Chapter 20All chaptersChapter 22

Verse 1 (vishnu.5.21.1)

tau samutpannavijñānau bhagavatkarmmadarśanāt devakīvasudevau tu dṛṣṭvā māyāṁ punarhariḥ mohāya yaducakrasya vitatāna sa vaiṣṇavīma

Devaki and Vasudeva had, through witnessing these deeds of the Blessed Lord, attained true understanding; yet Hari, once more, spread forth his Vaishnavi maya, so as to bewilder the Yadu race.

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.21.2)

uvāca cāmba bhostāta cirādutkaṇṭhitena me bhavantau kaṁsabhītena dṛṣṭau saṅkarṣaṇena ca

He said: 'O mother! O father! It is only now, after this long time of yearning, that you two have at last been seen by Sankarshana and myself — fearful as we were of Kamsa.'

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.21.3)

kurvvatāṁ yāti yaḥ kālo mātāpitrorapūjanam tatkhaṇḍamāyuṣo vyarthamasādhūnāṁ hi jāyate

'Whatever time passes without honoring one's father and mother becomes a wasted portion of one's very lifespan — a fate that befalls only the wicked.'

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.21.4)

gurudevadvijātīnāṁ mātāpitrośca pūjanam kurvvatāṁ saphalaṁ janma dehināṁ tāta jāyate

'Only for those beings who honor their teachers, the gods, the twice-born, and their own father and mother, does their very birth become fruitful, O father.'

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.21.5)

tat kṣantavyamidaṁ sarvamatikramakṛtaṁ pitaḥ kaṁsapratāpavīryyābhyāmāvayoḥ paravaśyayoḥ

'O father, whatever transgression the two of us committed, held as we were under the sway of Kamsa's might and power, all of it must now be forgiven.'

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.21.6)

ityuktvātha praṇamyobhau yaduvṛddhānanukramāt yathāvadabhipūjyātha cakratuḥ pauramānanam

Having said this, and bowing in due order to the elders of the Yadu clan, and honoring them as was fitting, they then paid honor to the citizens as well.

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.21.7)

kaṁsapatnyastataḥ kaṁsaṁ parivāryyahataṁ bhuvi vilepurmātaraścāsya duḥkhaśokapariplutāḥ

Then Kamsa's wives, gathering round him where he lay slain upon the ground, wept there, drowned in grief and sorrow, together with his mothers.

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.21.8)

bahuprakāramatyarthaṁ paścāttāpāturo hariḥ tāḥ samāśvāsayāmāsa svayamasrāvilekṣaṇaḥ

Hari himself, his heart deeply moved with compassion in many ways, his own eyes clouded with tears, consoled them all.

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.21.9)

ugrasenaṁ tato bandhānmumoca madhusūdanaḥ abhyaṣiñcat tathaivainaṁ nijarājye hatātmajam

Then Madhusudana released Ugrasena from his bonds, and, though Ugrasena had lost his own son, anointed him once more to his own kingdom.

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.21.10)

rājyābhiṣiktaḥ kṛṣṇena yadusiṁhaḥ sutasya saḥ cakāra pretakāryyāṇi ye cānye tatra ghātitāḥ

Anointed to the kingdom by Krishna, that lion among the Yadus performed the funeral rites for his son, and for the others who had been slain there as well.

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.21.11)

kṛtordhvadaihikaṁ cainaṁ siṁhāsanagataṁ hariḥ uvācājñāpaya vibho yat kāryamaviśaṅkitaḥ

Having had his funeral rites duly performed, Hari, fearlessly, said to him as he sat upon the throne: 'O lord, command whatever task is to be done.'

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.21.12)

yayātiśāpāda vaṁśo'yamarājyārho'pi sāmpratam mayi bhṛtye sthite devānājñāpayatu kiṁ nupaiḥ

'Because of Yayati's curse, this lineage of ours is not, even now, fit to rule; consider me your servant, and command what the gods themselves would command — what need have we of mere kings?'

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.21.13)

ityuktvā so'smaradvāyumājagāma sa tatkṣaṇāt uvāca cainaṁ bhagavān keśavaḥ kāryamānuṣaḥ

Having said this, he called Vayu to mind, and Vayu came there that very instant; and the Blessed Keshava, in his human form, said to him —

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.21.14)

gacchendraṁ brūhi vāyo tvamalaṁ garveṇa vāsava dīyatāmugrasenāya sudharmā bhavatā sabhā

'Go, O Vayu, to Indra, and say: O Vasava, enough now of your pride — let the assembly hall Sudharma be given over to Ugrasena.'

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.21.15)

kṛṣṇo bravīti rājārhametadratnamanuttamam sudharmākhyā sabhā yuktamasyāṁ yadubhirāsitum

'Krishna says: this incomparable jewel is fit for a king alone; it is proper that the Yadavas should sit in this assembly called Sudharma.'

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.21.16)

ityuktaḥ pavano gatvā sarvvamāha śacīpatim dadau so'pi sudharmmākhyāṁ sabhāṁ vāyoḥ purandaraḥ

Thus addressed, the wind-god went and told everything to the husband of Shachi; and Purandara too, in turn, gave the assembly hall called Sudharma over to Vayu.

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.21.17)

vāyunā cāhṛtāṁ divyāṁ sabhāṁ te yadupuṅgavāḥ bubhujuḥ sarvvaratnāḍhyāṁ govindabhujasaṁśrayāt

That divine assembly hall, brought there by Vayu, rich with every kind of jewel, those foremost of the Yadus enjoyed thereafter, under the shelter of Govinda's own arms.

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.21.18)

viditākhilavijñānau sarvvajñānamayāvapi śiṣyācāryyakramaṁ vīrau khyāpayantau yadūttamau

Though they already possessed every knowledge, and were themselves the very substance of all wisdom, those two heroic best of the Yadus, in order to demonstrate to the world the proper order of student and teacher, went to a guru.

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.21.19)

tataḥ sāndīpaniṁ kāśyamavantīpuravāsinam astrārthaṁ jagmaturvīrau baladevajanārdanau

Then those two heroes, Baladeva and Janardana, went to Sandipani, son of Kashya, who dwelt in the city of Avanti, in order to obtain the science of weapons.

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.21.20)

tasya śiṣyatvamabhyetya guruvṛttiparau hi tau darśayāñcakraturvīrāvācāramakhile jane

Accepting discipleship under him, and devoting themselves to the service of their guru, those two heroes demonstrated before all people the proper conduct of a student.

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.21.21)

sarahasyaṁ dhanurvedaṁ sasaṁgrahamadhīyatām ahorātraiścatuḥṣaṣṭyā tadadbhutamabhūddvija

O brahmin, they mastered the entire science of archery, together with its secret lore and its condensed formulations, in just sixty-four days and nights — a thing of true wonder.

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.21.22)

sāndīpanirasambhāvyaṁ tayoḥ karmātimānuṣam vicintya tau tadā mene prāptau candradivākarau

Sandipani, considering their superhuman feat scarcely credible, reflected upon it, and came to think that the very Moon and Sun themselves had come to him as pupils.

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.21.23)

astragrāmamaśeṣañca proktamātramavāpya tau ūcaturvriyatāṁ yā te dātavyā gurudakṣiṇā

Having obtained the entire array of weapons merely upon a single telling, the two of them said: 'Ask now whatever guru's fee is to be given.'

Verse 24 (vishnu.5.21.24)

so'pyatīndriyamālokya tayoḥ karmma mahāmatiḥ ayācata mṛtaṁ putraṁ prabhāse lavaṇārṇāve

Beholding this superhuman feat of theirs, the wise Sandipani asked for nothing but his own son, who had died in the salt ocean at Prabhasa.

Verse 25 (vishnu.5.21.25)

gṛhītāstrau tatastau tu sārghyahasto mahodadhiḥ uvāca na mayā putro hataḥ sāndīpaneriti

Now armed with their weapons, the two of them went there; and the great ocean, offering-water in hand, said: 'I have not slain Sandipani's son.'

Verse 26 (vishnu.5.21.26)

daityaḥ pañcajano nāma śaṅkharūpaḥ sa bālakam jagrāha so'sti salile mamaivāsurasūdana

'A demon named Panchajana, who takes the form of a conch, seized that boy; O slayer of asuras, he dwells here within my very waters.'

Verse 27 (vishnu.5.21.27)

ityukto'ntarjalaṁ gatvā hatvā pañcajanaṁ khalam kṛṣṇo jagrāha tasyāsthiprabhavaṁ śaṅkhamuttamam

Hearing this, Krishna went down into the water, slew that wicked Panchajana, and took up that finest of conches, formed from his very bones.

Verse 28 (vishnu.5.21.28)

yasya nādena daityānāṁ balahānirajāyata devānāṁ vavṛdhe tejo yātyadharmaśca saṁkṣayam

that conch by whose very sound the strength of demons wanes, the splendor of the gods grows, and unrighteousness itself is brought to ruin —

Verse 29 (vishnu.5.21.29)

taṁ pāñcajanyamāpūryya gatvā yamapurīṁ hariḥ baladevaśca balavān jitvā vaivasvataṁ yamam

Sounding that Panchajanya conch, Hari, together with the mighty Baladeva, went to the city of Yama and conquered even Vaivasvata Yama himself.

Verse 30 (vishnu.5.21.30)

taṁ bālaṁ yātanāsaṁsthaṁ yathāpūrvaśarīriṇam pitre pradattavān kṛṣṇo balaśca balināṁ varaḥ

Krishna and Bala, foremost among the mighty, brought that boy — still enduring his torment there, yet with his body just as it had been before — and gave him back to his father.

Verse 31 (vishnu.5.21.31)

mathurāṁ ca punaḥ prāptāvugrasenena pālitām prahṛṣṭapuruṣastrīkāvubhau rāmajanārdanau

To that city of Mathura, now guarded by Ugrasena, filled with joyful men and women, Rama and Janardana both returned once more.
