Antidotes for Poison from Bites and Stings
Verse 1 (garuda.1.191.1)
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १९१ हरिरुवाच । पुनर्नवाया मूलञ्च श्वेतं पुष्ये समाहृतम् । वारि पीतं तस्य पार्श्व भवनेषु न पन्नगाः
śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam 191 hariruvāca punarnavāyā mūlañca śvetaṁ puṣye samāhṛtam vāri pītaṁ tasya pārśva bhavaneṣu na pannagāḥ
Hari said: The root of white punarnava, gathered under the Pushya asterism — water drunk with it ensures serpents do not come near that person's dwelling.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.191.2)
तार्क्ष्यमूर्तिं वहेद्यो वै भल्लूकदन्तनिर्मिताम् । स पन्नगैर्न दृश्येत यावज्जीवं वृषध्वज
tārkṣyamūrtiṁ vahedyo vai bhallūkadantanirmitām sa pannagairna dṛśyeta yāvajjīvaṁ vṛṣadhvaja
One who wears a figure of Tarkshya (Garuda) made from a bear's tooth is never seen by serpents throughout life, O Vrishadhvaja.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.191.3)
पिबेच्छल्मलिमूलं यः पुष्यर्क्षे रुद्र वारिणा । तस्मिन्नपास्तदशना नागाः स्युर्नात्र संशयः
pibecchalmalimūlaṁ yaḥ puṣyarkṣe rudra vāriṇā tasminnapāstadaśanā nāgāḥ syurnātra saṁśayaḥ
One who drinks the root of shalmali with water under the Pushya asterism, O Rudra — near him, serpents' fangs become powerless; there is no doubt of this.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.191.4)
पुष्ये लज्जालुकामूले हस्तबद्धे तु पन्नगान् । गृह्णीयाल्लेपतो वापि नात्र कार्या विचारणा
puṣye lajjālukāmūle hastabaddhe tu pannagān gṛhṇīyāllepato vāpi nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Under the Pushya asterism, the root of lajjaluka bound on the hand allows one to catch serpents, or to be protected from them by applying it as a paste; there should be no doubt of this.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.191.5)
पुष्येश्वेतार्कमूलन्तु पीतं शीतेन वारिणा । नश्येतु दंशकविषं करवीरादिजं विषम्
puṣyeśvetārkamūlantu pītaṁ śītena vāriṇā naśyetu daṁśakaviṣaṁ karavīrādijaṁ viṣam
The root of white arka, drunk under Pushya with cold water, destroys the poison of a biting creature, and poison arising from karavira and the like.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.191.6)
महाकालस्य वै मूलं पिष्टं तत्काञ्जिकेन वै । वोड्राणां डुण्डुभानां च तल्लोपो हरते विषम्
mahākālasya vai mūlaṁ piṣṭaṁ tatkāñjikena vai voḍrāṇāṁ ḍuṇḍubhānāṁ ca tallopo harate viṣam
The root of mahakala, ground with fermented rice-water — its paste removes the poison of vodra and dundubha serpents.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.191.7)
तण्डुलीयकमूलं च पिष्टं तण्डुलवारिणा । घृतेन सह पीतन्तु हरेत्सर्वाविषाणि च
taṇḍulīyakamūlaṁ ca piṣṭaṁ taṇḍulavāriṇā ghṛtena saha pītantu haretsarvāviṣāṇi ca
The root of tanduliyaka, ground with rice-water and drunk together with ghee, removes every kind of poison.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.191.8)
नीलीलज्जालुकामूलं पिष्टं तण्डुलवारिणा । पीतं तद्दंशकविषं नश्येदेकेन वोभयोः
nīlīlajjālukāmūlaṁ piṣṭaṁ taṇḍulavāriṇā pītaṁ taddaṁśakaviṣaṁ naśyedekena vobhayoḥ
The root of nili and lajjaluka, ground with rice-water and drunk, destroys the poison of a biting creature — either type — by this one remedy.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.191.9)
कूष्माण्डकस्य स्वरसः सगुडः सहशर्करः । पीतः सदुग्धो हन्याच्च दंशकस्यविषं च वै
kūṣmāṇḍakasya svarasaḥ saguḍaḥ sahaśarkaraḥ pītaḥ sadugdho hanyācca daṁśakasyaviṣaṁ ca vai
The fresh juice of kushmanda combined with jaggery and sugar, drunk together with milk, destroys the poison of a biting creature.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.191.10)
तथा कोद्रवमूलस्य मोहस्य हर एव च । यष्टीमधुसमायुक्ता तथा पीता च शर्करा
tathā kodravamūlasya mohasya hara eva ca yaṣṭīmadhusamāyuktā tathā pītā ca śarkarā
Likewise the root of kodrava destroys confusion (of the mind), O Hara; and sugar combined with licorice, drunk,
Verse 11 (garuda.1.191.11)
सदुग्धा च त्रिरात्रेण मूषकानां विषं हरेत् । चुलुकत्रयपानाच्च वारिणः शीतलस्य वै
sadugdhā ca trirātreṇa mūṣakānāṁ viṣaṁ haret culukatrayapānācca vāriṇaḥ śītalasya vai
— together with milk over three nights, removes the poison of a mouse-bite. Drinking three handfuls of cold water likewise brings this benefit.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.191.12)
ताम्बूलदग्धमुखस्य लालास्त्रावो विनश्यति । घृतं सशर्करं षीत्वा मद्यपानमदो न वै
tāmbūladagdhamukhasya lālāstrāvo vinaśyati ghṛtaṁ saśarkaraṁ ṣītvā madyapānamado na vai
The drooling of a mouth burnt by betel is destroyed by this. Drinking ghee combined with sugar prevents intoxication from wine-drinking.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.191.13)
कृष्णाङ्कोलस्य मूलेन पीतं सुक्वथितं जलम् । ततो नश्यद्गरविषं त्रिरात्रेण महेश्वर
kṛṣṇāṅkolasya mūlena pītaṁ sukvathitaṁ jalam tato naśyadgaraviṣaṁ trirātreṇa maheśvara
With the root of krishnankola, well-boiled water, when drunk, destroys gara-poison (a compounded poison) within three nights, O Maheshvara.
Verse 14 (garuda.1.191.14)
उष्णं गव्यघृतं चैव सैन्धवेन समन्वितम् । नाशयेत्तन्महादेव वेदनां वृश्चिकोद्भवाम्
uṣṇaṁ gavyaghṛtaṁ caiva saindhavena samanvitam nāśayettanmahādeva vedanāṁ vṛścikodbhavām
Warm cow's ghee combined with rock salt destroys, O Mahadeva, the pain arising from a scorpion's sting.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.191.15)
कुसुभं कङ्कुमञ्चैव हरितालं मनः शिला । करञ्जं पिषितं चैव ह्यर्कमूलं च शङ्कर
kusubhaṁ kaṅkumañcaiva haritālaṁ manaḥ śilā karañjaṁ piṣitaṁ caiva hyarkamūlaṁ ca śaṅkara
Kusumbha, saffron, orpiment, manahshila, karanja, ground together, and the root of arka, O Shankara —
Verse 16 (garuda.1.191.16)
विषंनृणां विनश्येत्तु एतेषां भक्षणाच्छिव । दीपतैलप्रदानाच्च दंशैराकीटजैः शिव । खर्जूरकविषं नश्येत्तदा वै नात्र संशयः
viṣaṁnṛṇāṁ vinaśyettu eteṣāṁ bhakṣaṇācchiva dīpatailapradānācca daṁśairākīṭajaiḥ śiva kharjūrakaviṣaṁ naśyettadā vai nātra saṁśayaḥ
— by eating these, the poison in men is destroyed, O Shiva. The poison from the bite of a date-palm insect is likewise destroyed by applying lamp-oil, without doubt.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.191.17)
दंशस्थानं वृश्चिकस्य शुण्ठी तगरसंयुता । नश्येन्मधुमक्षिकाया एतेषां लेपतो विषम्
daṁśasthānaṁ vṛścikasya śuṇṭhī tagarasaṁyutā naśyenmadhumakṣikāyā eteṣāṁ lepato viṣam
Dry ginger combined with tagara, applied at the site of a scorpion sting, destroys the pain; the poison of a honey-bee is likewise destroyed by applying a paste of these.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.191.18)
शतपुष्पा सैन्धवञ्च साज्यं वा तेन लेपयेत् । शिरीषस्य तु बीजंवै सिद्ध क्षीरेण घर्षितम्
śatapuṣpā saindhavañca sājyaṁ vā tena lepayet śirīṣasya tu bījaṁvai siddha kṣīreṇa gharṣitam
Shatapushpa and rock salt, combined with ghee, should be applied as a paste. The seed of shirisha, processed and rubbed with milk —
Verse 19 (garuda.1.191.19)
तल्लेपेन महादेव नश्येत्कुक्कुरजं विषम् । ज्वलिताग्निर्वारिसेको तथा दर्दुरजं विषम्
tallepena mahādeva naśyetkukkurajaṁ viṣam jvalitāgnirvāriseko tathā dardurajaṁ viṣam
— applying this as a paste, O Mahadeva, destroys the poison from a dog's bite. A blazing fire, and sprinkling with water, likewise destroy the poison from a frog's bite.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.191.20)
धत्तूरकरसोन्मिश्रं क्षीराद्यगुडपानतः । शूनां विषं विनश्येत्तु शशाङ्काङ्कितशेखर
dhattūrakarasonmiśraṁ kṣīrādyaguḍapānataḥ śūnāṁ viṣaṁ vinaśyettu śaśāṅkāṅkitaśekhara
Mixed with the juice of dhattura and taken as a drink with milk and jaggery, the poison of dogs is destroyed, O crest-jewel marked with the moon.
Verse 21 (garuda.1.191.21)
वटनिम्बशमीनाञ्च वल्कलैः क्वथितं जलम् । तत्सेकान्मुखदन्तानां नश्येद्वै विषवेदना
vaṭanimbaśamīnāñca valkalaiḥ kvathitaṁ jalam tatsekānmukhadantānāṁ naśyedvai viṣavedanā
Water boiled with the bark of the banyan, neem, and shami — sprinkling this on the mouth and teeth destroys the pain of poison.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.191.22)
लेपनाद्देवदारोश्च गैरिकस्य च लेपनात् । नागेश्वरो दरिद्रे द्वे तथा मञ्जिष्ठका हर । एभिर्लेपाद्विनश्येत्तु लूताविषमुमापते
lepanāddevadārośca gairikasya ca lepanāt nāgeśvaro daridre dve tathā mañjiṣṭhakā hara ebhirlepādvinaśyettu lūtāviṣamumāpate
Applying a paste of devadaru, and a paste of gairika; nageshvara and both daridra plants, and manjishtha, O Hara — applying these as a paste destroys the poison of a spider, O Lord of Uma.
Verse 23 (garuda.1.191.23)
करञ्जस्य तु बीजानि वरुणच्छदमेव च । तिलाश्च सर्षपा हन्युर्विषं वै नात्र संशयः
karañjasya tu bījāni varuṇacchadameva ca tilāśca sarṣapā hanyurviṣaṁ vai nātra saṁśayaḥ
The seeds of karanja and varuna-leaf, sesame and mustard, destroy poison — there is no doubt of this.
Verse 24 (garuda.1.191.24)
घृतं कुमारीपत्रं वै दत्तं सलवणं हर । तुरङ्गमशरीराणां कण्डूर्नश्येद्दशाहतः
ghṛtaṁ kumārīpatraṁ vai dattaṁ salavaṇaṁ hara turaṅgamaśarīrāṇāṁ kaṇḍūrnaśyeddaśāhataḥ
Ghee and the leaf of kumari (aloe vera), given together with salt, O Hara — the itching of horses' bodies is destroyed within ten days.
