शुम्भ असुर का वध करने वाली - जो उस अहंकार के दानव का नाश करती हैं जो स्वयं देवताओं के प्रतिद्वंद्वी होने का दावा करता था

देवी माहात्म्य में शुम्भ-निशुम्भ प्रकरण इसलिए उल्लेखनीय है क्योंकि ये दानव वास्तव में शक्तिशाली और परिष्कृत हैं। उनकी पराजय परिष्कृत अहंकार की पराजय है। आज के भारत में जो कार्यकारी मानता है कि नियम उस पर लागू नहीं, जो नेता जवाबदेही से परे है - शुम्भघ्नी उन सबको सम्बोधित करती हैं।
