Bilvashtakam

tridalaṃ triguṇākāraṃ trinetraṃ ca trayāyudham। trijenmasāpasaṃhāraṃ ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।1।।

तीन पत्तियों वाला बिल्व पत्र त्रिगुण, त्रिनेत्र और त्रिशूल का प्रतीक है। एक भी बिल्व पत्र शिव को अर्पित करने से तीन जन्मों के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। यह एकमात्र अर्पण भगवान शिव को अत्यंत प्रिय है।

The three-leafed bilva represents the three guṇas of nature, the three eyes of Shiva, and His trident weapon. Offering even a single such leaf destroys the accumulated sins of three lifetimes. This one act of devotion with a bilva leaf is the highest offering to Lord Shiva.

triśākhaiḥ bilvapatraiśca acchidhraiḥ komalaiḥ śubhaiḥ। śivapūjāṃ kariṣyāmi ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।2।।

तीन शाखाओं वाले, बिना छेद के, कोमल और शुभ बिल्व पत्रों से मैं शिव की पूजा करूँगा। ऐसे निर्दोष पत्र भक्त के शुद्ध हृदय का प्रतीक हैं। इस प्रकार का एक भी बिल्व पत्र शिव को अर्पित करना सर्वोत्तम पूजा है।

With three-branched bilva leaves that are unblemished, tender, and auspicious, I shall perform the worship of Lord Shiva. Such perfect leaves, whole and untorn, represent the purity of heart one brings to devotion. Even a single such offering made with sincerity becomes the supreme act of Shiva's worship.

koṭikanyāpradānasya samprāptasya phalaṃ labhet। kāśīkṣetre nivāsasya ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।3।।

करोड़ों कन्यादान करने का फल और काशी क्षेत्र में निवास करने का पुण्य — ये सब एक बिल्व पत्र शिव को अर्पित करने से प्राप्त होते हैं। बिल्व की पवित्रता सभी दान और तीर्थयात्राओं से बढ़कर है। इतना सरल कार्य करने से इतना महान फल मिलता है।

The merit equivalent to donating ten million maidens in charity, and the merit of residing in the holy city of Kashi — all of this is obtained by offering a single bilva leaf to Lord Shiva. The sacred power of the bilva thus surpasses even the most exalted acts of worldly charity and pilgrimage. No pilgrimage or donation can match this simplest of devotional acts.

dantīkoṭisahasreṣu aśvamedhaśateṣu ca। koṭikanyāpradānena ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।4।।

हजारों करोड़ हाथियों के दान का, सैकड़ों अश्वमेध यज्ञों का और करोड़ों कन्यादान का पुण्य — ये सब एक बिल्व पत्र शिव को अर्पित करने के बराबर हैं। सबसे शक्तिशाली वैदिक अनुष्ठान भी इस साधारण पत्ते के सामने फीके पड़ जाते हैं। भक्ति से अर्पित एक बिल्व की महिमा अतुलनीय है।

The merit of gifting thousands of crores of elephants, performing hundreds of Ashvamedha horse sacrifices, and donating crores of maidens in charity — all this is equaled by offering a single bilva leaf to Lord Shiva. The most powerful Vedic rituals and the most lavish royal donations pale before this humble leaf. Such is the incomparable glory of the bilva offered with devotion.

lakṣmyāstanutasaṃbhūtaṃ mahādevasya ca priyam। bilvavṛkṣaṃ prayacchāmi ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।5।।

बिल्व वृक्ष स्वयं देवी लक्ष्मी के शरीर से उत्पन्न हुआ है और महादेव शिव को अत्यंत प्रिय है। इस पवित्र वृक्ष के पत्ते अर्पित करने से लक्ष्मी और शिव दोनों की दिव्य शक्तियाँ एक साथ आह्वान होती हैं। मैं यह बिल्व पत्र, जो दिव्य कृपा से जन्मा है, शिव को अर्पित करता हूँ।

The bilva tree is said to have originated from the body of Goddess Lakshmi herself, and it is most beloved of Lord Mahadeva Shiva. By offering this sacred tree's leaf, one connects the divine energies of both Lakshmi and Shiva in a single act of worship. I offer this bilva leaf, born of divine grace and dear to the Supreme Lord.

darśanaṃ bilvavṛkṣasya sparśanaṃ pāpanāśanam। aghorapāpasaṃhāraṃ ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।6।।

बिल्व वृक्ष को केवल देखना पवित्र करता है और उसे छूना पाप नष्ट करता है। सबसे भयंकर पाप भी शिव को एक बिल्व पत्र अर्पित करने से नष्ट हो जाते हैं। शिव की असीम करुणा है कि वे इस सरल भेंट को स्वीकार कर सबसे बड़ी मुक्ति प्रदान करते हैं।

The mere sight of the bilva tree is purifying, and its touch destroys sin completely. Even the gravest and most terrible sins are annihilated by offering a single bilva leaf to Lord Shiva. Such is the infinite compassion of Shiva that He accepts this simplest gift and grants the greatest liberation in return.

kāśīkṣetraniavāsaśca kālabhairavadaṛśanam। prayāgamādhavaṃ dṛṣṭvā ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।7।।

काशी क्षेत्र में रहने का पुण्य, काल भैरव के दर्शन का फल और प्रयाग में माधव के दर्शन की कृपा — ये सारा आध्यात्मिक वैभव एक बिल्व पत्र शिव को अर्पित करने में समाया हुआ है। समस्त भारत की पवित्र भूमि का सार इस एक पत्ते में है। जहाँ भी हों, यह अर्पण हमें सभी तीर्थों से एक साथ जोड़ देता है।

The merit of residing in the holy city of Kashi, beholding the fierce and liberating form of Kala Bhairava, and having the blessed vision of Lord Madhava at Prayaga — all this spiritual wealth is contained in the offering of a single bilva leaf to Shiva. The sacred geography of the entire subcontinent is compressed into this one humble leaf. Wherever one stands, this offering connects them to every holy site simultaneously.

mūlato brahmarūpāya madhyato viṣṇurūpiṇe। agrataḥ śivarūpāya ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam।।8।।

बिल्व पत्र की जड़ में ब्रह्मा, मध्य में विष्णु और अग्र भाग में शिव विराजमान हैं। इस प्रकार एक तीन पत्तियों वाले बिल्व पत्र में सम्पूर्ण त्रिमूर्ति समाई हुई है। शिव को एक बिल्व पत्र अर्पित करने से तीनों देवों की एक साथ पूजा होती है और सृष्टि, पालन और मोक्ष का चक्र पूर्ण होता है।

The root of the bilva leaf embodies Lord Brahma the Creator, its middle portion embodies Lord Vishnu the Sustainer, and its tip embodies Lord Shiva the Destroyer. Thus, a single three-petalled bilva leaf contains within it the entire Trimurti — the complete divine trinity that governs the cosmos. By offering one bilva leaf to Shiva, one simultaneously worships all three cosmic powers, completing the cycle of creation, preservation, and liberation.
