The Battle at Shonitapura

Chapter 32All chaptersChapter 34

Verse 1 (vishnu.5.33.1)

parāśara uvāca bāṇo'pi praṇipatyāgre maitreyāha trilocanam deva bāhusahasreṇa nirviṇṇo'haṁ vināhavam

Parashara said: O Maitreya, Bana too bowed before the three-eyed Shiva and said: 'O god, I am wearied, having a thousand arms yet no battle to use them in.'

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.33.2)

kaccin mamaiṣāṁ bāhūnāṁ sāphalyajanako raṇaḥ bhaviṣyati vinā yuddhaṁ bhārāya mama kiṁ bhujaiḥ

'Will there ever be a battle to make these arms of mine worthwhile? Without war, what are these arms to me but a burden?'

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.33.3)

śaṁkara uvāca mayūradhvajabhaṅgaste yadā bāṇa bhaviṣyati piśitāśijanānandaṁ prāpsyase tvaṁ tadā raṇam

Shankara said: 'When your peacock banner breaks, O Bana, then you shall have a battle so fierce it will gladden the flesh-eating spirits.'

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.33.4)

parāśara uvāca tataḥ praṇamya muditaḥ śambhum abhyāgato gṛham bhagnaṁ ca dhvajam ālokya hṛṣṭo harṣāntaraṁ yayau

Parashara said: Then, bowing to Shambhu, he returned home rejoicing; and seeing his banner broken, he was filled with still greater joy.

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.33.5)

etasminn eva kāle tu yogavidyābalena tam aniruddham athāninye citralekhā varāpsarāḥ

At this very moment, by the power of her yogic art, Chitralekha, lovely as a chief apsaras, brought Aniruddha there.

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.33.6)

kanyāntaḥpuramadhye taṁ ramamāṇaṁ sahoṣayā vijñāya rakṣiṇo gatvā śaśaṁsurdaityabhūpateḥ

When the guards learned that he was there in the maidens' inner apartments, enjoying himself with Usha, they went and reported it to the daitya king.

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.33.7)

vyādiṣṭaṁ kiṁkarāṇāṁ tu sainyaṁ tena mahātmanā jaghāna parighaṁ loham ādāya paravīrahā

Taking up an iron club, that great-souled slayer of enemy heroes struck down the army of servants that had been sent against him.

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.33.8)

hateṣu teṣu bāṇo'pi rathasthastadvadhodyataḥ yudhyamāno yathāśakti yadā vīryeṇa nirjitaḥ

When they had been slain, Bana too, mounted on his chariot, intent on his death, fought as best he could — but when he was overpowered by valor alone,

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.33.9)

māyayā yuyudhe tena sa tadā mantricoditaḥ tatastaṁ pannagāstreṇa babandha yadunandanam

— then, urged on by his minister, he resorted to sorcery, and bound that delight of the Yadus with a serpent-noose weapon.

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.33.10)

dvāravatyāṁ kva yāto'sāv aniruddheti jalpatām yadūnām ācacakṣe taṁ baddhaṁ bāṇena nāradaḥ

As the Yadavas in Dvaravati were asking one another, 'Where has Aniruddha gone?', Narada told them that he had been bound by Bana.

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.33.11)

taṁ śoṇitapure śrutvā nītaṁ vidyāvidagdhayā yoṣitā pratyayaṁ jagmuryādavā nāmarairiti

Hearing that a woman skilled in magical lore had carried him off to Shonitapura, the Yadavas, on the word of the immortals, came to believe it.

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.33.12)

tato garuḍam āruhya smṛtamātrāgataṁ hariḥ balapradyumnasahito bāṇasya prayayau puram

Then, mounting Garuda, who came the instant he was called to mind, Hari, together with Bala and Pradyumna, set out for Bana's city.

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.33.13)

purīpraveśe pramathairyuddham āsīn mahātmanaḥ yayau bāṇapurābhyāśaṁ nītvā tān saṁkṣayaṁ hariḥ

As they entered the city, a battle broke out between the great-souled Hari and the Pramathas, Shiva's hordes; having destroyed them, Hari advanced to the very outskirts of Bana's city.

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.33.14)

tatastripādastriśirā jvaro māheśvaro mahān bāṇarakṣārtham atyarthaṁ yuyudhe śārṅgadhanvanā

Then the great three-legged, three-headed Fever belonging to Maheshvara fought fiercely against the wielder of the Sharnga bow, in defense of Bana.

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.33.15)

tadbhasmasparśasaṁbhūtatāpaḥ kṛṣṇāṅgasaṁgamāt avāpa baladevo'pi śramam āmīlitekṣaṇaḥ

From the burning heat born of that Fever's touch of ash, spreading from contact with Krishna's own body, even Baladeva grew faint, his eyes half-closed with weariness.

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.33.16)

tataḥ sa yuddhyamānastu sahadevena śārṅgiṇā vaiṣṇavena jvareṇāśu kṛṣṇadehān nirākṛtaḥ

Then that Fever, still fighting against the wielder of the Sharnga bow, was swiftly driven off from Krishna's body by the Fever of Vishnu.

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.33.17)

nārāyaṇabhujāghātaparipīḍanavihvalam taṁ vīkṣya kṣamyatām asyety āha devaḥ pitāmahaḥ

Seeing him, Shiva's Fever, overwhelmed and distressed by the blows of Narayana's arm, the grandfather god Brahma said: 'Let him be forgiven.'

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.33.18)

tataśca kṣāntam eveti proktvā taṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ jvaram ātmany eva layaṁ ninye bhagavān madhusūdanaḥ

Then, saying 'He is indeed forgiven,' the Blessed Madhusudana withdrew that Fever of Vishnu back into himself.

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.33.19)

mama tvayā samaṁ yuddhaṁ ye smariṣyanti mānavāḥ vijvarāste bhaviṣyantīty uktvā cainaṁ yayau jvaraḥ

'Whatever men shall remember this battle of mine with you shall be free from fever' — so saying, that Fever departed from him.

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.33.20)

tato'gnīn bhagavān pañca jitvā nītvā tathā kṣayam dānavānāṁ balaṁ viṣṇuścūrṇayām āsa līlayā

Then the Blessed Vishnu, having conquered and destroyed the five fires, crushed the army of the danavas as if in mere sport.

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.33.21)

tataḥ samastasainyena daiteyānāṁ baleḥ sutaḥ yuyudhe śaṁkaraścaiva kārtikeyaśca śauriṇā

Then Bali's son, with the entire army of the daityas, and Shankara himself, and Kartikeya too, fought against Shauri.

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.33.22)

hariśaṁkarayoryuddham atīvāsīt sudāruṇam cukṣubhuḥ sakalā lokāḥ yatrāstrāṁśupratāpitāḥ

The battle between Hari and Shankara was exceedingly terrible; all the worlds were thrown into turmoil, scorched by the very rays of their weapons.

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.33.23)

pralayo'yam aśeṣasya jagato nūnam āgataḥ menire tridaśā yatra vartamāne mahāhave

'This must surely be the dissolution of the whole world, come at last!' — so the thirty gods thought, as that great battle went on.

Verse 24 (vishnu.5.33.24)

jṛmbhaṇāstreṇa govindo jṛmbhayām āsa śaṁkaram tataḥ praṇeśurdaiteyāḥ pramathāśca samantataḥ

Govinda, with the Weapon of Yawning, overcame Shankar with a drowsy stupor; then the daityas and Shiva's hordes fled away on every side.

Verse 25 (vishnu.5.33.25)

jṛmbhābhibhūtastu haro rathopastha upāviśat na śaśāka tadā yoddhuṁ kṛṣṇenākliṣṭakarmaṇā

Overcome by that spell of drowsiness, Hara sank down onto his chariot-seat; he was no longer able to fight against Krishna, whose deeds are never thwarted.

Verse 26 (vishnu.5.33.26)

garuḍakṣatavāhaśca pradyumnāstranipīḍitaḥ kṛṣṇahuṁkāranirdhūtaśaktiścāpayayau guhaḥ

And Guha, Kartikeya, his mount wounded by Garuda, tormented by Pradyumna's weapons, his power shattered by the mere roar of Krishna, fled from the battlefield.

Verse 27 (vishnu.5.33.27)

jṛmbhite śaṁkare naṣṭe daityasainye guhe jite nīte pramathasainye ca saṁkṣayaṁ śārṅgadhanvanā

With Shankara overcome by drowsiness, the daitya army destroyed, Guha defeated, and the Pramatha army brought to ruin by the wielder of the Sharnga bow —

Verse 28 (vishnu.5.33.28)

nandīśasaṁgṛhītāśvam adhirūḍho mahāratham bāṇastatrāyayau yoddhuṁ kṛṣṇakārṣṇibalaiḥ saha

— Bana, mounted on a great chariot whose horses Nandin had gathered for him, came forth there to fight against the forces of Krishna, Pradyumna, and Bala.

Verse 29 (vishnu.5.33.29)

balabhadro mahāvīryo bāṇasainyam anekadhā vivyādha bāṇaiḥ prabhraśya dharmataścāpalāyata

The mighty Balabhadra pierced Bana's army with his arrows in many places; routed, it fled the field in disarray.

Verse 30 (vishnu.5.33.30)

ākṛṣya lāṅgalāgreṇa musalenāvapothitam balaṁ balena dadṛśe bāṇo bāṇaiśca cakriṇā

Bana saw his own army being dragged in by the point of Bala's plow and crushed beneath his pestle-mace, and struck as well by the discus-bearer's arrows.

Verse 31 (vishnu.5.33.31)

tataḥ kṛṣṇasya bāṇena yuddham āsīt samantataḥ

Then a battle broke out on every side between Krishna and Bana.

Verse 32 (vishnu.5.33.32)

parasparam iṣūn dīptān kāyatrāṇavibhedakān kṛṣṇaściccheda bāṇaistān bāṇena prahitān śarān bibheda keśavaṁ bāṇo bāṇaṁ vivyādha cakrabhṛt

Each rained blazing, armor-piercing arrows upon the other; Krishna cut down with his own shafts those arrows Bana had loosed; Bana pierced Keshava, and the discus-bearer pierced Bana in turn.

Verse 33 (vishnu.5.33.33)

mumucāte tathāstrāṇi bāṇakṛṣṇau jigīṣayā parasparaṁ kṣatiparau paramāmarṣiṇau dvija

Both intent on victory, O twice-born, both bent on wounding each other, both filled with utmost fury, Bana and Krishna loosed their weapons at one another.

Verse 34 (vishnu.5.33.34)

chidyamāneṣv aśeṣeṣu śareṣv astre ca sīdati prācuryeṇa harirbāṇaṁ hantuṁ cakre tato manaḥ

When all their arrows had been cut down and Bana's weapons began to fail from sheer exhaustion, Hari then resolved in his mind to slay him.

Verse 35 (vishnu.5.33.35)

tato'rkaśatasaṁghātatejasaḥ sadṛśadyutiḥ jagrāha daityacakrārirhariścakraṁ sudarśanam

Then Hari, foe of the daitya hosts, radiant as the combined light of a hundred suns, took up his discus Sudarshana.

Verse 36 (vishnu.5.33.36)

muñcato bāṇanāśāya taccakraṁ madhuvidviṣaḥ nagnā daiteyavidyābhūt koṭavī purato hareḥ

As the foe of Madhu released that discus for Bana's destruction, the naked sorcery-demoness Kotavi appeared before Hari.

Verse 37 (vishnu.5.33.37)

tām agrato harirdṛṣṭvā mīlitākṣaḥ sudarśanam mumoca bāṇam uddiśya chettuṁ bāhuvanaṁ ripoḥ

Seeing her before him, Hari closed his eyes and loosed Sudarshana, aimed at Bana, to cut down the very forest of his enemy's arms.

Verse 38 (vishnu.5.33.38)

krameṇa tat tu bāhūnāṁ bāṇasyācyutacoditam chedaṁ cakre'surāpāstaśastraughakṣapaṇādṛtam

Driven on by Achyuta, that discus cut down Bana's arms one after another, in the course also destroying the mass of weapons the asura had hurled.

Verse 39 (vishnu.5.33.39)

chinne bāhuvane tat tu karasthaṁ madhusūdanaḥ mumukṣurbāṇanāśāya vijñātastripuradviṣā

When that forest of arms had been shorn away, Madhusudana, discus once more in hand and bent now on Bana's final destruction, was recognized in this intent by the foe of Tripura.

Verse 40 (vishnu.5.33.40)

sa upetyāha govindaṁ sāmapūrvam umāpatiḥ vilokya bāṇaṁ dordaṇḍacchedāsṛksrāvavarṣiṇam

Seeing Bana raining blood from the stumps of his severed arms, Uma's husband approached Govinda and spoke to him first with words of conciliation:

Verse 41 (vishnu.5.33.41)

śaṁkara uvāca kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa jagannātha jāne tvāṁ puruṣottamam pareśaṁ paramātmānam anādinidhanaṁ param

Shankara said: 'Krishna, Krishna, Lord of the world! I know you to be Purushottama, the Supreme Lord, the Supreme Self, without beginning or end, the Highest of all.'

Verse 42 (vishnu.5.33.42)

devatiryaṅmanuṣyeṣu śarīragrahaṇātmikā līleyaṁ sarvabhūtasya tava ceṣṭopalakṣaṇā

'This assuming of bodily forms among gods, animals, and men is your play — merely the outward mark of your activity as the very self within all beings.'

Verse 43 (vishnu.5.33.43)

tat prasīdābhayaṁ dattaṁ bāṇasyāsya mayā prabho tat tvayā nānṛtaṁ kāryaṁ yan mayā vyāhṛtaṁ vacaḥ

'Therefore be gracious, O Lord: I have granted this Bana fearlessness; let not that word of mine be rendered false by you.'

Verse 44 (vishnu.5.33.44)

asmatsaṁśrayavṛddho'yaṁ nāparādhyastavāvyaya mayā dattavaro daityastatastvāṁ kṣamayāmy aham

'Raised up under our protection, this daitya has done you no wrong, O imperishable one; I have granted him a boon — and so I entreat your forgiveness on his behalf.'

Verse 45 (vishnu.5.33.45)

parāśara uvāca ity uktaḥ prāha govindaḥ śūlapāṇim umāpatim prasannavadano bhūtvā gatāmarṣo'suraṁ prati

Parashara said: Thus addressed, Govinda, his face now gracious and his anger toward the asura spent, said to the trident-bearing husband of Uma:

Verse 46 (vishnu.5.33.46)

bhagavān uvāca yuṣmaddattavaro bāṇo jīvatām eṣa śaṁkara tvadvākyagauravād etan mayā cakraṁ nivartitam

The Blessed Lord said: 'Let this Bana, to whom you granted a boon, live on, Shankara; out of regard for your word, I have withdrawn my discus.'

Verse 47 (vishnu.5.33.47)

tvayā yad abhayaṁ dattaṁ tad dattam akhilaṁ mayā matto'vibhinnam ātmānaṁ draṣṭum arhasi śaṁkara

'Whatever fearlessness you have granted has been granted wholly by me as well; you should see yourself, Shankara, as not different from me.'

Verse 48 (vishnu.5.33.48)

yo'haṁ sa tvaṁ jagaccedaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam avidyāmohitātmānaḥ puruṣā bhinnadarśinaḥ

'Who I am, you are; and so too is this entire world, with its gods, its asuras, and its men. It is only those whose minds are deluded by ignorance who see us as separate.'

Verse 49 (vishnu.5.33.49)

parāśara uvāca ity uktvā prayayau kṛṣṇaḥ prādyumniryatra tiṣṭhati tadbandhaphaṇino neśurgaruḍānilaśoṣitāḥ

Parashara said: Having said this, Krishna went to where Pradyumna's son was held; the serpents that had bound him withered away and vanished in the wind of Garuda's wings.

Verse 50 (vishnu.5.33.50)

tato'niruddham āropya sapatnīkaṁ garutmati ājagmurdvārakāṁ rāmakārṣṇidāmodarāḥ purīm

Then, setting Aniruddha, together with his wife, upon Garuda, Rama, Karshni, and Damodara returned to the city of Dvaraka.
