Amsa 1 · Chapter 15
Kandu and Pramlocha, the Birth of Daksha, and the Gods' Lineages
Verse 1 (vishnu.1.15.1)
śrīparāśara uvāca tapaś caratsu pṛthivīṁ pracetaḥsu mahīruhāḥ arakṣyamāṇām āvavrur babhūvātha prajākṣayaḥ
Parashara said: While the Pracetas were performing austerity, trees overran the unguarded earth, and the destruction of created beings began.
Verse 2 (vishnu.1.15.2)
nāśakan māruto vātuṁ vṛtaṁ kham abhavad drumaiḥ daśavarṣasahasrāṇi na śekuś ceṣṭituṁ prajāḥ
The wind could not blow, and the sky became covered by trees; for ten thousand years, living beings could not so much as move.
Verse 3 (vishnu.1.15.3)
tān dṛṣṭvā jalaniṣkrāntāḥ sarve kruddhāḥ pracetasaḥ mukhebhyo vāyum agniṁ ca te 'sṛjañ jātamanyavaḥ
Seeing this, the Pracetas, emerging from the water, all grew enraged, and in their wrath created from their mouths wind and fire.
Verse 4 (vishnu.1.15.4)
unmūlān atha tān vṛkṣān kṛtvā vāyur aśoṣayat tān agnir adahad ghoras tatrābhūd drumasaṁkṣayaḥ
The wind uprooted those trees and dried them out, and the fierce fire burned them — thus the trees were destroyed.
Verse 5 (vishnu.1.15.5)
drumakṣayam atho dṛṣṭvā kiṁcic chiṣṭeṣu śākhiṣu upagamyābravīd etān rājā somaḥ prajāpatīn
Then, seeing that destruction of the trees, when only a few plants remained, King Soma approached those lords of creatures and spoke.
Verse 6 (vishnu.1.15.6)
kopaṁ yacchata rājānaḥ śṛṇudhvaṁ ca vaco mama saṁdhānaṁ vaḥ kariṣyāmi saha kṣitiruhair aham
'Restrain your wrath, O kings, and hear my words; I shall bring about a reconciliation between you and the trees.'
Verse 7 (vishnu.1.15.7)
ratnabhūtā ca kanyeyaṁ vārkṣeyī varavarṇinī bhaviṣyaṁ jānatā pūrvaṁ mayā gobhir vivardhitā
'This jewel-like maiden, daughter of the trees, of lovely hue — foreseeing the future, I have nurtured her with my rays.'
Verse 8 (vishnu.1.15.8)
māriṣā nāma nāmnaiṣā vṛkṣāṇām iti nirmitā bhāryā vo 'stu mahābhāgā dhruvaṁ vaṁśavivardhinī
'By name she is called Marisha, fashioned thus by the trees; let her become your wife, O greatly fortunate ones — she shall surely increase your lineage.'
Verse 9 (vishnu.1.15.9)
yuṣmākaṁ tejaso 'rdhena mama cārdhena tejasaḥ asyām utpatsyate vidvān dakṣo nāma prajāpatiḥ
'By half of your own vigor and half of mine, there shall be born through her a wise Prajapati named Daksha.'
Verse 10 (vishnu.1.15.10)
mama cāṁśena saṁyukto yuṣmattejomayena vai agnināgnisamo bhūyaḥ prajāḥ saṁvardhayiṣyati
'United with a portion of mine, made of your own splendor, he, equal to fire in his splendor, shall increase your subjects once more.'
Verse 11 (vishnu.1.15.11)
kaṇḍur nāma muniḥ pūrvam āsīd vedavidāṁ varaḥ suramye gomatītīre sa tepe paramaṁ tapaḥ
There once was a sage named Kandu, foremost among knowers of the Veda, who performed the highest austerity on the delightful bank of the river Gomati.
Verse 12 (vishnu.1.15.12)
tatkṣobhāya surendreṇa pramlocākhyā varāpsarāḥ prayuktā kṣobhayām āsa tam ṛṣiṁ sā śucismitā
To disturb him, the lord of the gods employed a lovely, sweet-smiling Apsara named Pramlocha, who set about disturbing that sage.
Verse 13 (vishnu.1.15.13)
kṣobhitaḥ sa tayā sārdhaṁ varṣāṇām adhikaṁ śatam atiṣṭhan mandaradroṇyāṁ viṣayāsaktamānasaḥ
Disturbed by her, he remained together with her for more than a hundred years in the valley of Mount Mandara, his mind attached to the objects of sense.
Verse 14 (vishnu.1.15.14)
sā taṁ prāha mahābhāga gantum icchāmy ahaṁ divam prasādasumukho brahmann anujñāṁ dātum arhasi
Then she said to him, 'O greatly blessed one, I wish to go to heaven; O brahmin, be gracious of countenance and grant me leave.'
Verse 15 (vishnu.1.15.15)
tayaivam uktaḥ sa munis tasyām āsaktamānasaḥ dināni katicid bhadre sthīyatām ity abhāṣata
Thus addressed by her, that sage, his mind attached to her, said, 'Stay a few more days, gracious one.'
Verse 16 (vishnu.1.15.16)
evam uktā tatas tena sāgraṁ varṣaśataṁ punaḥ bubhuje viṣayāṁs tanvī tena sārdhaṁ mahātmanā
Thus told by him, that slender woman again enjoyed the pleasures of the senses together with him for more than a hundred years.
Verse 17 (vishnu.1.15.17)
anujñāṁ dehi bhagavan vrajāmi tridaśālayam uktas tayeti sa muniḥ sthīyatām ity abhāṣata
'Grant me leave, blessed one; I go to the abode of the gods' — thus told by her, the sage again said, 'Stay.'
Verse 18 (vishnu.1.15.18)
punar gate varṣaśate sādhike sā śubhānanā yāmīty āha divaṁ brahman praṇayasmitaśobhanam
Again, when a little more than a hundred years had passed, that lovely-faced woman said, with a smile beautified by affection, 'O brahmin, I am going.'
Verse 19 (vishnu.1.15.19)
uktas tayaivaṁ sa munir upaguhyāyatekṣaṇām prāhāsyatāṁ kṣaṇaṁ subhru cirakālaṁ gamiṣyasi
Thus addressed, the sage, embracing her of the wide eyes, said, 'Stay but a moment, fair-browed one; you shall go after a long time yet.'
Verse 20 (vishnu.1.15.20)
tacchāpabhītā suśroṇī saha tenarṣiṇā punaḥ śatadvayaṁ kiṁcid ūnaṁ varṣāṇām anvatiṣṭhata
Fearing his curse, that fair one remained together with that sage for nearly two hundred years more.
Verse 21 (vishnu.1.15.21)
gamanāya mahābhāgo devarājaniveśanam proktaḥ proktas tayā tanvyā sthīyatām ity abhāṣata
When she once again spoke of going to the abode of the king of the gods, that greatly blessed sage said to that slender woman, 'Stay.'
Verse 22 (vishnu.1.15.22)
taṁ sā śāpabhayād bhītā dākṣiṇyena ca dakṣiṇā proktā praṇayabhaṅgārtivedinī na jahau munim
Fearing his curse, and out of her own graciousness, told to stay, she, perceiving the pain of a broken affection, could not leave the sage.
Verse 23 (vishnu.1.15.23)
tayā ca ramatas tasya paramarṣer aharniśam navaṁ navam abhūt prema manmathāviṣṭacetasaḥ
And as that great sage sported with her day and night, his mind overcome by desire, his love grew ever-new with each passing day.
Verse 24 (vishnu.1.15.24)
ekadā tu tvarāyukto niścakrāmoṭajān muniḥ niṣkrāmantaṁ ca kutreti gamyate prāha sā śubhā
One day the sage went forth from his hut in haste; and as he was going, that lovely woman asked, 'Where are you going?'
Verse 25 (vishnu.1.15.25)
ity uktaḥ sa tayā prāha parivṛttam ahaḥ śubhe saṁdhyopāstiṁ kariṣyāmi kriyālopo 'nyathā bhavet
Thus asked, he said, 'The day has turned, gracious one; I must perform my twilight worship, or else there will be a lapse in the rite.'
Verse 26 (vishnu.1.15.26)
tataḥ prahasya muditā taṁ sā prāha mahāmunim kim adya sarvadharmajña parivṛttam ahas tava
Then, laughing with delight, she said to that great sage, 'What, O knower of all dharma — has your day turned today?'
Verse 27 (vishnu.1.15.27)
bahūnāṁ vipra varṣāṇāṁ pariṇāmam ahas tava gatam etan na kurute vismayaṁ kasya kathyatām
'The turning of your day, O brahmin, is but the result of many years having passed — this is a cause of wonder to no one; to whom, then, should it be told?'
Verse 28 (vishnu.1.15.28)
munir uvāca prātas tvam āgatā bhadre nadītīram idaṁ śubham mayā dṛṣṭā ca tanvaṅgi praviṣṭā ca mamāśramam
The sage said: 'This very morning, gracious one, you came to this lovely riverbank; I saw you, slender one, and you entered my hermitage.'
Verse 29 (vishnu.1.15.29)
iyaṁ ca vartate saṁdhyā pariṇāmam ahar gatam avahāsaḥ kimartho 'yaṁ sadbhāvaḥ kathyatāṁ mama
'And now this is evening, the day having passed — why this jest? Tell me the truth of the matter.'
Verse 30 (vishnu.1.15.30)
śrīpramlocovāca pratyūṣasy āgatā brahman satyam etan na tan mṛṣā kintv adya tasya kālasya gatāny abdaśatāni te
Shri Pramlocha said: 'I came at dawn, O brahmin — this is true, not false; but since that time, hundreds of years have now passed.'
Verse 31 (vishnu.1.15.31)
śrīsoma uvāca tataḥ sasādhvaso vipras tāṁ papracchāyatekṣaṇām kathyatāṁ bhīru kaḥ kālas tvayā me ramataḥ saha
Shri Soma said: Then the brahmin, filled with dread, asked her of the wide eyes, 'Tell me, timid one, how much time has passed with you sporting here with me?'
Verse 32 (vishnu.1.15.32)
śrīpramlocovāca saptottarāṇy atītāni nava varṣaśatāni te māsāś ca ṣaṭ tathaivānyat samatītaṁ dinatrayam
Shri Pramlocha said: 'Nine hundred and seven years have passed, and six months besides, and three days more.'
Verse 33 (vishnu.1.15.33)
ṛṣir uvāca satyaṁ bhīru vadasy etat parihāso 'tha vā śubhe dinam ekam ahaṁ manye tvayā sārdham ihāsitam
The sage said: 'You speak the truth, timid one — or is this some jest, gracious one? I think only a single day has been spent here with you.'
Verse 34 (vishnu.1.15.34)
śrīpramlocovāca vadiṣyāmy anṛtaṁ brahman katham atra tavāntike viśeṣeṇādya bhavatā pṛṣṭā mārgānuvartinā
Shri Pramlocha said: 'How could I speak falsehood before you, O brahmin, especially now, when asked by you, who follow the very path of truth?'
Verse 35 (vishnu.1.15.35)
śrīsoma uvāca niśamya tad vacaḥ tasyāḥ sa munir nṛpanandanāḥ dhiṅ māṁ dhiṅ mām atīvetthaṁ ninindātmānam ātmanā
Shri Soma said: O sons of the king, hearing her words, that sage began to revile himself again and again — 'Shame on me, shame on me!'
Verse 36 (vishnu.1.15.36)
munir uvāca tapāṁsi mama naṣṭāni hataṁ brahmavidāṁ dhanam hṛto vivekaḥ kenāpi yoṣin mohāya nirmitā
The sage said: 'My austerities are destroyed, the wealth of the knowers of Brahman has been plundered; this woman, fashioned for delusion, has somehow stolen my discernment.'
Verse 37 (vishnu.1.15.37)
ūrmiṣaṭkātigaṁ brahma jñeyam ātmajayena me matir eṣā hṛtā yena dhik taṁ kāmaṁ mahāgraham
'That Brahman which is to be known, beyond the six waves, through self-mastery — that very resolve of mine has been stolen by her; shame upon that desire, that great seizer of the mind!'
Verse 38 (vishnu.1.15.38)
vratāni vedavedyāptikāraṇāny akhilāni ca narakagrāmamārgeṇa saṅgenāpahṛtāni me
'All the vows whose purpose was the attainment of what is known through the Veda have, through this attachment of mine, been carried off down the road to the village of hell.'
Verse 39 (vishnu.1.15.39)
vinindyetthaṁ sa dharmajñaḥ svayam ātmānam ātmanā tām apsarasam āsīnām idaṁ vacanam abravīt
Thus reviling himself, that knower of dharma spoke this to that seated Apsara.
Verse 40 (vishnu.1.15.40)
gaccha pāpe yathā kāmaṁ yat kāryaṁ tat kṛtaṁ tvayā devarājasya matkṣobhaṁ kurvantyā bhāvaceṣṭitaiḥ
'Go, O wicked one, as you please; what was to be done has been done by you — disturbing me through your feigned behavior for the sake of the king of the gods.'
Verse 41 (vishnu.1.15.41)
na tvāṁ karomy ahaṁ bhasma krodhatīvreṇa vahninā satāṁ saptapadaṁ maitram uṣito 'haṁ tvayā saha
'I do not burn you to ashes with the fierce fire of my wrath; for I have dwelt with you as with a friend, through the seven steps of the virtuous.'
Verse 42 (vishnu.1.15.42)
atha vā tava ko doṣaḥ kiṁ vā kupyāmy ahaṁ tava mamaiva doṣo nitarāṁ yenāham ajitendriyaḥ
'Or rather, what fault is yours at all? Why should I be angry with you? The fault is entirely my own, in that I could not conquer my own senses.'
Verse 43 (vishnu.1.15.43)
yayā śakrapriyārthinyā kṛto me tapaso vyayaḥ tvayā dhik tvāṁ mahāmohamañjūṣāṁ sujugupsitām
'Seeking only to please Shakra, you have brought about the ruin of my austerity — shame upon you, a very casket of great delusion, utterly contemptible!'
Verse 44 (vishnu.1.15.44)
śrīsoma uvāca yāvad itthaṁ sa viprarṣis tāṁ bravīti sumadhyamām tāvad galatsvedajalā sā babhūvātivepathuḥ
Shri Soma said: As that brahmin sage was speaking thus to that slender woman, she began to tremble exceedingly, sweat pouring from her body.
Verse 45 (vishnu.1.15.45)
pravepamānāṁ satataṁ khinnagātralatāṁ satīm gaccha gaccheti sakrodham uvāca munisattamaḥ
Trembling continually, her limbs like a wilted creeper, that virtuous woman was told, in anger, by that best of sages, 'Go, go!'
Verse 46 (vishnu.1.15.46)
sā tu nirbhartsitā tena viniṣkramya tadāśramāt ākāśagāminī svedaṁ mamārja tarupallavaiḥ
Rebuked by him, she departed at once from that hermitage, and, moving through the sky, wiped away her sweat with the leaves of the trees.
Verse 47 (vishnu.1.15.47)
vṛkṣād vṛkṣaṁ yayau bālā tadagrāruṇapallavaiḥ nirmārjamānā gātrāṇi galatsvedajalāni vai
That young woman went from tree to tree, wiping her limbs, dripping with sweat, upon the reddish young leaves at the tips of the branches.
Verse 48 (vishnu.1.15.48)
ṛṣiṇā yas tadā garbhas tasyā dehe samāhitaḥ nirjagāma saromāñcasvedarūpī tadaṅgataḥ
At that time, the embryo which the sage had planted within her body came forth from her limbs, in the form of the down of her hair mixed with her sweat.
Verse 49 (vishnu.1.15.49)
taṁ vṛkṣā jagṛhur garbham ekaṁ cakre ca mārutaḥ mayā cāpyāyito gobhiḥ sa tadā vavṛdhe śanaiḥ
The trees took hold of that embryo, and the wind united it into one; and I too nourished it with my rays, and thus, little by little, it grew.
Verse 50 (vishnu.1.15.50)
vṛkṣāgragarbhasaṁbhūtā māriṣākhyā varānanā tāṁ pradāsyanti vo vṛkṣāḥ kopa eṣa praśāmyatām
'That fair-faced maiden, born from the embryo at the tips of the trees, named Marisha — her the trees shall give to you; let this wrath be calmed.'
Verse 51 (vishnu.1.15.51)
kaṇḍor apatyam evaṁ sā vṛkṣebhyaś ca samudgatā mamāpatyaṁ tathā vāyoḥ pramlocātanayā ca sā
Thus she is the offspring of Kandu, and likewise arisen from the trees; and, as the daughter of Pramlocha, she is also my own offspring, and the wind's.
Verse 52 (vishnu.1.15.52)
sa cāpi bhagavān kaṇḍuḥ kṣīṇe tapasi sattamāḥ puruṣottamākhyam adrīśaṁ viṣṇor āyatanaṁ yayau
And the blessed Kandu too, O most excellent ones, his austerity now spent, went to Vishnu's abode named Purushottama, on the lord of mountains.
Verse 53 (vishnu.1.15.53)
tatraikāgramatir bhūtvā cakārārādhanaṁ hareḥ brahmapāramayaṁ kurvañ japam ekāgramānasaḥ ūrdhvabāhur mahāyogī sthitvāsau bhūpanandanāḥ
There, with one-pointed mind, he worshipped Hari, reciting the japa called Brahmapara, his mind fixed, his arms raised, that great yogi, O sons of the king, remaining thus.
Verse 54 (vishnu.1.15.54)
pracetasa ūcuḥ brahmapāraṁ muneḥ śrotum icchāmaḥ paramaṁ stavam japatā kaṇḍunā devo yenārādhyata keśavaḥ
The Pracetas said: We wish to hear that supreme hymn of the sage, by reciting which Kandu worshipped the god Keshava.
Verse 55 (vishnu.1.15.55)
śrīsoma uvāca pāraṁ paraṁ viṣṇur apārapāraḥ paraḥ parebhyaḥ paramārtharūpī sa brahmapāraḥ parapārabhūtaḥ paraḥ parāṇām api pārapāraḥ
Shri Soma said: 'He, the shore beyond the shore, Vishnu, whose farther shore is without limit, supreme beyond the supreme, of the very form of highest truth — he is the crossing to Brahman itself, become the farther shore of the farther shore, supreme even beyond the supreme.'
Verse 56 (vishnu.1.15.56)
sa kāraṇaṁ kāraṇatas tato 'pi tasyāpi hetuḥ parahetuhetuḥ kāryeṣu caivaṁ saha karmakartṛ rūpair aśeṣair avatīha sarvam
'He is the cause of causes, and beyond that too, the cause of that cause; and in his effects, together with all the forms of action, agent, and instrument, he alone enters into and pervades all this.'
