Vibhishana's Coronation
Shloka 1 (yuddha.112.1)
ते रावणवधं दृष्ट्वा देवगन्धर्वदानवाः । जग्मुः स्वैः स्वैर्विमानैस्ते कथयन्तः शुभाः कथाः ॥ 112.1 ॥
te rāvaṇavadhaṃ dṛṣṭvā devagandharvadānavāḥ | jagmuḥ svaiḥ svairvimānaiste kathayantaḥ śubhāḥ kathāḥ || 112.1 ||
Having witnessed Ravana's destruction, the gods, gandharvas, and danavas went away, each in his own aerial chariot, recounting the auspicious tale to one another.
Shloka 2 (yuddha.112.2)
रावणस्य वधं घोरं राघवस्य पराक्रमम् । सुयुद्धं वानराणां च सुग्रीवस्य च मन्त्रितम् ॥ 112.2 ॥
rāvaṇasya vadhaṃ ghoraṃ rāghavasya parākramam | suyuddhaṃ vānarāṇāṃ ca sugrīvasya ca mantritam || 112.2 ||
They spoke of Ravana's terrible death, Raghava's valor, the splendid battle fought by the vanaras, and the counsel given by Sugriva,
Shloka 3 (yuddha.112.3)
अनुरागं च वीर्यं च सौमित्रे र्लक्ष्मणस्य च । पतिव्रतात्वं सीताया हनूमति पराक्रमम् । कथयन्तो महाभागा जग्मुर्हृष्टा यथागतम् ॥ 112.3 ॥
anurāgaṃ ca vīryaṃ ca saumitre rlakṣmaṇasya ca | pativratātvaṃ sītāyā hanūmati parākramam | kathayanto mahābhāgā jagmurhṛṣṭā yathāgatam || 112.3 ||
and of the affection and valor of Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, of Sita's devotion to her husband, and of Hanuman's might — thus conversing among themselves, those illustrious beings returned, greatly delighted, the way they had come.
Shloka 4 (yuddha.112.4)
राघवस्तु रथं दिव्यमिन्द्रदत्तं शिखिप्रभम् । अनुज्ञाप्य महाबाहुर्मातलिं प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥ 112.4 ॥
rāghavastu rathaṃ divyamindradattaṃ śikhiprabham | anujñāpya mahābāhurmātaliṃ pratyapūjayat || 112.4 ||
Then mighty-armed Raghava, taking leave of the divine chariot given by Indra, which shone like fire, respectfully honored Matali.
Shloka 5 (yuddha.112.5)
राघवेणाभ्यनुज्ञातो मातलिः शक्रसारथिः । दिव्यं तं रथमास्थाय दिवमेवोत्पपात ह ॥ 112.5 ॥
rāghaveṇābhyanujñāto mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ | divyaṃ taṃ rathamāsthāya divamevotpapāta ha || 112.5 ||
Given leave by Raghava, Matali, Indra's charioteer, mounted that divine chariot and rose straight up into heaven.
Shloka 6 (yuddha.112.6)
तस्मिंस्तु दिवमारूढे सरथे रथिनां वरः । राघवः परमप्रीतः सुग्रीवं परिषस्वजे ॥ 112.6 ॥
tasmiṃstu divamārūḍhe sarathe rathināṃ varaḥ | rāghavaḥ paramaprītaḥ sugrīvaṃ pariṣasvaje || 112.6 ||
When Matali had ascended to heaven with his chariot, Raghava, foremost among charioteers, filled with great joy, embraced Sugriva.
Shloka 7 (yuddha.112.7)
परिष्वज्य च सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणेनाभिवादितः । पूज्यमानो हरिगणैराजगाम बलालयम् ॥ 112.7 ॥
pariṣvajya ca sugrīvaṃ lakṣmaṇenābhivāditaḥ | pūjyamāno harigaṇairājagāma balālayam || 112.7 ||
Having embraced Sugriva, greeted by Lakshmana, and honored by the ranks of vanaras, he came to the army's encampment.
Shloka 8 (yuddha.112.8)
अथोवाच स काकुत्स्थः समीपपरिवर्तिनम् । सौमित्रिं सत्त्वसम्पन्नं लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम् ॥ 112.8 ॥
athovāca sa kākutsthaḥ samīpaparivartinam | saumitriṃ sattvasampannaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ śubhalakṣaṇam || 112.8 ||
Then Kakutstha spoke to Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, who stood nearby, endowed with strength and marked by every auspicious sign.
Shloka 9 (yuddha.112.9)
विभीषणमिमं सौम्य लङ्कायामभिषेचय । अनुरक्तं च भक्तं च तथा पूर्वोपकारिणम् ॥ 112.9 ॥
vibhīṣaṇamimaṃ saumya laṅkāyāmabhiṣecaya | anuraktaṃ ca bhaktaṃ ca tathā pūrvopakāriṇam || 112.9 ||
"Gentle one, consecrate this Vibhishana as king in Lanka — one devoted and loyal to us, who has already rendered us great service."
Shloka 10 (yuddha.112.10)
एष मे परमः कामो यदिमं रावणानुजम् । लङ्कायां सौम्य पश्येयमभिषिक्तं विभीषणम् ॥ 112.10 ॥
eṣa me paramaḥ kāmo yadimaṃ rāvaṇānujam | laṅkāyāṃ saumya paśyeyamabhiṣiktaṃ vibhīṣaṇam || 112.10 ||
"This is my dearest wish, gentle one — that I should see this Vibhishana, Ravana's brother, consecrated in Lanka."
Shloka 11 (yuddha.112.11)
एवमुक्तस्तु सौमित्री राघवेण महात्मना । तथेत्युक्त्वा सुसंहृष्टः सौवर्णं घटमाददे ॥ 112.11 ॥
evamuktastu saumitrī rāghaveṇa mahātmanā | tathetyuktvā susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ sauvarṇaṃ ghaṭamādade || 112.11 ||
Thus addressed by the great-souled Raghava, Lakshmana said, "So be it," and joyfully took up a golden pitcher.
Shloka 12 (yuddha.112.12)
तं घटं वानरेन्द्राणां हस्ते दत्त्वा मनोजवान् । व्यादिदेश महासत्त्वान् समुद्रसलिलं तदा ॥ 112.12 ॥
taṃ ghaṭaṃ vānarendrāṇāṃ haste dattvā manojavān | vyādideśa mahāsattvān samudrasalilaṃ tadā || 112.12 ||
Placing that pitcher in the hands of the vanara chiefs, that mighty one then commanded those thought-swift, powerful vanaras to bring seawater.
Shloka 13 (yuddha.112.13)
अतिशीघ्रं ततो गत्वा वानरास्ते मनोजवाः । आगतास्तु जलं गृह्य समुद्राद् वानरोत्तमाः ॥ 112.13 ॥
atiśīghraṃ tato gatvā vānarāste manojavāḥ | āgatāstu jalaṃ gṛhya samudrād vānarottamāḥ || 112.13 ||
Then those thought-swift, foremost vanaras went most swiftly and returned, having brought water from the sea.
Shloka 14 (yuddha.112.14)
ततस्त्वेकं घटं गृह्य संस्थाप्य परमासने ॥ 112.14 ॥
tatastvekaṃ ghaṭaṃ gṛhya saṃsthāpya paramāsane || 112.14 ||
Then, taking one pitcher and seating Vibhishana upon the royal throne,
Shloka 15 (yuddha.112.15)
घटेन तेन सौमित्रिरभ्यषिञ्चद् विभीषणम् । लङ्कायां रक्षसां मध्ये राजानं रामशासनात् । विधिना मन्त्रदृष्टेन सुहृद्गणसमावृतम् ॥ 112.15 ॥
ghaṭena tena saumitrirabhyaṣiñcad vibhīṣaṇam | laṅkāyāṃ rakṣasāṃ madhye rājānaṃ rāmaśāsanāt | vidhinā mantradṛṣṭena suhṛdgaṇasamāvṛtam || 112.15 ||
Lakshmana, surrounded by his circle of friends, sprinkled Vibhishana with water from that pitcher there amid the rakshasas, in accordance with the mantra-prescribed rite, making him king of Lanka at Rama's command.
Shloka 16 (yuddha.112.16)
अभ्यषिञ्चस्तदा सर्वे राक्षसा वानरास्तथा । प्रहर्षमतुलं गत्वा तुष्टुवू राममेव ह ॥ 112.16 ॥
abhyaṣiñcastadā sarve rākṣasā vānarāstathā | praharṣamatulaṃ gatvā tuṣṭuvū rāmameva ha || 112.16 ||
Then all the rakshasas and the vanaras alike consecrated him, and filled with boundless joy, they extolled Rama himself.
Shloka 17 (yuddha.112.17)
तस्यामात्या जहृषिरे भक्ता ये चास्य राक्षसाः । दृष्ट्वाभिषिक्तं लङ्कायां राक्षसेन्द्रं विभीषणम् ॥ 112.17 ॥
tasyāmātyā jahṛṣire bhaktā ye cāsya rākṣasāḥ | dṛṣṭvābhiṣiktaṃ laṅkāyāṃ rākṣasendraṃ vibhīṣaṇam || 112.17 ||
His counsellors, and those rakshasas devoted to him, rejoiced to see Vibhishana, lord of the rakshasas, consecrated on the throne of Lanka.
Shloka 18 (yuddha.112.18)
राघवः परमां प्रीतिं जगाम सहलक्ष्मणः । स तद् राज्यं महत् प्राप्य रामदत्तं विभीषणः ॥ 112.18 ॥
rāghavaḥ paramāṃ prītiṃ jagāma sahalakṣmaṇaḥ | sa tad rājyaṃ mahat prāpya rāmadattaṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ || 112.18 ||
Raghava, together with Lakshmana, was filled with the greatest delight; and Vibhishana too, having obtained that great kingdom bestowed on him by Rama, was equally overjoyed.
Shloka 19 (yuddha.112.19)
प्रकृतीः सान्त्ययित्वा च ततो राममुपागमत् ॥ 112.19 ॥
prakṛtīḥ sāntyayitvā ca tato rāmamupāgamat || 112.19 ||
After consoling his people, Vibhishana then came into Rama's presence.
Shloka 20 (yuddha.112.20)
दध्यक्षतान् मोदकांश्च लाजाः सुमनसस्तथा । आजह्रुरथ संहृष्टाः पौरास्तस्मै निशाचराः ॥ 112.20 ॥
dadhyakṣatān modakāṃśca lājāḥ sumanasastathā | ājahruratha saṃhṛṣṭāḥ paurāstasmai niśācarāḥ || 112.20 ||
And the rakshasas dwelling in the city, greatly delighted, brought to him curds, unbroken rice-grains, sweets, parched grain, and flowers as offerings.
Shloka 21 (yuddha.112.21)
स तान् गृहीत्वा दुर्धर्षो राघवाय न्यवेदयत् । मङ्गल्यं मङ्गलं सर्वं लक्ष्मणाय च वीर्यवान् ॥ 112.21 ॥
sa tān gṛhītvā durdharṣo rāghavāya nyavedayat | maṅgalyaṃ maṅgalaṃ sarvaṃ lakṣmaṇāya ca vīryavān || 112.21 ||
Accepting them, the unconquerable, valiant Vibhishana joyfully offered all those auspicious things to Rama and to Lakshmana.
Shloka 22 (yuddha.112.22)
कृतकार्यं समृद्धार्थं दृष्ट्वा रामो विभीषणम् । प्रतिजग्राह तत् सर्वं तस्यैव प्रतिकाम्यया ॥ 112.22 ॥
kṛtakāryaṃ samṛddhārthaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmo vibhīṣaṇam | pratijagrāha tat sarvaṃ tasyaiva pratikāmyayā || 112.22 ||
Seeing Vibhishana, his purpose accomplished and his fortune restored, Rama accepted all those offerings, solely to gratify him.
Shloka 23 (yuddha.112.23)
ततह् शैलोपमं वीरं प्राञ्जलिं प्रणतं स्थितम् । उवाचेदं वचो रामो हनूमन्तं प्लवङ्गमम् ॥ 112.23 ॥
tatah śailopamaṃ vīraṃ prāñjaliṃ praṇataṃ sthitam | uvācedaṃ vaco rāmo hanūmantaṃ plavaṅgamam || 112.23 ||
Then Rama spoke these words to the valiant vanara Hanuman, who stood mountain-like before him, humbly bowed with palms joined in reverence.
Shloka 24 (yuddha.112.24)
अनुज्ञाप्य महाराजमिमं सौम्य विभीषणम् । प्रविश्य नगरीं लङ्कां कौशलं ब्रूहि मैथिलीम् ॥ 112.24 ॥
anujñāpya mahārājamimaṃ saumya vibhīṣaṇam | praviśya nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ kauśalaṃ brūhi maithilīm || 112.24 ||
"Gentle one, take leave of this great king Vibhishana, enter the city of Lanka, and tell Maithili of our well-being."
Shloka 25 (yuddha.112.25)
वैदेह्यै मां कुशलिनं सुग्रीवं च सलक्ष्मणम् । आचक्ष्व वदतां श्रेष्ठ रावणं च हतं रणे ॥ 112.25 ॥
vaidehyai māṃ kuśalinaṃ sugrīvaṃ ca salakṣmaṇam | ācakṣva vadatāṃ śreṣṭha rāvaṇaṃ ca hataṃ raṇe || 112.25 ||
"Tell Vaidehi, best of speakers, that I am well, together with Lakshmana and Sugriva, and that Ravana has been slain in battle."
Shloka 26 (yuddha.112.26)
प्रियमेतदुदाहृत्य वैदेह्यास्त्वं हरीश्वर । प्रतिगृह्य च संदेशमुपावर्तितुमर्हसि ॥ 112.26 ॥
priyametadudāhṛtya vaidehyāstvaṃ harīśvara | pratigṛhya ca saṃdeśamupāvartitumarhasi || 112.26 ||
"Having delivered this welcome news to Vaidehi, lord of the vanaras, you should return, bearing back her message."
