ॐ कल्याणसुन्दराय नमः
Oṃ Kalyāṇasundarāya Namaḥ
Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
'Kalyāṇa' (Auspicious/Goodness/Wedding) + 'Sundara' (Beautiful). He is the one whose beauty brings auspiciousness to all.
Meaning
The Beautiful Bridegroom. This is Shiva at his most radiant, at the moment of his wedding to Parvati. Kalyanasundara represents the peak of aesthetic and spiritual harmony. He is the guardian of the 'Sacred Vow.' To worship him is to celebrate the beauty of commitment and the joy of two becoming one. He teaches that true beauty is not just physical, but the 'Kalyana' (goodness) that radiates from a soul that has found its counterpart. He is the patron of every wedding where two worlds merge.
Story · From tradition
The wedding of Shiva and Parvati at Triyuginarayan is the archetypal marriage. Shiva, the wild ascetic, transformed into a kingly groom to honor Parvati's love. Vishnu acted as the brother who gave her away, and Brahma was the priest. This 'Kalyanasundara' form was so brilliant that the entire universe stopped to watch. It showed that even the most 'wild' and 'untameable' spirit finds its beauty and purpose in the commitment to another. This union restored balance to the cosmos and ensured the birth of Skanda to save the world. Source: Shiva Purana and Matsya Purana.
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
Kalyanasundara is the patron of the 'Modern Indian Wedding'—especially the NRI wedding that tries to bridge the heritage of India with a life in the West. He represents the 'Moment of Arrival'—when you stand at the altar or the mandap and realize that your journey of searching is over. He is the beauty found in choosing a partner who sees your 'ash and snakes' and still thinks you are the most beautiful person in the world. He teaches that marriage is the start of a shared cosmic dance.
