bhīṣma uvāca diteḥ putrāḥ kathaṁ jātā maruto devavallabhāḥ devairjagmuśca sāpatnaiḥ kasmātsakhyamanuttamam

Bhishma said: How were the Maruts, dear to the gods, born as sons of Diti? And how, being the sons of a rival, did they come to enjoy such supreme friendship with the gods?

Verse 2 (padma.1.7.2)

pulastya uvāca purā daivāsure yuddhe hateṣu hariṇā suraiḥ putrapautreṣu śokārtā gatā bhūlokamuttamam

Pulastya said: Formerly, in the war between gods and asuras, when Diti's sons and grandsons were slain by Hari together with the gods, she, stricken with grief, went to the excellent world of mortals.

Verse 3 (padma.1.7.3)

At Pushkara, the great sacred site, on the auspicious bank of the Sarasvati, intent on propitiating her husband, she practiced fierce austerity.

Verse 4 (padma.1.7.4)

ditirvai daityamātā tu ṛṣikāryeṇa suvratā phalāhārā tapastepe kṛcchracāṁdrāyaṇādibhiḥ

Diti, mother of the Daityas, of good vows, for the sake of the sage's work, subsisting on fruits, practiced austerity through Krichchhra, Chandrayana and other such vows,

Verse 5 (padma.1.7.5)

yāvadvarṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ jarāśokasamākulā tataḥ sā tapasā taptā vasiṣṭhādīnapṛcchata

for a full hundred years and more, overcome by old age and grief. Then, wasted by austerity, she asked Vasishtha and the other sages:

Verse 6 (padma.1.7.6)

kathayaṁtu bhavaṁto me putraśokavināśanam vrataṁ saubhāgyaphaladamihaloke paratra ca

'Please tell me of a vow that destroys the grief for a son, and grants the fruit of good fortune both in this world and the next.'

Verse 7 (padma.1.7.7)

ūcurvasiṣṭhapramukhā jyeṣṭhasya pūrṇimāvratam yasya prasādādabhavatsutaśokavivarjitā

Vasishtha and the other sages spoke of the Purnima vow of Jyeshtha month, by whose grace she became freed from grief for her son.

Verse 8 (padma.1.7.8)

bhīṣma uvāca śrotumicchāmyahaṁ brahmanjyeṣṭhasya pūrṇimāvratam sutānekonapaṁcāśadyena lebhe punarditiḥ

Bhishma said: O Brahmin, I wish to hear of that Purnima vow of the month Jyeshtha, by which Diti obtained forty-nine sons again.

Verse 9 (padma.1.7.9)

Pulastya said: That very vow which was formerly declared to Diti by Vasishtha and the other sages, hear now the same in detail from me.

Verse 10 (padma.1.7.10)

tasmādupari brahmāṇaṁ sauvarṇaṁ padmakoṭare kuryātśarkarayopetāṁ sāvitrīṁ tasya vāmataḥ

Upon that, one should make a golden image of Brahma within the hollow of a lotus, and place Savitri, made of sugar, on his left.

Verse 14 (padma.1.7.14)

gaṁdhaṁdhūpaṁ tayordadyādgītaṁ vādyaṁ ca kārayet tadabhāve kathaṁ kuryādyathā padme pitāmahaḥ

One should offer perfume and incense to both of them, and cause song and music to be performed. If that is not available, one should still fashion the image as the Grandsire seated on the lotus.

Verse 15 (padma.1.7.15)

One should feed a brahmin with devotion, taking no salt oneself; with devotion one should circumambulate him, uttering this mantra:

Verse 20 (padma.1.7.20)

prīyatāmatra bhagavānsarvalokapitāmahaḥ hṛdaye sarvalokānāṁ yastvānaṁdobhidhīyate

'May the illustrious Grandsire of all the worlds be pleased — he who is called Bliss in the hearts of all beings.'

Verse 21 (padma.1.7.21)

anena vidhinā sarvaṁ māsimāsi samācaret upavāsī paurṇamāsyāmarcayedbrāhmamavyayam

This entire rite should be performed month by month; fasting on the full-moon day, one should worship the imperishable Brahma.

Verse 22 (padma.1.7.22)

Partaking of only a single fruit, one should sleep on the ground at night. Then, in the thirteenth month, together with a cow of ghee,

Verse 23 (padma.1.7.23)

śayyāṁ dadyādviriṁcāya sarvopaskarasaṁyutām brahmāṇaṁ kāṁcanaṁ kṛtvā sāvitrīṁ rajataistathā

a bed, furnished with all its accessories, should be given to Brahma; having made an image of Brahma of gold, and Savitri likewise of silver,

Verse 24 (padma.1.7.24)

padmātmakaḥ sṛṣṭikarttā sāvitrīmupalabhyatu vastrairdvijaṁ sapatnīkaṁ pūjya bhaktyā vibhūṣaṇaiḥ

the lotus-born Creator, together with Savitri, should be given away; a brahmin, together with his wife, should be worshipped with devotion, garments and ornaments.

Verse 25 (padma.1.7.25)

According to one's ability, a cow and the like should be given, saying 'may he be pleased.' A fire-offering should be made with white sesame, reciting the names of Brahma;

Verse 26 (padma.1.7.26)

gavyena sarpiṣā tadvatpāyasena ca dharmavit viprebhyotha dhanaṁ dadyātpuṣpamālāṁ ca śaktitaḥ

likewise with cow's ghee, and with rice-pudding, O knower of dharma. Wealth should then be given to the brahmins, and a garland of flowers according to one's ability.

Verse 27 (padma.1.7.27)

yaḥ kuryādvidhinānena paurṇamāsyāṁ striyopi vā sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ prāpnoti brahmasātmyatām

Whoever performs this on the full-moon day according to this rite, whether man or woman, becomes freed from all sin and attains oneness with Brahma.

Verse 28 (padma.1.7.28)

ihaloke varānputrānsaubhāgyaṁ dhruvamaśnute yo brahmā sa smṛto viṣṇurānaṁdātmā maheśvaraḥ

In this world one obtains excellent sons and certain good fortune. He who is Brahma is remembered as Vishnu, the Self of bliss, and Maheshvara.

Verse 29 (padma.1.7.29)

sukhārthī kāmarūpeṇa smareddevaṁ pitāmaham evaṁ śrutvā cakārāsau ditiḥ sarvamaśeṣataḥ

One who desires happiness should remember the god, the Grandsire, in whatever form one desires. Having heard this, Diti performed all of it in its entirety.

Verse 30 (padma.1.7.30)

kaśyapo vratamāhātmyādāgatya parayā mudā cakāra karkaśāṁ bhūyo rūpalāvaṇyasaṁyutām

By the greatness of the vow, Kashyapa came to her with the greatest joy, and made her, once harsh with grief, again endowed with beauty and loveliness.

Verse 31 (padma.1.7.31)

varairāchaṁdayāmāsa sā tu vavre varaṁvaram putraṁ śakravadhārthāya samarthaṁ ca mahaujasam

He offered her boons; and she chose the best of boons — a son capable of slaying Shakra, of great might.

Verse 32 (padma.1.7.32)

varayāmi mahātmānaṁ sarvāmaraniṣūdanam uvāca kaśyapo vākyamiṁdrahaṁtāramūrjitam

'I choose a great-souled son, the destroyer of all the gods.' Regarding the mighty slayer of Indra, Kashyapa spoke:

Verse 33 (padma.1.7.33)

pradāsyāmyahametena kintvetatkriyatāṁ śubhe āpastaṁbīṁ tu kṛtveṣṭiṁ putrīyāmadya sustani

'I shall grant you this, but let this be done, O auspicious one: perform today the Apastambi rite, the sacrifice for a son, O fair-breasted one.'

Verse 34 (padma.1.7.34)

vidhāsyāmi tato garbhaṁ spṛṣṭvāhaṁ te stanau śubhe bhaviṣyati śubho garbho devi śakraniṣūdanaḥ

'Then, touching your breasts, O auspicious one, I shall place the embryo within you; the auspicious embryo, O goddess, shall become the slayer of Shakra.'

Verse 35 (padma.1.7.35)

āpastaṁbīṁ tataścakre putreṣṭiṁ draviṇādhikām iṁdraśatrobhavasveti juhāva ca havistvaran

He then performed the Apastambi sacrifice for a son, rich in wealth; and, hastening, offered the oblation, saying: 'Become the enemy of Indra.'

Verse 36 (padma.1.7.36)

devāśca mumurhurdaityā vimukhāścaiva dānavāḥ dityāṁ garbhamathādhatta kaśyapaḥ prāha tāṁ punaḥ

The gods were bewildered, and the Daityas and Danavas grew despondent. Then Kashyapa placed the embryo in Diti, and spoke to her again:

Verse 37 (padma.1.7.37)

mukhaṁ te caṁdrapratimaṁ stanau bilvaphalopamau adharau vidrumākārau varṇaścātīva śobhanaḥ

'Your face is like the moon, your breasts like bilva fruits, your lips like coral in form, and your complexion exceedingly lovely.'

Verse 38 (padma.1.7.38)

'Seeing you, O wide-eyed one, I forget my own body. Thus, O fair-hipped one, the embryo has been sown by my hand upon your breast.'

Verse 39 (padma.1.7.39)

tvayā yatne vidhātavyo hyasmingarbhe varānane saṁvatsaraśataṁ tvekamasminneva tapovane

'Great care must be taken by you regarding this embryo, O fair-faced one, for one full hundred years, in this very hermitage.'

Verse 40 (padma.1.7.40)

nopaskareṣu niviśenmusalolūkhalādiṣu jalaṁ ca nāvagāheta śūnyāgāraṁ ca varjayet

'One must not sit upon household implements — pestle, mortar and the like; one must not bathe by immersion, and one should avoid an empty house.'

Verse 42 (padma.1.7.42)

'One must not stand upon an anthill, nor become agitated in mind; one must not scratch the ground with one's nails, nor upon embers, nor upon ashes.'

Verse 43 (padma.1.7.43)

na śayāluḥ sadā tiṣṭhedvyāyāmaṁ ca vivarjayet na tuṣāṁgārabhasmāsthi kapāleṣu samāviśet

'One should not be constantly sleepy, and should avoid exertion; one should not sit upon husks, embers, ashes, bones, or skulls.'

Verse 44 (padma.1.7.44)

varjayetkalahaṁ loke gātrābhyaṁgaṁ tathaiva ca na muktakeśī tiṣṭheta nāśuciḥ syātkathaṁcana

'One should avoid quarrel with people, and likewise excessive anointing of the limbs; one should not remain with loosened hair, nor become impure in any way.'

Verse 45 (padma.1.7.45)

na śayītottaraśirāḥ na caivādhaḥ śirāḥ kvacit na vastrahīnā nodvignā na cārdracaraṇā satī

'One should not sleep with head to the north, nor ever with head downward; a virtuous woman should not be without clothing, nor agitated, nor with wet feet.'

Verse 46 (padma.1.7.46)

nāmaṁgalyāṁ vadedvācaṁ na ca hāsyādhikābhavet kuryācca gurubhirnityaṁ pūjāṁ māṁgalyatatparā

'One should not utter inauspicious speech, nor be given to excessive laughter; and, intent on auspiciousness, one should daily perform worship with one's elders.'

Verse 47 (padma.1.7.47)

sarvauṣadhībhiḥ sṛṣṭena vāriṇā snānamācaret tiṣṭhetprasannavadanā bhartṛpriyahite ratā na garhayecca bhartāraṁ sarvāvasthamapi kvacit

'One should bathe in water infused with all herbs; one should remain with a serene countenance, devoted to the husband's pleasure and welfare; one should never reproach one's husband, under any circumstance whatsoever.'

Verse 48 (padma.1.7.48)

kṛśāhaṁ durbalā caiva vārddhakyaṁ mama cāgatam stanau me calitau sthānānmukhaṁ ca valibhaṁguram

'I am emaciated and weak, and old age has come upon me; my breasts have slipped from their place, and my face is wrinkled and worn —'

Verse 49 (padma.1.7.49)

evaṁvidhā tvayā cāhaṁ kṛteti na vadetkvacit svastyastute gamiṣyāmi tathetyuktastayā punaḥ

'you have made me thus' — such a thing one should never say. Kashyapa said: 'May all be well with you; I shall now depart.' And she replied, 'So be it,'

Verse 50 (padma.1.7.50)

paśyatāṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ tatraivāṁtaradhīyata tataḥ sā bhartṛvācoktavidhinā samatiṣṭhata

and, in the sight of all beings, he vanished right there. Then she remained observing the rules just declared by her husband's words.

Verse 51 (padma.1.7.51)

atha jñātvā tatheṁdropi diteḥ pārśvamupāgataḥ vihāya devasadanaṁ tāṁ śuśrūṣuravasthitaḥ

Then Indra too, having learned of this, came to Diti's side; leaving the abode of the gods, he stayed there attending upon her, eager to serve.

Verse 52 (padma.1.7.52)

diteśchidrāṁtaraprepsurabhavatpākaśāsanaḥ viparītoṁtaravyagraḥ prasannavadato bahiḥ

Shakra, seeking to find some flaw or lapse of Diti, remained inwardly anxious though outwardly serene of countenance,

Verse 53 (padma.1.7.53)

ajānanniva tattkāryamātmanaśśubhamācaran tato varṣaśatāṁte sā nyūne tu divasaistribhiḥ

as if unaware of his own purpose, performing auspicious service. Then, at the end of the hundred years, lacking only three days,

Verse 54 (padma.1.7.54)

mene kṛtārthamātmānaṁ prītyā vismitamānasā akṛtvā pādayoḥ śaucaṁ śayānā muktamūrdhajā

she considered herself to have accomplished her purpose, her mind filled with joyful wonder; without washing her feet, she lay down with her hair loosened,

Verse 55 (padma.1.7.55)

nidrābharasamākrāṁtā divā paraśirāḥ kvacit tatastadaṁtaraṁ labdhvā praviśyāṁtaḥ śacīpatiḥ

overcome by the weight of sleep, during the day, her head lying in the wrong direction on one occasion. Then, seizing that lapse, the husband of Shachi entered within her

Verse 56 (padma.1.7.56)

vajreṇa saptadhā cakre taṁ garbhaṁ tridaśādhipaḥ tataḥ sapta ca te jātāḥ kumārāḥ sūryavarcasaḥ

and, with his thunderbolt, the lord of the thirty gods split that embryo into seven. Then seven boys were born, radiant as the sun,

Verse 57 (padma.1.7.57)

rudaṁtaḥ sapta te bālā niṣiddhā dānavāriṇā bhūyopi rudamānāṁstānekaikānsaptadhā hariḥ

and those seven infants, weeping, were checked by the enemy of the Danavas. As they wept still further, Hari once more split each of them

Verse 58 (padma.1.7.58)

Having brought forth, each in his own era, all this moving and unmoving creation, when the destruction of the Kalpa has occurred, they are released together with Brahma.

Verse 114 (padma.1.7.114)

amīyugasahasrānte vinaśyanti punaḥpunaḥ brahmādyā viṣṇusāyujyaṁ tato yāsyaṁti vai nṛpa

At the end of a thousand ages, these are destroyed again and again; and Brahma and the others then, O king, attain union with Vishnu.
