parāśara uvāca pradyumnādyā hareḥ putrā rukmiṇyāḥ kathitāstava bhānuṁ bhaimarikaṁ caiva satyabhāmā vyajāyata

Parashara said: The sons of Hari by Rukmini, beginning with Pradyumna, have already been told to you. Satyabhama bore Bhanu and Bhaimarika.

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.32.2)

dīptimantaḥ prayakṣādyā rohiṇyāstanayā hareḥ babhūvurjāmbavatyāṁ ca sāmbādyā bāhuśālinaḥ

By Rohini, Hari had sons Diptimat, Prayaksha, and others; and by Jambavati were born Samba and other mighty-armed sons.

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.32.3)

tanayā bhadravindādyā nāgnajityāṁ mahābalāḥ saṁgrāmajitpradhānāstu śaibyāyāścābhavan sutāḥ

By Nagnajiti were born mighty sons beginning with Bhadravinda; and by Shaibya were born sons headed by Sangramajit.

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.32.4)

vṛkādyāśca sutā mādryāṁ gātravatpramukhān sutān avāpa lakṣmaṇā putrāḥ kālindyāśca śrutādayaḥ

By Madri were born sons beginning with Vrika; Lakshmana had sons headed by Gatravat; and by Kalindi were born sons beginning with Shruta.

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.32.5)

anyāsāṁ caiva bhāryāṇāṁ samutpannāni cakriṇaḥ aṣṭāyutāni putrāṇāṁ sahasrāṇāṁ śataṁ tathā

And from his other wives as well, the wheel-bearer had eighty thousand sons, and a hundred thousand more besides.

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.32.6)

pradyumnaḥ prathamasteṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ rukmiṇīsutaḥ pradyumnād aniruddho'bhūd vajrastasmād ajāyata

Of all these, Pradyumna, son of Rukmini, was the foremost; from Pradyumna came Aniruddha, and from him was born Vajra.

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.32.7)

aniruddho raṇe ruddho baleḥ pautrīṁ mahābalaḥ bāṇasya tanayām ūṣām upayeme dvijottama

Aniruddha, never checked in battle, mighty, O foremost of the twice-born, married Usha, the daughter of Bana and granddaughter of Bali.

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.32.8)

yatra yuddham abhūd ghoraṁ hariśaṁkarayormahat chinnaṁ sahasraṁ bāhūnāṁ yatra bāṇasya cakriṇā

In the course of which there occurred a terrible, great battle between Hari and Shankara, in which the wheel-bearer severed a thousand of Bana's arms.

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.32.9)

maitreya uvāca kathaṁ yuddham abhūd brahmann uṣārthe harakṛṣṇayoḥ kathaṁ kṣayaṁ ca bāṇasya bāhūnāṁ kṛtavān hariḥ

Maitreya said: 'O Brahmin, how did the battle between Hara and Krishna come about over Usha? And how did Hari bring about the destruction of Bana's arms?'

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.32.10)

etat sarvaṁ mahābhāga mamākhyātuṁ tvam arhasi mahat kautūhalaṁ jātaṁ kathāṁ śrotum imāṁ hareḥ

'You should tell me all of this, O most fortunate one; a great curiosity has arisen in me to hear this tale of Hari.'

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.32.11)

parāśara uvāca uṣā bāṇasutā vipra pārvatīṁ saha śambhunā krīḍantīm upalakṣyoccaiḥ spṛhāṁ cakre tadāśrayām

Parashara said: O Brahmin, Usha, Bana's daughter, seeing Parvati at play together with Shambhu, was seized with an intense longing for that same union.

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.32.12)

tataḥ sakalacittajñā gaurī tām āha bhāminīm alam atyarthatāpena bhartrā tvam api raṁsyase

Then Gauri, who knows every heart, said to the lovely woman: 'Enough of such distress — you too shall have your delight with a husband.'

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.32.13)

ityukte sā tadā cakre kadeti matim ātmanaḥ ko vā bhartā mamety enāṁ punarapy āha pārvatī

Hearing this, the thought arose in her mind: 'When?' — 'Or who will be my husband?' — and Parvati spoke to her again:

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.32.14)

'O princess, whoever comes to you in a dream on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha and unites with you — he shall become your husband.'

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.32.15)

parāśara uvāca tasyāṁ tithau pumān svapne yathā devyā udīritam tathaivābhibhavaṁ cakre rāgaṁ cakre ca tatra sā

Parashara said: On that very day, exactly as the goddess had foretold, a man came to her in a dream and united with her, and she fell deeply in love with him.

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.32.16)

tataḥ prabuddhā puruṣam apaśyantī samutsukā kva gato'sīti nirlajjā maitreyoktavatī sakhīm

Then, O Maitreya, waking and not finding the man, filled with longing and past all shame, she cried out, as if to her friend, 'Where have you gone?'

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.32.17)

bāṇasya mantrī kumbhāṇḍaḥ citralekhā ca tatsutā tasyāḥ sakhy abhavat sā ca prāha ko'yaṁ tvayocyate

Bana's minister was Kumbhanda, and his daughter Chitralekha was Usha's friend; she said: 'Who is this you speak of?'

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.32.18)

yadā lajjākulā nāsyai kathayām āsa sā sakhī tadā viśvāsam ānīya sarvam evābhyavādayat

When, overcome with shame, she at first told her friend nothing, then, once her trust was won, she related the whole matter.

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.32.19)

viditārthāṁ tu tām āha punarūṣā yathoditam devyā tathaiva tatprāptau yo'bhyupāyaḥ kuruṣva tam

Once she understood the matter, Usha said to her again, recalling the goddess's own words: 'Devise, then, whatever means you can to help me attain him.'

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.32.20)

parāśara uvāca tataḥ paṭe surān daityān gandharvāṁśca pradhānataḥ manuṣyāṁścābhilikhyāsyai citralekhā vyadarśayat

Parashara said: Then Chitralekha drew, on a canvas, the chief gods, daityas, gandharvas, and men, and showed them to her.

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.32.21)

apāsya sā tu gandharvāṁstathoragasurāsurān manuṣyeṣu dadau dṛṣṭiṁ teṣv apy andhakavṛṣṇiṣu

Passing over the gandharvas, and likewise the nagas, gods, and asuras, she turned her gaze to the men, and among them, to the Andhakas and Vrishnis.

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.32.22)

kṛṣṇarāmau vilokyāsīt subhrūrlajjājaḍeva sā pradyumnadarśane vrīḍādṛṣṭiṁ ninye'nyato dvija

Seeing Krishna and Rama, O twice-born, the fair-browed girl seemed frozen with shame; and at the sight of Pradyumna too, shame turned her gaze away.

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.32.23)

dṛṣṭamātre tataḥ kānte pradyumnatanaye dvija dṛṣṭvātyarthavilāsinyā lajjā kvāpi nirākṛtā

But the very moment she saw her beloved, Pradyumna's own son, O twice-born, all her shame, playful and passionate as she was, vanished away entirely.

Verse 24 (vishnu.5.32.24)

so'yaṁ so'yam itīty ukte tayā sā yogagāminī yayau dvāravatīm ūṣāṁ samāśvāsya tataḥ sakhīm

'This is he — this is he!' When she said this, her friend, who could travel by mystic power, then, having comforted Usha, set off for Dvaravati.
