Damodarashtakam

namāmīśvaraṃ saccidānandarūpaṃ lasatkuṇḍalaṃ gokulебhrājamānam | yaśodābhiyolūkhalāddhāvamānaṃ parāmṛṣṭamatyantato drutya gopyā ||1||

मैं उस परमेश्वर को प्रणाम करता हूँ जिनका स्वरूप सत्-चित्-आनन्द है और जिनके चमकते कुण्डल गोकुल को प्रकाशमान करते हैं। जो माता यशोदा के भय से ओखली से भागे, किन्तु अन्त में उस गोपी ने उन्हें पकड़ ही लिया। वही सर्वव्यापी परमात्मा माँ के प्रेम के वश में हो गए।

I bow down to the Supreme Lord, whose nature is eternal existence, pure consciousness, and infinite bliss, whose gleaming earrings illuminate the entire realm of Gokula. He who ran away in fear from mother Yashoda after being caught stealing butter from the mortar, yet was finally overtaken and seized by her. This same all-pervading God allowed Himself to be caught by the love of a simple cowherd mother.

rudantaṃ muhurnetrayugmaṃ mṛjantaṃ karāmbhojayugmena sātaṅkanetram | muhūḥśvāsakampatrirekāṅkakaṇṭhaṃ bhaje dāmodaraṃ bhaktibaddham ||2||

मैं उन दामोदर की आराधना करता हूँ जो बार-बार रोते हुए अपने दोनों कमल-समान हाथों से आँखें पोंछ रहे थे, और जिनकी आँखें भय से भरी हुई थीं। उनका कोमल कंठ, जो तीन शुभ रेखाओं से सुशोभित है, रुदन और कंपन से थरथरा रहा था। यह वही परमेश्वर हैं जो सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि को धारण करते हैं, किन्तु माँ की डाँट पर रो पड़े।

I worship that Damodara who, while crying repeatedly, wiped His two lotus-like eyes with His tender hands, His eyes wide with childlike fear and worry. His delicate neck, adorned with the three auspicious lines, trembled as He sobbed with each frightened breath. This Supreme Lord who sustains the entire cosmos was moved to tears — not by cosmic events — but by the gentle scolding of His loving mother.

itīdṛksvaleelābhirānandakuṇḍe svaghośaṃ nimajjyantamākhyāpayantam | tadīyeśitavyaṃ ca tatpuṣṭimārge bhaje śrīyaśodājanaṃ dehi dāmnā ||3||

इस प्रकार अपनी दिव्य लीलाओं के द्वारा श्रीकृष्ण ने सम्पूर्ण व्रज को आनन्द के सागर में डुबो दिया और साथ ही अपनी परम सत्ता को भी प्रकट किया। मैं उन भगवान की उपासना करता हूँ जो एक साधारण रस्सी से बँधकर भी पुष्टि मार्ग अर्थात् कृपा के मार्ग को दर्शाते हैं। वे दामरज्जु से बँधे हुए दामोदर समस्त भक्तों पर अपनी कृपा बरसाएँ।

Through such divine playful pastimes, Krishna submerged the entire community of Vraja into an ocean of pure bliss, all while proclaiming — through His actions — His own absolute sovereignty over creation. I worship that Lord who, even while being bound by a simple rope, demonstrated the path of grace and loving surrender. May He, bound by devotion at the waist, bless all seekers who walk the path of selfless love and divine grace.

varaṃ deva mokṣaṃ na mokṣāvadhiṃ vā na cānyaṃ vṛṇe'haṃ vareśādapīha | idaṃ te vapurnātha gopālabālaṃ sadā me manasyāvirāstāṃ kimanyaiḥ ||4||

हे प्रभु! मैं न तो मोक्ष माँगता हूँ, न ही मोक्ष की उच्चतम अवस्था, और न ही किसी अन्य वर-दाता से कोई वरदान चाहता हूँ। हे नाथ! मैं तो केवल यही माँगता हूँ कि आपका गोपाल बालक का यह मनोहर रूप सदा मेरे मन में प्रकट रहे। जब यह रूप मेरे हृदय में बसा हो, तो फिर किसी और वस्तु की क्या आवश्यकता?

O Lord, I do not ask for liberation, nor for the highest realms of mukti, nor do I seek any other boon even from the greatest bestower of blessings. I ask only this, O Master — may Your beautiful form as the cowherd child of Gokula remain ever-present and vivid within my heart and mind. What need do I have of any other wealth, achievement, or spiritual attainment when I have this treasure?

idaṃ te mukhāmbhojam atyantanīlaiḥ parītaṃ kacairbhrājamānaṃ natena | dṛśorbhājanaṃ drāggṛhāṇaṃ lasadbhiḥ kadāhaṃ vidhātre'kṣaṇaṃ te kariṣye ||5||

हे प्रभु! आपका वह कमल-मुख, जो अत्यन्त काली और घुंघराली लटों से घिरा हुआ है और जो स्वाभाविक लालित्य से एक ओर झुका हुआ है — उस रूप का दर्शन मुझे कब प्राप्त होगा? मेरी आँखें उस दिव्य रूप के दर्शन की पात्र कब बनेंगी? यह लालसा ही, हे दामोदर, मेरी सबसे सच्ची प्रार्थना है।

O Lord, Your lotus face, encircled and adorned by those extremely dark, luscious, gently swaying curls of hair, tilted with such natural and irresistible charm — when shall I be blessed with even a single moment of beholding it with my eyes? Let my eyes become the vessel worthy of receiving that most beautiful vision, that divine feast of Your moonlike countenance. This longing itself, O Damodara, is my truest prayer.

namo devadeváya devakīnandanāya sanandādibhirdhyeyapādāmbujāya | ramākrīḍamānapriyāṅgāya tubhyaṃ vrajavratabhītivināśāya nityam ||6||

समस्त देवताओं के देव, देवकी-नन्दन को नमस्कार है, जिनके चरण-कमल सनन्द आदि महान ऋषियों के ध्यान के परम विषय हैं। उन्हें नमन जिनके श्रीअंग में देवी लक्ष्मी स्वयं क्रीड़ा करती हैं, और जो व्रज के समस्त जनों के भय को सदा के लिए नष्ट करते हैं। हे दामोदर, आप एक साथ परम तत्त्व भी हैं और सबसे प्रिय मित्र भी।

Eternal salutations to the God of all gods, to the beloved son of Devaki, whose lotus feet are the supreme object of meditation for great sages like Sananda and other celestial seers. I bow to You whose divine form is the beloved playground of Goddess Lakshmi herself, and who eternally destroys all fear and suffering for the beloved community of Vraja. O Damodara, You are at once the highest transcendent reality and the most intimate, approachable friend.

kuverātmajau baddhamūrtyādhivandyau muktau yena satyapratiñjena pārtha | tathāprematattvaṃ ca śikṣāpadañca pradattaṃ dayālena tasmai namo'stu ||7||

उस परम दयालु प्रभु को नमस्कार, जिन्होंने दामोदर रूप में बँधे हुए भी कुबेर के दोनों पुत्रों — नलकूवर और मणिग्रीव — को शाप-मुक्त किया और एक ऋषि की सत्य प्रतिज्ञा को पूर्ण किया। इस लीला के द्वारा उन्होंने सिखाया कि कर्म, अहंकार या माया का कोई भी बंधन दिव्य प्रेम की मुक्तिदायी कृपा के सामने नहीं टिक सकता। उस प्रेमतत्त्व के परम शिक्षक को अनन्त प्रणाम।

Salutations to that most compassionate Lord who, even while bound in the form of Damodara, liberated the two sons of Kubera — Nalakuvara and Manigriva — who had been cursed and stood as twin Arjuna trees, fulfilling the true and sacred promise of a sage. Through this act He taught the eternal truth that no bondage — whether of karma, pride, or worldly illusion — can withstand the liberating grace of divine love. To that compassionate teacher of love's ultimate truth, let there be infinite reverent salutation.

namaste'stu dāmne sphuraddīptidhāmne tvadīyodarāyātha viśvasya dhāmne | namo rādikāyai tvadīyapriyāyai namo'nantalīlāya devāya tubhyam ||8||

उस पवित्र रस्सी को नमस्कार जिसने आपको बाँधा और जो अपनी दिव्य ज्योति से प्रकाशित है। आपके उस उदर को प्रणाम जो समस्त विश्व का आधार और धाम है। आपकी प्रिया राधिका को नमस्कार, और हे अनन्त लीलाओं के स्वामी देव, आपको नमस्कार। यह दामोदराष्टकम् जो प्रेम से गाया जाए, विशेषतः कार्तिक मास में, भक्त के हृदय को आपके चरण-कमलों से और अधिक बाँधे।

Let there be salutation to the sacred rope that bound You, which blazes with its own brilliant, self-luminous effulgence. Let there be salutation to Your divine waist, which is the very abode and foundation of the entire universe. Salutation to Your beloved Radhika, and salutation to You, O Lord of infinite, ever-fresh, ever-wondrous divine pastimes. May this hymn of Damodara, recited with love during the holy month of Kartik, bind the devotee's heart ever more closely to Your lotus feet.
