Remedies and Protective Amulets Against Poison, Fever, and Spirits

Verse 1 (garuda.1.189.1)

श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १८९ हरिरुवाच । श्वेतापराजितापुष्परसेनाक्ष्णोश्च पूरणे । पटलं नाशमायाति नात्र कार्या विचारणा

śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam 189 hariruvāca śvetāparājitāpuṣparasenākṣṇośca pūraṇe paṭalaṁ nāśamāyāti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

Hari said: By filling the eyes with the juice of shvetaparajita's flower, patala (a film over the eye) is destroyed — there should be no doubt of this.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.189.2)

मूलं गोक्षुरकस्यैव चर्वित्वा नीललोहित । दन्तकीटव्यथा नश्येत्सुरासुरविमर्दन्

mūlaṁ gokṣurakasyaiva carvitvā nīlalohita dantakīṭavyathā naśyetsurāsuravimardan

Chewing the root of gokshura, O blue-red one, destroys the pain of dental worms, O crusher of gods and demons!

Verse 3 (garuda.1.189.3)

नारी पुष्पादिने पीत्वा गोक्षीरेणोपवासतः । श्वेतार्कस्य तु वै मूलं तस्यास्तद्गुल्मशूलनुत्

nārī puṣpādine pītvā gokṣīreṇopavāsataḥ śvetārkasya tu vai mūlaṁ tasyāstadgulmaśūlanut

A woman who drinks the root of white arka with cow's milk while fasting on the day of the Pushya asterism — her abdominal tumour and colic pain are destroyed.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.189.4)

श्वेतार्कपुष्पं विधिना गृहीतं पूर्वमन्त्रितम् । ऋतुशुद्धा च ललना कटौ बद्ध्वा प्रसूयते

śvetārkapuṣpaṁ vidhinā gṛhītaṁ pūrvamantritam ṛtuśuddhā ca lalanā kaṭau baddhvā prasūyate

The flower of white arka, taken ritually and first consecrated with a mantra — a woman purified by her menstrual period, binding it at the waist, conceives.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.189.5)

हस्तबद्धं पलाशस्य अपामार्गस्य वा हर । मूलं सर्वज्वरहरं भूतप्रेतादिनुद्भवेत्

hastabaddhaṁ palāśasya apāmārgasya vā hara mūlaṁ sarvajvaraharaṁ bhūtapretādinudbhavet

Bound on the hand, O Hara, the root of palasha or of apamarga destroys every fever, and removes affliction by bhutas, pretas, and the like.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.189.6)

पीतं वृश्चिकमूलञ्च प्रातः पर्युषिताम्बुना । सार्धं विनाशयेद्दाहज्वरञ्च परमेश्वर

pītaṁ vṛścikamūlañca prātaḥ paryuṣitāmbunā sārdhaṁ vināśayeddāhajvarañca parameśvara

The root of vrishchika, drunk at dawn together with water kept standing overnight, destroys burning and fever, O Parameshvara.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.189.7)

शिखायाञ्चैव तद्बद्धं भवेदैकाहिकाहिनुत् । पीतं पर्युषिताद्भिश्च भवेत्सर्वविषापहृत्

śikhāyāñcaiva tadbaddhaṁ bhavedaikāhikāhinut pītaṁ paryuṣitādbhiśca bhavetsarvaviṣāpahṛt

Bound in the hair-lock, it removes daily (ekahika) fever. Drunk with water kept standing overnight, it removes every kind of poison.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.189.8)

यस्य लज्जालुकामूलं दीयते च स्वरेतसा । सार्धं स वैरं संयाति पुमान्स्त्री वा न संशयः

yasya lajjālukāmūlaṁ dīyate ca svaretasā sārdhaṁ sa vairaṁ saṁyāti pumānstrī vā na saṁśayaḥ

To whomever the root of lajjaluka is given together with one's own semen, that man or woman comes into enmity with him — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.189.9)

पिष्ट्वा गव्यघृतेनैव पाठामूलं पिबेत्तु यः । सर्वं विषं विनश्येच्च नात्र कार्या विचारणा

piṣṭvā gavyaghṛtenaiva pāṭhāmūlaṁ pibettu yaḥ sarvaṁ viṣaṁ vinaśyecca nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

One who drinks the root of patha ground with cow's ghee — all poison is destroyed in him; there should be no doubt of this.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.189.10)

मूलं पर्युषितोदेन शिरीषस्य यथा तथा । रक्तचित्रकमूलस्य रसस्य भरणाद्धर । कर्णयोः कामलाव्याधिनाशः स्यान्नात्र संशयः

mūlaṁ paryuṣitodena śirīṣasya yathā tathā raktacitrakamūlasya rasasya bharaṇāddhara karṇayoḥ kāmalāvyādhināśaḥ syānnātra saṁśayaḥ

The root of shirisha likewise with water kept standing overnight; and by filling the ears with the juice of red chitraka's root, O Hara, the disease kamala (jaundice) is destroyed — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.189.11)

श्वेतकोकिलाक्षमूलं छागीक्षीरेण संयुतम् । त्रिसप्ताहेन वै पीतं क्षयरोगं क्षयं नयेत्

śvetakokilākṣamūlaṁ chāgīkṣīreṇa saṁyutam trisaptāhena vai pītaṁ kṣayarogaṁ kṣayaṁ nayet

The root of shvetakokilaksha, combined with goat's milk and drunk for twenty-one days, destroys the wasting disease (kshaya roga).

Verse 12 (garuda.1.189.12)

नारिकेलस्य वै पुष्पं छागक्षीरेण संयुतम् । पिबेच्च त्रिविधस्तस्य रक्तवातो विनश्यति

nārikelasya vai puṣpaṁ chāgakṣīreṇa saṁyutam pibecca trividhastasya raktavāto vinaśyati

The flower of coconut combined with goat's milk, when drunk, destroys the threefold rakta-vata (blood-wind disorder).

Verse 13 (garuda.1.189.13)

कुर्यात्सुदर्शनामूलं माल्येन सुसमाहृतम् । कण्ठबद्ध त्र्याहिकादिग्रहभूतविनाशनम्

kuryātsudarśanāmūlaṁ mālyena susamāhṛtam kaṇṭhabaddha tryāhikādigrahabhūtavināśanam

One should make a well-arranged garland of sudarshana's root; bound at the throat, it destroys tryahika (tertian) fever and affliction by grahas and bhutas.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.189.14)

पुष्पं धवलगुञ्जाया गृहीतं मूलमेव च । मुखे तु निहितं रुद्र हरेन्नानाविषं बहु

puṣpaṁ dhavalaguñjāyā gṛhītaṁ mūlameva ca mukhe tu nihitaṁ rudra harennānāviṣaṁ bahu

The flower of white gunja, taken together with its root and placed in the mouth, O Rudra, removes many kinds of poison.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.189.15)

हस्ते बद्धं काण्डयुक्तं कण्ठे बद्धं ग्रहादिहृत् । कृष्णायान्तु चतुर्दश्यां कटिबद्धं समाहृतम् । सिंहादिश्वापदाद्भीतिं हरेच्च नीललोहित

haste baddhaṁ kāṇḍayuktaṁ kaṇṭhe baddhaṁ grahādihṛt kṛṣṇāyāntu caturdaśyāṁ kaṭibaddhaṁ samāhṛtam siṁhādiśvāpadādbhītiṁ harecca nīlalohita

Bound on the hand together with its stalk, or bound at the throat, it removes affliction by grahas and the like; gathered on the dark fourteenth lunar day and bound at the waist, it removes fear of lions and other wild beasts, O blue-red one!

Verse 16 (garuda.1.189.16)

विष्णुक्रान्तामूलमीश कर्णबद्धन्तु धारयेत् । पट्टसूत्रेण भूतेश मकरादिभयं न वै

viṣṇukrāntāmūlamīśa karṇabaddhantu dhārayet paṭṭasūtreṇa bhūteśa makarādibhayaṁ na vai

The root of vishnukranta, O Lord, should be worn bound at the ear with a silk thread, O Lord of Beings — there is then no fear from crocodiles and the like.
