सोमनाथ
Somanātha
The lord of the moon who heals the mind and bestows emotional grace.
ॐ सोमनाथाय नमः
Oṃ Somanāthāya Namaḥ
Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
'Soma' (the moon/nectar) + 'Nātha' (Lord). He is the master of the moon and the cool, healing energy of love.
Meaning
Lord of the Moon. This name represents the cooling, gentle side of the Beloved. After the heat of tapas and the fire of transformation, Somanatha is the moonlight on a sleeping face. He is the guardian of our emotional tides and mental peace. To worship Somanatha is to find the 'nectar' (Soma) in a relationship—the sweetness that heals old wounds and calms the restless mind. He teaches that true love is not a scorching sun, but a soft light that allows everything to rest and grow.
Story · From tradition
Chandra (the Moon) was cursed by Daksha to wither away and die. He prayed to Shiva at the shores of Prabhasa. Shiva, moved by his devotion, could not entirely remove the curse, but he gathered the dying Moon and placed him on his own head. This ensured that even as the Moon wanes, he will always wax again, becoming eternal. This act of saving the Moon is the origin of the first Jyotirlinga—Somnath. It shows that the Beloved protects even the dwindling light within us. Source: Shiva Purana and Mahabharata.
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
Somanatha is the patron of mental health and emotional resilience in relationships. For the NRI professional living in a high-pressure city like New York or Singapore, the mind often feels like the 'dying moon'—exhausted and diminishing. Somanatha is the quiet evening walk with a partner, the shared silence that doesn't need words, and the emotional safety of knowing you are accepted even in your 'waning' phases. He represents the love that heals anxiety and restores your inner light.
Meditation · ध्यान
Visualize a cool, silver crescent moon at the center of your forehead. Imagine its light flowing down like liquid nectar, cooling your eyes, your brain, and your heart. Feel every burn of anger or worry being washed away by this divine moonlight. Repeat: 'I am calm. I am loved. I am whole.'
Mantra Practice · मंत्र जप
Chant 108 times at night, preferably while looking at the moon. Use a pearl or white crystal mala. Let each repetition feel like a cooling drop of water on a dry leaf.
Journal Prompt · चिंतन
“In what area of your life or relationship do you need more 'coolness' and less 'heat' right now? How can you bring the spirit of the moonlight into that space?”
A silver crown upon his head / Where every tear of light is shed.
