निर्मल, हर प्रकार की अशुद्धता, दाग या आवरण से मुक्त जो दिव्य प्रकृति की स्वाभाविक दीप्ति को धुँधला करते हैं

शैव सिद्धान्त में तीन मल आत्मा को बाँधते हैं: आणव-मल, कर्म-मल और माया-मल। निर्मल के रूप में अय्यप्पा वह प्रभु हैं जिनमें किसी भी प्रकार का कोई मल नहीं है। ४१ दिनों की दीक्षा परम्परा का व्यवस्थित मल-न्यूनीकरण कार्यक्रम है।
