भारत की मुनि परम्परा ऋग्वेद के वन ऋषियों से रमण महर्षि, निसर्गदत्त महाराज और हिमालय तथा दक्षिण भारत के जीवित सिद्धों के समकालीन आश्रमों तक फैली है। मुनीश्वर अय्यप्पा को इस सम्पूर्ण चिन्तनशील वंश-परम्परा का सम्राट नाम देता है।
