Verse 1 (vishnu.1.14.1)

श्रीपराशर उवाच । पृथोः पुत्रौ महावीर्यौ जज्ञातेऽन्तर्धिवादिनौ । शिखण्डिनी हविर्धानम् अन्तर्धानाद् व्यजायत

śrīparāśara uvāca pṛthoḥ putrau mahāvīryau jajñāte 'ntardhivādinau śikhaṇḍinī havirdhānam antardhānād vyajāyata

Parashara said: To Prithu were born two sons of great valor, skilled in the mystery of vanishing; Shikhandini bore Havirdhana to Antardhana.

Verse 2 (vishnu.1.14.2)

हविर्धानात् षड् आग्नेयी धिषणाजनयत् सुतान् । प्राचीनबर्हिषं शुक्रं गयं कृष्णं वृजाजिनौ

havirdhānāt ṣaḍ āgneyī dhiṣaṇājanayat sutān prācīnabarhiṣaṁ śukraṁ gayaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ vṛjājinau

From Havirdhana, his fiery wife Dhishana bore six sons — Prachinabarhi, Shukra, Gaya, Krishna, Vraja, and Ajina.

Verse 3 (vishnu.1.14.3)

प्राचीनबर्हिर् भगवान् महान् आसीत् प्रजापतिः । हविर्धानिर् महाराजो येन संवर्धिताः प्रजाः

prācīnabarhir bhagavān mahān āsīt prajāpatiḥ havirdhānir mahārājo yena saṁvardhitāḥ prajāḥ

The blessed Prachinabarhi was a great Prajapati, son of Havirdhana, a great king by whom the subjects were nurtured and increased.

Verse 4 (vishnu.1.14.4)

प्राचीनाग्राः कुशास् तस्य पृथिव्यां विश्रुता मुने । प्राचीनबर्हिर् अभवत् ख्यातो भुवि महाबलः

prācīnāgrāḥ kuśās tasya pṛthivyāṁ viśrutā mune prācīnabarhir abhavat khyāto bhuvi mahābalaḥ

Because he spread upon the earth kusha grass with its tips pointing eastward, O sage, he became renowned on earth by the name Prachinabarhi, mighty in strength.

Verse 5 (vishnu.1.14.5)

समुद्रतनयायां तु कृतदारो महीपतिः । महतस् तपसः पारे सवर्णायां महीपतेः

samudratanayāyāṁ tu kṛtadāro mahīpatiḥ mahatas tapasaḥ pāre savarṇāyāṁ mahīpateḥ

That lord of the earth, at the end of a great austerity, took as wife Savarna, daughter of the Ocean.

Verse 6 (vishnu.1.14.6)

सवर्णाधत्त सामुद्री दश प्राचीनबर्हिषः । सर्वे प्रचेतसो नाम धनुर्वेदस्य पारगाः

savarṇādhatta sāmudrī daśa prācīnabarhiṣaḥ sarve pracetaso nāma dhanurvedasya pāragāḥ

Upon Savarna, daughter of the Ocean, Prachinabarhi begot ten sons, all known by the name Pracetas, masters of the science of the bow.

Verse 7 (vishnu.1.14.7)

अपृथग्धर्मचरणास् तेऽतप्यन्त महत् तपः । दश वर्षसहस्राणि समुद्रसलिलेशयाः

apṛthagdharmacaraṇās te 'tapyanta mahat tapaḥ daśa varṣasahasrāṇi samudrasalileśayāḥ

Following one and the same course of duty, they performed a great austerity for ten thousand years, lying submerged in the waters of the ocean.

Verse 8 (vishnu.1.14.8)

श्रीमैत्रेय उवाच । यदर्थं ते महात्मानस् तपस् तेपुर् महामुने । प्रचेतसः समुद्राम्भस्य् एतद् आख्यातुम् अर्हसि

śrīmaitreya uvāca yadarthaṁ te mahātmānas tapas tepur mahāmune pracetasaḥ samudrāmbhasy etad ākhyātum arhasi

Shri Maitreya said: O great sage, for what purpose did those great souls, the Pracetas, perform austerity in the waters of the ocean? This you should relate to me.

Verse 9 (vishnu.1.14.9)

श्रीपराशर उवाच । पित्रा प्रचेतसः प्रोक्ताः प्रजार्थम् अमितात्मना । प्रजापतिनियुक्तेन बहुमानपुरःसरम्

śrīparāśara uvāca pitrā pracetasaḥ proktāḥ prajārtham amitātmanā prajāpatiniyuktena bahumānapuraḥsaram

Shri Parashara said: The Pracetas were instructed by their father, of boundless soul, appointed as Prajapati, for the sake of their subjects, with great honor shown to them.

Verse 10 (vishnu.1.14.10)

श्रीप्राचीनबर्हिर् उवाच । ब्रह्मणा देवदेवेन समादिष्टोऽस्म्य् अहं सुताः । प्रजाः संवर्धनीयास् ते मया चोक्तं तथेति तत्

śrīprācīnabarhir uvāca brahmaṇā devadevena samādiṣṭo 'smy ahaṁ sutāḥ prajāḥ saṁvardhanīyās te mayā coktaṁ tatheti tat

Shri Prachinabarhi said: 'My sons, I have been commanded by Brahma, god of gods — you must bring about the increase of the subjects — and I said to him, so be it.'

Verse 11 (vishnu.1.14.11)

तन् मम प्रीतये पुत्राः प्रजावृद्धिम् अतन्द्रिताः । कुरुध्वं माननीया च सम्यग् आज्ञा प्रजापतेः

tan mama prītaye putrāḥ prajāvṛddhim atandritāḥ kurudhvaṁ mānanīyā ca samyag ājñā prajāpateḥ

'Therefore, my sons, for my pleasure, tirelessly bring about the increase of the subjects; the command of the Prajapati is to be duly honored.'

Verse 12 (vishnu.1.14.12)

श्रीपराशर उवाच । ततस् ते तत् पितुः श्रुत्वा वचनं नृपनन्दनाः । तथेत्य् उक्त्वा च तं भूयः पप्रच्छुः पितरं मुने

śrīparāśara uvāca tatas te tat pituḥ śrutvā vacanaṁ nṛpanandanāḥ tathety uktvā ca taṁ bhūyaḥ papracchuḥ pitaraṁ mune

Parashara said: Then, hearing this word of their father, those sons of the king, saying 'so be it,' asked their father further, O sage.

Verse 13 (vishnu.1.14.13)

प्रचेतस ऊचुः । येन तात प्रजावृद्धौ समर्थाः कर्मणा वयम् । भवेम तत् समस्तं नः कर्म व्याख्यातुम् अर्हसि

pracetasa ūcuḥ yena tāta prajāvṛddhau samarthāḥ karmaṇā vayam bhavema tat samastaṁ naḥ karma vyākhyātum arhasi

The Pracetas said: 'Father, by what action might we become capable of increasing our subjects — please explain to us that entire course of action.'

Verse 14 (vishnu.1.14.14)

पितोवाच । आराध्य वरदं विष्णुम् इष्टप्राप्तिम् असंशयम् । समेति नान्यथा मर्त्यः किम् अन्यत् कथयामि वः

pitovāca ārādhya varadaṁ viṣṇum iṣṭaprāptim asaṁśayam sameti nānyathā martyaḥ kim anyat kathayāmi vaḥ

The father said: 'By worshipping the boon-granting Vishnu, a mortal, without doubt, attains what he desires — not otherwise; what else shall I tell you?'

Verse 15 (vishnu.1.14.15)

तस्मात् प्रजाविवृद्ध्यर्थं सर्वभूतप्रभुं हरिम् । आराधयत गोविन्दं यदि सिद्धिम् अभीप्सथ

tasmāt prajāvivṛddhyarthaṁ sarvabhūtaprabhuṁ harim ārādhayata govindaṁ yadi siddhim abhīpsatha

'Therefore, for the increase of your offspring, worship Hari, lord of all beings; worship Govinda, if you desire success.'

Verse 16 (vishnu.1.14.16)

धर्मम् अर्थं च कामं च मोक्षं चान्विच्छता सदा । आराधनीयो भगवान् अनादिः पुरुषोत्तमः

dharmam arthaṁ ca kāmaṁ ca mokṣaṁ cānvicchatā sadā ārādhanīyo bhagavān anādiḥ puruṣottamaḥ

'For one who ever seeks after dharma, artha, kama, and moksha, that beginningless, Supreme Person, the blessed lord, alone is to be worshipped.'

Verse 17 (vishnu.1.14.17)

यस्मिन्न् आराधिते सर्गं चकारादौ प्रजापतिः । तम् आराध्याच्युतं वृद्धिः प्रजानां वो भविष्यति

yasminn ārādhite sargaṁ cakārādau prajāpatiḥ tam ārādhyācyutaṁ vṛddhiḥ prajānāṁ vo bhaviṣyati

'He, by worshipping whom the Prajapati brought about creation at its very beginning — worship that Undying One, and the increase of your subjects shall be yours.'

Verse 18 (vishnu.1.14.18)

श्रीपराशर उवाच । इत्य् एवम् उक्तास् ते पित्रा पुत्राः प्रचेतसो दश । मग्नाः पयोधिसलिले तपस् तेपुः समाहिताः

śrīparāśara uvāca ity evam uktās te pitrā putrāḥ pracetaso daśa magnāḥ payodhisalile tapas tepuḥ samāhitāḥ

Parashara said: Thus instructed by their father, those ten sons, the Pracetas, plunging into the waters of the ocean, performed austerity with composed minds.

Verse 19 (vishnu.1.14.19)

दश वर्षसहस्राणि न्यस्तचित्ता जगत्पतौ । नारायणे मुनिश्रेष्ठ सर्वलोकपरायणे

daśa varṣasahasrāṇi nyastacittā jagatpatau nārāyaṇe muniśreṣṭha sarvalokaparāyaṇe

For ten thousand years, O foremost of sages, their minds fixed upon Narayana, lord of the world, the supreme refuge of all the worlds,

Verse 20 (vishnu.1.14.20)

तत्रैव ते स्थिता देवम् एकाग्रमनसो हरिम् । तुष्टुवुर् यः स्तुतः कामान् स्तोतुर् इष्टान् प्रयच्छति

tatraiva te sthitā devam ekāgramanaso harim tuṣṭuvur yaḥ stutaḥ kāmān stotur iṣṭān prayacchati

remaining right there, with one-pointed mind, they praised that god Hari, who, once praised, grants to the one who praises him whatever he desires.

Verse 21 (vishnu.1.14.21)

श्रीमैत्रेय उवाच । स्तवं प्रचेतसो विष्णोः समुद्राम्भसि संस्थिताः । चक्रुस् तं मे मुनिश्रेष्ठ सुपुण्यं वक्तुम् अर्हसि

śrīmaitreya uvāca stavaṁ pracetaso viṣṇoḥ samudrāmbhasi saṁsthitāḥ cakrus taṁ me muniśreṣṭha supuṇyaṁ vaktum arhasi

Shri Maitreya said: O foremost of sages, that most sacred hymn to Vishnu which the Pracetas, dwelling in the waters of the ocean, composed — that you should tell me.

Verse 22 (vishnu.1.14.22)

श्रीपराशर उवाच । शृणु मैत्रेय गोविन्दं यथापूर्वं प्रचेतसः । तुष्टुवुस् तन्मयीभूताः समुद्रसलिलेशयाः

śrīparāśara uvāca śṛṇu maitreya govindaṁ yathāpūrvaṁ pracetasaḥ tuṣṭuvus tanmayībhūtāḥ samudrasalileśayāḥ

Shri Parashara said: Hear, Maitreya, how the Pracetas, dwelling in the waters of the ocean, absorbed wholly in him, praised Govinda of old, exactly as it happened.

Verse 23 (vishnu.1.14.23)

प्रचेतस ऊचुः । नताः स्म सर्ववचसां प्रतिष्ठा यत्र शाश्वती । तम् आद्यन्तम् अशेषस्य जगतः परमं प्रभुम्

pracetasa ūcuḥ natāḥ sma sarvavacasāṁ pratiṣṭhā yatra śāśvatī tam ādyantam aśeṣasya jagataḥ paramaṁ prabhum

The Pracetas said: 'We bow to him in whom the eternal foundation of all speech rests — the supreme lord of the entire universe, without beginning or end;'

Verse 24 (vishnu.1.14.24)

ज्योतिर् आद्यम् अनौपम्यम् अण्व् अनन्तम् अपारवत् । योनिभूतम् अशेषस्य स्थावरस्य चरस्य च

jyotir ādyam anaupamyam aṇv anantam apāravat yonibhūtam aśeṣasya sthāvarasya carasya ca

'the primal light, beyond compare, subtle, infinite, without limit, the very womb of all that is moving and unmoving;'

Verse 25 (vishnu.1.14.25)

यस्याहः प्रथमं रूपम् अरूपस्य ततो निशा । संध्या च परमेशस्य तस्मै कालात्मने नमः

yasyāhaḥ prathamaṁ rūpam arūpasya tato niśā saṁdhyā ca parameśasya tasmai kālātmane namaḥ

'he whose first form is day, and after that, night, of the formless one — and twilight too, of that supreme lord — salutation to him, the very self of time.'

Verse 26 (vishnu.1.14.26)

भुज्यतेऽनुदिनं देवैः पितृभिश् च सुधात्मकः । जीवभूतः समस्तस्य तस्मै सोमात्मने नमः

bhujyate 'nudinaṁ devaiḥ pitṛbhiś ca sudhātmakaḥ jīvabhūtaḥ samastasya tasmai somātmane namaḥ

'He who, of the nature of nectar, is daily partaken of by gods and Pitris, who is the very life of all — salutation to him, the self of the moon.'

Verse 27 (vishnu.1.14.27)

यस् तमो हन्ति तीव्रात्मा स्वभाभिर् भासयन् नभः । घर्मशीताम्भसां योनिस् तस्मै सूर्यात्मने नमः

yas tamo hanti tīvrātmā svabhābhir bhāsayan nabhaḥ gharmaśītāmbhasāṁ yonis tasmai sūryātmane namaḥ

'He who, fierce of nature, destroys darkness, illuminating the sky with his own rays, the source of heat and cold and of the waters — salutation to him, the self of the sun.'

Verse 28 (vishnu.1.14.28)

काठिन्यवान् यो बिभर्ति जगद् एतद् अशेषतः । शब्दादिसंश्रयो व्यापी तस्मै भूम्यात्मने नमः

kāṭhinyavān yo bibharti jagad etad aśeṣataḥ śabdādisaṁśrayo vyāpī tasmai bhūmyātmane namaḥ

'He who, possessed of solidity, bears this whole world entirely, the all-pervading ground of sound and the other sense-qualities — salutation to him, the self of the earth.'

Verse 29 (vishnu.1.14.29)

यद् योनिभूतं जगतो बीजं यत् सर्वदेहिनाम् । तत् तोयरूपम् ईशस्य नमामो हरिमेधसः

yad yonibhūtaṁ jagato bījaṁ yat sarvadehinām tat toyarūpam īśasya namāmo harimedhasaḥ

'That which is the source and seed of the world, of all embodied beings — that water-formed nature of the lord Harimedhas we salute.'

Verse 30 (vishnu.1.14.30)

यो मुखं सर्वदेवानां हव्यभुक् कव्यभुक् तथा । पितॄणां च नमस् तस्मै विष्णवे पावकात्मने

yo mukhaṁ sarvadevānāṁ havyabhuk kavyabhuk tathā pitṝṇāṁ ca namas tasmai viṣṇave pāvakātmane

'He who is the mouth of all the gods, the eater of oblations and of ancestral offerings, of the Pitris — salutation to him, Vishnu, the self of fire.'

Verse 31 (vishnu.1.14.31)

पञ्चधावस्थितो देहे यश् चेष्टां कुरुतेऽनिशम् । आकाशयोनिर् भगवांस् तस्मै वाय्वात्मने नमः

pañcadhāvasthito dehe yaś ceṣṭāṁ kurute 'niśam ākāśayonir bhagavāṁs tasmai vāyvātmane namaḥ

'He who, present fivefold within the body, ceaselessly performs its functions, the blessed lord, source of the ether — salutation to him, the self of the wind.'

Verse 32 (vishnu.1.14.32)

अवकाशम् अशेषाणां भूतानां यः प्रयच्छति । अनन्तमूर्तिमाञ् छुद्धस् तस्मै व्योमात्मने नमः

avakāśam aśeṣāṇāṁ bhūtānāṁ yaḥ prayacchati anantamūrtimāñ chuddhas tasmai vyomātmane namaḥ

'He who grants space to all beings without exception, of infinite form, pure — salutation to him, the self of the sky.'

Verse 33 (vishnu.1.14.33)

समस्तेन्द्रियवर्गस्य यः सदा स्थानम् उत्तमम् । तस्मै शब्दादिरूपाय नमः कृष्णाय वेधसे

samastendriyavargasya yaḥ sadā sthānam uttamam tasmai śabdādirūpāya namaḥ kṛṣṇāya vedhase

'He who is ever the supreme abode of the entire host of the senses — salutation to him, of the form of sound and the other qualities, Krishna, the ordainer.'

Verse 34 (vishnu.1.14.34)

गृह्णाति विषयान् नित्यम् इन्द्रियात्मा क्षराक्षरः । यस् तस्मै ज्ञानमूलाय नताः स्म हरिमेधसे

gṛhṇāti viṣayān nityam indriyātmā kṣarākṣaraḥ yas tasmai jñānamūlāya natāḥ sma harimedhase

'He who, as the self residing in the senses, both perishable and imperishable, ever grasps their objects — to him, the root of all knowledge, Harimedhas, we bow.'

Verse 35 (vishnu.1.14.35)

गृहीतान् इन्द्रियैर् अर्थान् आत्मने यः प्रयच्छति । अन्तःकरणभूताय तस्मै विश्वात्मने नमः

gṛhītān indriyair arthān ātmane yaḥ prayacchati antaḥkaraṇabhūtāya tasmai viśvātmane namaḥ

'He who grants to the self the objects grasped by the senses, become the inner faculty — salutation to him, the universal self.'

Verse 36 (vishnu.1.14.36)

यस्मिन्न् अनन्ते सकलं विश्वं यस्मात् तथोद्गतम् । लयस्थानं च यस् तस्मै नमः प्रकृतिधर्मिणे

yasminn anante sakalaṁ viśvaṁ yasmāt tathodgatam layasthānaṁ ca yas tasmai namaḥ prakṛtidharmiṇe

'He in whom, infinite, this whole universe exists, from whom it likewise arose, and who is its place of dissolution — salutation to him, whose nature is Prakriti.'

Verse 37 (vishnu.1.14.37)

शुद्धः संल्लक्ष्यते भ्रान्त्या गुणवान् इव योऽगुणः । तम् आत्मरूपिणं देवं नताः स्म पुरुषोत्तमम्

śuddhaḥ saṁllakṣyate bhrāntyā guṇavān iva yo 'guṇaḥ tam ātmarūpiṇaṁ devaṁ natāḥ sma puruṣottamam

'He who, pure, appears through delusion as though possessed of qualities, though himself without qualities — we bow to that god of the very form of the self, the Supreme Person.'

Verse 38 (vishnu.1.14.38)

अविकारम् अजं शुद्धं निर्गुणं यन् निरञ्जनम् । नताः स्म तत् परं ब्रह्म विष्णोर् यत् परमं पदम्

avikāram ajaṁ śuddhaṁ nirguṇaṁ yan nirañjanam natāḥ sma tat paraṁ brahma viṣṇor yat paramaṁ padam

'Unchanging, unborn, pure, without qualities, stainless — we bow to that Supreme Brahman, which is Vishnu's highest state.'

Verse 39 (vishnu.1.14.39)

अदीर्घह्रस्वम् अस्थूलम् अनण्व् अग्र्यम् अलोहितम् । अस्नेहच्छायम् अतनुम् असक्तम् असमीरणम्

adīrghahrasvam asthūlam anaṇv agryam alohitam asnehacchāyam atanum asaktam asamīraṇam

'Neither long nor short, neither gross nor subtle, foremost, without redness, without unctuous sheen, without body, unattached, without motion—'

Verse 40 (vishnu.1.14.40)

अनाकाशम् असंस्पर्शम् अगन्धम् अरसं च यत् । अचक्षुःश्रोत्रम् अचलम् अवाक्पाणिम् अमानसम्

anākāśam asaṁsparśam agandham arasaṁ ca yat acakṣuḥśrotram acalam avākpāṇim amānasam

'without space, without touch, without smell, without taste, without eyes or ears, immovable, without speech or hands, without mind—'

Verse 41 (vishnu.1.14.41)

अनामगोत्रम् असुखम् अतेजस्कम् अहेतुकम् । अभयं भ्रान्तिरहितम् अनिद्रम् अजरामरम्

anāmagotram asukham atejaskam ahetukam abhayaṁ bhrāntirahitam anidram ajarāmaram

'without name or lineage, without pleasure, without radiance, without cause, fearless, free of delusion, without sleep, undecaying, undying—'

Verse 42 (vishnu.1.14.42)

अरजोऽशब्दम् अमृतम् अप्लुतं यद् असंवृतम् । पूर्वापरे न वै यस्मिंस् तद् विष्णोः परमं पदम्

arajo 'śabdam amṛtam aplutaṁ yad asaṁvṛtam pūrvāpare na vai yasmiṁs tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam

'free of passion, soundless, immortal, unsubmerged, unconcealed, in which there is neither before nor after — that is Vishnu's supreme state.'

Verse 43 (vishnu.1.14.43)

परम् ईशित्वगुणवत् सर्वभूतम् असंश्रयम् । नताः स्म तत् पदं विष्णोर् जिह्वादृग्गोचरं न यत्

param īśitvaguṇavat sarvabhūtam asaṁśrayam natāḥ sma tat padaṁ viṣṇor jihvādṛggocaraṁ na yat

'Supreme, possessed of the quality of sovereignty, being all beings, dependent on nothing — we bow to that state of Vishnu, which lies beyond the reach of tongue or eye.'

Verse 44 (vishnu.1.14.44)

श्रीपराशर उवाच । एवं प्रचेतसो विष्णुं स्तुवन्तस् तत्समाधयः । दश वर्षसहस्राणि तपश् चेरुर् महार्णवे

śrīparāśara uvāca evaṁ pracetaso viṣṇuṁ stuvantas tatsamādhayaḥ daśa varṣasahasrāṇi tapaś cerur mahārṇave

Parashara said: Thus praising Vishnu, absorbed in meditation, the Pracetas performed austerity in the great ocean for ten thousand years.

Verse 45 (vishnu.1.14.45)

ततः प्रसन्नो भगवांस् तेषाम् अन्तर्जले हरिः । ददौ दर्शनम् उन्निद्रनीलोत्पलदलच्छविः

tataḥ prasanno bhagavāṁs teṣām antarjale hariḥ dadau darśanam unnidranīlotpaladalacchaviḥ

Then the blessed lord Hari, pleased, appeared before them within the water, radiant as the petal of a freshly-opened blue lotus.

Verse 46 (vishnu.1.14.46)

पतत्रिराजम् आरूढम् अवलोक्य प्रचेतसः । प्रणिपेतुः शिरोभिस् तं भक्तिभारावनामितैः

patatrirājam ārūḍham avalokya pracetasaḥ praṇipetuḥ śirobhis taṁ bhaktibhārāvanāmitaiḥ

Beholding him mounted upon the king of birds, Garuda, the Pracetas bowed down, their heads bent low beneath the weight of their devotion.

Verse 47 (vishnu.1.14.47)

ततस् तान् आह भगवान् व्रियताम् ईप्सितो वरः । प्रसादसुमुखोऽहं वो वरदः समुपस्थितः

tatas tān āha bhagavān vriyatām īpsito varaḥ prasādasumukho 'haṁ vo varadaḥ samupasthitaḥ

Then the blessed lord said to them: 'Choose the boon you desire; gracious of countenance, I, the giver of boons, have come before you.'

Verse 48 (vishnu.1.14.48)

ततस् तम् ऊचुर् वरदं प्रणिपत्य प्रचेतसः । यथा पित्रा समादिष्टं प्रजानां वृद्धिकारणम्

tatas tam ūcur varadaṁ praṇipatya pracetasaḥ yathā pitrā samādiṣṭaṁ prajānāṁ vṛddhikāraṇam

Then, bowing before that giver of boons, the Pracetas told him what their father had instructed, for the cause of increasing their subjects.

Verse 49 (vishnu.1.14.49)

स चापि देवस् तं दत्त्वा यथाभिलषितं वरम् । अन्तर्धानं जगामाशु ते च निश्चक्रमुर् जलात्
