महिषासुर को मथने वाली - जिन्होंने महिष-दानव का वध किया जिसके अहंकार ने देवताओं को स्वर्ग से खदेड़ दिया था, वह परम दैवीय वीरता जो उनकी पहचान सबसे ऊपर परिभाषित करती है

महिषासुर की गर्दन पर दुर्गा का पाँव और अन्तिम वार के लिए उठा हुआ त्रिशूल, विश्व धार्मिक कला में दैवीय स्त्री-शक्ति की सबसे शक्तिशाली छवियों में से एक है। महाबलीपुरम से मथुरा तक के मन्दिरों की दीवारों पर यह छवि है। हर नवरात्रि इसी छवि पर समाप्त होती है: विजयी देवी। यह विजय इसलिए मनाई जाती है क्योंकि यह आवश्यक है।
