Chapter 22All chaptersChapter 24

Verse 1 (padma.1.23.1)

bhīṣma uvāca vaiṣṇavā ye tu vai dharmā yānrudraḥ proktavāniha tānme kathaya vipreṁdra kīdṛśāste phalaṁ tu kim

Bhishma said: Tell me, O foremost of brahmins, of those Vaishnava dharmas which Rudra has spoken of here — of what nature they are, and what their fruit is.

Verse 2 (padma.1.23.2)

pulastya uvāca purā rathantare kalpe paripṛṣṭo mahātmanā mandarastho mahādevaḥ pinākī brahmaṇā svayam

Pulastya said: Long ago, in the Rathantara kalpa, the great god Mahadeva, dwelling on Mount Mandara, wielder of the Pinaka, was asked by Brahma himself—

Verse 3 (padma.1.23.3)

kathamārogyamaiśvaryamanaṁtamamareśvara alpena tapasā deva bhavenmokṣaḥ sadā nṛṇāṁ

'How, O lord of the immortals, may health and boundless lordship, and, O god, liberation, always come to men with little austerity?'

Verse 4 (padma.1.23.4)

kiṁ tajjñānaṁ mahādeva tvatprasādādadhokṣaja alpakenāpi tapasā mahāphalamihocyate

'What is that knowledge, O Mahadeva, by whose grace, O Adhokshaja, even with the least austerity, great fruit is spoken of here?'

Verse 5 (padma.1.23.5)

iti pṛṣṭassa viśvātmā brahmaṇā lokabhāvanaḥ umāpatiruvācedaṁ manasaḥ prītikārakam

Thus asked by Brahma, the creator of the worlds, the soul of the universe, the husband of Uma, spoke this, delighting the mind.

Verse 6 (padma.1.23.6)

īśvara uvāca asmādrathaṁtarātkalpādbhūyo viñśatimo yadā vārāho bhavitā kalpastadā manvantare śubhe

Ishvara said: From this Rathantara kalpa, when the twentieth kalpa hence shall come to be — the Varaha kalpa — then, in that auspicious manvantara—

Verse 7 (padma.1.23.7)

vaivasvatākhye samprāpte saptame saptalokadhṛk dvāparākhyaṁyugaṁ tasminsaptaviṁśatimaṁ yadā

—when the seventh, called Vaivasvata, has arrived, O sustainer of the seven worlds, and in it, when the twenty-seventh age called Dvapara has come—

Verse 8 (padma.1.23.8)

tasyāṁ te tu mahātejā vāsudevo janārdanaḥ bhārāvataraṇārthāya tridhā viṣṇurbhaviṣyati

—then, in that age, the greatly radiant Vasudeva Janardana, Vishnu, for the purpose of relieving the earth's burden, shall become threefold.

Verse 9 (padma.1.23.9)

dvaipāyana ṛṣistatra rauhiṇeyotha keśavaḥ kaṁsāriḥ keśimathanaḥ keśavaḥ kleśanāśanaḥ

There, he shall be the sage Dvaipayana, and then Rauhineya, and Keshava — the enemy of Kamsa, the slayer of Keshi, Keshava, the destroyer of afflictions.

Verse 10 (padma.1.23.10)

purīṁ dvāravatīṁ nāma sāmprataṁ yā kuśasthalī divyānubhāvasaṁyuktāmadhivāsāya śārṅgiṇaḥ

—the city named Dvaravati, which is now Kushasthali, endowed with divine majesty, for the dwelling of Sharngin—

Verse 11 (padma.1.23.11)

tvaṣṭā tadājñayā brahmankariṣyati jagatpateḥ tasyāṁ kadācidāsīnaḥ sabhāyāṁ so'mitadyutiḥ

—Tvashta, O Brahman, by the command of the lord of the world, shall build. Once, seated in the assembly-hall there, that one of boundless splendor—

Verse 12 (padma.1.23.12)

bhāryābhirvṛṣṇividvadbhibhūribhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ kurubhirdevagandharvairanvitaḥ kaiṭabhārdanaḥ

—surrounded by his wives, by many learned men of the Vrishni clan of great liberality, by the Kurus, and by gods and gandharvas — the slayer of Kaitabha—

Verse 13 (padma.1.23.13)

pravṛttāsu purāṇāsu dharmasambandhadhinīṣu ca kathāsu bhīmasenena paripṛṣṭaḥ pratāpavān

—when tales connected with dharma, born of the Puranas, were in progress, the mighty Bhimasena questioned him.

Verse 14 (padma.1.23.14)

tvayā pṛṣṭasya dharmasya vakṣyatyasya ca bhedadṛk bhavitā sa tadā brahmankartā caiva vṛkodaraḥ

'Of the dharma you have asked of, I shall declare its distinctions; and, O Brahman, Vrikodara himself shall then become its practitioner.'

Verse 15 (padma.1.23.15)

pravartako'sya dharmasya pāṇḍusūnurmahābalaḥ yasya tīkṣṇo vṛko nāma jaṭhare havyavāhanaḥ

The mighty son of Pandu shall be the propagator of this dharma — he in whose belly burns a fierce fire named Vrika, the wolf.

Verse 16 (padma.1.23.16)

sambhāṣyate sa dharmātmā tena cāsau vṛkodaraḥ atīva svādaśīlaśca nāgāyuta balo mahān

That righteous soul is therefore called Vrikodara; he is exceedingly fond of good food, and mighty, with the strength of ten thousand elephants.

Verse 17 (padma.1.23.17)

dhārmikasyāpyaśaktasya tīvrāgnitvādupoṣaṇe idaṁ vratamaśeṣāṇāṁ vratānāmadhikaṁ yataḥ

Since, even for one who is righteous, fasting is difficult on account of a fierce digestive fire, this vow is superior to all other vows.

Verse 18 (padma.1.23.18)

kathayiṣyati viśvātmā vāsudevo jagadguruḥ aśeṣayajñaphaladamaśeṣāghavināśanam

The soul of the universe, Vasudeva, teacher of the world, shall declare it — a vow bestowing the fruit of every sacrifice, destroying every sin.

Verse 19 (padma.1.23.19)

aśeṣaduṣṭaśamanamaśeṣasurapūjitam pavitrāṇāṁ pavitraṁ yanmagalānāṁ ca maṅgalam bhaviṣyaṁ ca bhaviṣyāṇāṁ purāṇānāṁ purātanam

—quelling every wicked thing, honored by every god; the purest among pure things, and the most auspicious among auspicious things; a thing yet-to-be among things yet-to-be, and the oldest among the ancient scriptures.

Verse 20 (padma.1.23.20)

vāsudeva uvāca yadyaṣṭamī caturddaśyordvādaśīṣu ca bhārata anyeṣvapi dinarkṣeṣu naśaktastvamupoṣitum

Vasudeva said: If, O Bharata, on the eighth, on the two fourteenths, on the twelfths, or on other days and constellations, you are unable to fast—

Verse 21 (padma.1.23.21)

tatastvagryāmimāṁ bhīma tithiṁ pāpapraṇāśinīm upoṣya vidhinānena gaccha viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padaṁ

—then, O Bhima, by fasting on this foremost tithi, destroyer of sin, according to this rite, go to the supreme abode of Vishnu.

Verse 22 (padma.1.23.22)

māghamāsasya daśamī yadā śuklā bhavettadā ghṛtenābhyaṁjanaṁ kṛtvā tilaiḥ snānaṁ samācaret

When the tenth of the bright fortnight of the month of Magha arrives, one should anoint oneself with ghee and perform a bath with sesame.

Verse 23 (padma.1.23.23)

tathaiva viṣṇumabhyarcennamo nārāyaṇāya ca kṛṣṇāya pādau saṁpūjya śiraḥkṛṣṇātmaneti ca

Likewise one should worship Vishnu: 'homage to Narayana,' worshipping the feet 'to Krishna,' and the head 'to him whose self is Krishna.'

Verse 24 (padma.1.23.24)

vaikuṇṭhāyeti vaikuṇṭhamuraḥ śrīvatsadhāriṇe śaṅkhine gadine caiva cakriṇe varadāya vai

'To Vaikuntha' the chest, 'to the bearer of the Shrivatsa mark'; 'to the conch-holder,' 'to the mace-holder,' and 'to the discus-holder, granter of boons.'

Verse 25 (padma.1.23.25)

sarvaṁ nārāyaṇantvevaṁ sampūjyāvāhanakramāt dāmodarāyetyudaraṁ kaṭiṁ pañcajanāya vai

Having thus worshipped the whole form as Narayana, in the order of invocation — 'to Damodara' the belly, 'to Panchajanya' the hip.

Verse 26 (padma.1.23.26)

ūrūsaubhāgyanāthāya jānunī bhūtadhāriṇe namo nīlāya vai jaṅghe pādau viśvabhuje punaḥ

'To the lord of good fortune' the thighs, 'to the sustainer of beings' the knees; 'homage to the dark one' the shins, and again 'to the universal-armed one' the feet.

Verse 27 (padma.1.23.27)

namo devyai namaḥ śāṁtyai namo lakṣmyai namaḥ śriyai namastuṣṭyai namaḥ puṣṭyai dhṛtyai vyuṣṭyai namo namaḥ

Homage to the Goddess, homage to Shanti, homage to Lakshmi, homage to Shri; homage to Tushti, homage to Pushti, and homage again and again to Dhriti and Vyushti.

Verse 28 (padma.1.23.28)

namo vihaṅganāthāya vāyuvegāya pakṣiṇe viṣapramathanāyeti garuḍaṁ cābhipūjayet

'Homage to the lord of birds, swift as the wind, the winged one, the destroyer of poison' — thus one should worship Garuda.

Verse 29 (padma.1.23.29)

evaṁ sampūjya govindamumāpativināyakau gandhairmālyaistathā dhūpairbhakṣyairnānāvidhairapi

Having thus worshipped Govinda, and Uma's husband and Vinayaka, with scents, garlands, incense, and various foods too—

Verse 30 (padma.1.23.30)

gavyena payasā siktāṁ kṛsarāmatha pāyasam sarpiṣā saha bhuktvā tu gatvā sthānāṁtaraṁ punaḥ

—one should eat kṛsara sprinkled with cow's milk, and rice-pudding together with ghee; then, going to another place—

Verse 31 (padma.1.23.31)

naiyagrodhaṁ dantakāṣṭhamathavā khādiraṁ budhaḥ gṛhītvā dhāvayeddantānācāntaḥ prāgudaṅmukhaḥ

—the wise man should take a tooth-twig of banyan or khadira wood, and, having sipped water, clean the teeth facing east or north.

Verse 32 (padma.1.23.32)

brūyātsāyantanīṁ kṛtvā sandhyāmastamite ravau namo nārāyaṇāyeti tvāmahaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ

Having performed the evening twilight-rite when the sun has set, one should say: 'Homage to Narayana; I have gone to you for refuge.'

Verse 33 (padma.1.23.33)

ekādaśyāṁ nirāhāraḥ samabhyarcya ca keśavam tāṁ rātriṁ sakalāṁ sthitvā śeṣaparyaṁkaśāyinam

On the eleventh, fasting completely, having worshipped Keshava, and remaining awake the whole of that night, worshipping him who reclines on the couch of Shesha—

Verse 34 (padma.1.23.34)

sarpiṣā viśvadahanaṁ hutvā brāhmaṇapuṅgavaiḥ sahaiva puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ dvādaśyāṁ kṣīrabhojanam

—having, with ghee, made oblation to Fire, together with foremost brahmins, and to Pundarikaksha, on the twelfth one should partake of a meal of milk.

Verse 35 (padma.1.23.35)

kariṣyāmi yathātmānaṁ nirvighnenāstu tacca me evamuktvā svapedbhūmāvitihāsakathāṁ punaḥ

'I shall so act that this may be for me without obstruction.' Having said this, one should sleep on the ground, after hearing again a tale from the Itihasas.

Verse 36 (padma.1.23.36)

śrutvā prabhāte sañjāte nadīṁ gatvā viśāmpate snānaṁ kṛtvā mudā tadvatpāṣaṇḍānabhivarjayet

Having heard it, when morning has come, O lord of the people, one should go to a river and bathe with joy, and likewise avoid heretics.

Verse 37 (padma.1.23.37)

upāsya sandhyāṁ vidhivatkṛtvā ca pitṛtarpaṇam praṇamya ca hṛṣīkeśaṁ śeṣaparyaṅkaśāyinam

Having duly performed the twilight worship and the offering of water to the ancestors, and having bowed to Hrishikesha, who reclines on the couch of Shesha—

Verse 38 (padma.1.23.38)

gṛhasya purato bhaktyā maṇḍapaṁ kārayedbudhaḥ caturhastāṁ śubhāṁ kuryādvedīmariniṣūdana

—the wise man should devotedly have a pavilion made before the house, O slayer of foes, and make an auspicious altar of four cubits.

Verse 39 (padma.1.23.39)

caturhastapramāṇaṁ tu vinyasettatra toraṇam madhye ca kalaśaṁ tatra māṣamātreṇa sañyutam

He should set up there a festoon-arch four cubits in measure, and in the middle a jar there, filled with a measure of black gram.

Verse 40 (padma.1.23.40)

chidreṇa jalasampūrṇamadhaḥ kṛṣṇājine sthitaḥ tasya dhārāṁ ca śirasā dhārayetsakalāṁ niśām

The jar, pierced with a hole, filled with water, resting below on a black antelope skin — its stream one should bear on the head for the whole night.

Verse 41 (padma.1.23.41)

dhārābhirbhūribhirbhūri phalaṁ vedavido viduḥ yasmāttasmātkuruśreṣṭha kārayetprayato dvijaḥ

The knowers of the Vedas know that abundant streams yield abundant fruit; therefore, O best of the Kurus, a pure brahmin should have it performed.

Verse 42 (padma.1.23.42)

dakṣiṇe cārdhacandraṁ tu paścime vartulaṁ tathā aśvatthapatrākāraṁ ca uttareṇa tu kārayet

On the south he should make a half-moon shape, on the west likewise a circle, and toward the north the shape of a peepal leaf.

Verse 43 (padma.1.23.43)

madhye tu padmākāraṁ ca kārayedvaiṣṇavo dvijaḥ pūrvato vedikāṁ stho na stho na yāmye ca kalpayet

In the middle a Vaishnava brahmin should make the shape of a lotus. Standing to the east of the altar — not to the south — he should perform this.

Verse 44 (padma.1.23.44)

pānīyadhārāṁ śirasi dhārayedviṣṇutatparaḥ dvitīyā vedī devasya tatra padmaṁ sakarṇikam

One devoted to Vishnu should bear the stream of water on the head; a second altar for the god should have there a lotus with its pericarp.

Verse 45 (padma.1.23.45)

tasya madhye sthitaṁ devaṁ kuryādvai puruṣottamam hastamātraṁ ca tatkuṇḍaṁ kṛtvā tatra trimekhalam

In the middle of it the god Purushottama should be placed. And a fire-pit one cubit across, with three enclosing ridges, should be made there.

Verse 46 (padma.1.23.46)

yonivaktraṁ tatastasminbrāhmaṇairyavasarpiṣī tilāñśca viṣṇudevatyairmaṁtrairevānale hunet

With a yoni-shaped mouth; then in it, by brahmins, barley and ghee, and sesame, should be offered into the fire with mantras addressed to Vishnu.

Verse 47 (padma.1.23.47)

kṛtvā tu vaiṣṇavaṁ samyagyāgaṁ tatra prakalpayet ājyadhārā madhyame tu kuṁḍe dadyāttu yatnataḥ

Having duly performed the Vaishnava rite, he should arrange the sacrifice there; and into the middle of the pit he should carefully pour a stream of ghee.

Verse 48 (padma.1.23.48)

kṣīradhārāṁ devadeve vāridhārātmanopari niṣpāvārdhapramāṇāṁ vai dhārāmājyasya pātayet

He should offer a stream of milk to the god of gods, and a stream of water upon himself; he should let fall a stream of ghee half the measure of a bean-pod.

Verse 49 (padma.1.23.49)

svecchayā kṣīrajalayoravicchinnāṁ ca śarvarīṁ jalakumbhānmahāvīrya sthāpayitvā trayodaśa

At will, an unbroken stream of milk and water throughout the night; O mighty one, having set up thirteen water-jars—

Verse 50 (padma.1.23.50)

bhakṣyairnānāvidhairyuktānsitavastrairalaṅkṛtān pratānaudumbaraiḥ pātraiḥ pañcaratnasamanvitaiḥ

—furnished with various foods, adorned with white cloths, together with spreading vessels of udumbara wood, joined with the five gems.

Verse 51 (padma.1.23.51)

caturbhirbahvṛcairhomaḥ kāryastatra udaṅmukhaiḥ rudrajāpyaścaturbhiśca yajurvedaparāyaṇaiḥ

The homa should be performed there by four Rigvedic brahmins facing north; and Rudra-japa by four devoted to the Yajurveda.

Verse 52 (padma.1.23.52)

vaiṣṇavāni ca sāmāni caturbhiḥ sāmavedibhiḥ evaṁ dvādaśa vai viprānvastramālyānulepanaiḥ

And Vaishnava Sama-hymns by four knowers of the Samaveda — thus twelve brahmins in all, to be honored with garments, garlands and unguents.

Verse 53 (padma.1.23.53)

pūjayedaṅgulīyaiśca kaṭakairhemasūtrakaiḥ vāsobhiḥ śayanīyaiśca vittaśāṭhyavivarjitaḥ

One should honor them with rings, with bracelets, with golden threads, with clothing and beds, free from stinginess with wealth.

Verse 54 (padma.1.23.54)

evaṁ kṣapātivāhyā vai gītamaṅgalaniḥsvanaiḥ upādhyāyasya ca punardviguṇaṁ sarvameva tu

Thus the night should be passed with the sounds of auspicious song; and to the officiating teacher, everything again should be given in double measure.

Verse 55 (padma.1.23.55)

tataḥ prabhāte vimale samutthāya trayodaśa gāvo deyāḥ kuruśreṣṭha sauvarṇaśṛṅgasaṁvṛtāḥ

Then, at clear dawn, having risen, thirteen cows should be given, O best of the Kurus, their horns covered with gold—

Verse 56 (padma.1.23.56)

payasvinyaḥ śīlavatyaḥ kāṁsyadohasamanvitāḥ raupyakhurāḥ savatsāśca candanenābhibhūṣitāḥ

—milk-giving, well-behaved, together with bronze milking-vessels, with silver hooves, with their calves, and adorned with sandal.

Verse 57 (padma.1.23.57)

tāstu teṣāṁ tato datvā bhakṣyabhojyena tarpitān kṛtvā vai brāhmaṇānsarvānchatrairnānāvidhaistathā

Having given these to them, and having satisfied all the brahmins with food and drink, and likewise with various parasols—

Homage to Pushti, homage to Tushti, homage to the wealth of every aim. Having thus worshipped Govinda, the lord in the form of the Bodiless One—

Verse 119 (padma.1.23.119)

Verse 122 (padma.1.23.122)

ratyarthaṁ kāmadevoyamiti citte ca dhārayet yadyadicchati vipreṁdrastattatkuryādvilāsinī

—she should hold in her mind, 'this is Kamadeva himself, for the sake of union.' Whatever the foremost brahmin desires, that the graceful woman should do.

Verse 123 (padma.1.23.123)

And the gift of a prastha of rice should continue for thirteen months. Then, when the thirteenth month has arrived, that woman—

Verse 125 (padma.1.23.125)

viprasyopaskarairyuktāṁ śayyāṁ dadyādvicakṣaṇā sopadhānāṁ savinyāsāṁ svāstarāvaraṇāṁ śubhām

Verse 129 (padma.1.23.129)

dadyādanena mantreṇa tathaikāṁ gāṁ payasvinīm yathāṁtaraṁ na paśyāmi kāmakeśavayoḥ sadā

She should give this, together with a single milk-giving cow, with this mantra: 'As I see no difference at all between Kama and Keshava—'

Verse 130 (padma.1.23.130)

tathaiva sarvakāmāptirastu vipra sadā mama tathā ca kāṁcanaṁ devaṁ pratigṛhya dvijottamaḥ

'—so may the attainment of all my desires likewise always be, O brahmin.' And thus, the most excellent brahmin, having accepted the golden god—

Verse 131 (padma.1.23.131)

kodātkāmodāditi vaidikaṁ maṁtramudīrayet tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya visṛjya dvijapuṁgavam

Verse 132 (padma.1.23.132)

śayyāsanādikaṁ sarvaṁ brāhmaṇasya gṛhaṁ nayet tataḥ prabhṛti yo'nyopi ratyarthaṁ gehamāgataḥ

—she should have the bed, seat, and everything else carried to the brahmin's house. From then on, whoever else too comes to the house for the sake of union—

Verse 133 (padma.1.23.133)

sammānya sūryavāreṇa sa saṁpūjyo bhavetsadā evaṁ trayodaśaṁ yāvanmāsamekaṁ dvijottamam

—honoring him, on a Sunday he should always be worshipped. Thus, for thirteen months, the most excellent brahmin, for one month—

Verse 134 (padma.1.23.134)

—having satisfied him as desired, she should send him to his own home. With his permission, she may receive a handsome man, until his return.

Verse 135 (padma.1.23.135)

ātmanopi yadā vighnaṁ garbhasūtakarājakam daivaṁ vā mānuṣaṁ vā syāduparāgeṇa vā tataḥ

When there should be, for herself, an obstacle — pregnancy, childbirth, the king's business, whether divine or human, or on account of an eclipse—

Verse 136 (padma.1.23.136)

sāvārā naṣṭapaṁcāśadyathāśakti samarpayet etaddhi kathitaṁ samyagbhavatīnāṁ viśeṣataḥ

—she should offer, in place of the rite, fifty coins as forfeit, according to her means. This indeed has been duly declared, especially for you.

Verse 137 (padma.1.23.137)

svadharmoyaṁ yato bhāvyo veśyānāmiha sarvadā śayyayā tyajyate deva na kadācidyathā bhavān

Since this is to be your own dharma always, O courtesans — 'By the bed, O god, the devotee is never abandoned, just as you never abandon your devotee—'

Verse 138 (padma.1.23.138)

śayyā mamāpyaśūnyeyaṁ tathāstu madhusūdana gītavāditranirghoṣaṁ devadevasya kārayet

'—so may this bed of mine too never be empty, O Madhusudana.' One should cause the sound of song and instrument to be made for the god of gods.

Verse 139 (padma.1.23.139)

etadvaḥ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ veśyādharmamaśeṣataḥ puruhūtena yatproktaṁ dānavīṣu purā mayā

All of this has been declared to you — the entire dharma of courtesans — which was told by Purandara and spoken by me of old to the danava-women.

Verse 140 (padma.1.23.140)

tadidaṁ sāṁprataṁ sarvaṁ bhavatīṣvapi yujyate sarvapāpapraśamanamanaṁtaphaladāyakam

That same teaching now applies fully to you as well — the quelling of every sin, bestowing endless fruit.

Verse 141 (padma.1.23.141)

kalyāṇinīnāṁ kathitaṁ tadetadduścaraṁ vratam karoti yā'śeṣamudagrametatkalyāṇinī mādhavalokasaṁsthā

This has been declared as the Kalyani-vow of blessed women, difficult to perform. Whoever performs it fully and with zeal becomes a Kalyani, established in Madhava's world.

Verse 142 (padma.1.23.142)

sā pūjitā devagaṇairaśeṣairānaṁdakṛtsthānamupaiti viṣṇoḥ tapodhanaḥ sopyabhidhāya caitadanaṁgadānavratamaṁganānām

Honored by all the hosts of gods, she attains the joy-bringing abode of Vishnu. That one rich in austerity, having thus declared this vow of the gift of the Bodiless One for women—

Verse 143 (padma.1.23.143)

svasthānameṣyaṁti samastamitthaṁ vrataṁ kariṣyaṁti ca devayone

—they shall all reach their own heavenly abode, having thus performed the vow, O offspring of the gods.
