Srishti Khanda · Chapter 77
The Vow of the Sun's Own Seventh Day
Verse 1 (padma.1.77.1)
vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca | prabhavatyayamākāśe nityaṁ dvijavara prabho | ko'yaṁ ko vā prabhāvosya kutra jāto ghṛṇīśvaraḥ
Vaishampayana said: This one shines forth eternally in the sky, O best of Brahmins — who is he? What is his power? Where was this lord of light born?
Verse 2 (padma.1.77.2)
kiṁ karoti hi kāryaṁ vai yato raśmimayo bhṛśam | devairmunivaraissiddhaiścāraṇairdaityarākṣasaiḥ
What deed does he perform, being so intensely made of rays, that gods, the best of sages, Siddhas, Charanas, demons, and rakshasas—
Verse 3 (padma.1.77.3)
nikhilairmānuṣaiḥ pūjyaḥ sadaiva brāhmaṇādibhiḥ | vyāsa uvāca | paramaṁ brahmaṇastejo brahmadehādvinissṛtam
—and all humankind, Brahmins and the rest, ever worship him? Vyasa said: He is the supreme radiance of Brahman, issued forth from Brahman's own body.
Verse 4 (padma.1.77.4)
sākṣādbrahmamayaṁ viddhi dharmakāmārthamokṣadam | mayūkhairnirmalaiḥ kūṭamaticaṁḍaṁ suduḥsaham
Know him to be, verily, of the very substance of Brahman, the bestower of dharma, desire, wealth, and liberation; but with his rays gathered, he became exceedingly fierce and unbearable.
Verse 5 (padma.1.77.5)
dṛṣṭvā pradudruvurlokāḥ karaiścaṁḍaiḥ prapīḍitāḥ | tataśca sāgarāḥ sarve varanadyo nadādayaḥ
Seeing this, all beings fled, tormented by his fierce rays; and then all the oceans, the great rivers, and the streams—
Verse 6 (padma.1.77.6)
śuṣyaṁti jaṁtavastatra mriyaṁte cāturā janāḥ | atha śakrādayo devā brahmāṇaṁ samupāgatāḥ
—dried up; creatures there withered, and afflicted people died. Then Shakra and the other gods approached Brahma.
Verse 7 (padma.1.77.7)
imamarthaṁ tadā procurdevāṁśca vidhirabravīt | ādirbrahmatanordevāḥ sattvago janakaḥ prabhuḥ
They told him of this matter, and Vidhi (Brahma) spoke to the gods: 'O gods, I am the origin, born of Brahman's body, moving in sattva, the begetting Lord—'
Verse 8 (padma.1.77.8)
ayaṁ rajomayaḥ sākṣātsudhāṁśustanumadhyagaḥ | etābhyāṁ pālitā lokāstrailokye sacarācarāḥ
'—and this Sun is made of rajas, while the moon dwells in a middle nature; by these two, all the worlds of the three realms are sustained.'
Verse 9 (padma.1.77.9)
divyopapādakā devā ye vātraiva jarāyujāḥ | aṁḍajāḥ svedajāścaiva ye vātraivodbhijjādayaḥ
'The gods born by divine generation, those born from the womb, the egg-born, the sweat-born, and those born from sprouting seeds—'
Verse 10 (padma.1.77.10)
sūryasyāsya prabhāvaṁ tu vaktumeva na śaknumaḥ | anena rakṣitā lokā janitāḥ pālitā dhruvam
'—we are unable to describe the full power of this Sun; by him the worlds are surely protected, brought into being, and sustained.'
Verse 11 (padma.1.77.11)
asyaiva sadṛśo nāsti sarveṣāṁ parirakṣaṇāt | yaṁ ca dṛṣṭvāpyuṣaḥkāle pāparāśiḥ pralīyate
'There is none equal to him in protecting all beings; merely by beholding him at dawn, a whole heap of sin melts away.'
Verse 12 (padma.1.77.12)

'By worshipping him, the twice-born attain liberation; at the time of the twilight worship, the Brahmins who know Brahman—'
Verse 13 (padma.1.77.13)
udbāhavo bhavaṁtyeva te ca devaprapūjitāḥ | asyaiva maṁḍalasthāṁ ca devīṁ saṁdhyāsvarūpiṇīṁ
'—raise their arms in worship, and they are honored by the very gods. And the goddess seated within his orb, who is Sandhya (Twilight) herself—'
Verse 14 (padma.1.77.14)
samupāsya dvijāssarve labhaṁte svargamokṣakau | dharāyāṁ patitocchiṣṭāḥ pūtāste cāsya raśmibhiḥ
'—all the twice-born who worship her attain both heaven and liberation. Even scraps fallen upon the earth are purified by his rays.'
Verse 15 (padma.1.77.15)
saṁdhyopāsanamātreṇa kalmaṣātpūtatāṁ vrajet | dṛṣṭvā cāṁḍālakaṁ goghnaṁ patitaṁ kuṣṭhasaṁgatam
'By the mere worship of the twilight, one becomes purified of taint. Even one who has seen a Chandala, a cow-killer, an outcaste, or a leper—'
Verse 16 (padma.1.77.16)
mahāpātakasaṁkīrṇamupapātakasaṁvṛtam | paśyaṁti ye narāssūraṁ te pūtā gurukilbiṣāt
'—one steeped in great sins, enveloped in lesser sins — those who look upon the Sun are purified even from the gravest transgression.'
Verse 17 (padma.1.77.17)
asyopāsanamātreṇa sarvarogātpramucyate | nāṁdhatvaṁ na ca dāridryaṁ duḥkhaṁ na ca śocyatām
'By the mere worship of him, one is freed from every disease; neither blindness, nor poverty, nor sorrow, nor grief befalls one.'
Verse 18 (padma.1.77.18)
labhate ca ihāmutra samupāsya virocanam | adṛṣṭā naiva lokaiśca devā hariharādayaḥ
'And by worshipping Virochana (the Radiant One), one attains good fortune both here and hereafter. The gods, Hari and Hara, are never seen by the world at all—'
Verse 19 (padma.1.77.19)
dhyānarūpapragamyāste dṛṣṭo devo hyayaṁ smṛtaḥ | devā ūcuḥ | astu prasādanārādhyaścāstūpāsanapūjanam
'—they are approached only through meditation; but this god is remembered as one who is actually seen.' The gods said: 'So let him be one propitiated by grace, and let there be worship of him.'
Verse 20 (padma.1.77.20)
asyaiva darśanaṁ brahmanpralayānalasaṁmitam | sarve narādayassatvā mṛtāvasthāṁ gatā bhuvi
'O Brahman, the mere sight of him is like the fire of dissolution; all beings, men and the rest, have fallen upon this earth into a state like death—'
Verse 21 (padma.1.77.21)
asya tejaḥprabhāveṇa praṇaṣṭāssāgarādayaḥ | na samarthā vayaṁ soḍhuṁ kathamanye pṛthagjanāḥ
'—by the power of his splendor, the very oceans have been destroyed. We ourselves cannot endure it — how then could ordinary beings?'
Verse 22 (padma.1.77.22)
tasmāttavaprasādācca pūjayāmo yathā ravim | yajaṁti ca narā bhaktyā tadupāyo vidhīyatām
'Therefore, by your grace, let us worship the Sun properly, and let men too worship him with devotion — devise a means for this.'
Verse 23 (padma.1.77.23)
devānāṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā gato brahmakhageśvaram | gatvā stotuṁ samārebhe sarvalokahitāya vai
Hearing the words of the gods, Brahma went to the sky-faring Sun; and going there, he began to praise him, for the welfare of all the worlds.
Verse 24 (padma.1.77.24)
devatvaṁ sarvalokasya cakṣurbhūto nirāmayaḥ | brahmarūpadharaḥ sākṣādduṣprekṣyaḥ pralayānalaḥ
'You are the very godhead of all the worlds, its eye, free from affliction; you bear the very form of Brahman, impossible to gaze upon, like the fire of dissolution.'
Verse 25 (padma.1.77.25)
sarvadevasthitastvaṁ hi sadā vāyusakhastanau | annādipācanaṁ tvatto jīvanaṁ ca bhaveddhruvam
'You dwell within all the gods; ever the companion of Vayu within the body; from you comes the digestion of food, and surely, life itself.'
Verse 26 (padma.1.77.26)
utpattipralayau deva tvameko bhuvaneśvaraḥ | tvadṛte sarvalokānāṁ dinaikaṁ nāsti jīvanam
'O God, you alone are both creation and dissolution, lord of the universe; without you, not a single day of life is possible for any world.'
Verse 27 (padma.1.77.27)
prabhustvaṁ sarvalokānāṁ trātā goptā pitā prasūḥ | carācarāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ tvatprasādāddhṛtaṁ jagat
'You are the lord of all the worlds, their savior, protector, father, and progenitor; by your grace alone is this world, moving and unmoving, sustained.'
Verse 28 (padma.1.77.28)
deveṣu tvatsamo nāsti bhagavaṁstvakhileṣu ca | sarvatra te'sti sadbhāvastvayaiva dhāritaṁ jagat
'O Lord, among the gods and among all beings there is none equal to you; your true being pervades everywhere, and by you alone is the world upheld.'
Verse 29 (padma.1.77.29)
rūpagaṁdhādikārī tvaṁ rasānāṁ svādutā tvayā | evaṁ viśveśvaraḥ sūro nikhilasthitikārakaḥ
'You are the maker of form and fragrance; the very savor of all tastes is by you. Thus the Sun, lord of the universe, sustains all existence.'
Verse 30 (padma.1.77.30)
tīrthānāṁ puṇyakṣetrāṇāṁ makhānāṁ jagataḥ prabho | tvamekaḥ prayato hetussarvasākṣī guṇākaraḥ
'O Lord of the world, you alone, ever pure, are the cause of all sacred fords, holy places, and sacrifices — witness of all, the mine of all virtues.'
Verse 31 (padma.1.77.31)
sarvajñaḥ sarvakartā ca hartā pātā sadotsukaḥ | dhvāṁtapaṁkāmayaghnaśca dāridryaduḥkhanāśanaḥ
'All-knowing, the doer of all, destroyer and protector, ever eager to bless; the destroyer of darkness, defilement, and disease; the destroyer of poverty and sorrow.'
Verse 32 (padma.1.77.32)
pretyeha ca paro baṁdhuḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvalocanaḥ | tvadṛte sarvalokānāmupakārī na vidyate
'Both in this world and the next, you are the truest kinsman, all-knowing, the eye of all; without you there is no true benefactor for the worlds.'
Verse 33 (padma.1.77.33)
āditya uvāca | pitāmaha mahāprājña viśveṁdra viśvabhāvaka | brūhi śīghraṁ paraṁ yatte kariṣyāmi mataṁ vidhe
Aditya said: 'O Grandsire of great wisdom, lord of the universe, creator of the universe — tell me quickly your wish, O Vidhi, and I shall do as you think fit.'
Verse 34 (padma.1.77.34)
brahmovāca | mayūkhastvaticaṁḍaśca lokānāmatiduḥsahaḥ | yathaiva mṛdutāmeti tathā kuru sureśvara
Brahma said: 'Your rays are exceedingly fierce, unbearable to the worlds — do, O lord of gods, whatever will make them gentle.'
Verse 35 (padma.1.77.35)
āditya uvāca | kiraṇāḥ koṭikoṭirme lokanāśakarāḥ parāḥ | na cābhīṣṭakarā loke prayogācchindhi tānprabho
Aditya said: 'Tens of millions upon millions of my rays bring destruction and no benefit to the worlds — cut them away, O Lord, through some method.'
Verse 36 (padma.1.77.36)
tato viriṁcinā tūrṇaṁ ravivākyavaśāddhruvaṁ | āhūya viśvakarmāṇaṁ kṛtvā vajramayīṁ bhrami
Then Virinchi (Brahma), swiftly, at the Sun's own request, summoned Vishvakarma; having made an adamantine grindstone—
Verse 37 (padma.1.77.37)
ciccheda ca raverbhānūnpralayānalasannibhān | taireva racitaṁ tatra viṣṇoścakraṁ sudarśanam
—he cut away the Sun's own rays, which blazed like the fire of dissolution; and from those rays, Vishnu's discus Sudarshana was fashioned.
Verse 38 (padma.1.77.38)
amoghaṁ yamadaṁḍaṁ ca śūlaṁ paśupatestathā | kālasya ca paraḥ khaḍgaśśaktirgurupramodinī
The unfailing staff of Yama, and likewise the trident of Pashupati; the supreme sword of Kala, and the spear dear to Guru (Skanda)—
Verse 39 (padma.1.77.39)
caṁḍikāyāḥ paraṁ śastraṁ vicitraṁ śūlakaṁ tathā | cakre brahmājñayā śīghraṁ tenaiva viśvakarmaṇā
—and Chandika's supreme weapon, likewise her wondrous trident — all these Vishvakarma himself swiftly fashioned, at Brahma's command.
Verse 40 (padma.1.77.40)
sahasrakiraṇaṁ śiṣṭamanyaccaiva praśātitam | ajanopāyabhāvena punaśca kaśyapānmune
What remained of the thousand rays, after the rest was pared away, was later, by the natural way of birth, born again from the sage Kashyapa—
Verse 41 (padma.1.77.41)
aditergarbhasaṁjāta āditya iti vai smṛtaḥ | ayaṁ carati viśvāṁte meruśṛṁgaṁ bhramatyapi
—born from Aditi's womb, and thus he is remembered as Aditya. He moves at the edge of the universe, and also circles the peak of Mount Meru.
Verse 42 (padma.1.77.42)
sadordhvaṁ dinarātraṁ ca dharaṇyā lakṣayojane | grahāścaṁdrādayastatra caraṁti vidhinoditāḥ
Ever above, through day and night, at a hundred thousand yojanas from the earth, the Moon and other planets move as ordained.
Verse 43 (padma.1.77.43)
sūraḥ saṁcarate māsāndvādaśadvādaśātmakaḥ | saṁkramādasya saṁkrāṁtiḥ sarvaireva pratīyate
The Sun moves through the twelve months, being of twelve-fold nature himself; from his transit comes what all recognize as the Sankranti.
Verse 44 (padma.1.77.44)
tāsu yadvā phalaṁ brūmo lokānāṁ nikhilaṁ mune | dhanurmithunamīneṣu kanyāyāṁ ṣaḍaśītayaḥ
O sage, the merit for these transits: in Sagittarius, Gemini, Pisces, and Virgo, the merit is called Shadashiti.
Verse 45 (padma.1.77.45)
vṛṣavṛścikakuṁbheṣu siṁhe viṣṇupadī smṛtā | tarpaṇaṁ cākṣayaṁ viddhi dānaṁ devārcanaṁ tathā
In Taurus, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Leo, it is called Vishnupadi; know that the tarpana, gifts, and worship made then are imperishable.
Verse 46 (padma.1.77.46)
ṣaḍaśītisahasrāṇi ṣaḍaśītau phalaṁ bhavet | viṣṇupadyāṁ tu lakṣaṁ tu ayane koṭikoṭakaṁ
In the Shadashiti transit, the merit equals eighty-six thousandfold; in Vishnupadi, a hundred thousandfold; and at the solstice, tens of millions upon millions.
Verse 47 (padma.1.77.47)
viṣṇupadyāṁ tu yaddānamakṣayaṁ parikīrtitaṁ | dāturvadāmi sānnidhyaṁ sadā janmanijanmani
Whatever gift is given at the Vishnupadi transit is declared imperishable; I say the giver's presence with him remains, birth after birth.
Verse 48 (padma.1.77.48)
śīte tūlapaṭīdānānna duḥkhaṁ jāyate tanau | tulādāne talpadāne dvayorevākṣayaṁ phalaṁ
By the gift of a cotton quilt in the cold season, no suffering befalls the body; the gift of one's weight in gold and the gift of a bed both bear imperishable merit.
Verse 49 (padma.1.77.49)
sarvopakaraṇāṁ śayyāṁ yo dadāti vimatsaraḥ | varṇamukhyāya viprāya sa rājapadavīṁ labhet
Whoever, free of envy, gives a bed complete with its furnishings to a foremost Brahmin, attains the rank of a king.
Verse 50 (padma.1.77.50)
tathaivāgniṁ jalaṁ datvā nadītīre pathiprage | datvā ca tailatāṁbūlamūrvyā adhipatirbhavet
Likewise, one who provides fire and water at a riverbank for travelers, and gives oil and betel, becomes lord of the earth.
Verse 51 (padma.1.77.51)
satyabhāvāddvijaṁ natvā dhanī cākṣayatāṁ vrajet | māghe māsyasite pakṣe paṁcadaśyāmaharmukhe
By bowing to a Brahmin with a truthful heart, a wealthy man attains inexhaustible merit; in Magha's dark fortnight, on the fifteenth, at dawn—
Verse 52 (padma.1.77.52)
pitṝṁstilajalaireva tarpayitvākṣayo divi | sulakṣaṇāṁ ca gāṁ datvā hemaśṛṁgāṁ maṇiprabhām
—by offering the ancestors water mixed with sesame, one gains imperishable merit in heaven; and by giving a well-marked cow with golden horns, radiant with jewels—
Verse 53 (padma.1.77.53)
raupyakhurapradeśāṁ ca tathā kāṁsyasudohanām | etāṁ datvā dvijāgryāya sārvabhaumo bhavennṛpaḥ
—with silver-plated hooves, and a fine bronze milking-pail, given to a foremost Brahmin, a king becomes sovereign of the whole earth.
Verse 54 (padma.1.77.54)
datvānnābharaṇaṁ rājā maṁḍaleśo dhanīśvaraḥ | tiladhenuṁ tu yo dadyātsarvopaskaraṇānvitām
By giving food and ornaments, a king becomes a regional lord and lord of wealth. Whoever gives a cow of sesame seed with all its accessories—
Verse 55 (padma.1.77.55)
saptajanmārjitātpāpānmukto nāke'kṣayo bhavet | bhojyānnaṁ brāhmaṇe datvā akṣayaṁ svargamaśnute
—is freed from the sins of seven births and becomes imperishable in heaven; by giving food to a Brahmin, one obtains imperishable heaven.
Verse 56 (padma.1.77.56)
dhānyaṁ vastraṁ tathā bhṛtyaṁ gṛhapīṭhādikaṁ ca yat | yo dadāti dvijāgryāya taṁ ca lakṣmīrna muṁcati
Whoever gives grain, clothing, a servant, a house and seat, to a foremost Brahmin — Lakshmi never abandons him.
Verse 57 (padma.1.77.57)
yatkiṁciddīyate dānaṁ svalpaṁ vā yadi vā bahu | akṣayaṁ paralokeṣu yugādyāsu tathaiva ca
Whatever gift is given, whether small or great, becomes imperishable in the worlds beyond, and on the first days of the yugas.
Verse 58 (padma.1.77.58)
yadvā devārcanaṁ stotraṁ dharmākhyānapratiśravaḥ | punāti sarvapāpebhyo divi pūjyo bhavatyasau
Or worship of the gods, hymns, and listening to discourses on dharma, purify one of all sin, and one becomes honored in heaven.
Verse 59 (padma.1.77.59)
tṛtīyā māghamāsasya sitā manvaṁtarā smṛtā | tasyāṁ yaddīyate dānaṁ sarvamakṣayamucyate
The third day of Magha's bright half is deemed equal to a Manvantara; whatever gift is given that day is said to be wholly imperishable.
Verse 60 (padma.1.77.60)
dhanaṁ bhogyaṁ tathā rājyaṁ nākaṁ kalpāṁtarasthitam | tasmāddānaṁ satāṁ pūjā pretyānaṁtaphalapradā
Such a gift bestows wealth, enjoyment, sovereignty, and heaven that endures beyond the kalpa; giving is the worship of the virtuous, bearing endless fruit.
Verse 61 (padma.1.77.61)
manvaṁtarā tu māghe syātsaptamī yā śitītarā | tithiḥ puṇyatamā proktā purāṇairabhirakṣitā
But the seventh day of Magha's bright half is equal to a Manvantara — this tithi is declared most sacred, safeguarded by the Puranas.
Verse 62 (padma.1.77.62)
māghamāse site pakṣe saptamī koṭibhāskarā | tāmupoṣya naraḥ puṇyāṁ mucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
In Magha's bright fortnight, the seventh day equals ten million suns; by fasting on that sacred day, a man is freed — there is no doubt.
Verse 63 (padma.1.77.63)
sūryagrahaṇatulyā hi śuklā māghasya saptamī | aruṇodayavelāyāṁ tasyāṁ snānaṁ mahāphalam
The bright seventh of Magha is equal to a solar eclipse; bathing at the hour of dawn's red glow on that day bears great merit.
Verse 64 (padma.1.77.64)
yacca tatra kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ mayā saptasu janmasu | tanme rogaṁ ca śokaṁ ca bhāskarī haṁtu saptamī
'Whatever sin I have committed in seven births — may the Sun's Saptami destroy that, and my disease and my sorrow.'
Verse 65 (padma.1.77.65)
jananī sarvabhūtānāṁ saptamī saptasaptike | saptamyāmudite devi namaste ravimaṁḍale
'O Saptami, mother of all beings, of the seven-horsed Sun; O Goddess risen on the seventh day within the Sun's orb, homage to you!'
Verse 66 (padma.1.77.66)
arkapatraṁ yavāḥ puṣpaṁ sugaṁdhaṁ badarīphalam | tatpatre tāmrapātre vā yuktamānīya taṇḍulam
With arka-leaves, barley, fragrant flowers, and jujube fruit — bringing rice properly prepared on that leaf, or in a copper vessel—
Verse 67 (padma.1.77.67)
yajñasūtraṁ sasiṁdūraṁ datvā cārghaṁ suśobhanam | sarvapāpaṁ kṣayaṁ yāti saptajanmakṛtaṁ ca yat
—and offering a sacred thread smeared with vermilion, along with a beautiful arghya, all sin, even that of seven births, is destroyed.
Verse 68 (padma.1.77.68)
narakaiḥ pīḍyate tāvadrogaiḥ pāpaiśca duḥkhadaiḥ | haviṣyaṁ bhojayedannaṁ śuddhamātapataṁḍulaiḥ
Without this, one is tormented by hells, diseases, and sorrow-bringing sins; therefore one should eat sanctified food of pure sun-dried rice.
Verse 69 (padma.1.77.69)
varjayecca śilāghṛṣṭaṁ śṛṁgaberaṁ tu śākakam | koradūṣakapatraṁ ca raṁbhācchāgīghṛtaṁ tathā
One should avoid what is ground on stone, ginger, ordinary vegetables, koradusha-greens, plantain, and goat's ghee.
Verse 70 (padma.1.77.70)
keśakīṭādikaṁ varjyamuṣṇodasnānameva ca | alpabījādikaṁ sarvaṁ vrate sūrasya varjayet
One should avoid food touched by hair or insects, and bathing in warm water; in the Sun's vow, avoid all things with small seeds.
Verse 71 (padma.1.77.71)
anyacca nācarettatra dharmaciṁtāṁ vinā vratī | sauravrataṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ purāṇairabhinaṁditam
The votary should do nothing else there but think of dharma; the Sun's vow is of great merit, praised in the Puranas.
Verse 72 (padma.1.77.72)
varṣakoṭisahasrāṇi varṣakoṭiśatāni ca | ādityasya samaṁ bhogyaṁ labhate divi śāśvatam
For thousands upon thousands of millions of years, one obtains eternal enjoyment in heaven, equal to that of the Sun himself.
Verse 73 (padma.1.77.73)
evaṁ svargakṣayādeva rājā bhūmau mahādhanī | martyaloke purābhyāsātkaroti bhāskaravratam
Thus, when the merit of heaven is exhausted, such a soul is born a great, wealthy king on earth, performing the Sun's vow out of past habit.
Verse 74 (padma.1.77.74)
tathā svayaṁ sukhaṁ bhogyaṁ labhate divi śāśvatam | ārogyaṁ saṁpadaṁ janmī bhāskarasya prasādataḥ
Thus he obtains eternal happiness in heaven; and, born again, health and prosperity too, by Bhaskara's grace.
Verse 75 (padma.1.77.75)
ravivāre bhavedyā ca saptamī māghaśuklake | mahājayeti vikhyātā anyatra vijayā smṛtā
When the seventh day of Magha's bright fortnight falls on a Sunday, it is called Maha-jaya; otherwise it is called Vijaya.
Verse 76 (padma.1.77.76)
vijayā koṭilakṣaṁ syādanaṁtaṁ syānmahājayā | tatraikena vratenaiva mucyate janmabaṁdhanāt
Vijaya's merit equals ten million times a hundred thousand; Maha-jaya's is boundless. By even a single such vow, one is freed from rebirth's bondage.
Verse 77 (padma.1.77.77)
aśvaratnaṁ suvarṇaṁ ca raktavastraṁ ca dhānyakam | dadāti bhāskara prītyā svarga martyapatiḥ kramāt
Giving a jewel-like horse, gold, red cloth, and grain, out of love for Bhaskara, a lord of men attains heaven in due course.
Verse 78 (padma.1.77.78)
eṣāṁ bhedaṁ pravakṣyami śṛṇu vipra yathārthavat | uttamābharaṇairyuktaṁ sadvāhaṁ yo dadāti ha
I shall describe the distinctions among these gifts truly; hear, O Brahmin. Whoever gives a fine steed adorned with excellent ornaments—
Verse 79 (padma.1.77.79)
samudraissaptabhirjuṣṭāṁ bhūmimetyārivarjitām | labhedbhavāṁtare martyamekenaikādhipo bhavet
—attains, in another life, an earth girded by the seven seas and free of enemies; by this single gift, a mortal becomes sole sovereign.
Verse 80 (padma.1.77.80)
aśvahīnaṁ ca patrāṁgaṁ vṛṣabhairvāpyalaṁkṛtam | hemamāṣaṁ dvimāṣaṁ vā dakṣiṇā vihitā budhaiḥ
For a vehicle without a horse, or one adorned with bulls, the wise prescribe a fee of one or two masha-weights of gold.
Verse 81 (padma.1.77.81)
ratnabhāṁḍaṁ mahārthaṁ ca haimaireva kṛtaṁ ca yat | svarṇaṁ vā kevalaṁ datvā triviṣṭapadhaneśvaraḥ
By giving a jewel-vessel of great value, made entirely of gold, or gold alone, one becomes a lord of wealth in heaven.
Verse 82 (padma.1.77.82)
raktavastraṁ ca dhānyaṁ ca śaktito yaḥ prayacchati | svargorvyorīśatāmeti na taṁ lakṣmīrvimuṁcati
Whoever gives red cloth and grain according to his means attains lordship both in heaven and on earth; Lakshmi never forsakes him.
Verse 83 (padma.1.77.83)
arogī suprasannātmā dasyujetā pratāpavān | yāvatprabhāsate bhānustāvatpūjyatamo hi saḥ
He becomes free of disease, joyful-hearted, a conqueror of robbers, powerful; for as long as the sun shines, he remains the most venerated of men.
Verse 84 (padma.1.77.84)
māghādau dvādaśīṁmāyāṁ saptamīṁ kārayetsa tu | ihābhīṣṭaphalaṁ bhuktvā suraiścaiva prapūjyate
At the start of Magha, from the twelfth to the seventh, this vow should be performed; having enjoyed his desired fruit here, he is honored even by the gods.
Verse 85 (padma.1.77.85)
arkāṅgasaptamī vrataṁ kṛtvā ca vidhivadbudhaḥ | pāpātpūta ihābhīṣṭaṁ saṁprāpya muktimāpnuyāt
Having thus performed, in due order, the vow of Arkanga-saptami, the wise man, purified of sin, having attained his desire, obtains liberation.
Verse 86 (padma.1.77.86)
lakṣaṇaṁ ca pravakṣyāmi māsi māsi ca yo vidhiḥ | vratasyāsya prasādācca surāṇāmarcito divi
I shall now describe its characteristic and the monthly procedure; by this vow's grace, one becomes worshipped even by the gods in heaven.
Verse 87 (padma.1.77.87)
śuklapakṣe ravidine pravṛtte cottarāyaṇe | puṁnāmadheyanakṣatre gṛhṇīyātsaptamīvratam
In the bright fortnight, on a Sunday, when Uttarayana has begun, and under a nakshatra of masculine name, one should undertake this vow.
Verse 88 (padma.1.77.88)
hasto maitraṁ tathā puṣyaḥ śravo mṛga punarvasu | puṁnāmadheya nakṣatrāṇyetānyāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ
Hasta, Anuradha, Pushya, Shravana, Mrigashira, and Punarvasu — these the wise declare to be the nakshatras of masculine name.
Verse 89 (padma.1.77.89)
paṁcamyāmekabhaktaṁ tu ṣaṣṭhyāṁ naktaṁ prakīrtitam | saptamyāmupavāsaṁ ca aṣṭamyāṁ pāraṇaṁ bhavet
On the fifth day, a single meal is prescribed; on the sixth, a meal at night; on the seventh, fasting; and on the eighth, the breaking of the fast.
Verse 90 (padma.1.77.90)
arkāgraṁ śucigomayaṁ sumaricaṁ toyaṁ phalaṁ cāśnute | mūlaṁ naktamupoṣaṇaṁ ca vidhivatkṛtvaikabhaktaṁ tathā | kṣīraṁ vāpyaśanaṁ ghṛtāktamiti ca proktāḥ krameṇāmunā | kṛtvā vāsarasaptamīṁ dinakṛtaḥ prāpnotyabhīṣṭaṁ phalaṁ
In order: the tip of the arka leaf, then pure cow-dung with fine pepper and water, then fruit, then a root taken at night as a single meal, then milk or ghee-anointed food — thus prescribed in sequence. One who observes the Saptami day by day in this way obtains his desired fruit.
Verse 91 (padma.1.77.91)
arkāgraṁ grāmātpūrvottaradiggatārkaviṭapasya śākhāgrasthitaṁ | viśiṣṭaṁ sūkṣmapatradvayaṁ satoyaṁ dantairaspṛṣṭaṁ pātavyaṁ | śucigomayaṁ bhūmāvapatitaṁ madyāṅguṣṭhābhyāṁ palamātraṁ dantairaspṛṣṭaṁ satoyaṁ pātavyam | sumaricamavraṇamapurātanaṁ sthūlamavaśuṣkamekaṁ dantairaspṛṣṭaṁ satoyaṁ pātavyam | toyaṁ brahmapitraṅgulīmūlaprasaraṁ pātavyamphalaṁ kharjūranārikelānāmanyatamaṁ daṁtairaspṛṣṭaṁ pātavyaṁ ghṛtāktamiti cāhāraṁ mayūraḍiṁbhaparimāṇaṁ | ghṛtamapi tatparimāṇam
The arka-tip: from a branch of the arka tree standing north-east of the village, two fine leaves from the tip, untouched by the teeth, drunk with water. Pure cow-dung: fallen to the ground, taken with thumb and middle finger, about a palm's measure, untouched by the teeth, drunk with water. Fine pepper: unblemished, not old, plump and well-dried, a single one, untouched by the teeth, drunk with water. Water: in the measure spanning the base of the thumb. Fruit: date or coconut, untouched by the teeth. Ghee-anointed food: the size of a peacock's egg — the ghee likewise.
Verse 92 (padma.1.77.92)
ātmano dviguṇāṁ chāyāṁ yadā kurvīta bhāskaraḥ | tadā naktaṁ vijānīyānna naktaṁ niśibhojanaṁ
When the sun causes one's own shadow to become twice one's height, that is when the 'nakta' meal should be understood — nakta does not mean eating at actual night.
Verse 93 (padma.1.77.93)
prathamaṁ pūjayeddevaṁ phalapuṣpādimaṁtrakaiḥ | annadānaṁ tataḥ kuryādvidhyuktaparimāṇakaṁ
First one should worship the god with fruits, flowers, and mantras; then give food, in the measure enjoined by the rite.
Verse 94 (padma.1.77.94)
tato dhyānam | sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpūrṇaṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitaṁ | dvibhujaṁ raktavarṇaṁ ca raktapaṁkajadhṛtkaraṁ
Then the meditation: 'Complete with every auspicious mark, adorned with every ornament, two-armed, red in hue, holding a red lotus—'
Verse 95 (padma.1.77.95)
tejobiṁbaṁ bahujalamadhyasthaṁ saparicchadaṁ | padmāsanagataṁ devaṁ raktagaṁdhānulepanaṁ
'—a disc of radiance, standing amid great waters, with his full retinue, seated on a lotus-throne, anointed with red sandal-paste—'
Verse 96 (padma.1.77.96)
ādityaṁ ciṁtayeddevaṁ pūjākāle viśeṣataḥ | atha maṁtraścāyaṁ | bhāskarāya vidmahe sahasraraśmaye dhīmahi tannaḥ sūryaḥ pracodayāt
'—thus one should meditate on Aditya, especially at the time of worship.' And this is the mantra: 'We know Bhaskara; we meditate on the thousand-rayed one; may that Surya inspire us.'
Verse 97 (padma.1.77.97)
japya eṣa paraḥ proktaḥsaptamyāṁ vijayāvahaḥ | karavīraiḥ karaṁjaiśca raktakuṁkumasannibhaiḥ
This is declared the supreme mantra for recitation, bringing victory on the Seventh; with oleander and karanja flowers, red as saffron—
Verse 98 (padma.1.77.98)
paścācca pāraṇā kāryā tathāṣṭamyāṁ viśeṣataḥ | aṣṭamyāmeva kartavyaṁ navamyāṁ naiva pāraṇaṁ
—afterward, the fast-breaking should be performed, especially on the eighth; it must be on the eighth itself — never on the ninth.
Verse 99 (padma.1.77.99)
vrate phalaṁ na cāpnoti navamyāṁ pāraṇe kṛte | pāraṇaṁ tvaparāhṇe tu kaṭutiktāmlavarjitaṁ
If the fast is broken on the ninth, no merit is obtained; the fast-breaking should be in the afternoon, avoiding what is pungent, bitter, or sour.
Verse 100 (padma.1.77.100)
taṁḍulaṁ śodhayedyatnāttṛṇabījādikaṁ tyajet | mudga māṣa tilādīni ghṛtaṁ ca parivarjayet
The rice should be carefully cleaned, discarding straw and seeds; mung beans, black gram, sesame, and ghee should all be avoided.
Verse 101 (padma.1.77.101)
brāhmaṇānbhojayedbhaktyā śaktaḥ kṣīrādihavyakaiḥ | yathāśaktyannapānaiśca vyaṁjanaiśca nirāmiṣaiḥ
One who is able should feed Brahmins devotedly, with milk and other oblational foods; according to means, with food, drink, and flesh-free relishes.
Verse 102 (padma.1.77.102)
viprāya dakṣiṇāṁ dadyādvibhajya cānurūpataḥ | imāmanaṁtaphaladāṁ yaḥ kuryātsaptamīṁ naraḥ
One should give a fee to the Brahmin, apportioned suitably. Whoever performs this Saptami, which bestows boundless fruit—
Verse 103 (padma.1.77.103)
sarvapāpapraśamanīṁ dhanaputravivardhanīm | māsi māsi dvijaśreṣṭha vrataṁ kṛtvārkatuṣṭaye
—which calms all sin and increases wealth and offspring — O best of Brahmins, having performed this vow month after month for the Sun's satisfaction—
Verse 104 (padma.1.77.104)
—whoever devotedly performs its fast-breaking attains the world of the Sun; he dwells in heaven for tens of millions of kalpas, then attains the supreme destination.
Verse 105 (padma.1.77.105)
idameva paraṁ guhyaṁ bhāṣitaṁ śaṁbhunā purā | śravaṇātsatataṁ tasya vratasya paripālanāt | śrāvayedvāpi lokasya phalaṁ tulyaṁ prakīrtitaṁ
This alone is the supreme secret, spoken of old by Shambhu; by constantly hearing it and observing this vow, or even by causing others to hear it, an equal merit is declared.
