (vishnu.1.9.106)
tatas te jagṛhur daityā dhanvantarikare sthitam kamaṇḍaluṁ mahāvīryā yatrāste tad dvijāmṛtam
Then those mighty Daityas seized that vessel of nectar for the twice-born which stood in Dhanvantari's hand.
Verse 107 (vishnu.1.9.107)

māyayā mohayitvā tān viṣṇuḥ strīrūpam āsthitaḥ dānavebhyas tad ādāya devebhyaḥ pradadau vibhuḥ
Deluding them with his magic, assuming the form of a woman, Vishnu, the mighty one, took that nectar from the Danavas and gave it to the gods.
Verse 108 (vishnu.1.9.108)
tataḥ papuḥ suragaṇāḥ śakrādyās tat tadāmṛtam udyatāyudhanistriṁśā daityās tāṁś ca samabhyayuḥ
Then the hosts of gods, led by Shakra, drank that nectar; the Daityas, raising their swords and weapons, fell upon them.

pīte 'mṛte ca balibhir devair daityacamūs tadā vadhyamānā diśo bheje pātālaṁ ca viveśa vai
But once the nectar was drunk, the now-powerful gods routed the Daitya army, which scattered to every quarter and entered Patala, the underworld.

Then the joyful gods, bowing as before to the bearer of conch, discus, and mace, took possession of that heaven once more.
Verse 111 (vishnu.1.9.111)
tataḥ prasannabhāḥ sūryaḥ prayayau svena vartmanā jyotīṁṣi ca yathāmārgaṁ prayayur munisattama
Then the sun, its brightness grown clear again, resumed its own course; and the heavenly bodies too, O foremost of sages, proceeded each along its proper path.
Verse 112 (vishnu.1.9.112)

The blessed fire blazed up loudly, its radiance most beautiful; and among all beings there arose once more a mind inclined toward dharma.

siṁhāsanagataḥ śakraḥ saṁprāpya tridivaṁ punaḥ devarājye sthito devīṁ tuṣṭāvābjakarāṁ tataḥ
Seated upon his throne, having regained heaven once more and established in the sovereignty of the gods, Shakra then praised the lotus-handed goddess.
Verse 115 (vishnu.1.9.115)

indra uvāca namasye sarvalokānāṁ jananīm abjasaṁbhavām śriyam unnidrapadmākṣīṁ viṣṇuvakṣaḥsthalasthitām
Indra said: I bow to her, born of the lotus, the mother of all the worlds — Shri, whose eyes are like an opening lotus, seated upon the breast of Vishnu.
Verse 116 (vishnu.1.9.116)
tvaṁ siddhis tvaṁ svadhā svāhā sudhā tvaṁ lokapāvanī saṁdhyā rātriḥ prabhā bhūtir medhā śraddhā sarasvatī
You are Siddhi, you are Svadha, Svaha, the nectar that purifies the worlds; you are Sandhya, Ratri, Prabha, Bhuti, Medha, Shraddha, Sarasvati.
Verse 117 (vishnu.1.9.117)
yajñavidyā mahāvidyā guhyavidyā ca śobhane ātmavidyā ca devi tvaṁ vimuktiphaladāyinī
You are the knowledge of sacrifice, the great knowledge, the secret knowledge, O gracious one; you are the knowledge of the self, O goddess, giver of the fruit of liberation.
Verse 118 (vishnu.1.9.118)
ānvīkṣikī trayī vārtā daṇḍanītis tvam eva ca saumyāsaumyair jagad rūpais tvayaitad devi pūritam
You are logic, the triple Veda, the science of livelihood, the science of statecraft; by you, O goddess, in forms both mild and fierce, this whole world is filled.
Verse 119 (vishnu.1.9.119)
kā tv anyā tvām ṛte devi sarvayajñamayaṁ vapuḥ adhyāste devadevasya yogicintyaṁ gadābhṛtaḥ
Who else but you, O goddess, is that form wholly made of sacrifice, dwelling upon the mace-bearer, the god of gods, whom yogis hold in their contemplation?
Verse 120 (vishnu.1.9.120)
tvayā devi parityaktaṁ sakalaṁ bhuvanatrayam vinaṣṭaprāyam abhavat tvayedānīṁ samedhitam
Forsaken by you, O goddess, the entire triple world had come nearly to ruin; now, made prosperous once more by you, it flourishes again.
Verse 121 (vishnu.1.9.121)
dārāḥ putrās tathāgāraṁ suhṛddhānyadhanādikam bhavaty etan mahābhāge nityaṁ tvadvīkṣaṇān nṛṇām
Wives, sons, home, kinsmen, grain and wealth and all such things — these come to men forever, O greatly blessed one, only through your gaze.
Verse 122 (vishnu.1.9.122)
śarīrārogyam aiśvaryam aripakṣakṣayaḥ sukham devi tvaddṛṣṭidṛṣṭānāṁ puruṣāṇāṁ na durlabham
Bodily health, sovereignty, the destruction of the ranks of enemies, happiness — these, O goddess, are nothing difficult for men upon whom your glance has fallen.
Verse 123 (vishnu.1.9.123)
tvaṁ mātā sarvabhūtānāṁ devadevo hariḥ pitā tvayaitad viṣṇunā cāmba jagad vyāptaṁ carācaram
You are the mother of all beings, and Hari, the god of gods, is their father; by you, O mother, together with Vishnu, this whole moving and unmoving world is pervaded.
Verse 124 (vishnu.1.9.124)
mā naḥ kośaṁ tathā goṣṭhaṁ mā gṛhaṁ mā paricchadam mā śarīraṁ kalatraṁ ca tyajethāḥ sarvapāvani
Do not forsake, O purifier of all, our treasury, nor our cattle-pens, nor our home, nor our household; do not forsake our bodies, nor our wives.
Verse 125 (vishnu.1.9.125)
mā putrān mā suhṛdvargān mā paśūn mā vibhūṣaṇam tyajethā mama devasya viṣṇor vakṣaḥsthalālaye
Do not forsake our sons, nor our circle of kinsmen, nor our herds, nor our ornaments — nor forsake me, who dwell in the shelter of my lord Vishnu's breast.
Verse 126 (vishnu.1.9.126)
sattvena satyaśaucābhyāṁ tathā śīlādibhir guṇaiḥ tyajyante te narāḥ sadyaḥ saṁtyaktā ye tvayāmale
Those men from whom you, O stainless one, have wholly withdrawn — from them sattva, truth and purity, good conduct and its kindred virtues depart at once as well.
Verse 127 (vishnu.1.9.127)
tvayāvalokitāḥ sadyaḥ śīlādyair akhilair guṇaiḥ kulaiśvaryaiś ca yujyante puruṣā nirguṇā api
Those upon whom you cast your glance, even men wholly devoid of virtue, are at once endowed with good conduct and every other quality, together with the fortune of noble lineage.
Verse 128 (vishnu.1.9.128)
sa ślāghyaḥ sa guṇī dhanyaḥ sa kulīnaḥ sa buddhimān sa śūraḥ sa ca vikrānto yas tvayā devi vīkṣitaḥ
Praiseworthy is he, virtuous, blessed, well-born, wise; heroic and valiant is he, O goddess — whoever is beheld by you.
Verse 129 (vishnu.1.9.129)
sadyo vaiguṇyam āyānti śīlādyāḥ sakalā guṇāḥ parāṅmukhī jagaddhātrī yasya tvaṁ viṣṇuvallabhe
At once all his good conduct and every virtue turns to fault, O sustainer of the world, O beloved of Vishnu, that man from whom you turn your face away.
Verse 130 (vishnu.1.9.130)
Not even the tongue of Brahma himself is able to recount your virtues; be gracious, O lotus-eyed goddess — never forsake us.
Verse 131 (vishnu.1.9.131)
śrīparāśara uvāca evaṁ śrīḥ saṁstutā samyak prāha hṛṣṭā śatakratum śṛṇvatāṁ sarvadevānāṁ sarvabhūtasthitā dvija
Parashara said: Thus duly praised, Shri, delighted, spoke to Shatakratu, in the hearing of all the gods, she who dwells within all beings, O brahmin.
Verse 132 (vishnu.1.9.132)
śrīr uvāca parituṣṭāsmi deveśa stotreṇānena te hare varaṁ vṛṇīṣva yas tv iṣṭo varadāhaṁ tavāgatā
Shri said: I am well pleased, O lord of the gods, O Hari, by this hymn of yours; ask whatever boon you wish — I have come to grant it to you.
Verse 133 (vishnu.1.9.133)
indra uvāca varadā yadi me devi varārho yadi cāpy aham trailokyaṁ na tvayā tyājyam eṣa me 'stu varaḥ paraḥ
Indra said: If you are the giver of boons, O goddess, and if I too am worthy of one, then let the three worlds never be forsaken by you — let this be my highest boon.
Verse 134 (vishnu.1.9.134)
stotreṇa yas tathaitena tvāṁ stoṣyaty abdhisaṁbhave sa tvayā na parityājyo dvitīyo 'stu varo mama
And whoever shall likewise praise you, ocean-born goddess, with this very hymn — let that one too never be forsaken by you: let this be my second boon.
Verse 135 (vishnu.1.9.135)
Shri said: O foremost of the gods, O Vasava, I shall never forsake the three worlds; pleased by your hymn and your worship, I have granted you this boon.
Verse 136 (vishnu.1.9.136)
yaś ca sāyaṁ tathā prātaḥ stotreṇānena mānavaḥ māṁ stoṣyati na tasyāhaṁ bhaviṣyāmi parāṅmukhī
And whatever man shall praise me morning and evening with this very hymn, from him I shall never turn my face away.
Verse 137 (vishnu.1.9.137)
śrīparāśara uvāca evaṁ dadau varau devī devarājāya vai purā maitreya śrīr mahābhāgā stotrārādhanatoṣitā
Parashara said: Thus of old the goddess granted these boons to the king of the gods — Shri, greatly blessed, O Maitreya, pleased by hymn and worship.
Verse 138 (vishnu.1.9.138)
bhṛgoḥ khyātyāṁ samutpannā śrīḥ pūrvam udadheḥ punaḥ devadānavayatnena prasūtāmṛtamanthane
Born as the daughter of Bhrigu's fame, Shri had earlier arisen from the ocean, brought forth by the effort of gods and Danavas in the churning for the nectar.
Verse 139 (vishnu.1.9.139)
evaṁ yadā jagatsvāmī devadevo janārdanaḥ avatāraṁ karoty eṣā tadā śrīs tatsahāyinī
Thus, whenever the lord of the world, Janardana, god of gods, assumes an incarnation, Shri becomes his companion in that very deed.
Verse 140 (vishnu.1.9.140)
punaś ca padmā saṁbhūtā ādityo 'bhūd yadā hariḥ yadā tu bhārgavo rāmas tadābhūd dharaṇī tv iyam
Again, when Hari became Aditya, she was born as Padma; and when Hari was the Bhargava, Rama (Parashurama), it was this earth that became her form.
Verse 141 (vishnu.1.9.141)
rāghavatve 'bhavat sītā rukmiṇī kṛṣṇajanmani anyeṣu cāvatāreṣu viṣṇor eṣā sahāyinī
In the Raghava incarnation she became Sita; at Krishna's birth, Rukmini; and in the other incarnations too, she is Vishnu's companion.
Verse 142 (vishnu.1.9.142)
devatve devadeheyaṁ manuṣyatve ca mānuṣī viṣṇor dehānurūpāṁ vai karoty eṣātmanas tanum
In his divinity she takes a divine body, in his humanity a human one; she fashions her own form to match the very body of Vishnu.
Verse 143 (vishnu.1.9.143)
yaś caitac chṛṇuyāj janma lakṣmyā yaś ca paṭhen naraḥ śriyo na vicyutis tasya gṛhe yāvat kulatrayam
Whoever hears of this birth of Lakshmi, and whoever recites it, from his house prosperity does not depart for three generations.
Verse 144 (vishnu.1.9.144)
paṭhyate yeṣu caiveyaṁ gṛheṣu śrīstutir mune alakṣmīḥ kalahādhārā na teṣv āste kadācana
In those houses, O sage, where this hymn of Shri is recited, misfortune — the very root of strife — never dwells at all.
Verse 145 (vishnu.1.9.145)
etat te kathitaṁ brahman yan māṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi kṣīrābdhau śrīr yathā jātā pūrvaṁ bhṛgusutā satī
This is all I have told you, O brahmin, of what you asked me — how Shri, of old, the faithful daughter of Bhrigu, was born in the Ocean of Milk.
Verse 146 (vishnu.1.9.146)
iti sakalavibhūtyavāptihetuḥ stutir iyam indramukhodgatā hi lakṣmyāḥ anudinam iha paṭhyate nṛbhir yair vasati na teṣu kadācid apy alakṣmīḥ
Thus this hymn, the cause of attaining every kind of fortune, sprung from the mouth of Indra in praise of Lakshmi, is recited here day by day; among those by whom it is recited, misfortune never dwells at all.
