Verse 32 (padma.1.8.32)

Since, O great-minded one, the earth came to be as a daughter of Prithu, therefore, in accordance with his name, she is renowned by the wise as 'Prithvi'.
Verse 36 (padma.1.8.36)

Yama and Yamuna, too, were born as twins. Then, unable to bear the fiery splendor of Vivasvan's form,

nārīmutpādayāmāsa svaśarīrādaniṁditāṁ tvāṣṭrī svarūparūpeṇa nāmnā chāyeti bhāminī
the daughter of Tvashtri produced from her own body a blameless woman, of her own form, a radiant one named Chhaya.
Verse 41 (padma.1.8.41)

Verse 42 (padma.1.8.42)
apatyāni madīyāni mātṛsnehena pālaya tathetyuktvā ca sā devamagātkāmāya suvratā

Verse 43 (padma.1.8.43)
kāmayāmāsa devopi saṁjñeyamiti cādarāt janayāmāsa sāvarṇiṁ manuṁ manusvarūpiṇam

Verse 44 (padma.1.8.44)
savarṇatvācca sāvarṇermanorvaivasvatasya tu tataḥ sutāṁ ca tapatīṁ tvāṣṭrīṁ caiva krameṇa tu
and hence, being of like color, he was called Savarni. Then in due course, still thought to be the daughter of Tvashtri, she also bore a daughter, Tapati,
Verse 45 (padma.1.8.45)
chāyāyāṁ janayāmāsa saṁjñeyamiti bhāskaraḥ chāyā svaputre tvadhikaṁ snehaṁ cakre manau tadā
begotten by the Sun-god upon Chhaya, thinking her to be Sanjna. Chhaya then showed greater affection for her own son than for Manu Vaivasvata.
Verse 46 (padma.1.8.46)
na cakṣame manuḥ pūrvastadyamaḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ saṁtarjayāmāsa tadā pādamutkṣipya dakṣiṇaṁ
Manu, being the elder, endured this; but Yama, overcome with anger, then threatened her, raising his right foot.
Verse 47 (padma.1.8.47)
śaśāpa ca yamaṁ chāyā bhavatu krimisaṁyutaḥ pādoyameko bhavitā pūyaśoṇitavisravaḥ

prāyo na mātā sāsmākamasamā snehato yataḥ devopyāha yamaṁ bhūyaḥ kiṁ karomi mahāmate
'Perhaps she is not really our mother, since her affection is so unequal.' The god too said to Yama again: 'What can I do, O great-minded one?'
Verse 51 (padma.1.8.51)
saukhyātkasya na duḥkhaṁ syādathavā karmasaṁtatiḥ anivāryā bhavasyāpi kā kathānyeṣu jaṁtuṣu

'A cock shall devour the worm at your foot, and this foot shall become lame yet still handsome.'
Verse 53 (padma.1.8.53)
evamuktaḥ samāśvastastapastīvraṁ cakāra ha vairāgyātpuṣkare tīrthe phalaphenānilāśanaḥ
Thus addressed, he was consoled, and performed severe austerity out of dispassion at the sacred site of Pushkara, subsisting on fruit, foam, and air,
Verse 54 (padma.1.8.54)
pitāmahaṁ samārādhya yāvadvarṣāyutaṁ punaḥ tapaḥprabhāvāddeveśaḥ saṁtuṣṭaḥ padmasaṁbhavaḥ
propitiating the Grandsire, for a full ten thousand years. By the power of his austerity, the lotus-born lord of the gods became satisfied,
Verse 55 (padma.1.8.55)
vavre sa lokapālatvaṁ pitṛlokaṁ tathākṣayaṁ dharmādharmātmakasyāsya jagatastu parīkṣaṇam
and he chose sovereignty as a guardian of the world, and likewise the imperishable world of the ancestors, and the office of examining the righteous and unrighteous deeds of this world.
Verse 56 (padma.1.8.56)
evaṁ sa lokapālatvamagamatpadmasaṁbhavāt pitṝṇāmādhipatyaṁ ca dharmādharmasya cānagha
Thus he obtained, from the lotus-born one, the status of a world-guardian, and, O sinless one, the sovereignty over the ancestors and over righteousness and unrighteousness.
Verse 57 (padma.1.8.57)
vivasvānatha tajjñātvā saṁjñāyāḥ karmaceṣṭitaṁ tvaṣṭuḥ samīpamagamadācacakṣe saroṣavān
Then Vivasvan, learning of Sanjna's deed and conduct, went to the presence of Tvashtri, and, filled with anger, related the matter.
Verse 58 (padma.1.8.58)
