The Slaying of Kamsa

Verse 1 (vishnu.5.20.1)

श्रीपराशर उवाच। राजमार्गे ततः कृष्णस्सानुलेपनभाजनाम्। ददर्श कुब्जामायांतीं नवयौवनगोचराम्

śrīparāśara uvāca rājamārge tataḥ kṛṣṇassānulepanabhājanām dadarśa kubjāmāyāṁtīṁ navayauvanagocarām

Parashara said: Then, on the royal road, Krishna saw a hunchbacked woman coming along, carrying a vessel of unguent, one just come into the bloom of youth.

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.20.2)

तामाह ललितं कृष्णः कस्येदमनुलेपनम्। भवत्या नीयते सत्यं वदेंदीवरलोचने

tāmāha lalitaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ kasyedamanulepanam bhavatyā nīyate satyaṁ vadeṁdīvaralocane

Krishna playfully said to her: 'For whom is this unguent that you are carrying? Tell me truly, O lotus-eyed one.'

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.20.3)

सकामेनेव सा प्रोक्ता सानुरागा हरिं प्रति। प्राह सा ललितं कुब्जा तद्दर्शनबलात्कृता

sakāmeneva sā proktā sānurāgā hariṁ prati prāha sā lalitaṁ kubjā taddarśanabalātkṛtā

Addressed as if in desire, she, filled at once with love for Hari, compelled by the very sight of him, replied playfully —

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.20.4)

कांत कस्मान्न जानासि कंसेन विनियोजिताम्। नैकवक्रेति विख्यातामनुलेपनकर्मणि

kāṁta kasmānna jānāsi kaṁsena viniyojitām naikavakreti vikhyātāmanulepanakarmaṇi

'O beloved, do you not know that Kamsa himself has appointed me to the task of preparing unguents, and that I am renowned by the name Naikavakra?'

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.20.5)

नान्यपिष्टं हि कंसस्य प्रीतये ह्यनुलेपनम्। भवाम्यहमतीवास्य प्रसादधनभाजनम्

nānyapiṣṭaṁ hi kaṁsasya prītaye hyanulepanam bhavāmyahamatīvāsya prasādadhanabhājanam

'No unguent ground by another serves to please Kamsa; I alone am the vessel of his abundant favor and reward.'

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.20.6)

श्रीकृष्ण उवाच। सुगंधमेतद्रा जार्हं रुचिरं रुचिरानने। आवयोर्गात्र सदृशं दीयतामनुलेपनम्

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca sugaṁdhametadrā jārhaṁ ruciraṁ rucirānane āvayorgātra sadṛśaṁ dīyatāmanulepanam

Sri Krishna said: 'O lovely-faced one, that fragrant unguent, so fine, fit even for a king — give some of it, suited to our two bodies, to us as well.'

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.20.7)

श्रीपराशर उवाच। श्रुत्वैतदाह सा कुब्जा गृह्यतामिति सादरम्। अनुलेपनं च प्रददौ गात्रयोग्यमथोभयोः

śrīparāśara uvāca śrutvaitadāha sā kubjā gṛhyatāmiti sādaram anulepanaṁ ca pradadau gātrayogyamathobhayoḥ

Parashara said: Hearing this, that hunchbacked woman said with respect, 'Take it, then,' and gave the two of them unguent fit for their bodies.

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.20.8)

भक्तिच्छेदानुलिप्तांगौ ततस्तौ पुरुषर्षभौ। सेंद्रचापौ व्यराजेतां सितकृष्णाविवांबुदौ

bhakticchedānuliptāṁgau tatastau puruṣarṣabhau seṁdracāpau vyarājetāṁ sitakṛṣṇāvivāṁbudau

Their limbs anointed with a fair share of that unguent, those two foremost of men shone forth, resplendent as a pair of clouds, one white and one dark, each ringed with a rainbow.

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.20.9)

ततस्तां चुबुके शौरिरुल्लापनविधानवित्। उत्पाट्य तोलयामास द्व्यंगुलेनाग्रपाणिना

tatastāṁ cubuke śaurirullāpanavidhānavit utpāṭya tolayāmāsa dvyaṁgulenāgrapāṇinā

Then Shauri, skilled in the art of setting things right, took hold of her chin between the tips of two fingers, lifted it, and weighed it, as it were.

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.20.10)

चकर्ष पद्भ्यां च तदा ऋजुत्वं केशवोऽनयत्। ततस्सा ऋजुतां प्राप्ता योषितामभवद्वरा

cakarṣa padbhyāṁ ca tadā ṛjutvaṁ keśavo'nayat tatassā ṛjutāṁ prāptā yoṣitāmabhavadvarā

And with his feet he drew her forward, and thus Keshava made her straight. Once made straight, she became the loveliest among women.

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.20.11)

विलासललितं प्राह प्रेमगर्भभरालसम्। वस्त्रे प्रगृह्य गोविंदं मम गेहं व्रजेति वै

vilāsalalitaṁ prāha premagarbhabharālasam vastre pragṛhya goviṁdaṁ mama gehaṁ vrajeti vai

Languid with the fullness of love, she spoke playfully and gracefully, catching hold of Govinda's garment: 'Come to my house.'

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.20.12)

एवमुक्तस्तया शौरी रामस्यालोक्य चाननम्। प्रहस्य कुब्जां तामाह नैकवक्रामनिंदिताम्

evamuktastayā śaurī rāmasyālokya cānanam prahasya kubjāṁ tāmāha naikavakrāmaniṁditām

Thus addressed by her, Shauri glanced at Rama's face, and, smiling, said to that blameless hunchback Naikavakra —

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.20.13)

आयास्ये भवतीगेहमिति तां प्रहसन्हरिः। विससर्ज जहासोच्चै रामस्यालोक्य चाननम्

āyāsye bhavatīgehamiti tāṁ prahasanhariḥ visasarja jahāsoccai rāmasyālokya cānanam

'I shall come to your house.' Saying this with a smile, Hari let her go, and, glancing again at Rama's face, burst into loud laughter.

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.20.14)

भक्तिच्छेदानुलिप्तांगौ नीलपीतांबरौ तु तौ। धनुश्शालां ततो यातौ चित्रमाल्योपशोभितौ

bhakticchedānuliptāṁgau nīlapītāṁbarau tu tau dhanuśśālāṁ tato yātau citramālyopaśobhitau

Their limbs anointed each with his own share of the unguent, clad now in blue and yellow, and adorned with varied garlands, the two of them went on toward the hall of the bow.

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.20.15)

आयागं तद्धनूरत्नं ताभ्यां पृष्टैस्तु रक्षिभिः। आख्याते सहसा कृष्णो गृहीत्वा पूरयद्धनुः

āyāgaṁ taddhanūratnaṁ tābhyāṁ pṛṣṭaistu rakṣibhiḥ ākhyāte sahasā kṛṣṇo gṛhītvā pūrayaddhanuḥ

When the guards were asked, that jewel among bows, the Ayaga, was shown to the two of them at once; and Krishna, taking it up without delay, strung it.

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.20.16)

ततः पूरयता तेन भज्यमानं बलाद्धनुः। चकार सुमहच्छब्दं मथुरा येन पूरिता

tataḥ pūrayatā tena bhajyamānaṁ balāddhanuḥ cakāra sumahacchabdaṁ mathurā yena pūritā

As he strung it, the bow, being forcibly bent and broken, made so tremendous a sound that all of Mathura was filled with it.

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.20.17)

अनुयुक्तौ ततस्तौ तु भग्ने धनुषि रक्षिभिः। रक्षिसैन्यं निहत्योभौ निष्क्रांतौ कार्मुकालयात्

anuyuktau tatastau tu bhagne dhanuṣi rakṣibhiḥ rakṣisainyaṁ nihatyobhau niṣkrāṁtau kārmukālayāt

The moment the bow broke, the guards fell upon the two of them; but having slain the guards' host, both came forth from the hall of the bow.

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.20.18)

अक्रूरागमवृत्तांतमुपलभ्य महद्धनुः। भग्नं श्रुत्वा च कंसोऽपि प्राह चाणूरमुष्टिकौ

akrūrāgamavṛttāṁtamupalabhya mahaddhanuḥ bhagnaṁ śrutvā ca kaṁso'pi prāha cāṇūramuṣṭikau

Having learned the account of Akrura's arrival, and hearing too that the great bow had been broken, Kamsa said to Chanura and Mushtika —

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.20.19)

कंस उवाच। गोपालदारकौ प्राप्तौ भवद्भ्यां तु ममाग्रतः। मल्लयुद्धेन हंतव्यौ मम प्राणहरौ हि तौ

kaṁsa uvāca gopāladārakau prāptau bhavadbhyāṁ tu mamāgrataḥ mallayuddhena haṁtavyau mama prāṇaharau hi tau

Kamsa said: 'Those two cowherd boys have now come before me; you two must kill them in wrestling combat — for they are, indeed, the very ones who will take my life.'

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.20.20)

नियुद्धे तद्विनाश्नो भवद्भ्यां तोषितो ह्यहम्। दास्याम्यभिमतान्कामान्नान्यथैतौ महाबलौ

niyuddhe tadvināśno bhavadbhyāṁ toṣito hyaham dāsyāmyabhimatānkāmānnānyathaitau mahābalau

'If through wrestling you destroy them, I shall be well pleased and grant you whatever you desire; otherwise, these two of great strength will spare no one.'

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.20.21)

न्यायतोन्यायतो वापि भवद्भ्यां तौ ममाहितौ। हन्तव्यौ तद्वधाद्राज्यं सामान्यं वां भविष्यति

nyāyatonyāyato vāpi bhavadbhyāṁ tau mamāhitau hantavyau tadvadhādrājyaṁ sāmānyaṁ vāṁ bhaviṣyati

'Whether by fair means or foul, those two enemies of mine must be killed by you; and upon their death, my kingdom shall be shared between the two of you.'

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.20.22)

इत्यादिश्य स तौ मल्लौ ततश्चाहूय हस्तिपम्। प्रोवाचोच्चैस्त्वया मल्लसमाजद्वारि कुंजरः

ityādiśya sa tau mallau tataścāhūya hastipam provācoccaistvayā mallasamājadvāri kuṁjaraḥ

Having thus instructed the two wrestlers, he then summoned the elephant-driver and said to him loudly: 'By you, at the door of the wrestling-arena, an elephant —'

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.20.23)

स्थाप्यः कुवलयापीडस्तेन तौ गोपदारकौ। घातनीयौ नियुद्धाय रंगद्वारमुपागतौ

sthāpyaḥ kuvalayāpīḍastena tau gopadārakau ghātanīyau niyuddhāya raṁgadvāramupāgatau

'— the elephant Kuvalayapida shall be stationed, so that when those two cowherd boys reach the arena's gate for the wrestling match, they may be killed by it.'

Verse 24 (vishnu.5.20.24)

तमप्याज्ञाप्य दृष्ट्वा च सर्वान्मंचानुपाकृतान्। आसन्न मरणः कंसः सूर्योदयमुदैक्षत

tamapyājñāpya dṛṣṭvā ca sarvānmaṁcānupākṛtān āsanna maraṇaḥ kaṁsaḥ sūryodayamudaikṣata

Having given this order too, and seeing all the galleries made ready, Kamsa, his death now close at hand, watched for the sunrise.

Verse 25 (vishnu.5.20.25)

ततः समस्तमंचेषु नागरस्स तदा जनः। राजमंचेषु चारूढास्सह भृत्यैर्नराधिपाः

tataḥ samastamaṁceṣu nāgarassa tadā janaḥ rājamaṁceṣu cārūḍhāssaha bhṛtyairnarādhipāḥ

Then the townsfolk took their seats upon all the galleries, and the kings too, together with their attendants, took their places on the royal galleries.

Verse 26 (vishnu.5.20.26)

मल्लप्राश्निकवर्गश्च रंगमध्यसमीपगः। कृतः कंसेन कंसोऽपि तुंगमंचे व्यवस्थितः

mallaprāśnikavargaśca raṁgamadhyasamīpagaḥ kṛtaḥ kaṁsena kaṁso'pi tuṁgamaṁce vyavasthitaḥ

The panel of umpires for the match was seated by Kamsa close to the middle of the arena, and Kamsa himself took his place upon a lofty gallery.

Verse 27 (vishnu.5.20.27)

अंतःपुराणां मंचाश्च तथाऽन्ये परिकल्पिताः। अन्ये च वारमुख्यानामन्ये नागरयोषिताम्

aṁtaḥpurāṇāṁ maṁcāśca tathā'nye parikalpitāḥ anye ca vāramukhyānāmanye nāgarayoṣitām

Galleries were arranged too for the women of the inner apartments, others for the leading courtesans, and others still for the townswomen.

Verse 28 (vishnu.5.20.28)

नंदगोपादयो गोपा मंचेष्वन्येष्ववस्थिताः। अक्रूरवसुदेवौ च मंचप्रांते व्यवस्थितौ

naṁdagopādayo gopā maṁceṣvanyeṣvavasthitāḥ akrūravasudevau ca maṁcaprāṁte vyavasthitau

Nanda and the other cowherds took their seats upon other galleries, and Akrura and Vasudeva stationed themselves at the edge of one gallery.

Verse 29 (vishnu.5.20.29)

नागरीयोषितां मध्ये देवकीपुत्रगर्द्धिनी। अंतकालेऽपि पुत्रस्य द्रक्ष्यामीति मुखं स्थिता

nāgarīyoṣitāṁ madhye devakīputragarddhinī aṁtakāle'pi putrasya drakṣyāmīti mukhaṁ sthitā

In the midst of the townswomen stood Devaki, yearning for her son, thinking, 'Even at this final hour I shall see my son's face.'

Verse 30 (vishnu.5.20.30)

वाद्यमानेषु तूर्येषु चाणूरे चातिवल्गति। हाहाकारपरे लोके ह्यास्फोटयति मुष्टिके

vādyamāneṣu tūryeṣu cāṇūre cātivalgati hāhākārapare loke hyāsphoṭayati muṣṭike

As the instruments played, and Chanura leapt about with great vigor, and the crowd was lost in cries of dismay, Mushtika slapped his arms in challenge.

Verse 31 (vishnu.5.20.31)

ईषद्धसंतौ तौ वीरौ बलभद्रजनार्दनौ। गोपवेषधरौ बालौ रंगद्वारमुपागतौ

īṣaddhasaṁtau tau vīrau balabhadrajanārdanau gopaveṣadharau bālau raṁgadvāramupāgatau

Just then, those two young heroes, Balabhadra and Janardana, smiling gently, clad in the garb of cowherds, arrived at the gate of the arena.

Verse 32 (vishnu.5.20.32)

ततः कुवलयापीडो महामात्रप्रचोदितः। अभ्यधावत वेगेन हंतुं गोपकुमारकौ

tataḥ kuvalayāpīḍo mahāmātrapracoditaḥ abhyadhāvata vegena haṁtuṁ gopakumārakau

Then the elephant Kuvalayapida, urged on by its driver, charged forward with great speed to kill the two cowherd boys.

Verse 33 (vishnu.5.20.33)

हाहाकारो महाञ्जज्ञे रंगमध्ये द्विजोत्तम। बलदेवोऽनुजं दृष्ट्वा वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्

hāhākāro mahāñjajñe raṁgamadhye dvijottama baladevo'nujaṁ dṛṣṭvā vacanaṁ cedamabravīt

A great cry of dismay rose up in the middle of the arena, O best of brahmins; and Baladeva, looking at his younger brother, spoke these words —

Verse 34 (vishnu.5.20.34)

हंतव्यो हि महाभाग नागोऽयं शत्रुचोदितः

haṁtavyo hi mahābhāga nāgo'yaṁ śatrucoditaḥ

'O illustrious one, this elephant, incited by our enemy, must indeed be killed.'

Verse 35 (vishnu.5.20.35)

इत्युक्तस्सोऽग्रजेनाथ बलदेवेन वै द्विज। सिंहनादं ततश्चक्रे माधवः परवीरहा

ityuktasso'grajenātha baladevena vai dvija siṁhanādaṁ tataścakre mādhavaḥ paravīrahā

Thus addressed, O brahmin, by his elder brother Baladeva, Madhava, the slayer of enemy heroes, then gave forth a lion's roar.

Verse 36 (vishnu.5.20.36)

करेण करमाकृष्य तस्य केशिनिषूदनः। भ्रामयामास तं शौरिरैरावतसमं बले

kareṇa karamākṛṣya tasya keśiniṣūdanaḥ bhrāmayāmāsa taṁ śaurirairāvatasamaṁ bale

Seizing the elephant's trunk with his own hand, Shauri, the slayer of Keshi, whirled that beast, mighty as Airavata, around.

Verse 37 (vishnu.5.20.37)

ईशोपि सर्वजगतां बाललीलानुसारतः। क्रीडित्वा सुचिरं कृष्णः करिदंतपदांतरे

īśopi sarvajagatāṁ bālalīlānusārataḥ krīḍitvā suciraṁ kṛṣṇaḥ karidaṁtapadāṁtare

Though he was the Lord of all worlds, following the way of a child's play, Krishna sported for a long while there, between the elephant's two tusks.

Verse 38 (vishnu.5.20.38)

उत्पाट्य वामदंतं तु दक्षिणेनैव पाणिना। ताडयामास यंतारं तस्यासीच्छतधा शिरः

utpāṭya vāmadaṁtaṁ tu dakṣiṇenaiva pāṇinā tāḍayāmāsa yaṁtāraṁ tasyāsīcchatadhā śiraḥ

Then, tearing out the elephant's left tusk with his very right hand, he struck the driver with it, and that man's head shattered into a hundred pieces.

Verse 39 (vishnu.5.20.39)

दक्षिणं दंतमुत्पाट्य बलभद्रोऽपि तत्क्षणात्। स रोषस्तेन पार्श्वस्थान् गजपालानपोथयत्

dakṣiṇaṁ daṁtamutpāṭya balabhadro'pi tatkṣaṇāt sa roṣastena pārśvasthān gajapālānapothayat

In that same instant Balabhadra too tore out the right tusk, and, filled with rage, crushed with it the other elephant-keepers standing nearby.

Verse 40 (vishnu.5.20.40)

ततस्तूत्प्लुत्य वेगेन रौहिणेयो महाबलः। जघान वामपादेन मस्तके हस्तिनं रुषा

tatastūtplutya vegena rauhiṇeyo mahābalaḥ jaghāna vāmapādena mastake hastinaṁ ruṣā

Then, leaping up with great speed, the mighty Rauhineya, in fury, struck the elephant upon its head with his left foot.

Verse 41 (vishnu.5.20.41)

स पपात हतस्तेन बलभद्रेण लीलया। सहस्राक्षेण वज्रेण ताडितः पर्वतो यथा

sa papāta hatastena balabhadreṇa līlayā sahasrākṣeṇa vajreṇa tāḍitaḥ parvato yathā

Struck down by that mere sport of Balabhadra's, the elephant fell just as a mountain falls when struck by the thunderbolt of thousand-eyed Indra.

Verse 42 (vishnu.5.20.42)

हत्वा कुवलयापीडं हस्त्यारोहप्रचोदितम्। मदासृगनुलिप्तांगौ हस्तिदंतवरायुधौ

hatvā kuvalayāpīḍaṁ hastyārohapracoditam madāsṛganuliptāṁgau hastidaṁtavarāyudhau

Having slain Kuvalayapida, driven on by its own rider, their limbs now smeared with its ichor and blood, wielding the elephant's own fine tusks as weapons —

Verse 43 (vishnu.5.20.43)

मृगमध्ये यथा सिंहौ गर्वलीलावलोकिनौ। प्रविष्टौ सुमहारंगं बलभद्रजनार्दनौ

mṛgamadhye yathā siṁhau garvalīlāvalokinau praviṣṭau sumahāraṁgaṁ balabhadrajanārdanau

like two lions among a herd of deer, glancing about with a proud and playful gaze, Balabhadra and Janardana entered that vast arena.

Verse 44 (vishnu.5.20.44)

हाहाकारो महाञ्जज्ञे महारंगे त्वनंतरम्। कृष्णोऽयं बलभद्रो यमिति लोकस्य विस्मयः

hāhākāro mahāñjajñe mahāraṁge tvanaṁtaram kṛṣṇo'yaṁ balabhadro yamiti lokasya vismayaḥ

Immediately thereafter a great clamor arose in that vast arena, the people's astonishment breaking out: 'This is Krishna! This is Balabhadra!'

Verse 45 (vishnu.5.20.45)

सोऽयं येन हता घोरा पूतना बालघातिनी। क्षिप्तं तु शकटं येन भग्नौ तु यमलार्जुनौ

so'yaṁ yena hatā ghorā pūtanā bālaghātinī kṣiptaṁ tu śakaṭaṁ yena bhagnau tu yamalārjunau

'This is he who slew the terrible child-killer Putana, who overturned the cart, who broke the twin Arjuna trees.'

Verse 46 (vishnu.5.20.46)

सोयं यः कालियं नागं ममर्दारुह्य वालकः। धृतो गोवर्द्धनो येन सप्तरात्रं महागिरिः

soyaṁ yaḥ kāliyaṁ nāgaṁ mamardāruhya vālakaḥ dhṛto govarddhano yena saptarātraṁ mahāgiriḥ

'This is he who, though a mere child, mounted the serpent Kaliya and crushed him, who held aloft that great mountain Govardhana for seven whole nights.'

Verse 47 (vishnu.5.20.47)

अरिष्टो धेनुकः केशी लीलयैव महात्मना। निहता येन दुर्वृत्ता दृश्यतामेष सोऽच्युतः

ariṣṭo dhenukaḥ keśī līlayaiva mahātmanā nihatā yena durvṛttā dṛśyatāmeṣa so'cyutaḥ

'The wicked demons Arishta, Dhenuka, and Keshi were slain by this great soul merely in sport — behold, this is that very Achyuta.'

Verse 48 (vishnu.5.20.48)

अयं चास्य महाबाहुर्बलभद्रोऽग्रतोऽग्रजः। प्रयाति लीलया योषिन्मनोनयननंदनः

ayaṁ cāsya mahābāhurbalabhadro'grato'grajaḥ prayāti līlayā yoṣinmanonayananaṁdanaḥ

'And this, walking ahead of him, mighty-armed, is his elder brother Balabhadra, moving along at ease, the delight of every woman's eyes and heart.'

Verse 49 (vishnu.5.20.49)

अयं स कथ्यते प्राज्ञैः पुराणार्थविशारदैः। गोपालो यादवं वंशं मग्नमभ्यद्धरिष्यति

ayaṁ sa kathyate prājñaiḥ purāṇārthaviśāradaiḥ gopālo yādavaṁ vaṁśaṁ magnamabhyaddhariṣyati

'This is the one of whom the wise, skilled in the meaning of the Puranas, say: this cowherd shall raise up the Yadava race from its sinking ruin.'

Verse 50 (vishnu.5.20.50)

अयं हि सर्वलोकस्य विष्णोरखिलजन्मनः। अवतीर्णो महीमंशो नूनं भारहरो भुवः

ayaṁ hi sarvalokasya viṣṇorakhilajanmanaḥ avatīrṇo mahīmaṁśo nūnaṁ bhāraharo bhuvaḥ

'Surely this is a very portion of Vishnu, the source of every being, the Lord of all worlds, descended to earth to lift away her burden.'

Verse 51 (vishnu.5.20.51)

इत्येवं वर्णिते पौरै रामे कृष्णे च तत्क्षणात्। उरस्तताप देवक्याः स्नेहस्नुतपयोधरम्

ityevaṁ varṇite paurai rāme kṛṣṇe ca tatkṣaṇāt urastatāpa devakyāḥ snehasnutapayodharam

As the townsfolk thus described Rama and Krishna, that very instant Devaki's heart burned with longing, and her breasts, moved by tenderness, grew moist.

Verse 52 (vishnu.5.20.52)

महोत्सवमिवासाद्य पुत्राननविलोकनात्। युवेव वसुदेवोऽभूद्विहायाभ्यागतां जराम्

mahotsavamivāsādya putrānanavilokanāt yuveva vasudevo'bhūdvihāyābhyāgatāṁ jarām

As if he had come upon a great festival at the very sight of his son's face, Vasudeva seemed to cast off the old age that had come upon him and grow young once more.

Verse 53 (vishnu.5.20.53)

विस्तारिताक्षियुगलो राजांतःपुरयोषिताम्। नागरस्त्रीसमूहश्च द्रष्टुं न विरराम तम्

vistāritākṣiyugalo rājāṁtaḥpurayoṣitām nāgarastrīsamūhaśca draṣṭuṁ na virarāma tam

The women of the king's inner chambers and the whole gathering of townswomen, their eyes opened wide, could not have their fill of gazing upon him.

Verse 54 (vishnu.5.20.54)

सख्यः पश्यत कृष्णस्य मुखमत्यरुणेक्षणम्। गजयुद्धकृतायासस्वेदांबुकणिकाचितम्

sakhyaḥ paśyata kṛṣṇasya mukhamatyaruṇekṣaṇam gajayuddhakṛtāyāsasvedāṁbukaṇikācitam

'Friends, behold Krishna's face, its eyes so red, dotted with beads of sweat born of his exertion in the fight with the elephant.'

Verse 55 (vishnu.5.20.55)

विकासिशरदंभोजमपश्यामजलोक्षितम्। परिभूयं स्थितं जन्म सफलं क्रियतां दृशः

vikāsiśaradaṁbhojamapaśyāmajalokṣitam paribhūyaṁ sthitaṁ janma saphalaṁ kriyatāṁ dṛśaḥ

'Like a fully-bloomed autumn lotus fresh-sprinkled with dew, this face stands there, surpassing all else — make your birth, make your very eyes, fruitful now.'

Verse 56 (vishnu.5.20.56)

श्रीवत्सांकं महद्धाम बालस्यैतद्विलोक्यताम्। विपक्षक्षपणं वक्षो भुजयुग्मं च भामिनि

śrīvatsāṁkaṁ mahaddhāma bālasyaitadvilokyatām vipakṣakṣapaṇaṁ vakṣo bhujayugmaṁ ca bhāmini

'O radiant one, behold this boy's chest, marked with Shrivatsa, that great splendor which lays low every enemy, and behold too the pair of his arms.'

Verse 57 (vishnu.5.20.57)

किं न पश्यसि दुग्धेंदुमृणालधवलाकृतिम्। बलभद्रमिमं नीलपरिधानमुपागतम्

kiṁ na paśyasi dugdheṁdumṛṇāladhavalākṛtim balabhadramimaṁ nīlaparidhānamupāgatam

'Do you not see this Balabhadra, his form white as milk, as the moon, as a lotus-stalk, now clad in dark blue garments?'

Verse 58 (vishnu.5.20.58)

वल्गतामुष्टिकेनैव चाणूरेण तथा सखि। क्रीडतो बलभद्रस्य हरेर्हास्यं विलोक्यताम्

valgatāmuṣṭikenaiva cāṇūreṇa tathā sakhi krīḍato balabhadrasya harerhāsyaṁ vilokyatām

'O friend, look at the laughter of Balabhadra and Hari, sporting playfully against the leaping Mushtika and Chanura.'

Verse 59 (vishnu.5.20.59)

सख्यः पश्यत चाणूरं नियुद्धार्थमयं हरिः। समुपैति न संत्यत्र किं वृद्धा मुक्तकारिणः

sakhyaḥ paśyata cāṇūraṁ niyuddhārthamayaṁ hariḥ samupaiti na saṁtyatra kiṁ vṛddhā muktakāriṇaḥ

'Friends, look — Hari here is approaching Chanura for the wrestling match; are there no elders present here at all, who might set him free of this?'

Verse 60 (vishnu.5.20.60)

क्व यौवनोन्मुखीभूतसुकुमारतनुर्हरिः। क्व वज्रकठिनाभोगशरीरोऽयं महासुरः

kva yauvanonmukhībhūtasukumāratanurhariḥ kva vajrakaṭhinābhogaśarīro'yaṁ mahāsuraḥ

'On the one hand this Hari, his tender body only now turning toward youth — and on the other, this great demon, his body vast and hard as a thunderbolt!'

Verse 61 (vishnu.5.20.61)

इमौ सुललितैरंगैर्वर्त्तेते नवयौवनौ। दैतेयमल्लाश्चाणूरप्रमुखास्त्वतिदारुणाः

imau sulalitairaṁgairvarttete navayauvanau daiteyamallāścāṇūrapramukhāstvatidāruṇāḥ

'These two here stand in the first bloom of youth, their limbs still delicate and graceful, while these demon-wrestlers led by Chanura are utterly fearsome.'

Verse 62 (vishnu.5.20.62)

नियुद्धप्राश्निकानां तु महानेष व्यतिक्रमः। यद्बालबलिनोर्युद्धं मध्यस्थैस्समुपेक्ष्यते

niyuddhaprāśnikānāṁ tu mahāneṣa vyatikramaḥ yadbālabalinoryuddhaṁ madhyasthaissamupekṣyate

'This indeed is a grave failing on the part of the match's umpires, that they, as neutral judges, allow this fight between such unequal combatants to go unchecked.'

Verse 63 (vishnu.5.20.63)

श्रीपराशर उवाच। इत्थं पुरस्त्रीलोकस्व वदतश्चालयन्भुवम्। ववल्ग बद्धकक्ष्यॐतर्जनस्य भगवान्हरिः

śrīparāśara uvāca itthaṁ purastrīlokasva vadataścālayanbhuvam vavalga baddhakakṣyaoṁtarjanasya bhagavānhariḥ

Parashara said: Even as the city's women were speaking thus, the Blessed Hari, his garment girded tight, leapt forward before the eyes of the assembled crowd, making the very earth tremble.

Verse 64 (vishnu.5.20.64)

बलभद्रोऽपि चास्फोट्य ववल्गललितं तथा। पदेपदे तथा भूमिर्यन्न शीर्णा तदद्भुतम्

balabhadro'pi cāsphoṭya vavalgalalitaṁ tathā padepade tathā bhūmiryanna śīrṇā tadadbhutam

Balabhadra too clapped his arms and leapt as gracefully; and it was itself a wonder that the earth was not shattered at every step of his.

Verse 65 (vishnu.5.20.65)

चाणूरेण ततः कृष्णो ययुधेऽमितविक्रमः। नियुद्धकुशलो दैत्यो बलभद्रेण मुष्टिकः

cāṇūreṇa tataḥ kṛṣṇo yayudhe'mitavikramaḥ niyuddhakuśalo daityo balabhadreṇa muṣṭikaḥ

Then Krishna, of measureless might, fought against Chanura, while the wrestling-skilled demon Mushtika fought against Balabhadra.

Verse 66 (vishnu.5.20.66)

सन्निपातावधूतैस्तु चाणूरेण समं हरिः। प्रक्षेपणैर्मुष्टिभिश्च कीलवज्रनिपातनैः

sannipātāvadhūtaistu cāṇūreṇa samaṁ hariḥ prakṣepaṇairmuṣṭibhiśca kīlavajranipātanaiḥ

Hari, grappling with Chanura, through clashing collisions, through throws and blows of the fist, through hammer-like strikes hard as the thunderbolt —

Verse 67 (vishnu.5.20.67)

पादोद्धूतैः प्रमृष्टैश्च तयोर्युद्धमभून्महत्

pādoddhūtaiḥ pramṛṣṭaiśca tayoryuddhamabhūnmahat

and through blows raised and scraped with the feet — thus did the battle between the two of them grow fierce and great.

Verse 68 (vishnu.5.20.68)

अशस्त्रमतिघोरं तत्तयोर्युद्धं सुदारुणम्। बलप्राणविनिष्पाद्यं समाजोत्सवसन्निधौ

aśastramatighoraṁ tattayoryuddhaṁ sudāruṇam balaprāṇaviniṣpādyaṁ samājotsavasannidhau

That fight between them, weaponless yet utterly terrible and fierce, was to be decided, there before the assembled festival crowd, by strength and life-breath alone.

Verse 69 (vishnu.5.20.69)

यावद्यावच्च चाणूरो युयुधे हरिणा सह। प्राणहानिमवापाग्र्यां तावत्तावल्लवाल्लवम्

yāvadyāvacca cāṇūro yuyudhe hariṇā saha prāṇahānimavāpāgryāṁ tāvattāvallavāllavam

The more Chanura fought on with Hari, the more, moment by moment, he lost his finest vital strength.

Verse 70 (vishnu.5.20.70)

कृष्णोऽपि युयुधे तेन लीलयैव जगन्मयः। खेदाच्चालयता कोपान्निजशेखरकेसरम्

kṛṣṇo'pi yuyudhe tena līlayaiva jaganmayaḥ khedāccālayatā kopānnijaśekharakesaram

Krishna too, the very form of the universe, fought on with him as if in mere sport, shaking only the hair at his crown, as if in weary anger.

Verse 71 (vishnu.5.20.71)

बलक्षयं विवृद्धिं च दृष्ट्वा चाणूकृष्णयोः। वारयामास तूर्याणि कंसः कोपपरायणः

balakṣayaṁ vivṛddhiṁ ca dṛṣṭvā cāṇūkṛṣṇayoḥ vārayāmāsa tūryāṇi kaṁsaḥ kopaparāyaṇaḥ

Seeing Chanura's strength failing and Krishna's growing, Kamsa, overcome with rage, ordered the musical instruments silenced.

Verse 72 (vishnu.5.20.72)

मृदंगादिषु तूर्येषु प्रतिषिद्धेषु तत्क्षणात्। खे संगतान्यवाद्यंत देवतूर्याण्यनेकशः

mṛdaṁgādiṣu tūryeṣu pratiṣiddheṣu tatkṣaṇāt khe saṁgatānyavādyaṁta devatūryāṇyanekaśaḥ

The instant the drums and other instruments were silenced, in the sky above, many divine instruments, gathered together, began to sound of their own accord.

Verse 73 (vishnu.5.20.73)

जय गोविंद चाणूरं जहि केशव दानवम्। अंतर्द्धानगता देवास्तमूचुरतिहर्षिताः

jaya goviṁda cāṇūraṁ jahi keśava dānavam aṁtarddhānagatā devāstamūcuratiharṣitāḥ

'Victory, O Govinda! Slay this demon, O Keshava!' — thus, hidden from sight, the gods, filled with rapture, called out to him.

Verse 74 (vishnu.5.20.74)

चाणूरेण चिरं कालं पीडित्वा मधुसूदनः। उत्पाट्य भ्रामयामास तद्वधाय कृतोद्यमः

cāṇūreṇa ciraṁ kālaṁ pīḍitvā madhusūdanaḥ utpāṭya bhrāmayāmāsa tadvadhāya kṛtodyamaḥ

Having tormented Chanura for a long while, Madhusudana, now resolved upon his death, lifted him up and began to whirl him about.

Verse 75 (vishnu.5.20.75)

भ्रामयित्वा शतगुणं दैत्यमल्लममित्रजित्। भूमावास्फोटयामास गगने गतजीवितम्

bhrāmayitvā śataguṇaṁ daityamallamamitrajit bhūmāvāsphoṭayāmāsa gagane gatajīvitam

The conqueror of foes, having whirled that demon-wrestler round a hundredfold, dashed him upon the ground, his life already gone even while yet in the air.

Verse 76 (vishnu.5.20.76)

भूमावास्फोटितस्तेन चाणूरः शतधाऽभवत्। रक्तस्रावमहापंकां चकार च तदा भुवम्

bhūmāvāsphoṭitastena cāṇūraḥ śatadhā'bhavat raktasrāvamahāpaṁkāṁ cakāra ca tadā bhuvam

Dashed upon the ground, Chanura shattered into a hundred pieces, and the earth, streaming with his blood, became one great morass.

Verse 77 (vishnu.5.20.77)

बलदेवोऽपि तत्कालं मुष्टिकेन महाबलः। युयुधे दैत्यमल्लेन चाणूरेण यथा हरिः

baladevo'pi tatkālaṁ muṣṭikena mahābalaḥ yuyudhe daityamallena cāṇūreṇa yathā hariḥ

At that same time, the mighty Baladeva too was fighting the demon-wrestler Mushtika, just as Hari had fought Chanura.

Verse 78 (vishnu.5.20.78)

सोऽप्येनं मुष्टिना मूर्ध्नि वक्षस्याहत्य जानुना। पातयित्वा धरापृष्ठे निष्पिपेष गतायुषम्

so'pyenaṁ muṣṭinā mūrdhni vakṣasyāhatya jānunā pātayitvā dharāpṛṣṭhe niṣpipeṣa gatāyuṣam

He too, striking him on the head with his fist and on the chest with his knee, felled him to the earth and ground him down until the life had left his body.

Verse 79 (vishnu.5.20.79)

कृष्णस्तोशलकं भूयो मल्लराजं महाबलम्। वाममुष्टिप्रहारेण पातयामास भूतले

kṛṣṇastośalakaṁ bhūyo mallarājaṁ mahābalam vāmamuṣṭiprahāreṇa pātayāmāsa bhūtale

Then Krishna, with a single blow of his left fist, felled to the ground the mighty king of wrestlers, Toshalaka, as well.

Verse 80 (vishnu.5.20.80)

चाणूरे नहते मल्ले मुष्टेके विनिपातिते। नीते क्षयं तोशलके सर्वे मल्लाः प्रदुद्रु वुः

cāṇūre nahate malle muṣṭeke vinipātite nīte kṣayaṁ tośalake sarve mallāḥ pradudru vuḥ

With Chanura slain, Mushtika struck down, and Toshalaka too brought to ruin, all the remaining wrestlers fled in terror.

Verse 81 (vishnu.5.20.81)

ववल्गतुस्ततो रंगे कृष्णसंकर्षणावुभौ। समानवयसो गोपान्बलादाकृष्य हर्षितौ

vavalgatustato raṁge kṛṣṇasaṁkarṣaṇāvubhau samānavayaso gopānbalādākṛṣya harṣitau

Then Krishna and Sankarshana, both filled with delight, drew their fellow cowherds of like age forcibly into the arena and leapt about there with them.

Verse 82 (vishnu.5.20.82)

कंसोऽपि कोपरक्ताक्षः प्राहोच्चैर्व्यायतान्नरान्। गोपावेतौ समाजौघान्निष्क्राम्येतां बलादितः

kaṁso'pi koparaktākṣaḥ prāhoccairvyāyatānnarān gopāvetau samājaughānniṣkrāmyetāṁ balāditaḥ

Kamsa too, his eyes red with rage, cried out loudly to his sturdy men: 'Drive these two cowherds forcibly out from this assembled crowd!'

Verse 83 (vishnu.5.20.83)

नंदोऽपि गृह्यतां पापो निर्गलैरायसैरिह। अवृद्धार्हेण दंडेन वसुदेवोऽपि बध्यताम्

naṁdo'pi gṛhyatāṁ pāpo nirgalairāyasairiha avṛddhārheṇa daṁḍena vasudevo'pi badhyatām

'Let that sinner Nanda too be seized here and bound in iron fetters, and let Vasudeva also be bound — with a punishment unfit even for an old man.'

Verse 84 (vishnu.5.20.84)

वल्गंति गोपाः कृष्णेन ये चेमे सहिताः पुरः। गावो हियन्तामेतेषां यच्चास्ति वसु किंचन

valgaṁti gopāḥ kṛṣṇena ye ceme sahitāḥ puraḥ gāvo hiyantāmeteṣāṁ yaccāsti vasu kiṁcana

'As for these cowherds already leaping about here alongside Krishna, let their cattle be seized, and whatever wealth they may possess be taken away too.'

Verse 85 (vishnu.5.20.85)

एवमाज्ञापयानं तु प्रहस्य मधुसूदनः। उत्प्लुत्यारुह्य तं मंचं कंसं जग्राह वेगतः

evamājñāpayānaṁ tu prahasya madhusūdanaḥ utplutyāruhya taṁ maṁcaṁ kaṁsaṁ jagrāha vegataḥ

Smiling at Kamsa as he gave these orders, Madhusudana leapt up onto that very gallery and seized Kamsa with swift force.

Verse 86 (vishnu.5.20.86)

केशेष्वाकृष्य विगलत्किरीटमवनीतले। स कंसं पातयामास तस्योपरि पपात च

keśeṣvākṛṣya vigalatkirīṭamavanītale sa kaṁsaṁ pātayāmāsa tasyopari papāta ca

Dragging him by the hair, his crown slipping loose, he flung Kamsa down upon the ground, and fell himself upon him there.

Verse 87 (vishnu.5.20.87)

निःशेषजगदाधारगुरुणा पततोपरि। कृष्णेन त्याजितः प्राणानुग्रसेनात्मजो नृपः

niḥśeṣajagadādhāraguruṇā patatopari kṛṣṇena tyājitaḥ prāṇānugrasenātmajo nṛpaḥ

Falling upon him, heavy as he was with the weight of sustaining the entire universe, Krishna made that king, Ugrasena's son, give up his very life-breath.

Verse 88 (vishnu.5.20.88)

मृतस्य केशेषु तदा गृहीत्वा मधुसूदनः। चकर्ष देहं कंसस्य रंगमध्ये महाबलः

mṛtasya keśeṣu tadā gṛhītvā madhusūdanaḥ cakarṣa dehaṁ kaṁsasya raṁgamadhye mahābalaḥ

Then, seizing the dead man by the hair, the mighty Madhusudana dragged Kamsa's body right through the middle of the arena.

Verse 89 (vishnu.5.20.89)

गौरवेणातिमहता परिखा तेन कृष्यता। कृता कंसस्य देहेन वेगेनेव महांभसः

gauraveṇātimahatā parikhā tena kṛṣyatā kṛtā kaṁsasya dehena vegeneva mahāṁbhasaḥ

Dragged along with such immense weight, Kamsa's body carved out, as it were, a trench in the earth, just as the force of some great flood might.

Verse 90 (vishnu.5.20.90)

कंसे गृहीते कृष्णेन तद्भ्राताऽभ्यागतो रुषा। सुनामा बलभद्रेण लीलयैव निपातितः

kaṁse gṛhīte kṛṣṇena tadbhrātā'bhyāgato ruṣā sunāmā balabhadreṇa līlayaiva nipātitaḥ

When Kamsa was seized by Krishna, his brother Sunama came forward in fury, but Balabhadra struck him down as well, with mere ease.

Verse 91 (vishnu.5.20.91)

ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वमासीत्तद्रंगमंडलम्। अवज्ञया हतं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णेन मथुरेश्वरम्

tato hāhākṛtaṁ sarvamāsīttadraṁgamaṁḍalam avajñayā hataṁ dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇena mathureśvaram

The whole of that arena broke out in cries of dismay, seeing the lord of Mathura slain by Krishna with such mere disdain.

Verse 92 (vishnu.5.20.92)

कृष्णोऽपि वसुदेवस्य पादौ जग्राह सत्वरः। देवक्याश्च महाबाहुर्बलदेवसहायवान्

kṛṣṇo'pi vasudevasya pādau jagrāha satvaraḥ devakyāśca mahābāhurbaladevasahāyavān

Then the mighty-armed Krishna, with Baladeva at his side, at once fell and clasped the feet of both Vasudeva and Devaki.

Verse 93 (vishnu.5.20.93)

उत्थाप्य वसुदेवस्तं देवकी च जनार्दनम्। स्मृतजन्मोक्तवचनौ तावेव प्रणतौ स्थितौ

utthāpya vasudevastaṁ devakī ca janārdanam smṛtajanmoktavacanau tāveva praṇatau sthitau

Vasudeva and Devaki both raised Janardana up; and remembering now the words spoken at the time of his birth, the two of them stood there, bowed before him instead.

Verse 94 (vishnu.5.20.94)

श्रीवसुदेव उवाच। प्रसीद सीदतां दत्तो देवानां यो वरः प्रभो। तथावयोः प्रसादेन कृतोद्धारस्स केशव

śrīvasudeva uvāca prasīda sīdatāṁ datto devānāṁ yo varaḥ prabho tathāvayoḥ prasādena kṛtoddhārassa keśava

Sri Vasudeva said: 'Be gracious, O Lord — that boon once given by the gods to those in distress has, O Keshava, through your grace to the two of us, now been fulfilled in this deliverance.'

Verse 95 (vishnu.5.20.95)

आराधितो यद्भगवानवतीर्णो गृहे मम। दुर्वृत्तनिधनार्थाय तेन नः पावितं कुलम्

ārādhito yadbhagavānavatīrṇo gṛhe mama durvṛttanidhanārthāya tena naḥ pāvitaṁ kulam

'The Blessed Lord whom I had once worshipped has himself descended into my house for the destruction of this evil-doer — and by this our whole lineage has been made pure.'

Verse 96 (vishnu.5.20.96)

त्वमंतः सर्वभूतानां सर्वभूतमयस्थितः। प्रवर्त्तेते समस्तात्मंस्त्वत्तो भूतभविष्यती

tvamaṁtaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ sarvabhūtamayasthitaḥ pravarttete samastātmaṁstvatto bhūtabhaviṣyatī

'You dwell within all beings, present in the very form of all that exists; O Self of all, from you alone both what has been and what is yet to be take their course.'

Verse 97 (vishnu.5.20.97)

यज्ञैस्त्वमिज्यसेऽचिंत्य सर्वदेवमयाच्युत। त्वमेव यज्ञो यष्टा च यज्वनां परमेश्वरः

yajñaistvamijyase'ciṁtya sarvadevamayācyuta tvameva yajño yaṣṭā ca yajvanāṁ parameśvaraḥ

'O Achyuta, O inconceivable one, you are worshipped through sacrifices, you who are the very form of all the gods; you yourself are the sacrifice, the offerer, and the Supreme Lord of those who sacrifice.'

Verse 98 (vishnu.5.20.98)

समुद्भवस्समस्तस्य जगतस्त्वं जनार्दन

samudbhavassamastasya jagatastvaṁ janārdana

'O Janardana, you are the very source from which this entire universe has come forth.'

Verse 99 (vishnu.5.20.99)

सापह्नवं मम मनो यदेतत्त्वयि जायते। देवक्याश्चात्मजप्रीत्या तदत्यंतविडंबना

sāpahnavaṁ mama mano yadetattvayi jāyate devakyāścātmajaprītyā tadatyaṁtaviḍaṁbanā

'And yet this concealment that still rises in my mind toward you — born of a father's affection for Devaki's own son — is itself the greatest of ironies.'

Verse 100 (vishnu.5.20.100)

क्व कर्त्ता सर्वभूतानामनादिनिधनो भवान्। क्व मे मनुष्यकस्यैषा जिह्वा पुत्रेति वक्ष्यति

kva karttā sarvabhūtānāmanādinidhano bhavān kva me manuṣyakasyaiṣā jihvā putreti vakṣyati

'On the one hand you, the maker of all beings, without beginning or end — and on the other, how could this tongue of mine, a mere mortal's, ever call you "son"!'

Verse 101 (vishnu.5.20.101)

जगदेतज्जगन्नाथ संभूतमखिलं यतः। कया युक्त्या विना मायां सोऽस्मत्तः संभविष्यति

jagadetajjagannātha saṁbhūtamakhilaṁ yataḥ kayā yuktyā vinā māyāṁ so'smattaḥ saṁbhaviṣyati

'O Lord of the world, by what possible reasoning, apart from your own maya, could you, from whom this entire universe has come into being, yourself have been born from us?'

Verse 102 (vishnu.5.20.102)

यस्मिन्प्रतिष्ठितं सर्वं जगत्स्थावरजंगमम्। स कोष्ठोत्संगशयनो मनुष्याज्जायते कथम्

yasminpratiṣṭhitaṁ sarvaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṁgamam sa koṣṭhotsaṁgaśayano manuṣyājjāyate katham

'He in whom this whole world of the moving and the unmoving is established — how could he be born from a mere human, lying cradled within a womb?'

Verse 103 (vishnu.5.20.103)

स त्वं प्रसीद परमेश्वर पाहि विश्वमंशावतारकरणैर्न ममासि पुत्रः। आब्रह्मपादपमिदं जगदेतदीश त्वत्तो विमोहयसि किं पुरुषोत्तमास्मान्

sa tvaṁ prasīda parameśvara pāhi viśvamaṁśāvatārakaraṇairna mamāsi putraḥ ābrahmapādapamidaṁ jagadetadīśa tvatto vimohayasi kiṁ puruṣottamāsmān

'Be gracious then, O Supreme Lord, and protect this universe; by merely taking birth as a portion-incarnation you cannot truly be my son. O Lord, this whole world, from Brahma down to the very trees, is pervaded by you alone — why then, O Purushottama, do you bewilder us so?'

Verse 104 (vishnu.5.20.104)

मायाविमोहितदृशा तनयो ममेति कंसाद्भयं कृतमपास्तभयोऽतितीव्रम्। नीतोऽसि गोकुलमरातिभया कुलेन वृद्धिं गतोऽसि मम नास्ति ममत्वमीश

māyāvimohitadṛśā tanayo mameti kaṁsādbhayaṁ kṛtamapāstabhayo'titīvram nīto'si gokulamarātibhayā kulena vṛddhiṁ gato'si mama nāsti mamatvamīśa

'It was only with sight deluded by your own maya that I, thinking "he is my son," felt such intense fear of Kamsa — though you yourself are beyond all fear. Out of fear of the enemy you were taken away to Gokula, and there you grew up within that family — O Lord, in truth I hold no claim of ownership over you at all.'

Verse 105 (vishnu.5.20.105)

कर्माणि रुद्रमरुदश्विशतक्रतूनां साध्यानि यस्य न भवंति निरीक्षितानि। त्वं विष्णुरीश जगतामुपकारहेतोः प्राप्तोसि नः परिगतो विगतो हि मोहः

karmāṇi rudramarudaśviśatakratūnāṁ sādhyāni yasya na bhavaṁti nirīkṣitāni tvaṁ viṣṇurīśa jagatāmupakārahetoḥ prāptosi naḥ parigato vigato hi mohaḥ

'You whose deeds not even Rudra, the Maruts, the Ashvins, or hundred-sacrifice Indra can accomplish, even having witnessed them — you, O Lord, are that very Vishnu, who has come to us for the world's own good. Our delusion is now wholly gone; we understand it fully.'
